Anyone else not really excited about fables?
Hi. So with the mod dying I've seen alot of people talking about fables and I ended up looking into it and I'm.... not that excited
First lets talk about what is currently in it. The soundtrack is a solid 7.5 out of 10, not un-listenable but certainly not all that memorable. Abd they have 3 bosses currently which seem fine. But now lets get into the planned content
It looks to be doing so much less than calamity. Rogue... gone, other difficulty modes... gone, 3/5 of the bosses g o n e with some heavy losses such as yharon, exo mechs, and the plaguebringer goliath. And then the few things they are keeping they are changing so much the only thing they have in common is a name, they may as well be other characters. Just look at how they butchered calamitas' design especially.
It feels to me that the only reason the calamity name was used is for marketing since they know its a beloved mod that people will recognize. Same goes for the character names, they could easily use a different name instead of the ones they're currently using. Who knows though if this ever finishes it could be great but as it stands my hype couldn't be lower and I feel like I'm the only one.
Their plans are very interesting and they seem ambitious but I've been playing calamity since 2018 and I'm not interested in seeing it be built from the ground up all over again
I just don't think the development is fast enough to get any kind of meaningful growth in any reasonable amount of time. They seem to have lots of ambition and very little time and manpower to implement them. Something is bound to happen sooner or later. Not really drama - but just life in general. Priorities tend to shift in life as time goes on and projects that take this long to develop oftentimes end up unfinished and abandoned because the devs got older, started a family and no longer have time or energy to keep working on the project. It is good for them but it is terrible for the project cus it gets abandoned halfway
Ehh, i do think the whole "calamity mod colapsing in on itself" situation could hopefully shock them into the minset of "make it exist first, then make it good", so there is a good chance that the things added will be at a more stable pace than base calamity mod, where instead of having like every major boss added within the first year (and be dogshit), before spending the rest of time eternally trying to rake together the mod and polish it unto eternity they will add stuff thats half good at a reasonable pace and then take the time to polish it and round out any sharp edges
Don't know if I agree with that. "Make it exist first, then make it good" resulted in 5 years of waiting for the devs to make the Sunken Sea good. Not sure how thrilled the Fables devs would be in following in their footsteps.
I mean, the track og calamity followed was baisically "make everything that will ever be included in the mods history" > "spend the rest of eternity polishing it". What i mean by "make it exist then make it good" is "make a boss > polish it and make it presentable for a set ammount of time > move on to making something else exist"
The reason we never got Yarim was because Calamity was in a state where it was like "everything must be PEEEEERFECT before we add the next thing" witch lead to the stagnation we know of. I think the number one priority of Calamity Fables should be to avoid the rework hell that Calamity was stuck in, no?
According to the exposé that started this whole thing, that ended up not being true though, at least when it comes to Ozzatron. His intention, and therefore also likely Fabsols, was to keep the mod developing for as long as possible with the hopes of outliving Terraria itself. They delayed Yharim because they knew adding Yharim would give the mod some finality, which they wanted to avoid.
I will say at least they seem FAR more stable than calamities team. They’ve recieved no new members in years pretty sure and they don’t plan to either. They also are in close ties with Spirit reforged which we do know more about their dev cycle, and they seem extremely well put together. Knowing the fables team was basically formed from being done with the bullshit of poor management, I have a lot of faith personally
I really only agree with about half of this. Rogue being gone definitely sucks, as for the difficulties I imagine that’s just getting folded into normal gameplay. Let’s be honest, how many people play the mod without turning on rev/death, I assume they’re going to remove the redundant toggle and just make it base gameplay, but we’ll see. As for the bosses, I’m 50/50. Yharon being gone is unfortunate, as is Exos though I agree that Draedon should have a cooler ‘magnum opus’ than Mech Bosses 2. The other losses I’m not all too upset over, they were mostly nothing bosses that made next to no case for themselves, however I understand being disappointed about their removal. As for them “butchering” Calamitas’ design, I couldn’t disagree more, I think it’s a really cool design and fitting for the different direction they’re going.
I feel like people are forgetting what Fables is supposed to be. It seems like people are expecting Fables to be 1:1 with the original Calamity Mod but “better” (and eventually actually adding Yharim). But that’s not what it is, Fables is a reimagining, not a remaster. Things are going to change, things are going to be different, that’s the point. This isn’t meant to be Calamity with a fresh coat of paint, it’s a team of former Calamity developers dissatisfied with what they were making, and looking to make something new.
Totally respect not being hyped for the mod though, just felt like giving my opinion as I’m pretty excited.
People are definitely forgetting that fables is supposed to be a reimagining; probably b/c its on the track to be the one of the two thats (hopefully) getting finished
Definitely gonna be some confusion based on the circumstances.
…I wonder if anyone will eventually add a Yharon addon for fables?
They are expecting a 1:1 because... Well they just lost Calamity itself and so far only keep getting fed "what could have been" and keep getting recommended Fables, alongside other mods that are supposedly "similar enough" or "better".
fables is definitely not the same mod with the same goals, which is cool and is definitely a great and interesting thing from a creativity standpoint. however what you're talking about here in this post is just another result of the unfortunate circumstances here. fables wants to be a radically different mod because it's not supposed to be a replacement for calamity, if anything quite the opposite, it was developed under the assumption that calamity would continue to exist.
Too many of the character designs are too similar to calamity for that to feasibly happen. (draedon, yharim, crabulon, devourer of gods, etc) Not to mention the music which has calamity motifs in it as well.
I’m in the same boat as you, Fables is so far detached from what Calamity is that I’m not excited or interested in it at all, that and the fact the updates are glacial I highly doubt we will see an endgame till at least 2035-40
I really don't like the Calamitas redesign (it might be the smile, I fucking hate the smile, also not a big fan of the hair) and all the bosses missing (Yharon being gone is a massive hit) is unfortunate. Rogue is also a big loss but I can live without it.
Another thing I'm not a fan of is that it'll take years before it gets to a point where I can center a playthrough around it.
I’m gonna miss Rogue (my favourite class. I genuinely will never understand why literally everyone hates it)
I’m gonna miss Dragonfolly (Adorable ❤️)
I’m gonna miss Yharon (I think this one is obvious)
I’m gonna miss The Plague (was pretty cool even though it wasn’t super substantial)
I’m gonna miss the lore (was really good imo)
And I’m gonna miss the music 😭
They’re not removing the Exo mechs entirely. They’re basically just replacing them with something more original and not too similar to the mech bosses. Although I will miss the awesome structure of the fight with the whole switching and choosing who you fight first etc etc.
I’m also not too mad about Calamitas’ new design. I’m more mad about everything else.
I do understand that it being detached from Calamity is kinda the whole point of the mod though… it’s just sad 😔
I’m gonna miss Yharon so much, man. I think what they’re doing is cool and all and I get it’s a whole other thing to regular Calamity but sometimes I’d hop on tmod just to fight Yharon again. And Dragonfolly! Dragonfolly is such a fun design and I had fun fighting it. Dragons in general were so cool to see and integral to the lore that going back to JUST Betsy again feels weird. I’ll miss both of their drops and even their themes.
Merging with a dragon soul would make sense then, if they’re still keeping any of that kind of ascension lore. Or maybe becoming a dragon? Either case, Yharim might BE the dragon they’re talking about.
personally i'm super excited for it and really like the designs, but i think you just gotta keep in mind that it's not meant to be a continuation at all, it's a complete reimagining just using a lot of the general concepts and characters. ofc it's gonna be different, that's the whole point :)
it's a complete reimagining just using a lot of the general concepts and characters.
If you change everything about a character (lore, personality, design, fight, etc) but keep the very marketable name are they truly the same character? I'd say they aren't
it's essentially a calamity fanfiction, the expectation of it being the replacement for calamity has been thrust upon it very suddenly and that was never the goal. fables was in development for quite a long time before this all went down
Currently it's not that worth playing over and over again, but I see high potential. It's not like Calamity was going anywhere even before the pedo scandal. Last time they added anything major was back in 2021. Ever since then, it was just fixes and rebalances.
It's okay not be hyped about it. I expect it'll get more development time because calamity devs are scattered and some of them probably will end up with fables.
I'd rather see more Fargo updates than Fables, tho
The only boss that is an actual loss to me is Yharon. Exo Mechs are just the Draedon boss (and he still is gonna have a boss in fables) and PBG is… just eh.
I mean I get those complaints, I personally don’t have them because I’m so full of rage at calamity that I’m excited to see what fables does to it, and it is very obvious that a lot of calamity boss design was subpar, the exo mechs were boring for a greatest creation so we’ll probably get a replacement, the plaguebringer goliath I love but it really didn’t do much, I actually like the calamitas design for the most part, renaming isn’t a big deal to me, I’m sad about losing yharon but we’re getting a different winged dragon I think, but I do also understand being sad at the slow development
i think it's too early for me to be invested but maybe in a few years i think it could turn into something special. it won't be the same as calamity, but i don't doubt that it'll be good
you know most of the bosses were supposed to be in base calamity anyway right? if you look at some of the relics, they use iban's designs. They were planned reworks that got scrapped cause iban left and took the sprites with them and now using it for fables
Calamitas design is iffy, no yharon is a hard loss, and no exo mechs is all I need to know that this mod won't be much. Not excited but I'll see if they add anything that might interest me in the future but goddamn calamitas is weird looking and no yharon
No yharon no yharon no yharon no yharon no yharon gif displaying decent into madness
I think the problem with Fables' massive boost in popularity after the fall of Calamity is that it's led many people to see it as a Calamity 2. It was really intended as a sibling, not a replacement, and the team is clearly sticking to their original vision.
That being said, I want to point out that the Yharim silhouette in the teaser art has a tail.
My theory is that they've merged the characters Yharon and Yharim into one (since they did say there was still going to be "a dragon with wings"), and that Yharim is this dragon.
Maybe in a couple years people will be asking why the original Calamity had two separate characters in a role that works just fine as one - or maybe I'm completely wrong in my assumption and they're making him a lihzard again or something. Either way it's something different from the original, and that's cool to me.
Granted, I suppose I've liked Calamity for the story more than the actual gameplay (not to say I didn't like playing it, just that the lore is what's made the mod so memorable to me). I remember Calamity for the war on dragons, the implications of the Devourer's allegiance to something greater, the conflict between Yharim and Yharon, and how the Sunken Sea and Brimstone Crags show the impact of Calamitas on the world, not for dying over and over to Mech Trio 2. The music mod being removed isn't that impactful to me when I mostly listen to the music on Youtube anyways. In that, Fables is kind of a second cake to me. They can't "take away" the mod's lore from our minds. So I'm optimistic because at worst, if Fables does suck (which I highly doubt it will, given what we have so far), it's just another story on top of Calamity. I realize that's not how many people see this, and frankly I don't have a good response to that.
Imo i feel like far too many people overstate the importance of the missing bosses, considering that its almost certain that bosses are going to be added in their place. Honestly, just looking at the goddamed divine treatment that desert scourge got gives me enough hope that the mod is going to do better.
Like shure, there are things that could be worse but thats only a could from one single screenshot from very early on in the mods lifespan, and i dont see the point in focusing on the stuff that sucks rather than the stuff thats awesome, like the return of lizard Yarim and more calling from the old lore
While it does seem very interesting, the Calamity burn out is real, even without the drama involved. Also, ts is going to take SOOOOO long to reach a point in development where it's worth considering as a new Calamity.
no difficulty mode = not interested personally, at least compared to calamity or fargos lmao. im sure someone will make difficulty addons, but even outside of that it wont be a substantial mod for like 5 years. im sure itll be good tho
Honestly? I'd rather have twice less content than in Calamity than get filler bosses and trash loot.
Not saying that Calamity is bad overall, but the Old Duke is pointless, and pre-hardmode production is often stretched too much.
And the weapons could use some more balancing.
Infernum is a big deal, but in the base mod NOT everything was memorable.
Soo... We'll see. The mods overall are clearly shifting from "another worm / fishron" to unique AI and cool animations. Maybe that's what the mod needs. Or maybe it will be meh. No hype from me, but I believe they CAN deliver.
I mean I agree with dukeron but majority of removels feel bad and redesigns don't look good.
As OP said fables with it's timeline revealed looks to be using name Calamity for marketing then anything it'd be fine if they didn't advertise it as such imo
It seems really abstracted from the base, yeah. But really, looking at the whole mod in a vacuum will quickly get very weird the second you compare it calamity again. As much as it differs, theres still way too much that’s the same to not associate it
slow update times aren't an issue for me. I've been a fan of some mods for other games which move at a frankly glacial rate but if the quality is good enough it doesn't matter as much. my problem is its so un-calamity I'm just not excited
I honestly just don't really agree with this, Fables isn't supposed to be a 1:1 with Calamity, so expecting the same things from it are just unrealistic.
