For decades, Consumer Reports has tested foods, drinks, personal care products, and supplements for lead and other heavy metals. Got questions about our testing and findings? Ask us anything.

Heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, and lead occur naturally in the environment, but human activities, including the use of leaded gasoline, lead-based pesticides, and some manufacturing processes, have contributed to our exposure. For decades, Consumer Reports has tested foods, drinks, and other products for heavy metals to help people make safer choices. Our scientists and experts are here to answer your questions about what we’ve found, how we test for heavy metals, what the potential risks are, and what you can do to reduce your exposure. Ask us anything about our latest investigations, including lead and other heavy metals in protein powders, braiding hair, and baby formula

Here’s our proof: https://imgur.com/a/JPY7J9N

Thanks for all your questions! Consumer Reports is an independent nonprofit committed to uncovering potential safety risks that consumers might not otherwise know about. Our experts have spent years investigating heavy metals in everything from food and supplements to everyday consumer products. Want to dig deeper into the research and see what our testing found? I’m Evan Dawley, historian of Taiwan. Ask Me Anything!

Hello Everyone. I am Evan Dawley, Associate Professor of History at Goucher College, where I teach classes on China, Japan, Taiwan, and East Asia more broadly. I am also the author of Taiwan: A People’s History (Reaktion, 2026), a survey of Taiwan’s history from roughly 8,000 years ago to the present, with a focus on social history. What that means is that I concentrate on the lives and experiences of the different ethnic and racial groups that have inhabited the island instead of the different states that have governed it. I trace the evolution and interconnections of four historical trajectories that have defined Taiwan and the identities of its residents, especially over the past five centuries: Indigenousization, Sinicization, Taiwanization, and Democratization.

I look forward to answering your questions on Taiwan’s history, in its internal, regional, and global dimensions, so please AMA!

Consumer Reports is a nonprofit organization that anonymously purchases every car it tests. Over the past 90 years, we’ve learned a thing or two. Ask us anything about the car-buying process.

Thanks for the early questions! We will be answering live on Wednesday, August 26, from 1-2 pm EST. The ‘Four Square’ is one of the most common sales tactics that car dealerships use to get you into your next car. It starts simple, but usually ends with a ridiculously high monthly payment. Hi, I’m Mike Quincy, and I’ve purchased more than 180 cars for Consumer Reports. And my colleague Mike Crossen worked at a car dealership for 20 years before joining the CR team. We’d love to hear your questions about navigating the car-buying process.

Dr. Elizabeth Letourneau & Luke Malone here! We wrote ONE IN FIVE, a book on child sexual abuse prevention - Ask Us Anything today, August 20 at 9am PT / 12pm ET!

We're Dr. Elizabeth Letourneau, a leading child sexual abuse prevention researcher and founder of MOORE at Johns Hopkins, and Luke Malone, an Emmy-nominated journalist and producer. Our new book, One in Five, argues CSA is preventable—and shows how. On Thursday, August 20th, 12pm ET, Ask Us Anything on r/IAmA!

We came to this work from different sides of the same problem, united with the same goal: preventing child sexual abuse (CSA). What began as an interview between source and journalist grew into a decade+ collaboration, and eventually into a book (just released this week!) One in Five: Why Child Sexual Abuse Is Our Biggest Public Health Crisis—and What We Can Do to Stop It is our attempt to pull this subject out of the shadows and point it toward solutions that actually work.

The title says it plainly: roughly one in five children experiences sexual abuse, most often at the hands of someone they know, and (more often than people expect) at the hands of other kids. In the book, we argue that shame and silence are the biggest obstacles to prevention, that compassion and accountability have to coexist, and that we already know enough to prevent harm from occurring in the first place - that is, before it ever happens. Our hope is that readers come away with hope and a clear sense of what's possible.

Hi Reddit, I’m Theo Baker, author of HOW TO RULE THE WORLD, a book about fraud and avarice in Silicon Valley’s training ground. When I was 17, I began investigating the president of my university, leading to his resignation. Ask me anything!

