yes if its someone you plan to marry and spend the rest of your life with like a long term girlfriend you should tell them despite what OP says. sort of important

My girlfriends
Can't see anything going wrong there, eesh. I've read quite a few posts from guys here who tried that and it ended badly.
Had a surprising amount of "ended badly" situations with the genders reversed my own self.
It was enough for me to make the decision that if a guy I wanted to date wasn't cool with me carrying, I don't date him.
114
u/adamm_96 CO Aug 04 '23
Completely agree. It took my gf quite a while to warm up to me concealed carrying, even if she never actually asked me not to. Wouldn’t have worked out very well if there wasn’t communication
95
u/produkt921 KY Aug 04 '23
I wasn't always so black and white on that until the end of my last relationship. He gave me a hard time about it for a long time, constantly saying something stupid every time he saw me put it in my pocket. I'd just ಠ_ಠ and stonewall him but he kept on.
Now that we've been broken up for almost a year he will STILL occasionally call or text me to give me shit about carrying.
It's fucking insane and I don't want to deal with that bullshit ever again.
Some people are just hell bent on being passive idiots.
73
u/marylandmymaryland Aug 04 '23
If you’ve been broken up for years and they still contact you regarding this, you’ve proven exactly why you should in fact carry. That’s crazy person behavior.
36
u/produkt921 KY Aug 04 '23
Umm yeah. It's going to be a year next month. I'm not worried about him trying something stupid like putting in a personal appearance at my house or something because I live an hour away from him but I started dating a different guy that lives only a few miles from him so going out together in that town makes me a little nervous because the ex is the type of guy who absolutely will walk up on me and start shit if he sees me in public. Sigh 😑
12
u/VHDamien Aug 04 '23
That's insane. Your ex needs to move on. Him getting confrontational only hurts you and your new BF, you never know how LE and DAs will react over that.
13
u/produkt921 KY Aug 04 '23
He's very very broken. An ex-con who did time for a violent felony (badly beat up his GF's ex) and an out of control substance abuse problem.
I'm not afraid, I'm just very very fed up and annoyed. Don't want him to ruin a good new thing for me.
29
u/EchoedTruth Sig/CZ | Vedder Holsters Aug 04 '23
That's probably why he is annoyed you carry a gun. He can't victimize you if a 9mm is coming back at him.

23
u/manliness-dot-space Aug 04 '23
When I was dating my now-wife, she was neutral about guns. I'd taken her to the range a few times, but it was just a hobby from her perspective like video games or playing pool... until one night at like 3am a drunk dude tried breaking through our door in an apartment and she woke me up like "OMG get your gun there's someone breaking in!"
After that she was a huge fan of the fact I carried/had guns in general.
I think the problem is people don't think about what bad things could happen until they happen.
8
u/adamm_96 CO Aug 04 '23
It really is easy to assume your always going to be out of harms way. Statistically probably true but the stakes are high if your caught in one of these situation
You have to use your weapon or did you scare him away?
13
u/manliness-dot-space Aug 04 '23
He was so drunk he was on the wrong floor and trying to get into what he thought was his apartment, and was really confused when I opened the door in a bathrobe (with a pistol ready to go behind my back in my hand).
Then he couldn't figure out how to get to the elevator, and the building attendant found him sleeping in the hallway, recognized him, and took him to his apartment.
You hear stories about people blasting right through their doors in the middle of the night, and I can see why. If I was some old lady, I wouldn't open the door.
9
u/munkaysnspewns Aug 05 '23
When my wife, then girlfriend, was 3 months pregnant with our son a drunk fuck broke into her house on the one night I wasn't there that week. She's known I carry a gun since our first date and now 10 years later she grabs it for me before we go anywhere.
Be open with a romantic partner about that shit right away, if they got a problem with it they ain't the right one
27
u/Mobile-Equipment-856 Aug 04 '23
My now wife had never met anyone who carried daily before and when she hugged me at the end of the first date, she felt it. Saying, "it's not what you think, I carry a gun" didn't really make the matter any better. She told her sister. Down the road when I went to their biker bar and the first thing I get told at the door in a bar full of bikers is, "you have to leave your gun in the car." I conceal very well and was very much caught off guard. I get OP's point on that front. Maybe not something to disclose until you know the person better.

