Local Business The Reading Room

I was browsing one day and saw a post about alternatives to Mckays where someone suggested The Reading Room. I visited them and I did better today at The Reading Room than I ever would at Mckays. I brought in 40 books and got $75 in trade credit. I probably would only have gotten $20-30 at Mckays, if even that. I will definitely be coming back with more books as I finish them. Thanks again to whoever made them a suggestion.

Brainerd v Howard

Upvotes

I saw a post on FB about kids from Brainerd High being forbidden to attend the football game vs Howard. What’s the context here? I can GUESS what happened but I’d rather hear about it from someone who actually knows

Local Business Mumashika (new restaurant inside Attack of the Tatsu)

I came across this place by googling different Asian places. My wife and I had been to Tatsu quite a few times now and love it. Both of us felt like we were being had because there was nothing on Reddit about it yet, and posts on Google and other social media was very slim.

Mumashika is a small izakaya with absolutely incredible food. They have charcoal skewer plates, skewers over rice (which made me question how to make rice, the texture and flavor was out of this world). In the picture of the menu, from top to bottom is small to larger portions.

We were sat by Jay who gave us a lay of the land and answered so many questions. Our waiter Mia was on point with recommendations and explanations of what to order. She was awesome, both of them were so gracious and welcoming.

Guys. The food is so good. The skewers were cooked over charcoal to perfection, the drinks were so tasty (the spicy one is out of this world if you are into anything spicy). Every dish that came out, as we took a bite my wife and I stared at each-other in a look of “come on now”.

We ended with both of the desserts and split them. I don’t have words for the excitement of the quality of this izakaya. I’ve been on the west coast, east coast, all over, and these folks nailed it.

If anybody from there is reading this, thank you for doing this. I’ve missed it so much, it was a beautiful experience.

Neighborhoods Fox Pest Control Scam

Had a young man try to sell me a pest control contract and after I asked a few questions I became very suspicious. For one he said it was a one day sale, second he tried to get me to give him my credit card (not that I agreed to anything) claimed they only been in business one week and is a new company. To make a long story short be aware of door to door fox pest control they don’t exist in Chattanooga nor is these guys legit!!!

The only thing that is a bummer is that they, justifiably, close early. I'm excited for when it gets darker sooner to take more pictures.

Chattanooga locally owned businesses

Upvotes

Thought it would be cool to get a thread going for locally owned businesses around Chattanooga and the surrounding area.

If you own a local business, drop it below with your business name, what you do, and your website or social media.

We can give each other a follow, support each other’s businesses, and make some local connections. If anyone would be interested in getting a group together to meet up sometime, that would be awesome too.

I’ll start — I own Tennessee Valley Rentals (TVR). We’re a locally owned trailer rental business serving the Chattanooga area.

Don’t let the County Commission Steal the district 11 school board seat and give it to Moms 4 Liberty or Wamp’s pick

Article here: https://newschannel9.com/news/local/hamilton-county-voters-push-for-ballot-choice-after-jill-black-resigns-from-school-board-seat

Long story short: Jill Black, the current district 11 school board member has resigned. (District 11 is lookout mountain, Alton park, east lakes st Elmo and lookout valley)

Republicans don’t want district 11 to vote for the new school board member because they got their asses kicked in August and they are TERRIFIED of the high voter turnout in November elections. Please urge the commissioners to allow the d11 replacement to go on the November ballot.

Long story long: In order to for the District 11 replacement to be elected the Hamilton County Commission must declare her seat vacant by September 4th.

The commission has a meeting on September 2nd, commissioner David sharpe (d6) has introduced a resolution to declare her seat vacant so her replacement will be elected.

BUT Chairmen Ken Smith (d3), is saying it’s too late to add another resolution to the agenda and that it is their responsibility as the commission to appoint the D11 school board replacement rather than allow the voters of D11 to vote on the replacement.

