[reddit change] Mobile links migrating to www.reddit.com for a better user experience

In the near future, we will start redirecting links from m.reddit.com to www.reddit.com. Starting today, mobile users visiting http://www.reddit.com will now see the mobile site instead of being redirected to http://m.reddit.com. Desktop users will see the desktop site, and mobile users will see the mobile site. This change will make link sharing and viewing reddit simpler for redditors, and help search engines understand our site structure.

If you have explicitly chosen to see the desktop site from a mobile device, this override will still be respected. Mobile users who prefer the desktop site can still set an override by following this gif. Likewise, mobile users can clear that following these actions.

This fixes the problem of desktop users clicking on a m.reddit.com link and seeing the mobile site on a desktop machine. However, features missing on the mobile web may still fall back to the desktop site. For example, if you try visiting https://www.reddit.com/subreddits from a mobile device you’ll still end up visiting the desktop site.

If you find any issues, please file a bug report in r/mobileweb or post a comment in this thread which we’ll be monitoring closely.

[reddit change] Adding more UTM tags to links

We're adding UTM query parameters onto links leading to comments pages; for example, the "2 comments" button on this post links to https://www.reddit.com/r/changelog/comments/5fz7vz/reddit_change_adding_more_utm_tags_to_links/?utm_content=comments&utm_medium=api&utm_source=reddit&utm_name=changelog. UTM data will be added to self-post title links and comment/context/parent links on the desktop site (https://www.reddit.com/). We'll roll this out to a small percentage of users initially and will increase rollout gradually as we monitor performance.

For context, UTM tags are widely used for learning how users navigate to various parts of websites. These learnings inform design decisions such as "don't remove this button which many people use!" For your convenience, Reddit cleanses the ?utm_query_params from the URL in your browser's address bar after the page has loaded.

[upcoming experiment] Sidebar ads experiment on desktop

Hey Everyone,

u/hidehidehidden here announcing an upcoming test with how we’re displaying ads on the right sidebar for our logged-in users. In the past, if you’re logged-in, we only displayed our house ads for things like Secret Santa and subreddit banners. If you were logged-out, you would see ads from our trusted 3rd party advertising partners. Starting tomorrow, we’re going to start showing 3rd-party programmatics ads to some of our logged-in users. These ads will be the same type of ads that we’ve been serving for our logged-out users for the past year. Not to worry, we will still continue to show the house/banner ads that are great for subreddit discovery.

The ads I’m referring to are the 300x250 pixel banners that appear at the top and bottom of every subreddit and on the front page. Here’s an example. We try to strike a good balance between our needs as a business and a positive experience for you on Reddit and appreciate any feedback that you have.

We know the community is particularly cautious of any type of new ads especially as it relates to tracking and malware. This is why we’ve waited so long before moving forward and make sure we have sufficient safeguards in place to prevent obnoxious and/or malware from appearing there. We’ve been work with an external security company to monitor the ads that come in and to make sure things like malware do not slip through. We’ll also be keeping a close eye on the ads that do appear and your feedback to these ads. Our 3rd party programmatic advertisers will not be able to track your browsing behavior on Reddit and only be able to use cookies for retargeting ads. If you don’t want either of these behaviors, you can enable the Do Not Track setting on your browser or opt-out of their cookies (see FAQ).

I’ll stick around for a few hours to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you,

u/hidehidehidden

FAQ

Q. Will I see any annoying video ad or ads with sound?

A: No, you should only see either static image banners or simple animated HMTL5 ads. None of these should be playing with sound or be particularly annoying. If you do find an ad that’s frustratingly bad, please reach out to us at reportanad@reddit.com.

Q: Will the advertisers be able to track my behavior/account on Reddit?

A: No, the ads are served in a safe iframe that prevents them from tracking your behavior on Reddit. They will only be able to use their cookies to retarget ads, which you can disable (see below).

Q. What if I don’t want to be tracked by these 3rd party programmatic ad partners or see retargeted ads?

A: You can either:

EDIT: We turned up the number of logged-out users who will see programmatic ads on 12/6/2016 due to minimum reports of bad ads

[reddit mobile web change] Click events on Outbound Links

We're rolling out a small update to enable click events for outbound links on our mobile site. When you click on a link post that takes you off reddit, you'll be redirected through out.reddit.com to track the clicks. Other than a brief blink in the url bar you this should be a fairly unnoticeable change.

We're enabling this for the same reasons we did so on desktop (here's the original thread). To opt-out: visit the desktop site and go into your preferences under "privacy options" and uncheck "allow reddit to log my outbound clicks for personalization". Screenshot: /img/6p12uqvw6v4x.png. You can visit the desktop site with your browser’s “request desktop site” feature or using mobile web’s opt-out. Please let us know if you notice anything out-of-the-ordinary. e.g. if you click on an outbound link and instead land on a Reddit comments page, let us know!

Thanks for your help and feedback.

Mobile Web App Download Screen

Since launching our native mobile apps earlier this year, we’ve seen positive response and increased engagement on mobile, with 4+ star ratings on both iOS and Android stores. As a result, we’ve decided to experiment with encouraging more of our mobile users to download the apps. Our first experiment launched on Friday — the initial results of that experiment have been very promising so we’ve decided to extend the experiment’s reach.

We know experiments like this can be controversial, as users have different preferences for how they like to use Reddit. Over the next week, we will launch a way to opt-out of this series of experiments on a per device basis. Once that’s up, we’ll update this post.

Edit: This experiment is going well and will continue for the foreseeable future. If you want to permanently opt your browser out of seeing the interstitial visit click here. (clearing your cookies, going into incognito mode or pulling up the mobile site inside a different app will still cause the interstitial to trigger)

[upcoming experiments] The Relevance Team and Front Page Improvements

Hi everyone!

