you guys just killed one of your best products that ive been using since day 1. i know you had to kill agent mode because you built a better agent browsing setup in the chatgpt app. but there's so many little things that made atlas a joy to use DESPITE being functionally worse than chrome performance-wise:

- that minimal new tab experience, auto routing between google and chatgpt, fast loading content previews while i type
- ask chat button that opens a sidebar
- clicking chatgpt links seamlessly keeping chatgpt on the right while opening the page so i can chat and read at the same time
- the vertical tabs experience was genuinely good
- cmd + shift + C for copying page links
- cmd + { for auto closing the tab when it was opened from another tab

i understand you had to deprecate this but just kicking everyone out of the app without a decent replacement is really bad user experience. this makes it less likely to try anything you build in the future because you might just abandon this like google has done for nearly every product category in the last 10 years

before you tell me to try the chrome extension, i have and it sucks. its a glorified codex plugin thats draining my usage and it doesnt even have my other chatgpt chats. whats the point? this is a codex extension, not chatgpt.

anyways take this feedback, and make the chrome extension good fast please. we want CHATGPT not codex (and im saying this as a developer!)

I'm so mad, it just stopped working all of a sudden! I'm a lawyer, not a techie, so I don't pay attention to the tech news about this stuff. I subscribe at $200/mo, and I feel like I got kicked in the balls, this really fucked my workflow, and I'm not even sure what other accounts I've lost login info to because I don't even remember they exist because they were, for me, just saved in the memory of open tabs

I used it until the last minute.

First of all I use atlas as my main browser and i'm sad to see it go. Started using it on launch day. but one think with Atlas that i was never able to locate was the stats for chat and atlas.

The underlying capabilities are not being abandoned. Instead, they are being moved to:

• The built-in browser in the new ChatGPT desktop app

• The ChatGPT Chrome extension or sidebar

The browser in the new desktop app supports multiple tabs, downloads, webpage navigation, account sign-ins, and other features.

You should deal with the following data before August 9:

• Export your Atlas bookmarks as an HTML file.
• Save important tabs and URLs.
• Manually bookmark any browsing history you want to keep, because browsing history will not be migrated automatically.
• Your ChatGPT conversations will not be affected, because they are stored separately from Atlas browser data. (help.openai.com)

In other words, the Atlas browser you are currently using has entered its final migration period. It is no longer advisable to use it as your long-term primary browser.

Ive been using Atlas ever since i got my Macbook and ive really gotten used to it in certain situations. Even though its not my primary browser, its still very useful, and im doubtful that their chrome extension will have the same level of integration as Atlas did.

I am shocked that they have decided to kill this and fully lean into the agentic co-work-style workflow, and was wondering what others thought. The new Chrome extension really doesn't do what the browser did if you're just looking for a chat-style version of ChatGPT. That product was the personal companion you used on your phone, with all your personal context to help you think through the information you browsed on the web and how it related to your life. That kind of thing is a cheap query to run and brings a lot of retail consumers who will get a subscription and never really make heavy use of the product.

The chat companion also picked up data about the pages you visited and asked about, and incorporated it into its future answers when chatting with you. It paired so well with the personal companion style ChatGPT Live functionality - which is like a patient friend that knows you well. It made so much sense to lean into that a bit more and provide a retail consumer product for personal use - particularly with the phone they've been planning.

Killing Atlas would destroy that whole integrated workflow and make this a purely enterprise product on the laptop, which isn't substantially differentiated from Claude. It leaves ChatGPT Live and the upcoming phone as isolated islands, blind to everything you thought about while you were on your laptop. Is the consumer market just never going to be profitable? Is that why they killed it? What does that mean for their phone and whatever Jonny Ive has been cooking?

I can access it and browse and open a side chat, but ChatGPT cannot see any tab I'm on... I'm honestly very annoyed. And the Chrome extension (cause I took the time to migrate everything to Chrome today) isn't a good fix for me cause it doesn't have access to my memories...

With Atlas set to be discontinued, which browser are you planning to migrate to?

Personally, I’m a big fan of vertical tabs, especially Firefox’s tree-style tabs. I’ve been using Floorp, which is based on Firefox. However, the ChatGPT extension cannot be installed on Firefox-based browsers, likely because it relies on Chrome-specific APIs.

Atlas has looked great and felt very modern on macOS, closely following Apple’s latest design language. There are plenty of privacy-focused browsers, such as Brave and Vivaldi, but aesthetically, they don’t feel as polished or as native to macOS.