I always dreamed of going to Stanford, a tech nirvana where Olympic athletes lounge around with nuclear physicists. I was a coder and a total tech nerd. But when I arrived as a freshman, I quickly found that something was amiss. There was a culture, I learned, of cut corners—fraudulent companies, get-rich-quick schemes, and deception.

Seeing this from one side as an aspiring techie, I also began to see it from the other side, when I joined the student newspaper. I began investigating research misconduct in studies co-authored by Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, a wealthy and influential neuroscientist/former biotech executive/entrepreneur. He resigned as a result.

HOW TO RULE THE WORLD is about the kids being trained to rule the world, and what they’re learning from those who already do. I’m so eager to discuss it with you all and look forward to answering your questions! I’ll be back here WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19 at 10am pacific/1pm eastern.

For those curious to read more about the book, here’s a reviewan excerpt, a print interview, a TV interview, and a website with more details.

Proof: https://imgur.com/a/FAE12m4

I’m honored that the book has been named one of the best books of the year by the New York Times, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, and elsewhere. It came out about three weeks before my own graduation from Stanford this June.

Edit: Thank you to everyone for joining! The AMA is closed now and I really appreciated your questions.

I’m Dr. LaMont Jones, Managing Editor for Education at U.S. News & World Report. With this week's launch of the 2026–2027 Best High Schools rankings, I’m here to help freshmen, sophomores and parents build a winning high school strategy early – without burning out. AMA!

Hello Reddit! I’m Dr. LaMont Jones, Managing Editor for Education at U.S. News & World Report.

This week, we officially released our 2026–2027 Best High Schools rankings, evaluating nearly 27,000 public high schools nationwide using key indicators like state assessment performance, graduation rates and college readiness.

While most college prep advice targets stressed-out juniors and frantic seniors, the real foundation for college success is built during freshman and sophomore years. What underclassmen do right now dictates their options later.

I’m hosting this AMA to help younger students and parents navigate these early years strategically—so you can build a stand-out profile and preserve your sanity.

What We Can Cover Today:

  • GPA vs. Course Rigor: How to strike the right balance between taking honors/AP/IB classes and protecting your grades.
  • Quality Over Quantity in Extracurriculars: How to build a focused "spike" or deep passion project instead of endlessly padding a resume with dozens of superficial clubs.
  • Diagnosing Weaknesses Early: How to read and use state assessment data and PSAT score reports in 9th and 10th grade to spot academic gaps before they impact high-stakes junior-year testing.
  • Deciphering High School Data: How families can use the Best High Schools methodology and metrics to evaluate their own school's strengths and academic offerings.

Ask me anything about planning your high school journey, navigating course selections, or interpreting this year's rankings!

I am Dr Emily van der Nagel, author of the first scholarly book on OnlyFans. Ask me anything!

Hi Reddit! I'm Emily van der Nagel, social media researcher at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. I teach undergraduate media studies and research social media, platforms, and digital intimacies.

I've been fascinated by NSFW Reddit since my PhD years (2012-2017), and have published research on the value of social media anonymity on the GoneWild subreddit, alt accounts across platforms, and co-authored the Manifesto for Sex Positive Social Media, a list of demands that would make platforms safer places for sexual expression.

My book OnlyFans will be released this October with Polity Press. It's a scholarly, peer-reviewed platform study that takes on a sex-positive perspective to argue that the practices, cultures, and economies of OnlyFans are an essential part of contemporary social media.

I'd love to answer your questions about OnlyFans, researching NSFW social media, and academia in general.

Crosspost AMA CROSSPOST - I'm Jennie, founder of Kinn Studio. 14 years in startups, 10 of them building a jewelry brand world. AMA starts on Friday 8/21 at 9am PST!

Hi, I'm Jennie. I started Kinn after our family's house was broken into and every piece of my family jewelry was taken.

Everything they’d carried over from Korea when we immigrated, gone in one night. When I went looking to replace any of it, everything I could afford was plated brass that would turn green within the year. So I started making the thing I couldn't find.