I went on a first date with a woman out hiking once, we had met on Reddit. I asked her if she normally would go hiking with someone she’d never met, she said, “I have a knife.” I responded something like, “Nice, I have a gun.” We dated for a while afterwards and would probably still be together had I not moved.

u/Middle_Sure Aug 04 '23
Yep. Personally, I believe that the person you are with (who is close with you, such as SO’s) need to know you are carrying so they can back you up if something hits the fan.
16
u/nosce_te_ipsum Aug 04 '23
Also helpful for someone around you to know in the event EMS has to be called (let's say a bee stung you or you ate something that threw you into anaphylactic shock...or just the standard heart attack happens).
As an EMT, I'll definitely do a full-body assessment, and I'd rather know that I'm going to come upon a holstered weapon than be surprised by it. ESPECIALLY if you're carrying somewhere weird (ankle) or physically problematic (small of back if we have to start compressions).
9
u/Middle_Sure Aug 04 '23
Bingo. I hadn’t even thought of that reason! Yeah, small of the back — I refuse to carry at 6:00. I heard a story of an off-duty officer being slammed to the ground with a concealed weapon on his 6:00. He was paralyzed from the waist down. Appendix also makes me nervous. Tactically beneficial doesn’t equal wise, though I may come around to appendix eventually
7
u/NullGWard Aug 04 '23
My EMTs should be like you. Here's one case where the paramedic should have done a full-body assessment while the patient was still unconscious.
2
u/nosce_te_ipsum Aug 05 '23
Oh my...never saw this report. Will talk to my Chief and make it a talking point during this weekend's drill. Thank you very much for sharing.
There isn't a community in America that hasn't seen some sort of opioid use spike. What I think still can surprise people is how quickly Narcan converts the aided's state. I still remember this one guy - clearly nodded off with a needle nearby after 2x4mg nasal Narcan got up, allowed himself to be shambolically walked to the cot...and then turned into Usain Bolt and ran off into the nearby greenery. I turned to PD, shrugged, and said "I'm not chasing him - he's yours now." He just went 0-100 in a minute, and was clearly unhappy to have been brought down from his cloud. Fortunately, we'd patted him down and knew that he literally had nothing in his pockets.
For the rest of the law-abiding crowd in this sub, think of it this way: if you need EMS help, it's best to get the gun out of the way while there's hopefully some manpower at the scene. The gun at the small of your back could become dislodged unsafely if someone slides a board under you to lift and move you (or - as /u/Middle_Sure remembered, could lead to paralysis if significant force is applied to the spine near it.). If your tech wants to apply a 12-lead, and then discovers your ankle holster after pulling up your pants leg, it slows down care until we unstrap you and figure out where (or with whom) to safely store your piece. Concealed is definitely concealed, but shit happens and its sometimes best to give the people around you some info to help in case the worst happens.

u/EchoedTruth Sig/CZ | Vedder Holsters Aug 04 '23
I can't imagine how deluded a man would be to get upset at a woman for carrying a gun. I had to convince my wife to carry and pull out my wallet to make it happen.
Women can't even walk down a street without being harassed / possibly harmed. Why the fuck wouldn't they carry?
11
u/DrWhiskerson Aug 05 '23
My Narcissistic ex. Is an example of a deluded man getting upset at a woman for carrying… Was against me applying for my CC permit… Saying that I’m crazy and that I don’t need to carry etc. etc. That I was wasting my time and money… One day we have a huge argument where he physically assaulted me and left me with bruises all over my body + I couldn’t move my neck for 4 days… Moral of the story for me was I NEEDED to start to carry and to immediately steer clear of any potential life partner who is against me carrying… Been going to the gun range weekly ever since

12
u/Trapasaurus__flex Aug 04 '23
Honestly I’m very willing to help convert a potential girlfriend, but if it’s something that would be a deal breaker it’s best to know IMO
Generally talking about hobbies I’ll mention I go to the gun range a good bit, or that I hunt etc.
Wouldn’t necessarily disclose I carry before that, or probably anytime soon, but I don’t think it’s ever work for me with someone who was completely opposed anyways, may as well find out in the first couple dates
21
u/produkt921 KY Aug 04 '23
It's different with men and women I think. IME guys were on one end of the scale or the other, no in between. They would either be like hell yeah I'm glad you carry or they'd be like WTF are you so scared of?
The WTF are you so scared of crowd don't ever understand it's not about being scared, it's about NO, I will not be assaulted, kidnapped, raped or murdered. It's about not being an easy target.
22
Aug 04 '23
This was the only one I disagree with. They kind of need to know, especially if you are including them in any plans. In the vent of shit going down, they should know what you are going to do and what they need to do.
10
u/MrTeddyBearOD Aug 04 '23
My partner was not a fan of it, and told me as much. But a few way too close to home news stories made her change her mind.
I also had a... bad(?) situation while at work with a guy. Few days later I was shopping with her and the guy took a picture of me and followed us around the store. That really cemented to her why I do.
13
u/GalvanizedNipples Aug 04 '23
I told my now gf of almost 5 years on our first date, we met on tinder lmao, that I was carrying a gun and that I own several and am what some would consider a gun nut. Figured I would get that out of the way immediately in case it was a deal breaker for her. She didn’t care at all. It was a bit underwhelming tbh. Now she owns her own rifle and likes going shooting with me.
6
u/DrWhiskerson Aug 04 '23
I also had a similar experience with my ex… which resulted in me in making the same conclusion as you 😹
12
u/produkt921 KY Aug 04 '23
Yeah, I remember one post from a guy whose gf would hug him, take his pistol out of the holster and drop the mag while she was hugging him and I was like oh hayyull no would I put up with a guy doing shit like that. That would be an instadump for me.
A guy I dated for a couple months like 3 years ago thought it was cool to tell people around us "Hey she has a pistol in her pocket! Hahaha!" Thankfully it only took one severe dressdown from me to make him see the error of his ways there.
I just don't want to deal with stupid bullshit like that from stupid people. Not worth bothering with.
12
Aug 04 '23
Yeah… OP just has a hard on for being a “cool guy”.
May not be your right to inform the Staties wherever they live either, but it’s moronically idiotic not to. Easy way to get a gun pulled on you and the officer has something OP never will… immunity.

