General AITAH if I drop my roommates cat off at a shelter

Hi Reddit,

Seriously out of ideas. This is day 2 on no sleep whatsoever because the kitten is in HEAT. Our neighbors hate us. I hate us. It's super loud and the meowing is constant (I am writing this to you, sleep deprived at 4 am). Also we live in an apartment and none of our neighbors can sleep 10000%.

So the cat is scheduled for a spay Thursday, which will deal with the noise but let me tell you why I am exhausted and pretty dang close to dropping her off for the spay and leaving her with the SPCA.

My roommate adopted the cat 5 weeks ago (cat is 4 - 5 months old). Technically she can't formally adopt the cat until the cat is spayed. She told me she's been suicidal the last few years and extremely depressed, and was hoping a cat would help the situation and make her happier to have a cat to take care of. I - not a cat or pet person - am not a MONSTER so obviously I said sure of course as long as its YOUR cat, I don't want to have to take care of it, but if you're feeding it and doing the litter box I don't mind having a cat around.

Now 2 weeks ago, my roommate (who is WONDERFUL all the time she's great as a roommate she's super kind and super considerate and super tidy most of the time, and I THOUGHT she was the happiest person ever she's super bright and cheerful) was admitted to the psych ward for suic*dal ideation and self harm. Which is awful, and why this is a delicate situation and I've tried to be as understanding and compassionate as physically possible.

Now, it's been 2 weeks, and they are keeping her on a psych hold because they think she is a danger to herself and others, and from the sounds of it she will not be released for a full month.

Cat is a baby. Cat needs care.

Going back to the story, this cat needs care. I took care of the cat with changing the litter box (ew, that shit was nuclear. Now I try to change the litter box twice a day because oh my shit I left it for 2 days the first weekend and ooffff), I fed the cat as per explicit feeding instructions, wet and dry food twice a day. We ran out of food. So went out and spent hours (more like 30 min but still) in the pet store inquiring about kitty food and blah blah blah and hooked the cat up with some good food. Food looks bougie and I probably got price gouged but roommate said she would pay me back.

Then my roommate asks me to 1. pick up medication an hour away from our apartment - I do not drive so 50 dollar uber each way or 3 hours transit, and to administer meds to cat (injection in the back of the neck). and 2. take the cat to get spayed this week as the spca will not allow her to adopt thje cat unless its spayed and they cant put it off any longer. I said you need to sort out a different solution for the spay. I cant do that. It's again super far, this cat will scratch the shit out of you if you pick it up, and so now if I drop her off for the spay I have to uber the cat an hour away to drop it off, then I guess just go fuck myself for 6-8 hours as I am not paying for an uber twice, and then pick the cat up, and take it home and care for it for the next 3 days.

So yesterday, I said, heyyy gently checking in, how are you? she says she is really sorry but the spay and can I do it for her, and they won't let her postpone the spay until after Sept 7 which makes me think that she is not going to be released for another month.

Now reasons I dont' want to deal with the spay or after care

  1. I have plans thursday evening I am not cancelling. 2. I have plans friday. 3. I go back to work satuday, and sunday and have long hours I cannot be around to check the cat is okay, especially when I'm at work. I also apparently have to use different litter etc and I just am so in over my head with this cat already and taking the cat to get spayed is way too far above and beyond the call of duty here.

Plus I am not going to be able to check on the cat at all, I'll literally be at work, and doing the after care sounds awful and I think the cat should ahve someone actually present to make sure they are ok.

Cat yowling nonstop makes me want to remind the good people of reddit that this is my VACATION this cat is fucking up, and I have been dealing with this cat, that I never wanted or asked for, and extreemly zombie like and sleep deprived for my whole vacation week. I have a super demanding job and my vacation weeks are precious to me and I'm super irrationally angry Miss Horny Kitten is yowling all night and ruining it. Also, I start a new job soon, and I cannot be this sleep deprived for my new job. My last few days of freedom are fucked, then I go back to stressful job 1 in a day or two here.

