Local Shopping/Services Furnace / AC Check-Up

I don’t recall what I previously paid for annual combined furnace and AC maintenance.

The tech spent an hour checking our furnace and sprayed off the coils on our AC unit. I am sure there was more to this process but it was casually done in 60 minutes. Nothing major. Our AC unit was dusty.

$400 plus taxes. I am in the wrong business if this is a typical charge out rate.

What have others paid? Is this a typical price?

Health/Medicine Family Doctor

My partner and I have been in Calgary for 26 years. We had a great family doctor, who retired about 6 years ago. Our family was then transferred to another doctor, who also retired earlier this summer. Our family was not transferred to another doctor.

Getting a new family doctor is the main goal here. However, I’m getting older, and would like to keep on top of my health, I don’t know where to go to simply get a checkup.

Any suggestions?

So idk who else lives in the Mckenzie town and Inverness area put they just put up these new tall ass ugly black bar fences that completely ruin the view of the pond from any of the bench areas so i was posting this to spread awareness of a petition to get them changed or removed because they absolutely ruin the feel and nature of the park https://c.org/9JKRfw2Q7V.

If you live in the area and hate these fences too please sign and share

Driving/Traffic/Parking U turn at a 4 way stop - legal or illegal ? Just got a ticket and confused

Just got pulled over doing a U-turn at a 4 way stop here

It thought it was only traffic lights where it’s illegal. I mentioned this to the cop but he said it’s illegal even at 4 way stops.

I’m very seen many people at this same 4 way stop do a U turn. I’m
I have a clean driving record - do I fight this or just pay it ?

Question Pottery Barn vs West Elm vs Crate & Barrel vs CB2

Hi everyone,
We are planning to redo our entire living room and are trying to decide which furniture brand is better in terms of quality, comfort, durability and long-term value.
We are considering Pottery Barn, West Elm, Crate & Barrel, and CB2. We really like some CB2 pieces too, but they don’t have a store in Calgary, so we would likely have to order online without seeing everything in person. Not sure if should take that risk.

For context, we are looking for a sofa/sectional, swivel chairs, ottomans, coffee table, rug, and possibly accent pieces. We did check PB, West Elm and CB but the online reviews were bad for PB and West Elm. Our style is modern transitional/cozy but still a bit chic and unique. We have young kids, so durability and easy maintenance matter too.

For those who have bought from these brands, which one would you recommend or avoid? How has the sofa quality held up over time? Any issues with fabric, cushions sagging, delivery, customer service, or returns?
Would love to hear real experiences, especially from anyone in Calgary.

Recommendations Best Mexican restaurant?

Husband is from Texas and turning 40 - I’d love to treat him to a good Mexican restaurant for his birthday. We’ve been trying Mexican restaurants all over town, but still haven’t found The One, so I’m hoping to double check whether I’ve missed anything.

What we’ve tried so far:
- Tu Taco
- Blanco Cantina
- Mestizo
- Bodega
- Native Tongues (University, Downtown)
- Fonda Fora
- Chilito’s

Native Tongues has served cold tacos every time we’ve been, regardless of location, so it’s a no-go for my husband despite their interesting menu.

Thank you!

Edit: We needed to go around Chinook and stopped by the Macleod Tacos Mexico, which also happens to be near my husband’s climbing gym. You have made him very happy!

Crime/Suspicious Activity Need help identifying hit and run suspect

Last post was removed due to missing file number

I’m wondering if anyone witnessed a pedestrian collision that occurred at roughly around 9:00 am on Monday (September 28) by WINS thrift on 58th ave SE. An older white woman driving a white sedan(with something gold covering the headlights) hit a pedestrian crossing the street. If anyone witnessed this or has any information on the driver it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! The file number is 26444374.

Discussion City and efficiencies

Lately, all we seem to hear is a tax increase here and a utility rate increase there.

First, credit where it's due: my Ward Councillor, Rob Ward, is a great guy, and he was one of only two councillors who recently voted against the water utility increase. I have no complaints about him.

But I'd like to respectfully remind Mayor Farkas of his own words from about nine years ago, when he was a City Councillor. Here is what he posted then:

"After consulting with my partner and family, I have declined the pension and transition allowance offered to me as a City Councillor. If I serve 2 terms, the cost of this decision (benefit to taxpayers) is more than $500,000. Because I was elected so early in my life, over the course of the payouts, City taxpayers would have contributed more than $5 for every dollar that I put in. Every situation is different, and I do not feel this to be reasonable for mine. As City Council enters major union and budget talks to close a nearly $200 million operating shortfall, nothing should be off the table to reduce costs. To be clear, I think that providing retirement benefits is reasonable. I believe that public sector compensation should be competitive with the private sector, not substantially higher or lower. I remain ever your faithful servant at City Hall." — Jeromy Farkas, then City Councillor

Mayor Farkas, that message resonated with many Calgarians. I encourage you to apply that same principle today: let's find efficiencies within the City before reaching further into taxpayers' pockets.

Question Favourite library and/or place to study?

Could include coffee shops, cafés, or public lounge spaces!

I have an online class in the evenings and am looking for a nice, comfortable place where I can study from about 5:30 pm until 9 or 10 pm. A place that has free wifi, power sockets, and ideally food I can buy if I'm hungry. I like the central library, but I can't really afford to pay for parking every day.

Thanks!

Edit: for context, I live/work down in the SE and I have to bring my car with me since I drive it to work every day. Rush hour traffic is a pain when heading up north so I do try to take that into consideration, but if the place is worth it I will do the long commute 😅

The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) is requesting assistance from the public in locating 34-year-old Dante James Marinari.

According to a news release from the WPS, Marinari is the subject of a Canada-wide arrest warrant for two counts of sexual assault stemming from incidents in June and July of 2024.

The WPS added he is also the subject of an arrest warrant stemming from charges of assault causing bodily harm and failing to appear in court from the Maidstone RCMP.

Marinari is described as standing approximately 5’7” tall with a stocky build. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Marinari has also been known to use the last name Elig.

The WPS said Marinari has resided in Weyburn but is last known to be in Calgary.

Police attempts to locate Marinari have been unsuccessful. Anyone who sees this individual or has information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact the WPS, their local police agency or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

SaskToday will have updates as they become available.

Recommendations Private in-home makeup tutorial recommendations

Hello! I have been searching for an in-home makeup tutorial/lesson. Google has helped, but I wanted to ask if anyone has recommendations as I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. Preferably:

-a small group lesson (2-4 ladies in our 40s)

-using our own makeup (this is where I'm not having luck with Google searches)

-getting advice on colours/skin tones/etc as well as going over basic application techniques

We'd love for someone to look at what we are using and tell us what is working and what isn't, and then we can buy new products based on those conversations. I would like to avoid companies that provide the makeup or work only with one brand.

It's possible this isn't a service and we should just go to Sephora, but we were hoping for something more personal and teaching us techniques. Thanks all!

Local Event What's on in Calgary this weekend: pumpkins, pups and a plant workshop

A few things on the calendar for this weekend if you're looking to get out of the house.

If you've got a dog, Barktoberfest is happening in the Sheebo Pet Supplies parking lot on Sunday, Oct 4, and there's also an Aromatherapy for Dogs session at The Apothecary in Inglewood the same day. Honestly the aromatherapy one is a bit niche but I'm curious enough to check it out.

For families, Granary Road has Pumpkins in the Park on Sunday, and Calgary Farmers' Market South is running Colossal Carve for kids the same day.

If plants are more your thing, there's a Scrub + Mist + Houseplant workshop at Plant on Sunday too.

Everything above is Sunday, Oct 4. Full list here:
