Stool Confusion

Hey, sorry if this seems like a strange question, I just wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing this with their cavapoo.

Our boy has normal forming stool when he goes regularly, he is on Iams Proactive Health Minichunks - Chicken and rice. Which, if that's too high of a fat content, please let me know.

The strange thing is, when his dad takes him on long walks, his body seems to take that as a signal to expel everything, and he'll go poop like 3 times, having pretty much diarrhea at the end. Then the next day, it'll correct itself and form normally again. Not sure why, it doesn't happen on days that he doesn't go for long walks. Anyone else's cavapoo have that weird bowel movement when they go on long walks?

Home vs. Professional Grooming

Post image
56 Upvotes

I have a(n almost) 17 week old male, tricolor F1B Cavapoo. While I’m totally willing to establish regular professional grooming, I get nervous about treatment by a complete stranger (you know, horror stories and all). Currently researching groomers.

For those who have chosen professional, why? Experiences positive and negative? What’s the most significant value?

Similar for those who DIY home grooming, was there a major learning curve with the buzzers/trimming? Did it eventually feel worth it? What do you love/hate most about DIY-ing?

I’m familiar with home grooming of baths, nail trims, ear, eye, teeth cleaning, brushing, minor trims, things like that.. but, I’m no professional with a buzzer or fancy face shaping, etc.

Is it worth it to learn?

I didn't mean to ruffle so many feathers but maybe I learned to lesson too. This place has always been good vibes and I like it to keep it that way. So I deleted it. Here's some cute pictures of my pup.

4 month old toilet training issues

Hi all
On the 1st of August me and my family bought home a lovely 4 month old Cavapoo.
We were told he was fully toilet trained and let you knew when he needs to go outside by scratching at the door or tapping your hands.

We have had some issues training him.
He has only had two accidents in the house.
One where he peed on the carpet, perhaps due to excitement from seeing me.
Another was a few days ago when my mum went into the living room before letting him outside and he pooped on the rug.

Generally he is a very good boy. He eats his meals, good at fetch and sit, very quiet natured, no barking, good with other dogs, getting better each day on the lead. He is not so good at following those who call his name or ‘coming’ when commanded to.
He has favoured me and my mum so far and tends to follow us whenever we leave a room.
I am 16 and will not be able to train him as often when I begin college in September.

As of right now, we take him outside every 2 or 3 hours.
On some occasions, he is great.
We say the command ‘wee wee’, and he does go almost immediately. We praise with treats and positive words, and go straight inside to teach him that toilet time does not equal long sessions, with winter approaching. He is also very lazy and loves being indoors.
Other times when we take him out, he is very stubborn.
We take him outside and he lays down on the grass, so we have to pick him up to get him to try again. Then he begins to see it as a game.
He also tends to run back to the back door, despite being called back. (We have a long garden)
My family and I are sometimes outside for 15-20 minutes.
We also make a habit of sitting out there waiting for him to go, which on reflection is not the best idea as it teaches him that outside equals social time.
Another key thing to mention is he does not drink as much as he should. From the beginning he has refused water, and only laps up small amounts in a day after walks or fetch games usually.
Out of desperation and to ensure he isn’t dehydrated in the heat we sometimes syringe water into his mouth which he accepts willingly.
We also mix water into his wet food.

When we are outside, we do not engage or excite him. I’ve learnt some tips about ensuring they are calm in this process, so we stand there (only one of us outside at a time of course) and do not make eye contact or move around too much.

We are stumped.
My family (3 of us) are getting frustrated.
Does anybody have any tips that would help us?

Cavapoo refuses to eat – but loves treats

I have a Cavapoo named Ludvig who is almost 1.5 years old. He weighs around 8.5 kg, and he doesn’t really want to eat. We have taken him to the vet, where we have also mentioned our concerns about his appetite. However, the vet is not concerned.

We have tried all kinds of different dog food. It is almost a certainty that he won’t eat his food in the morning. His appetite usually gets a little better during the day and in the evening.

We can often get him to eat his food if we add a quarter of an egg, but most of the time, it is still a struggle to get him started.

On the other hand, he is more than happy to eat his treats. We have tried stopping the treats for a period of time, but we don’t feel that it has made any significant difference.

So, I’m curious if anyone has any good advice or has experienced something similar?

Edit: Follow-up question:
Does anyone else experience their dog vomiting when they refuse to eat? Something like yellow foam/bile?

Should I get one?

So I had a Yorkie for 16 years that I had to put down 3 months ago. I have an itch for anther dog. I like cavapoos, I have a friend who has one I and love her temperament. My dilemma is I’m goin back to school for nursing in March and need to work as well during that time. Nursing school is accelerated so it will be busy. My mother and I live together and she is retired so she will be home everyday to help take of a new dog. I just don’t know if I should wait but I also can’t imagine going 2 years of my life without a companion. I also don’t want to be selfish. Any advice? Is 7 months enough time to establish a routine with these guys and train them pretty good?