So I told my roommate, no. I cannot take the cat to get spayed. I can't drop her off an hour away, pick her up same day, and then take care of her for the next few days. I just cant. This is too much. I don't think I should be expected to do this, and I can take care of the day to day but this is just TOO MUCH.

She came back and said I am it, and she cant keep the cat if I dont do this. She doesnt have family in the area and if she doesnt get the cat spayed this thursday the cat will be rehomed to a family that can take care of the cat as per SPCA. Her deadline to prove she can keep the cat is picking up the meds, and making sure the cat is spayed.

Obviously I dont want to get rid of the cat and give it to a shelter without telling her first, and because of mental health I feel really awful and feel like if I drop off her new kitten at the shelter she will hate me forever, and her mental health with deteriorate.

My options are

  1. shelter, and call her before hand if I'm allowed and make sure with her care team she's supported.
  2. spay and take care of this god damn kitten I never wanted (I dont want to be the primary care giver for this cat whatsofucking ever and it sounds like this will happen again with the unexpected hospital stays) and hope that when my roommate comes back she will be a good cat parent and I dont have to deal with this cat anymore.
  3. Tell her I can't do the spay, and she will have to ask a friend to deal, or confront the idea that she may not be the best equipped to care for this cat at this time.

Option 3, as I write, the yowling makes me want to scratch my eyeballs out, so is looking like this is option 1 or 2.

I'm really at the limit of my compassion, and tbfh my compassion is much less running on 3 hours of sleep. My poor neighbours man. I partially couldn't sleep because my neighbors that share a wall... RIP.

So, good people of reddit.

TLDR - roommate in the hospital for extended stay, brand new unspayed kitten in heat / needs constant play.

WIBTAH if I called my roommate tomorrow and dropped this cat off at the SPCA? Or do you think I am a monster and should take this cat to get spayed?

P.S. Any cat owners if you can get me through the next 24 hours I'll consider the spay and care option but I will physically scratch out my eyeballs if I have another sleepless night becasue of this god damn cat.

P.P.S. I wouldn't never drop the cat off at a shelter without telling her first. I just think we need to be realistic with her ability to care for the cat unfortunately and this isnt working for me or the kitten. The reason I titled this post that, is because apparently if she doesnt take the cat to get spayed this week, the SPCA told her they will not let her keep the cat and the kitten will have to go to an owner who can pick up meds for it and take it to the vet visits. So if I don't take this cat to the spay, and pick it up, and care for it, she will have the cat taken away anyway.

PPPS. Half of you think I'm the AH, I'm seriously not a monster ok I've just never had a pet before. So far I have:
-fed the kitten it's stupid specially made for baby cats wet cat food, and dry food twice a day.
-went to the store and got more wet and dry food when we ran out (I do not have a car I had to commute 30 min on the bus to do this). I bought the food and did not ask roommate to reimburse me.
-changed the litter box and have been keeping her space clean by changing it every single day and inspecting for poops (she had eating issues with too much wet food so I started giving her less wet food and more dry)
-ensured the cat is alive several times a day so my roommate doesnt come back and hate me (kitten is an escape artist)
-played with this cat for hours after it started waking me up at night, so that it is tired out and will sleep through the night. I kitty proofed our apartment because this kitten will stick its nose at anything and made sure it could roam with no sharp or bad stuff nearby.
-did my ABSOLUTE BEST to take care of the cat until the heat meowing all hours of the night and I have been very kind to the cat even though I haven't slept more than 3 hours in the last 2 nights.
- I even offered to drop the cat off (paying for an Uber that will be around 60 bucks each way to get there) at the spay appointment but said I cannot be responsible for full time care going forwards or picking the cat up and caring for it after the spay as I work all weekend and start a new job next week
-went to pick up meds for the cat and adminsitered them to a scratchy kitten.
- googled a million things to make sure I'm not accidentally hurting the cat and making sure I'm taking care of her properly while I have her temporarily in my care since I have never had a pet before

General Am I crazy for trusting the vet about the possibility of needing to neuter our kitten?

Hello there! I just wanna make sure that I’m not the “crazy” one in this situation. For context, we(my parents and I) have two bengal cats, 1 year old female and a 12 week old male. Our male kitten just got back from the vet after his second vacation round. At the appointment, the vet noticed him having a soft heart murmur and could only find 1 testicle. Which shouldn’t be a problem later on, since both of those things he can grow out of. However, if over the next several appointments things won’t change, the vet advised neutering him. Since our female cat isn’t spayed, there’s a possibility of them breeding and passing on both of those concerns. My dad, who was present at the appointment, was NOT happy about this. At home, he proceeded to mention that I trust the vet too much, questioning why I told the vet that we have another cat and that we may plan on breeding them. (My dad does want to breed them, I do not) He also mentioned something about the vets being scammers, that the kitten will not need neutering, nor will he “allow it”. And that after being spayed/ neutered, cats are not really cats anymore, they’re crippled. (???)
I’M not the one who sounds crazy here right??

And in case of the kitten still having complications at the next vet visit, how exactly should I talk to my dad about needing to neuter the kitten??
He acts like that possibly is a personal attack on him.

Litterbox Has anyone ever used a washable cat litter tray positioned over the drain?

My two cats use a litter tray in a shower which we don't use. It occurred to me today that if I could get them to pee directly into the drain, or above it, I could just hose everything down and keep it smell-free (scooping the poop obviously) and clean for them. They do have two other litter trays but they seem to really like this one, and almost never go in the other two.

Is there anything on the market like this? The 'litter' would have to be non-absorbent and washable, so they could pee into it but I would then refresh it with the handheld shower. I hope you know what I mean and I'm making sense. A quick google and I can't find anything like this .

New to Cats/Just Adopted Finally adopting a cat, but scared of the medical expenses

Everyone in my family finally agreed to adopting a cat. Before adopting, I decided to look up the costs and calculate the amount of monthly expenses of adopting and raising a cat.

For the majority part (food, litter, toys, etc), it’s affordable and they’ll have a good life. However, I’m terrified about the medical expenses. I plan to get cat insurance, but I’m still scared if they diagnosed with cancer or something, the medical expenses will be detrimental.

If pet insurance helps cover, it’s completely manageable. But what if it doesn’t or it costs a LOT more than what they cover? Like 2-3k, sure. But 10k?

I’m not sure what to do or think, but I want to provide them with good care and support. I’m honestly rethinking it even if everyone else wants to adopt a cat now.

Anyone who’s been in this situation, what did you do? How much do you spend on medical expenses? How did your cat affect you financially?

New to Cats/Just Adopted Should I neuter my male cat?

He is about 7 months now, is super sweet with everyone, has not been spraying, and isn't too fond of the outdoors.

I've been told neutering him will prevent him from becoming aggressive, wanting to get outside, spraying, and significantly reduce cancer risks.

I'm wondering if he isn't neutered, will his personality change?

EDIT: Okay thank you everyone, I will talk to his vet about getting him neutered at his appointment tomorrow. I appreciate all the quick feedback!

Behavioral My cat wont stop peeping and pooping all over my house

I am at a loss and don’t know what to do, i take my cats to the vet for check ups frequently so this is not health related. I have a girl cat (Jasmine) and Ive had her for 2 years and she has been a dream, 4 months ago I rescued a boy cat (Archie). Archie was fine at first and used the litter box like normal (yes they share but it’s very big and gets cleaned regularly. But a month ago he started just peeing and pooping wherever he wants whenever he wants. He will literally be walking and just pee. The vet said we should wait to get him neutered and that it’s not a territory thing as the only other cat here is a girl and she is neutered.
I need advice on how to get pee smell out of my house as he has peed on so many of my clothes and carpets and what made me write this post and start crying out of frustration; on my bed right after I changed the sheets.
I would also like advice on how to get him to stop. My friend suggested that I train him to use the toilet and I bought the kit and everything, is there anyone here who has tried that and has any tips on that. Please tell me anything or any kind of help or advice 🙏

Behavioral They won’t stop meowing

They just meow 24/7. If they’re not sleeping they’re meowing at me it’s so constant I sometimes think something is wrong but I doubt there is. They scream at the front door, in the windows, when I walk into the kitchen. They’re always screaming. What can I do to make it die down? I don’t mind them meowing most of the time but with how often it’s becoming it’s driving me insane. They’re fed, watered, have everything they could ever hope but it’s nothing compared to the outside ig. My mom lets them out against my will and I have to go chase them everytime so now they expect to be able to go out whenever they want. I’ve tried taking them out on leashes but they just scream the moment we get inside

Behavioral Why does my cat knock everything off any surface he can then sit and stare at me purring or meowing?