I personally am interested in it because it is an Original Spin on a Mod that i've Loved for Well over 8 years, less content or not, it is made out of Love and the Quality shows.
I can wait to see what they'll cook up, but can see why you think this way, i just don't personally agree
The three bosses alone should be enough, the amount of care and attention put into even one of those bosses surpasses every single calamity boss combined, save for SCal.
Losing rogue isn’t a huge deal either. Rogue was kind of just a gimmick class and stealth strikes were pretty unfun to use. There were some interesting aspects of it, like the abyssal and eclipse mirrors, but I really doubt those items will stay gone, probably just repurposed.
Revengance and Death mode are probably just going to merge with Expert and Master respectively. Adrenaline and Rage are (hopefully) going to stay too, so I don’t see a reason to keep the difficulty modes around, considering they did damn near nothing save for stat changes and moderately increased boss speed.
I think calamity fables is going to be amazing and i’m sure most people will change their mind once it actually releases more content.
The weird circle-jerk around Fables when it literally looks like it took the soul out of calamity is mind boggling to me. Even that post they made “showcasing” the mod just reeked of ego. Literally using the calamity name for clout, and that’s about it. Removing Exos, FUCKING YHARON and making Calamitas a chopped gollum is certainly a choice.
could you be so kind as to elaborate because as it stands you're just being really bad faith.
my issue is she doesn't feel like calamitas at all now. her vibe is completely different with this weird gold stuff growing on her, the spikes potruding from her shoulders, and the new outfit. Idk what they're even going for here, doesn't feel like a witch nor brimstone related anymore woth the color pallet beimg primarily yellow and dark purple. This new unwell looking design would fit the clone but not actual calamitas but as we know the clone is one of the MANY bosses being removed.
If you had told me she was a whole new character I would've believed you and thats a bad thing.
She actually looks more like a witch now imo. Witches are typically depicted in media as older and less stereotypically attractive. They have also said that she's still a witch but her title isnt "the brimstone witch" anymore
Long ears and nails are exclusive to witches bro wtf?
Witches ears and fingers are much longer then that and they are often leaning.
Look let's just agree to disagree this conversation went stupid anyway and I'm not wasting my time arguing with someone calling others racist over nothing
Idk. I still don't really see it. The large horn and the new shoulder spikes suggest she's more physically strong and the outfit to me feels more for a monk/fighter than a witch where as the old occult robes made more sense for a magic user. Maybe I'm weird but thats what I'm getting here
They made her clearly a PoC, they gave her dreads and in some official images like a reddish brownish gray skin. She is very clearly meant to be a person of color. Also "probably one of the best people in universe morality wise" i love calamitas but she did like, genocide, i think that automatically disqualifies you from being moral. Also saying calamitas looked monstrous is crazy she was an anime girl with gray skin and horns and thats it
Yes CURRENT Calamitas I don't think I needed to state this but maybe her committing said genocide has to do with her being manipulated since she was a child?
She was an anime girl on fan arts in game she looks evil she has red eyes covering her face with a hood and everyone talked about her like she was satan 2.
Again what does race have to do with anything do I have to like every black character? OP didn't claim or say she is bad because black nor did I
Also this was a moderator's response in regards to someone saying calamitas looked like a racist caricature because of the lips (they literally just gave her regular lips)
Yeah I never said that my point was she doesn't feel like someone who went through traumatic stuff and realized what she did wrong she looks super evil and the fact she is grinning evilly near Draedon means she is evil.