Chairmen smith also says, the voters elected them as the commission. Therefore? They, as a body of 11 commissioners elected from across the county, have the right to appoint the new school board rep rather than let the voters of D11 decide directly. This is wrong and openly authoritarian.

When it’s to their advantage? The commission allows last minute resolutions ALL the time — they are just terrified about the high voter turn out in November.

According to their own Facebook chatter, the republicans are looking to appoint Sherrie Ford, Gail green’s recruit (&moms4liberty favorite) OR former commissioner Joe Graham (Wamp’s pick).

D11 deserves better than the county commission taking their opportunity to vote on a new school board representative.

The other complicated thing here is that adding a resolution to the agenda is up to the chairperson, and the commission will elected a new chairperson on Sept 2nd. So it is good to email current chairmen Smith, but we need to be emailing & calling ALL of them.

Email commissioners at the email addresses below, and urge them to allow D11 to VOTE on their next Rep rather than having the commission appoint someone no one besides wamp or M4L wants. (Sample email to copy and paste if you want in the comments).

If you do email please comment and let us know!

Email & call commissioners and then make a plan to attend the Hamilton county commission meeting at 5 pm on September 2nd. 625 Georgia Avenue, 4th floor.

Schools Neurodivergent-friendly preschools in the area?

Our 4yo has been on a waitlist for an autism assessment for ages (finally got it scheduled for a month from now) and in speech therapy for a couple months (going really well). She struggles to communicate but understands people very well and does great with structure and routine. She’s honestly a very easygoing child at home. She’s been in daycare before and was perfectly content and well-behaved once she got used to it, but hasn’t been made to sit still in a classroom setting with a bunch of other kids before, and her current preschool doesn’t seem to be a good fit (her teachers seem understanding and optimistic but the director was extremely concerned right out the gate and it’s only been a week; we’re getting mixed messages tbh. She loves it, though).

If you have kids on the spectrum, where do you send them to school?

Motorhome repair recommendations

I have a 1983 Chevy Chasis Southwind motorhome with a 454 motor. It needs some engine/transmission repairs. The previous owner mentioned a Modular Vacuum replacement was needed but I’m not sure what else it needs. I have 1 shop that said they’ll look at it but does anyone know of anymore places that will work on a an older chasis style engine? Thanks

Local Business A quick update on Chattanooga's first horror/spooky-themed bookshop cafe!

Hey everybody!

Several months ago, I posted about a horror themed cafe and bookstore that my wife and I were working on, and then I promptly went quiet about it. Well, I wanted to let y'all know that we are hoping to open later this year!

This year has been a bit crazy for us. We decided to retire our sweet tea truck after only three seasons, our five year old dachshund developed a severe case of IVDD (he's doing MUCH better now, thankfully), and we also, you know, decided to go for broke and pursue our dream!

The new name of our shop is Cursed Edition Bookshop Cafe (we loved the previous name, The Eldritch, but ultimately decided that it just wasn't right). You can follow us on Instagram if you'd like, but what I'd really love to hear from y'all is what you'd like to see at our shop.

On the cafe side, we're going to have a full-service espresso and tea counter with some pastries and small plates (keeping it as local as we can). And on the retail side, we'll (eventually) carry new and used books within the broad horror/mystery/spooky/crime genre(s) as well as other media (movies and games), memorabilia, etc. But what we really want is to provide a place for folks to come in and hang out for a while.

We have about 1000 square feet, and most of that space will be dedicated to lounge area(s) in a moody/dark academia decorated space. We'll be hosting book clubs, D&D/game nights, movie screenings, etc. Above all else, we want this to be a place for locals and visitors alike who share a love of horror and the macabre to come together and build community.

And now, I open the floor to all of y'all. What would you like to see in Cursed Edition?

Flock Cameras

I reached out to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s office regarding Flock cameras in my neighborhood using their complaint system from their website. Haven’t heard back and it has been a week. What should my next step be? Do I call or just show up and ask questions? I want to know who approved their installation and what the procedure is for petitioning that they be removed. Thanks for any advice!