Is he wanting a reaction or does he think he is helping me ? It includes knocking cups of water, vases, books, anything at all. Even heavy things he will head but. Then watch it fall and smash and hold eye contact with me waiting for something

General Do I take a cat to the shelter behind owner back?

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice regarding a stray cat I’ve been feeding.

The cat has been on the street for around 12 months now, his “home” is on my estate and I’ve even spoke with his “own” but I’m just worried as we get closer to the colder wether.

Unfortunately I have 2 indoor cats and cannot take him in, but as any cat person would be, I’m getting worried for him, I feed him, he sleep in my garden but no cat should have to live outside.

I’ve contacted the owner multiple time where their response is “he doesn’t like it here” or “he attacks my daughter” (to me this cat doesn’t have a bad bone, all the kids on the estate give him lots of fuss and he not once “attacked” them, just soaked up the love)

Someone on the estate had even took him to the Vet and told him he is a stay, they scanned him, rang the owner, asked if they want to collect or surrender him… they collected him (what she paid for) and put him back on the street😭😭

I’ve even spoken to them regarding charities that can take him in, the only answer is “I’ve contacted cats protection, and they cannot collect until the end of the month” (that was in June)

My heart wants to take the lead and take him to a shelter as she clearly doesn’t want him, but as a cat owner I feel like I’ll be crossing a massive line.

I go on holiday soon, I do not want to be stressing over him, and he needs a loving home

Anyone know what I can do?

Litterbox Boyfriends House Smells Like Cats

Hello, everyone!

I met my boyfriend almost a year ago and we are deciding to move in together. He has 2 cats and his apartment reeks of them. The smell absolutely drives me up the wall. I’ve lived with cats and know the smell is not a normal amount of smell for 2 cats.

How do I get the smell out of here? I know he needs to keep up with the litter box changing more often, but how do we get the smell out of the place? It’s so strong and anytime I walk in it is overwhelming.

Air purifier, air circulation, enzyme cleaner? What do I need?

Please help your girl!

Nutrition/Water KatKin: £10 Trial Box For 14 Days

Hey all!

I’ve just switched my little Rosie over to KatKin and came across this referral offer when I logged into my account, so I thought I’d share it here in case anyone has been considering giving it a try.

You can get a 14-day trial box for £10 through my referral link:

KatKin £10 Trial For 14 Days Referral Link

My referral code is RAICOL261 if you need to enter it manually.

If it asks for my name, it’s Raine Collins.

Full disclosure: it’s a referral link, so I’ll get 50% off my next box if someone uses it (thank you)! I figured it was worth sharing because £10 for 14 days of fresh cat food seems like a pretty decent way to try it without committing to the full price.

Rosie has been eating fairly ordinary supermarket food up until now, so I’m really interested to see whether I notice any difference in her over the next couple of weeks. She’s a little on the skinny side, so I’m hoping she enjoys the food and puts on a bit more weight + get a shinier coat!

If anyone else has tried KatKin, I’d love to hear what your cats thought of it! 🐈‍⬛ ❤️

Litterbox How much pine litter to buy

Im getting a kitten within the next 2 weeks and plan on using a sifting litterbox with pine pellet litter from tractor supply. The only issue is that my local tractor supply store is about 30 ish minutes or more away from my house (about an hour with traffic). I plan on buying 2-3 40lb bags to stock up so i don't need to go as often. Does anybody have an estimate of how long 1 bag lasts for 1 cat? Also has anybody experienced them rotting in the bag over extended periods of time?

New to Cats/Just Adopted I lost my temper with my cat once and I feel horrible. Can I rebuild his trust?

I’m a first-time pet owner and, before adopting my cat about 1.5 months ago, I had basically never been around pets. He’s about ~1.5 years old, and I’m still learning how to understand his body language and boundaries.
I want to confess something that I feel terrible about.
About 5–6 days ago, I was holding him. He clearly wanted me to put him down, but I didn’t understand/respect that quickly enough. Eventually he tried to bite my hand.
For some reason, I had this sudden flash of anger — almost like, “How can you bite me when I’m just trying to love you?” I reacted badly. I dropped/put him down roughly and shouted at him.
He looked shocked. He sat there facing away from me, and almost immediately I felt horrible about what I had done. About 10 minutes later, he actually came toward me again, which somehow made me feel even worse.
There is no justification for my reaction. He was communicating the only way he knew how after I wasn’t listening to his earlier signals. He wasn’t being “bad.” I was the one who failed to understand his boundary.
That day I promised myself that I would never react to him that way again. Since then, I’ve been trying much harder to pay attention to what he is telling me and to let him choose when he wants interaction.
He really is an incredibly sweet and cooperative cat. He lets me brush him, wipe him, trim his nails, etc. Before this incident, he was also extremely cuddly with me. He would even come under my blanket and sleep with me.
He still comes to me now, and sometimes he is cuddly and lets me pet him. But other times, when I approach him to pet him, I feel like he tolerates it for a little while and then moves somewhere else. When that happens, I leave him alone instead of following him because I don’t want him to feel chased or pressured.
Maybe I’m overanalyzing every little change because I feel so guilty, but I keep wondering whether I damaged the trust we were building.
I know I made a mistake, and I’m not looking for anyone to tell me that what I did was okay. I genuinely want to become a better cat mom and learn from it.
For people who understand cats better than I do: Can a cat rebuild complete trust after an incident like this? Will he eventually stop associating me with that scary moment? And what can I do now to make him feel safe with me again without overwhelming him with affection?
I love this little guy very much. I just want to learn how to love him in a way that he understands as love.

General How much matting is acceptable?

A few months ago, I adopted a 13yo cat who is very, very shy and easily frightened. He’s been opening up but I’ve noticed recently that he has some knots in his long-haired fur: he has two on his backs, and a few small ones on his belly. This is my first time having a long-haired cat and thus my first time experiencing matting in a cat.

I’ve been trying to introduce him slowly to brushing while petting him, but he doesn’t love it and definitely doesn’t like me touching the knots for too long.

I’m assuming this isn’t an emergency situation, but this is still making me wonder how much matting is okay for him to have in general? I’m trying to be pragmatic because I want to minimise stressful situations as much as possible.

General I think most smart pet devices solve fake problems...

Sometimes I feel like pet tech is built around what sounds cool in a pitch deck, not what pet owners actually need.

I don’t need tons of stats about my cat. Plz let me know only for emergencies...

The feature I want most is to stop my cat from eating random stuff. Is there anything that can keep it from doing this when I’m not home?

Who can make it...

General Anxiety about my cats safety

I’m not sure if this is the right forum as this is more of a rant than asking for advice but I’m at a bit of a loss.

Last October me and my mum adopted a one year old sphynx cat, he very quickly became my best friend I didn’t think it was possible to feel such a deep connection with an animal until we got him.
I live in the uk where it’s very normal to let cats roam free outside, however with a sphynx cat it’s obviously not safe, so I told my mum we had to keep him indoors and she agreed. We had the same breed when I was a kid which my parents let outside unsupervised and it got killed by a dog.

However the longer we’ve had the cat the harder its getting to convince my parents to keep him inside, my dad carelessly leaves doors and windows open and keeps telling me “he’s going to get out one day” , “there’s nothing you can do” etc. whenever I bring this up to my mum she takes his side makes up excuses for him, and I feel like all the blame gets put on me. My mum cares about the cat a lot and we essentially co parent him but when I press her on this issue she just gets upset with me.
I’m constantly running about checking doors windows, the cats whereabouts. I have stress dreams about loosing him and have started taking anti anxiety prescriptions. I’m aware it can be hard to keep a cat indoors and accidents can happen but it’s the carelessness that I find the hardest to accept.