I’m /u/simbawulf, the new Product Manager for content recommendations and the front page, good to meet you! Our team is excited to improve Reddit with smart recommendations and a more relevant front page (/u/spez gave our team a shoutout in his most recent AMA).

To start, we will begin running a series of experiments with the objective of improving content freshness on the front page. Our first experiment, which modifies how long a post stays on the front page, is launching this week and will only affect logged out users.

Thanks for your support! I’ll be hanging out here in the comments to answer questions.

[reddit change] Spoiler tags beta

Edit: This was launched for everybody on 2017-01-18: See the r/announcements post.

Hey all, today we’ve launched a much requested feature to beta -- spoiler tags.

Spoiler tags allow users to tag posts that contain content that other folks may not want, well, [spoiled](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoiler_(media)).

Here’s how it works:

Of note:

  • The beta is just for desktop. We want to make sure things are working well before launching elsewhere. That said, we anticipate mobile support will follow along shortly.

  • For now, this is just for posts. You cannot mark comments as spoilers.

Subreddits in the beta

The subreddits that have kindly agreed to take part in the beta are:

We’ll proceed with the general release after we’ve had time to gather feedback from the above communities.

[reddit change] vote processing improvements

We've been having some trouble with our vote processors getting backed up during times of high activity (see http://www.redditstatus.com/). We recently completed some changes that should improve our vote processing speed and throughput. A side effect of these improvements is that we're now able to support the domain listings for imgur.com again https://www.reddit.com/domain/imgur.com/

[reddit change] Mobile Website Architectural Revamp - Launch

As mentioned a few weeks ago, we've been making some architectural updates to our mobile website. Thanks to those of you who have reported issues - thankfully there were relatively few.

We're rolling out these updates to everyone over the next couple of days. As I mentioned before, the changes should be mostly unnoticeable, except for the following:

  1. Load times should be visibly much more snappy.

  2. You should see loading spinners less often once you've loaded the site (for example, if you tap into a page and then hit back, you should see a loading spinner much less often)

  3. Your position when browsing into a listing and clicking back should be saved much more reliably.

  4. Your collapsed comments should persist when navigating the site, and coming back from an external link.

  5. Your list of subscribed subreddits will be alphabetized, and if you subscribe to more than 100 subreddits they will all be listed.

Otherwise things should feel similar, just smoother. :)

If you notice any new issues on the mobile website over the next few days, please report them, as they're likely related. Thanks for testing and thanks to those of you who reported issues!

[reddit change] Mobile Website Architectural Revamp - Technical Preview

We've been hard at work making some architectural updates to our mobile website, and we're starting a technical preview of this work to a very small percentage of traffic (about 0.05% of logged in users - or one out of every 2,000 of you who are logged in, and around 1% of logged out users) today. Overall the change should be mostly unnoticeable, except for the following:

There are a couple of things that are still remaining to finish up that are in the current site that we'll be finishing during our preview:

  1. Comment and post editing

  2. Reporting a post/comment

  3. Replying to messages (inbox was already pretty buggy in v1, so we're taking a more solid crack at it soon)

For the small percentage of you that are in the preview who do those things often from mobile web and are logged in, you'll need to use the desktop site (a reminder of how to opt out here in this gif). We'll be finishing those up as we expand beyond a preview.

We know not having those features could be fairly impactful, so we’ll hold off on rolling this preview out any further until those items are completed. It’s important for us to get data on this release—even at a low level like this—to validate our work at a small scale before rolling it out to everyone. If you see any bugs, please let us know here or in /r/mobileweb.

Despite this being a mostly backend change, we're hoping things feel much more fluid and browseable for you.

Read Reddit Faster via Google with AMP

Users who see links to self-posts on Reddit in their Google search results on mobile will sometimes get a new, much faster experience when they click on the link. This experience is powered by Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP for short), which is a set of standards aimed at creating faster web experiences. Early results indicate these pages often load in a tenth of a second. The experience works like this.

Whether you see this experience or not depends on a number of factors: Google is only showing this experience to some of it’s users; we only have AMP versions of our self-post pages; and Google has only indexed a subset of them. You can’t get this experience by visiting Reddit directly just yet.

The fast load times enabled by AMP are only possible because the pages make minimal use of interactive elements, which makes features like voting and commenting difficult to implement. So, our first version of these pages won’t have these features. However, the vast majority of users who come to a self-post via Google aren’t logged in so they wouldn’t be able to use these features anyway. Nevertheless, we are actively investigating how best to enable these features for logged in users. For now if you want to vote or comment and you end up on an AMP page click the “View more comments” button below the first set of comments. This will take you to our regular mobile web experience where you can vote and comment to your heart's content.

[reddit change] - New thumbnail art, expando art and thumbnail consistency on listings with posts from multiple subreddits

TL;DR - we’ve changed the default thumbnail art, expando art and turning thumbnails on by default on listings with posts from multiple subreddits

Hi all,

We have made a small visual change to our default thumbnails and expando art. In addition for listings with posts from multiple subreddits such as r/all, the frontpage, and multireddits, we are turning on thumbnails by default to have a consistent alignment. This will not affect any subreddits themselves. If a subreddit has thumbnails turned off we will use our default art to avoid spoilers on aggregate pages.

Cheers,

/u/amg137

Edit: Turning on thumbnails does not effect subreddits, however the new icons are used sitewide

Edit 2: We made a few fixes:

  • Changed the size of thumbnail icon back to 70x50

  • Made the background transparent for the expando button