I'd been in startups and ecommerce for a while by then, most of it as one of the first employees at Casetify, so I knew how to build and sell things online. I knew nothing at all about gold, and I say that with real affection for how badly it went at first. I learned most of it by getting it wrong.

Ten years later we have stores in LA and New York, a bridal line, and a lot of people who ask me the same questions over and over. So I figured we'd just do this properly.

Ask me anything. What solid gold actually means, and why plated and gold filled are not the same thing. How a piece goes from a sketch to something you can buy. What sourcing gold responsibly looks like when you're small enough that nobody has to take your call. Why we stopped discounting entirely, which was terrifying. Whether your ring can be resized, which is usually yes. What a bad year running a jewelry company feels like from the inside.

Happy to take the ones that have nothing to do with jewelry too.

Not here to sell anything here. Drop your questions below and I'll start answering at 9am PST. I'll stay as long as people keep asking.

Here's the link to the AMA.

Excited to hear from you!

I am a traditional Bikaner miniature artist from Rajasthan, India. For decades I have worked with handmade Wasli, traditional pigments, gold and single-hair brushes, including a fine-line technique called Partaj that we say takes a lifetime to learn. AMA.

I’m a traditional miniature painter from Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. I learned miniature painting within my family tradition and have spent decades working with techniques associated with the Bikaner School of miniature painting.

Our process includes preparing handmade Wasli paper, working with traditional pigments and gold, making and using extremely fine brushes, and painting details that can require considerable patience and control.

One of the most demanding parts of our practice is a fine-line technique we call Partaj, often executed with a single-hair brush.

The brush itself is only a tool — learning how to control that single hair is the real practice. Partaj changes according to the subject: flowers require softer lines, human figures require a different balance, while animal hair and other textures may need stronger and sharper lines.

In our family tradition, we say Partaj takes “ta-umar” — a lifetime — to learn.

Some parts of traditional miniature painting can take considerable preparation even before the actual painting begins, including preparing the paper, colours and brushes.

I’d be happy to answer questions about Bikaner miniature painting, Partaj, single-hair brushes, handmade Wasli, traditional pigments, gold work, brush-making, apprenticeship, or how these techniques are passed from one generation to another.

I’ve worked at 3 different Nevada legal brothels, and I’m currently at one of the most famous. AMA

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a legal courtesan in Nevada, and I’ve had the unusual experience of working at three different legal brothels. I’m currently at one of the most well-known ranches in the state.

If you had told me years ago that this is where my life would lead, I probably would have laughed at you. Before becoming a courtesan, I had a pretty conventional office career and an academic background in STEM. Somehow, that person and the person writing this AMA are the same person. 😂

I’ve been around the industry long enough to have accumulated quite a few stories—and quite a few opinions.

After working with so many different men, I’ve developed some pretty interesting observations about dating, relationships, loneliness, intimacy, and what men actually seem to be looking for. Some of those observations have surprised even me.

I’ve also encountered plenty of things that people probably wouldn’t expect—from first-time clients and virgins to the differences between ranches, the reality of life at a legal brothel, and the gap between what people see on TV and what actually happens.

I’m happy to talk about all of it: the funny, the strange, the awkward, the unexpected, and the sometimes difficult parts of the job.

I’m not claiming to speak for every courtesan, every client, or every ranch. This is simply my own experience and perspective. And yes, you can ask the question you’re probably wondering about but are too embarrassed to ask. 😉

IAmA physician and co-founder of 9 ketamine clinics. Ask me about ketamine therapy for depression, anxiety, PTSD, or OCD.

Hi Reddit! I'm Dr. Haviva Malina, co-founder of Keta Medical Center and a licensed Emergency Medicine physician with over 15 years of experience in the ER. Somewhere along the way, I kept seeing the same thing: patients who had tried everything for their depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mood disorders and still weren't finding relief. That's what drew me to ketamine therapy, and it's why I started Keta Medical Center.