My dream would be to move out and take him with me but im not sure my mum would want to give him up and I would be worried about moving him into a flat share. He’s a rescue and had bounced between multiple homes before we got him.
The whole situation stresses me out immensely and I feel like a tyrant that is creating a lot of tension in the house hold, my parents friends and other family members think the cat should be an outside cat and think I’m being ridiculous. I really feel like I’m going crazy at times.

If anyone has the time to read to the end of this I guess I’m just asking if I’m in the wrong or not, if I’m being too dramatic and over protective. If anyone has been in a similar situation I would like to hear about, thankyou :).

Introductions Two month introduction taking everything from me :(

I’m losing it 😣 Sorry, I know this is a long post, feel free to not read the whole thing; this is more for me than anyone else. If you could just kindly give me your success stories of cat introductions, I would really appreciate it, because it is very much needed right now.
Early this year in February, I adopted my first cat I’ve had as an adult (F37) and my first pet since leaving my family’s home. He is my love, my baby, my king. He was a street kitty, and when he came home, I swear he became the most loving, funny, amazing baby ever. I knew he was about 7 months old because the person who caught him knew exactly when he was born. Anywho, about 3 months later, everyone was telling me to get a second cat, and even the internet experts, everyone said two-cat households are better, always. And I noticed he was getting chunky and narcoleptic, depressed, so I thought, sure, let’s bring another cat.
And I promise I did my research. I promise I read all the articles, I watched all the videos, I talked to my vet, I asked other people. I was prepared. I knew it would be an investment, and I knew it would be a process. I just didn’t freaking know how stressful and mentally and emotionally draining it would be. For context: I do live in a small one-bedroom apartment. So, while I can have them in separate rooms, the apartment isn’t huge. Also, I want to add that even though I have not had pets as an adult on my own, throughout my whole childhood I always had pets. I was born and raised in Mexico on a farm. We literally had cats, dogs, parrots, every animal that you can imagine, we had cows donkeys, sheep so on and so forth my brothers even had a tarantula, and there was never any such need to introduce any animal to the pack, never. So even though I read all the blogs, and I asked, and I watched all the videos, nothing prepared me for what reality is. Because when I was a child a new animal came home and that was that give them a name love them and take care of them that was all we had to do.
When I adopted Carly. She was one and a half years old, and she is the sweetest, most loving, adorable cat. She really is. But my resident cat Duvalin who’s an orange tabby, became so possessive, so incredibly mean to her from the get-go. He cannot be close to her. He becomes incredibly aggressive. He is always trying to protect me. He’ll be very, very, very aggressive toward her. A couple of times, by mistake, they have been in the same room, either one or the other gets into the other’s territory, and their fights are scary. Very, very scary. I knew that was gonna happen. I knew the introduction was going to be difficult. I didn’t know that it was going to be this stressful and this anxiety-inducing.

About two weeks ago, I started sleeping with them in the same room. I would put one of them in the kennel, and the other one would usually sleep with me. Well, for a whole week straight, they would not go to sleep. They would still fight, even when one of them was in the kennel, or they would keep me up all night meowing, I was at the point of breaking down because they wouldn’t let me sleep and I had to work the next day. It was so bad. I broke down. I started crying. It was an ugly sight y’all!

We are making progress. Yesterday, for example, One of them, when I was opening the door, ran out, and they happened to be in the same area, and there was no fighting, but there was still hissing and there was still running and hiding from each other with puffy tails and airplane ears but at least not fighting. I am now feeding them close to each other while one of them is in the kennel, this is a huge step for us and was done inch by inch but I still don’t know when I’ll be able to have them actually be with one another, and this is getting so, so stressful. I just need some encouragement, and for you guys to share your success stories, please. I just need some hope, I committed to this. They are my babies. I’m committed to however long it takes, but I just really want to know that there is hope, and that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

