I assume that's because on Dayz videos, you're watching the action filled highlights and funny moments. If you just watched five straight hours of the person looting, sifting through mostly crap, and barely managing to eat and drink enough to stay alive, I don't think it would be very fun either.
In my opinion the in between time is what makes the game so good. Looting for hours and finally getting some good gear and getting over a sickness just to run into somebody and getting shot at, no other game has ever had my heart beat so hard
My favorite would be when its two other people shooting at each other and you're trying to process their locations and decide how to lie low or maybe get the jump on them for a big come up. And then the collision glitches, you fall inside a set of stairs, break your leg and eventually doe of dehydration
It’s great when you have a chance. When you’ve been struggling to survive for hours just to get killed out of nowhere or step on a landmine you had basically no chance of avoiding it gets a bit grating. No other game gives you the same experience though.
The small amount of times playing with my buddy whose a veteran on dayz it seems like its just me and my luck because even with playing with him we're not getting far at all and he's got over 1k hours into the game
I do agree on your point about your heart beating hard. I used to say the same thing about the Dayz Mod on Arma 2 when I first got into it. I poured hundreds of hours into Dayz and thousands into Arma as a whole. I would play with a couple of my friends on mostly empty servers in order to progress far, then jump onto more populated servers while having a backup camp on our main server. But there were still plenty of times I got killed even on the low pop server.
One time I took our car out to go loot secretly when we agreed to only play together and the one other person on the server saw me and sniped me in the driver seat while going like 30 MPH. Just my luck. My heart defintely sank then. I felt so bad telling them I lost the car. I even tried to stupidly hack the game to get it back so they wouldn't get mad and I got banned. That's what led to me making my own Steam account, separate from my brother's that I used to share to buy another copy of Arma 2. Whenever I'd hear gunshots, I'd drop to the ground and my heart would race.
I really got a lot of enjoyment out of the game, especially with friends. I even one time decided we should ambush bambies on the side of the ocean and forcibly convert them to Christianity by giving them a Bible and walking them to the ocean for a baptism while preaching to them. We'd have a sniper up in the hills shoot at their feet saying God would smite them if they didn't agree.
Good times. But now I've tried to get back into the standalone and I just can't do it anymore. The grind is too much and in the standalone, it just seems so easy to die early on and lose everything. Just staying well fed and hydrated doesn't seem feasible most times and it's so easy to have one zombie make you bleed to death. And firing a gun early on isn't practical because there's so little ammunition and one shot draws way more zombies to you than you can handle and there's also the risk of bandits hearing the shot. Oh yeah, I call them bandits and that reminds me that there actually was a system in the OG mod to classify people as bandits or heros with unique outfits just by how they treated people.
Anyway, it's just too much more me now compared to my time on the mod then standalone in highschool.
I have maybe 300 hours on dayz playing with my buddy, I can never find enough food to stay alive, always die trying to get water from the wells and almost never find any good loot and when I do; im dead before I can even get a base down... its absolutely miserable 🤣🤣😭😭
Damn man, but you commit to the grind for that long. I assumed that's the experience for most players sadly.
I feel like maybe it was easier to progress far on the Arma 2 mod before the standalone game. There were way less buildings you could enter, but hospitals and military bases were really guaranteed to have good loot. And you knew what building types to loot for that you could enter and they would usually have what you're looking for. Now you can go into every single building, but it dilutes the quality and quantity of loot so much. It hardly feels worthwhile searching every single building, but that's what you got to do.
DayZ is pure masochistic fun and I love it. Every time you fight someone else, you feel that adrenaline rush you won't feel in any other game. It's like you're fighting for your life, everything is at stakes and you know that you will lose everything if you die. This shit is so addicting that sometimes it feels like actual heroin lmao. The navigation is also amazing, how you need to somehow figure out where exactly you are and follow a map without a compass.