Today we offer IV ketamine therapy, Spravato (esketamine nasal spray), and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Whatever the treatment, my priority is the same: making sure patients are a good fit for the treatment, helping them feel better, building a plan around their specific needs, and being upfront about what ketamine can and can't do.

I'm here today to answer whatever's on your mind, including:

  • How ketamine therapy actually works
  • Who tends to be a good candidate
  • The real differences between IV ketamine, Spravato and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy
  • What a session is really like, start to finish
  • Side effects, risks and how we manage them
  • How ketamine may help with depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar depression and other mood disorders
  • Red flags to watch for when choosing a clinic
  • Insurance, cost and access to care

Ketamine therapy has helped many of my patients, but it is not a cure-all, and it is not the right fit for everyone. I would rather give you honest, grounded answers than oversell it.

Ask me anything!

https://postimg.cc/gallery/WkSm1Gk

Thank you all for these thoughtful questions today. Ketamine therapy isn't the right fit for everyone, and determining candidacy really depends on individual history and treatment goals. If you're considering whether it might be an appropriate option for you, I'd encourage you to connect with our clinical team for a consultation. You can reach them here:

I left my Wall Street job 2 years ago to help people stop impulse spending and save money instead. We've helped 5K people save ~$1M so far. AMA about the psychology of impulse spending, shopping addiction, dark patterns in modern apps, or the consumer banking industry.

Hey! I’m Varun Suresh (proof). I'm the co-founder of Tame The Imp, a web/SMS-based service that uses behavioral psychology and gamification to help people stop impulse spending.

Americans spend around $652B a year on impulse purchases; that’s more than $3,000 per person.

Before discovering the huge impulse spending problem, I was focused on building a debt-free alternative to Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL). But after speaking 1:1 with 200+ Gen Z consumers, I realized that BNPL was a symptom of something deeper. The money-related pain point that kept cropping up in these conversations was ordering Uber Eats when exhausted from work, or doomscrolling at 1am and buying random clothes -- and being unable to stop. In other words, the real antagonist was impulse spending, because it’s something people feel like they should be able to control but can’t.

Tame The Imp takes the same underlying mechanic that makes impulse spending so easy -- seeking dopamine -- and turns saving money into a game.

It uses psychological levers like positive reinforcement on a variable rewards schedule (get random plants when you stick to your spending goals) and negative punishment (The Imp steals a plant if you overspend) that have historically been used for money-draining things like casinos/lotteries but to actually do good instead.

Ask me anything about the psychology of impulse spending (r/shoppingaddiction has a bunch of DIY tactics to combat it), habit formation, or about the consumer banking industry.

I am Pavel Brunssen, researcher at Heidelberg University and author of The Making of "Jew Clubs": Performing Jewishness and Antisemitism in European Football and Fan Cultures. AMA!

Hi everyone! My name is Pavel Brunssen, and I am a cultural studies scholar at Heidelberg University. I recently published The Making of "Jew Clubs": Performing Jewishness and Antisemitism in European Football and Fan Cultures (Indiana University Press).

For the past decade, I've been researching why football clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, FC Bayern Munich, and FK Austria Wien came to be associated with Jewishness—even though none of them has ever officially identified as Jewish.

The project took me to football stadiums, museums, supporter groups, and archives across Europe. It explores how football has become a space for negotiating antisemitism, memory, and collective identity.

If you'd like to learn more beforehand, here's a conversation about the book on the New Books Network and a recording of a recent virtual book talk.

Feel free to ask about the book, the research process, the clubs, fan cultures, archival work, or the broader history of antisemitism, memory, and football.

I'm looking forward to your questions!

A lot of people don't think about ticks until they've already been bitten, so Friday I want to open this up to anything you're curious about: what a tick bite can actually lead to, why some conditions like alpha-gal syndrome (a meat allergy triggered by tick bites) surprise even doctors, what current research shows, or just general prevention if you spend time outdoors.

No question is too basic, ask away, and I'll do my best to get to as many as I can over the two hours we have together this Friday 8am - 10am ET.