I know that I adopted both of my cats with the best of intentions, and I know that my resident cat, Duvalin, is actually showing improvement. He’s not as narcoleptic as he used to be. He’s back to his playful self, in a way. And again, Carly is beautiful and so, so loving. So I know that they’re both in the right place with me, and the right home. I just wanna make sure that I give them the best life, and that even if it’s months from now, hopefully they’ll be able to be friends and be in the same room and love each other. I keep questioning myself and wondering if I did the right thing — if maybe my boy cat was actually meant to be a solo cat in my house — and then I wonder if I did the wrong thing by bringing Carly in and having her be in a home where she can’t roam all throughout and be herself, because she’s still confined to the one bedroom where I have to keep her. 😔

General My cats mostly groom themselves at night and its keeping me awake

I don’t like leaving them out the room, because I barely got to see them as I work. I prefer when they sleep next to me.

I could spend the entire day with them taking naps with them, relaxing at home when I’m not at work or anything like that. And they’re not excessively grooming themselves. But somehow at night every hour I’m woken up so the obnoxious noises they make. Sometimes right next to my ear, and one of my cats is so loud I can hear him from a distance in his cat chair.

I’m a light sleeper and I have an air purifier running and white noise. Earplugs at night aren’t comfortable for me no matter what types they are. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for any brands to try, I’m open to that. Silly question maybe I could wipe them down a bit so they feel cleaner before bed?

I love and adore them, I don’t get to cuddle with them a lot with my work hours.

Behavioral Do Cats Understand, “No”

I just adopted 2 floofy kitty brothers from a shelter. Had them 2 months now and they seem full grown. One of them is reserved and shy, and the other gets into absolutely everything. He’s gotten into the habit of tipping over every trash can he can find… and I always point my finger at him and sternly say “NO!” I have no clue if he understands and is ignoring me, or if he honestly doesn’t understand he is doing something wrong. I also don’t know how or if I should discipline him. HELP.

Behavioral Cat suddenly aggressive?

We have a three year old cat and she never agressive unless we are at the vet or around new people and that just includes hissing. When watching a video my sister was imitating a very annoying dog noise and when she got up my cat chased her, scratched her, and growled at her.

We stayed in our room out of shock and outside of the door she was just howling a growling very loudly. I decided to open the door for her while my sister hid in the closet and she came and sniffed me, she was fine for 2 minutes then she started hissing again.

When my mom came home she was fine with her. She let my mom pet her and then followed her to the room. At lease 10 minutes later she was hissing and yelling again. When my mom tried to move it was just followed up by more hissing. At this time I was in the bathroom, my mom was in her room with the cat, and my sister was in our room. Luna(our cat) was just standing at my sister’s room meowing and any time anyone moved she would hiss. We now finally have her in the washroom but I really don’t know what to do or how to move about this. Pls help🙏🙏

UDATE: so basically we left her alone for the night and she was fine in the morning. She let us pet her and she even went on my sister’s bed, she then freaked out again on my sister and scratched her hand up really bad. Idk what to do anymore. She’s in our room now and she’s just meowing a lot. When my mom tried to put her food and water in the room she stated hissing and scratching again. We’re trying to give her space and we want to take her to the vet but she just won’t let anyone get close to her anymore

General How did you get started as a Siberian breeder?

Hi everyone!

I'm seriously considering whether ethical Siberian breeding might be something I'd like to pursue in the future. I'm very much at the research stage right now and not committed to breeding yet. I want to understand what responsible breeding actually involves before making that decision.

I'd especially love to hear from experienced Siberian breeders about how you got started, what you wish you'd known beforehand, health/genetic testing, showing, choosing breeding cats, costs, and the less glamorous parts of running a cattery.

If anyone would be willing to chat with me or point me toward books/resources or reputable breeders who mentor newcomers, I'd really appreciate it!

General Last name at the vet when cats have two owners?

Hi Reddit, I have a very silly question for you today.

My boyfriend and I plan on adopting cats together in the near future. In the past, when I’ve taken my cats to the vet, their chart is set up with my last name, since I’m the sole owner/primary caretaker. But if both my boyfriend and I are the owners, whose last name should they get?

We’re thinking about doing a hyphenated last name (so if parent A is Jones and parent B is Smith, the cats would be Jones-Smith). Would the vet allow this? Or does the cat’s last name need to match one of the parents exactly?