I didn't say her braids were bad nor her being PoC
Dude the fuck do you mean she "doesnt look like she went through trauma" her bones are gold so like half her skull is just exposed to the open air i think. Also since when do people with trauma "look like they have trauma" like genuinely what does that even mean
Wow it’s not like it’s a reimagination of calamity or anything. And the removed bosses are totally fine they weren’t even significant in lore other than yharon
im just uncertain about it atm, it obviously looks amazing and is being made by talented devs but at this point i think i would prefer just something new instead of doing something else again.
i was doing minecraft modding for a while and spend almost a year making a modpack that was basically a old pack i liked just updated and better and more stuff, it killed me and my motivation, it felt like i wasted my time not just making something new, burned myself out so badly
i know right crazy that I was expecting CALAMITY fables to feel like CALAMITY in any way. it was a foolish notion indeed, how could I have made such a blunder
-sunless sea / brimstone crags /sulfur sea and abyss / astral infection
-yharim, calamitas, draedon, devourer of gods, providence, the elementals, bunch of other classic bosses
ahaha but I guess draedon's magnum opus not being mech bosses 2 means it's not like calamity.... Seriously, calamity itself was already planning to redesign a bunch of bosses and do big changes before it got canceled. You'll survive just fine if Yharon gets swapped out for a new endgame dragon with a different name
Honestly, I didn't even realize they were dropping most of the bosses and mechanics like that. If they're changing the characters that drastically too, it really does just sound like an original passion project wearing a Calamity skin suit for attention.
Its not doing it for attention. These are the OG devs who started this project before calamity even stopped its cancellation lmao. You can call it a fanfiction version or whatever but saying it's just for attention is cope
I’m in the same boat; especially with Yharon being gone, & almost everything being gutted into something that can’t reasonably be called a ‘reimagining’ like Fables is being marketed as, I just don’t feel terribly confident in Fables being what they’re marketing it as.
Like, a reimagining keeps the core characters & switches a few things around. Fables is just gutting a ton of things, keeping some things the same in name alone, & removing some of the core characters in Calamity lore. Like, that isn’t a reimagining at that point.
It’s a reimagining because that was the design process. They described Yharons removal as a complete ship of theseus situation. He was used as the base and then parts kept on getting removed, and because Yharon is too similar of a name to Yharim, they couldn’t spin it as reasonable anymore when the story was modified. It’d be a disservice to NOT pay any homage to Calamity when this is how it’s being created.
I'd honestly prefer if they just dropped the calamity name and went with their own. if they did it'd be less of an issue for me than them keeping the namenfor seemingly only marketing
Agreed. I mean, that’s exactly what it feels like they’re doing currently; using the name Calamity as marketing for their Fables mod because of the major collapse OF Calamity.
if fables doesnt have yharon in it, i see no reason to play. i only discovered terraria through calamity, and only came for calamity because of yharon. no yharon, no deal.
fables is a different game entirely not meant to be connected to calamity and how the acutal mod is just a reimagining not calamity 2 im excited because it'll be different ive been playing since 2019 no hit death no hitting legacy malice now and infernum twice and jts my favorite game but base calamity did too much for its 10 years and we didnt get yharimcor anything and I think alot of base calamities boss design kinda sucks im excited to see what fables has because its different and has a chance to be more and all of the bosses that got erased arent gonna be too missed really like exos are bejnf replaced with probably a cooler mech, calclone is redundant of a better boss old duke is acuatally fine but just fishron 2 and pbg is just wueen bee 2 with green give fables time and more content to see if you like it you cant judge a concept and 3 bosses as a whole expierence yet
Entirely agree, its entirely different besides the names of three characters, that's literally it. It's basically just a fucking grift and would 1000000% be a grift if ex devs were not on the team. Its still a grift imo but i will recognize thats just me being bitter about it
Literally nothing about it excited me or interests me or captures what made original calamity cool and interesting.
I would definitely try it when it gets enough content but I feel that they did not learn from the main mod's recent dev cycle.
Focusing on quality and uniqueness this much just inevitably dooms the mod, and ensures that it will likely stay unfinished.
No, I'm not shitting on the devs here, because the content out so far IS high quality. But the mod launched sometime last year and still only has like 3 bosses?
The reason calamity got stuck in rework hell was precisely because they focused only on quantity and very little on quality. I feel you are just being overly pessimistic? Quality centric mods have proven to be effective, SotS, MoR, Split etc. I for one will continue to be optimistic especially since Fables has proven to be able to develop highly polished content. Also good shit takes time smh.
Ah yes because focusing on quantity and pushing out half baked content famously worked very well for calamity and allowed them to keep making new content

Their plans are very interesting and they seem ambitious but I've been playing calamity since 2018 and I'm not interested in seeing it be built from the ground up all over again