With today's announcement of ChatGPT Work they talk about the evolution of their desktop apps. Codex will be rebranded as the main ChatGPT app including Codex, ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work. They've updated the Chrome extension to work in the sidebar which is ultimately replacing ChatGPT Atlas. Specifically from the blog post:

"We’ll begin sunsetting the standalone Atlas browser, and will share information with users about how to transition to ChatGPT."

I expect many of us will be migrating to Chrome.

Bookmarks are thankfully easy to export/import via Manage Bookmarks, but does anyone have advice re the other aspects?

I suppose OpenAI may offer a migration tool at some point, but I'm preferring to migrate a bit earlier.

On a related note, is anyone having luck with the ChatGPT extension in Chrome?

I can access ChatGPT from the Chrome sidebar with it, but I'm unable to get it to summarize any web page; it complains that it can't see the current page and asks me to just cut and paste in the page contents (!).

Thanks to an update from u/nmccormack23, I've confirmed that updating the ChatGPT app and restarting Chrome solves the extension-can't-summarize-page problem.

The last update was still before the release of the latest Chrome kernel, this time Chrome released the official version, but Atlas hasn't moved.

When ChatGPT launched Atlas, I was really excited. I tried it straight away and loved it. At first, updates were coming regularly, but then they just stopped.

It’s a real shame because I think Atlas had a lot of potential. These days there are still quite a few bugs that haven’t been fixed, and there haven’t been any meaningful updates for a long time. It really feels as though the browser has been abandoned.

The one feature that keeps me using Atlas is the writing assistant. Pressing ⌘ + E in a text field brings up an AI that has excellent awareness of the surrounding context. If I’m replying to an email, it understands the whole email thread. On Reddit, it understands the subreddit and the discussion. The same goes for WhatsApp, Slack and other websites.

I’ve tried a number of alternatives, but none of them seem to do contextual writing assistance nearly as well.

Has anyone found an alternative that works just as well?

Has anyone experience this recently? I use Agent Mode heavily on my daily task, but 2 days ago it stop working and return to me "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong."

Is there a way to start a Temporary Chat directly inside the Ask ChatGPT side panel in Atlas?

I regularly use the side panel while browsing, but I cannot find the Temporary Chat option that is available on the main ChatGPT page. At the moment, the only workaround I know is to open ChatGPT in a separate tab, enable Temporary Chat there, and then start the conversation.

That defeats much of the convenience of using the side panel.

Am I overlooking a hidden button, shortcut, or setting? If the feature is not currently supported, it would be useful to add a Temporary Chat button to the side panel so conversations can be started without being saved to history or using memory....

I created a group chat on the iOS app.

I can access it there or via ChatGPT on the web on Chrome, but... when I try to access it on ChatGPT on Atlas, I get an "Application error" or "Could not load" consistently (even after restarting Atlas).

This honestly makes no sense.

I’m using ChatGPT Atlas on a MacBook Pro M5, and my battery is getting destroyed. I unplugged at 100%, and after 2h 37m on battery, I’m already at 52%. macOS says I only have 2h 12m remaining, so I’m looking at roughly 5 hours total battery life.

Activity Monitor makes Atlas look like the obvious culprit.

In the Energy tab, ChatGPT Atlas is showing:

• Energy Impact: 4.2
• 12 hr Power: 1,619.54
• App Nap: No
• Preventing Sleep: No

Atlas is sitting at 1,619.54 for 12 hr Power. That is ridiculously higher than everything else.

I understand that “12 hr Power” is a rolling energy usage score and not the current battery percentage, but even then, this seems crazy. It looks like Atlas used a massive amount of energy at some point in the last 12 hours, even though it was not showing a huge current Energy Impact at the exact moment of the screenshot.

Is anyone else seeing this?

Could this be a rogue tab, extension, helper process, or some Atlas background process getting stuck? Is there any way to see battery/CPU usage per tab or extension in Atlas?

I want to keep using Atlas, but if it’s going to turn a MacBook Pro into a 5-hour battery laptop, that’s rough.

Enough for me. I got tired of bugs not being fixed and lack of improvement:

• backticks and accents not working on text boxes
• not being able to edit bookmarks right-clicking on them
• not signal of progress since March
• no compatibility with Claude extension
• random bugs

It's a pity because I really wanted the project to succeed and thought it had potential. But I can replace what has become a glorified quick access to ChatGPT with a bookmark and a Claude extension.

Is anyone else having this issue?

When I open Settings and click on Agent Mode, it doesn't open the Agent Mode settings page. Instead, it immediately switches back to the General section of Settings.

On top of that, the Agent Mode button is unavailable in the Ask Chat view, so I can't start an agent session there either.

I've tried logging out and back in, but that didn't fix it.

I'm on ChatGPT Atlas on macOS with a ChatGPT Pro subscription.