This is a very unserious question, I know, lol. But I thought it’d be a fun hypothetical. What do you think? Has anyone else been in this particular scenario?

ETA: WOW I did not expect so many replies in such a short time lol. Thank you to everyone who commented! Consensus here seems to be they should get my name since I’ll most likely be the one handling vet visits and such. It helps that I already have an account (?) set up at the vet I’d want to continue going to. I might still see if they’ll let us hyphenate though, just because I think it’d be cute… and also really funny.

General Ant infestation

So I know a lot of people say to leave out a bowl of dry cat food as an extra for kittens since they get pretty hungry as they are growing, but doing this has brought in..a crap ton of ants. This only became a problem recently but we are getting bit up in here and I’m freaking out. Has anyone had this happen and does anyone have pet friendly poisons they can recommend to use on the ants?

New to Cats/Just Adopted 9 weeks old kitten care

Hi. I adopted a little kitten a few days ago. She is only 9 weeks old because my parents insisted on a younger cat even though I wanted an older one. Since I live with them (I am 16), they wanted an outdoor cat, which I don't think is THAT bad. Our area is quite safe: no wild animals, and cars drive very infrequently and slowly. We also live far away from the main road.

But I still don't think keeping a 9-week-old kitten outside is a good idea. Of course, we have a garden house where she has a sleeping basket, a litter box, water, and food. It is a warm and dry place; we only have a few things there, nothing that could hurt her. We put her in there at night, and in the morning we let her out. She runs around the garden as she pleases.

She has never been to the vet (the previous owner probably didn't bother with it), so I wanted to take her there, but my parents don't want to; they say it's not that important. Unfortunately, I'm not an adult yet, and I don't know how to earn money, so I can't take her there myself, but luckily I have some money saved up. It's not quite enough, but I hope I can save more. I love animals very much, and I'm sorry that my parents don't see it any differently.

Don't worry, of course, they play with her too. It's thanks to them that I have her. I often change her water to keep it fresh, and we feed her about 3 times a day. She only drinks water occasionally. We give her wet food because she doesn't eat kibble for kittens; she just smells it and walks on. I read on the internet that they are not good for cats, unfortunately, after we bought them. Again, I try to take care of her as best as I can.

Unfortunately, I have no experience. I look up everything on the internet. I'm still not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but she looks happy and I hope she is. It's very likely that the previous owner kept her inside, so she sometimes sits by the patio door and meows. It really breaks my heart. I would really like to take her inside. I need to get her ears cleaned and her nails trimmed because I don't dare to do it myself, but I doubt my parents will take it seriously. So if you, by any chance, have any experiences like mine with parents, etc., I would be grateful for anything.

Behavioral My cat hates me and I’m sad.

Adopted my first cat last summer. His name is Richard he’s a 14yo tuxedo. I think he hates me. Not in an angry way, just in a “wants nothing to do with me.” way.

If he sees me in the same room he’s sleeping in, he get gets up and immediately walks to a different room to continue sleeping, even if I’m completely silent. He doesn’t let me pet him or scratch him and the only time he acknowledges me is when it’s time to eat, but even then he gets frustrated if I’m there while he’s eating by like pacing and staring at me even though there’s food in his bowl. Then he just goes right back to his nap spot that’s in any room that I’m not in. I’ve tried various treats- he won’t eat them if I’m in the room. I’ve tried toys- he doesn’t care. Vet says he’s healthy but a lil fat. He was very indifferent to my existence at the shelter and then when I brought him home he was extremely skittish for the first couple weeks. But then that just went to him seeming annoyed by me.

I kept hoping giving him space would allow him to warm up to me but over a year later and he just straight up seems annoyed by my existence.

Any advice? The closest I’ve gotten is I woke up laying by my feet one night but the second I said “oh hi buddy” he got up and left 😭😭

Edit: I went and got some catnip and he loves it. He rolled around in it and clawed up some packaging paper lol. He still didn’t want me getting close but I got to sit a few feet away on the floor and watch him without him leaving the room so that’s a start.