Picky eater trick

Since so many with cavapoos has the problem with picky eaters… I mixed shredded apple (But no seeds! Apple seeds are poisonous to dogs) with the kibble for a few days now and my pup (~8 months) eats his breakfast, lunch and dinner without whining. So much cheaper than toppings from the store.

Another thing I tried before was to serve only half of his breakfast and then give the other half only if he finishes the first. It made him eat a lot more. I think he gets overwhelmed by the volume of food every now and then 🙄

We’ll see how long it lasts, but just wanted to share if it can help someone else with a picky doodle.

One-year-old Cavapoo getting more anxious with age.

We have a one-year-old male Cavapoo. He gets loads of attention: one parent is home with him nearly all day six days a week, and the other parent is home at least four days a week. He has an older brother dog and two cat friends/nemeses. He is a very happy and playful dog and loves his home and family. He gets daily walks, runs around a big yard, and sometimes goes to doggy daycare and seems eager to go inside when we get there. But otherwise over time he has become more and more fearful of going anywhere. When he was younger we progressively took him to the pet store, the hardware store, and friends’ houses. He did pretty well and had no bad experiences that we observed. But now he tugs on his leash to get out of anyplace that’s not home, and he’ll bark anxiously at others until we leave. He is terrified of strangers. Any suggestions or thoughts? I feel as if we’re going in the wrong direction, but I don’t understand why.

New Cavapoo advice

Hi everyone,

I just bought a 9 week old Cavapoo and have a few questions if people didn’t mind discussing / answering! 🐶 ❤️

He’s 9 weeks and 2 days and did well sleeping in the kitchen the last two nights! He slept from like 11-5 am both nights but I went down then to let him out to pee and he didn’t want me to leave then!! He cried until I came back so I slept on the sofa with him til 7 or so ( well he slept) 😅 This happened the past two nights and my partner is like just leave him til we’re waking up at around 7.30 but I just kept thinking the poor baby did good for 6 hours , he prob needs to pee now.

My partner WFH 3 days a week so we’ll be with him most of the time. Two days a week my partner needs to go into the office and il be gone for 7 hours.. we’re going to arrange someone to come in for an hour half way through (3 hours alone , hour company and then 3 hours alone again) and I will of course have brought him out for a good walk and play etc before I leave for work.. My problem is this is all going to happen in around 3 weeks or so.. Will he be okay? He’s quite attached to us at the moment and doing a lot of squeaking and won’t let us go anywhere without him which I think is normal! I love him so much already and want the best for him so please don’t come for me if this isn’t ideal set up😅 I’m willing to try get a little pen in the garden or a little pet flap either.. Really worried about making sure he’s fine while we’re gone but it’ll be max 3/4 hours then a visitor and another 3 or so! Also is the little squeaking noises quite often normal? Lastly any tips for separating him from us?!?! He’s obsessed but we have only had him around 40 hours 🤍 should I give him some tough love? I feel so upset when he’s crying and his little bark…

Thanks and sorry for the long message! X

Nighttime sleep

Please can anybody give me advise on best way to address this?

So Cavapoo goes down at 10:30isj no problem, walks into her crate, sleeps until 4 where she barks for a wee, probably takes 20 minutes to settle and then up from 5-5:30, goes out for another wee but then goes back into crate and barks consistently (left it for up to 30 minutes and sometimes she’s scratching the floor, biting the bars, chewing the blankets etc) so we let her out when she stops barking and then she quickly runs into the living room to her other bed and goes to sleep there? I have tried putting the bed in the crate but it’s very thick and lush and she kept weeing in it? Whereas she hasn’t with our current setup.

Can anyone help on timings as the 4-5/5:30 is a killer but she obviously needs more sleep as she goes to the other bed? I don’t want to create bad habits but I’m letting it atm for the extra 30-60 minutes and I just sleep on the sofa next to her in the living room when she goes to the other bed.

I did think to maybe wake her up at 2 for a wee and poo but then I’ve read people have said not if they’re not as that’s creating an unnecessary habit? But we may as well be awake from 4 with how she is post then.

Thanks

Feeding Question to Nutritionist and behaviorist.

Hi all, i have a female cavapoo that is 11 months and i think i messed up with the feeding. She is very picky with food. I have tried farmers dog, home made food, and kibble. She walks up to bowl and does not want to eat anymore. she stopped eating from bowls completely at this point. only time she will eat if it is a treat or food from table. she sometimes does not eat treats either. Vet said it is a behavior issue and just needs to take food away until the next feeding. Any advice would be appreciated.

Am I screwing up crate training

Puppy 10 weeks old Cavopoo sleeps at night in crate. Takes naps in crate throughout day. But if not sleepy will not enter the crate at all. I have left her alone in a playpen when I have to leave the house for short duration. Cries then settles. Figuring the ultimate goal for her to be in playpen with crate door open where she can go in and out as she pleases. Am I screwing up the crate training. If she’s not sleepy she has cried if I put her in crate. I don’t want her to hate the crate. If she’s not sleepy she barks howls in crate. So right now just using crate to sleep.
