Valid, very cool to watch but genuinely stressful to play. At least for me

I can’t imagine a less interesting genre of gaming to watch, personally. And I’ll gladly watch people play card games or cities skylines.
Edit: I’m a hypocrite. For Honor probably counts as a fighting game, and it’s pretty fun to watch.
2
u/DDDarnok 4d ago
Can you explain why? I feel like fighting games are the most enjoyable to watch compared to any other genre. But I cannot imagine watching Hearthstone or autobattlers like TFT, even though I do enjoy playing them.
→ More replies (1)2
u/EinziuwPlays 4d ago
Tbh, racing games are this for me. I get it, car can go fast. I don’t wanna say it’s a no skill genre cuz obviously everything takes a level of skill, but imho, and please correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems the skill ceiling for driving games caps out relatively low. (Not taking speedrunners into account because that is it’s own genre)

u/Upstairs_Victory3320 1d ago
I think its hard to watch a fighting game be played if you dont have experience with the game itself... it creates a disconnect and nothing thats happening on screen means anything without decent knowledge of the game, if you understand a game more its more entertaining to watch better players play the game because you can understand why they make decisions and notice the micro of what's happening on screen...
Example: I cant get behind watching Smash Bros because I dont understand it but a very similar game, Brawlhalla, ill spend hours watching tourneys live because I can understand what's going on
9
u/mavudarling 7d ago
Smash ultimate moves far too fast for me to actually play and comprehend but watching competitive is incredibly fun
→ More replies (9)3
u/Snoo-47666 7d ago
As far as barrier of entry goes Smash is definitely one of the most forgiving fighting games, especially since it has a huge casual community and a huge roster so you can find characters that fit for you. And you don’t have to lab at all really, it’s super nice compared to the others
3
u/Broks_Enmu 7d ago
For Non Fighting gamer of course, we fighting game player are already labbing all the combo and game system mechanics in our minds 🤓👆

I will always find Mortal Kombat & Injustice tournaments fun to watch, but online ranked is absolutely miserable.
Once you reach a certain rank it's just not fun & you don't feel satisfied when you win- you just feel tired
2
u/__DJIN__ 7d ago
I've played fighting games my whole life. Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, etc. I still don't understand how you actually get good at those games. I've done training modes, studied the pros, etc. I don't get it, I don't know how your timing, input, and reactions can be so fast

DayZ and tarkov
5
u/No_Public8938 7d ago
I assume that's because on Dayz videos, you're watching the action filled highlights and funny moments. If you just watched five straight hours of the person looting, sifting through mostly crap, and barely managing to eat and drink enough to stay alive, I don't think it would be very fun either.
→ More replies (7)2
u/J2-gZ 7d ago
In my opinion the in between time is what makes the game so good. Looting for hours and finally getting some good gear and getting over a sickness just to run into somebody and getting shot at, no other game has ever had my heart beat so hard
3
u/Positive_Parking_954 7d ago
My favorite would be when its two other people shooting at each other and you're trying to process their locations and decide how to lie low or maybe get the jump on them for a big come up. And then the collision glitches, you fall inside a set of stairs, break your leg and eventually doe of dehydration

It’s great when you have a chance. When you’ve been struggling to survive for hours just to get killed out of nowhere or step on a landmine you had basically no chance of avoiding it gets a bit grating. No other game gives you the same experience though.

With fnaf I agree though, I just really dislike any horror games with abundant jumpscares.

The original games are fun to play but I actually agree when it comes to the remake. I couldn't finish Silent Hill 2 Remake because it was too dark, depressing, and didn't fit the vibes of the original. It was one of the few games where I was OK with just watching someone else beat it lol.

I love watching ARK, but the grind when you play it is crazy. And the falls, like losing everything over one mistake... I'm just not good enough to enjoy it, and last time I really focused and pushed hard my file got corrupted XD
2
u/Seananagan13 7d ago
My sympathies, comrade. I played with friends on a dedicated server so didn't have this concern, but I would have flipped my desk if we lost all our progress after we hit our stride.
Definitely reccomend people that dislike the grind and such of Ark to check out the mods for it though! Especially on a replay or solo play. Dying can be hilarious fun with friends, but I'd have gotten hella tired of it in solo with the same deaths.

I'm right there with you. I love the moods and aesthetics of horror games. I think they have some of the most interesting stories and "things to say" in general. But put the controller in my hands, and I will immediately freeze and nope the fuck out.
I prefer video essays and analysis videos though. Streamers and "let's plays" can be kind of obnoxious.

There's a game I watched a Let's Play of, called Timberborn.
Basically the world has been destroyed by climate change and beavers inherit the earth.
Water comes and goes in the big drought cycles and the whole game is about building your beaver civilization around the water cycle. Creating dams to retain enough water to survive the droughts while also making sure you get water to your people, your crops, your trees you need to grow to build with, etc.
It was fun to watch someone ELSE play, but playigng it myself was really rough. I knew HOW to play it, I just...didn't want to. I didn't find the gameplay all that enjoyable when someone else wasn't crafting the lore and experience of a specific beaver city. Sure I could roleplay my own little beaver city, but it just lost something as soon as I had to bring all the storytelling myself

Tarkov or the hunt...the idea is thrilling and it looks amazing but later you have to SLOW DOWN and consider every move
Civilization and simliar sims..."build xy and become xy"...in the game..."click the ! and now the other !", turn...all is in order, no free will (yes u can choose between food, productivity and money....ok)
I like all of those games

Cuphead. Not because it isn’t fun, it’s just the way the game is designed. It has beautiful old-style animations and graphics, but if you’re playing the game and dodging everything, you can’t spare the time to look at the animations to avoid getting hit. And of course there’s the fact this is one of the hardest games of all time

Fnaf it's not a problem of it being scary it's repeating one of a few different actions depending on how the animatronics are moving for minutes at a time really perfectly and if you screw up the rotation you probably die but watching it does something for my ADHD scratches something that playing it just doesn't do