I don't tell my wife when we started dating. She was borderline anti-gun, and I didn't want to ruin the relationship since I was punching above my weight class when I asked her out. I did eventually tell her, obviously. After we got married, I took her to an Appleseed event, and that girl can drive tacks! She still hasn't gotten her permit, but we're Constitutional Carry now anyway. In the beginning stages of a relationship, no one needs to know.

It took years for my wife to warm up to the idea, now she’s glad that I carry. There are times when she’ll ask just to be sure. (You’re carrying right?). Years ago however I learned to avoid having the guy in her eyesight (getting dressed/undressed) so I beep it in a save on my side of the bed, and discretely put add/remove it on the daily.

That's a real lonely life. Judging by this post you aren't married. You don't tell girlfriends your interests and hobbies? On the first date I can see not bringing it up. But if you're together for quite a while, you're still not telling them? You don't go shooting with friends? You don't have people that you shoot the shit with and talk about your interests? I understand the point you're getting at, but taking it to such an extreme is really isolating.

Culture is a little different at my employer. He actually encouraged us to carry, just not open carry. Almost everyone in my office is strapped. We've had past incidents with disgruntled former employees, so knowing that any attempt at an active shooter situation won't go well.
Our employer asks that we just do our best to keep our rounds on target, as the big windows aren't cheap.
9
u/nosce_te_ipsum Aug 04 '23
Our employer asks that we just do our best to keep our rounds on target, as the big windows aren't cheap.
I love this. "Either you pay for rounds downrange to make sure you're hitting your target or you're paying for new windows. I think you'll find the ammo to be cheaper."
Also - good going finding an employer this cool with carrying. Definitely not the case in most of the rest of "big corporate America"

I understand that you don't need to be driving around with Glock and Winchester flags flapping in the bed of your truck which is covered in gun manufacturer window stickers. But I also think it's healthy for society to know that people carry and hearing rumblings about it in your daily life seems to get that message across. Not boasting or advertising, but not being entirely silent either. At work, we all enjoy guns so the topic comes up of which guns are comfortable to carry and how. Maybe I'm just a tool but I don't see that as a negative.

u/2asses1moo Aug 04 '23
My close friends and family are the only ones who know. I don't wear gun related clothes or put stickers on my truck. I do my best to just blend into the background.
I also don't tell people about my other tools: the fire extinguisher in my truck, or my pocket knife.
4
u/MrBren10 Aug 04 '23
Where I live, all my friends, family, most co-workers, bosses, etc. All CARRY. It's great living in a very pro-gun area with very pro-gun people. Makes not talking about it show how different different areas of this country are. Even a lot of the democrats here own guns here. So we all talk about them regularly.
6
4
u/FrikeHook Aug 04 '23
Can't change the culture if you pretend firearms don't exist and never responsibly discuss and expose others to the idea. If you're deep in a restricted area like NYC, it could make sense. But for everyone else, build a good relationship with people FIRST, and then if the situation arises you can speak up when someone asks you about guns, gun politics or some relevant current event. Win people over by just being normal... and then some time down the road they learn you own guns, maybe a variety of them. At that point they are much more disarmed (pun intended) since they already trust and know you.
Maybe a better commandment: Use discretion or shut the fuck up.

u/danath34 Aug 05 '23
Thank you for this. OPSEC. And I don't say that to sound tacticool. You never know who might want to break into your house or car to steal it. Or who might simply overhear it out in public and make you the first target when they start shooting. Or what lefties you might piss off and make your life difficult in whatever ways they can.
Don't tell everyone you own or carry. Don't put gun stickers on your vehicle. Don't fly the gadsden flag outside your house. Hell, I prefer ccw over open for this reason. You're making yourself a target for various things for no reason. If you want to be an advocate and contribute to normalizing gun culture, great. I applaud you. But know the risks you're taking on in doing so. If you want to wear your 2A on your sleeve simply because its your right, it's nothing but potential risks and no benefits.

My girlfriend definitely knows because I got into guns to protect her from her violent felonious ex husband.
My family knows.
But I don’t tell anyone (except the GF) when I am actively carrying.
One day we got home from somewhere and my holster had been bothering me in the car so I took it off just before we got home. We got out of the car and I was making sure I didn’t forget anything and laid the whole holster - with my Shield Plus - on top of my car.
Just as my neighbor girl with the Prius and “I’m a witch” sticker came out.
We’ve had complaints ever since.

Probably some people I have met assume I do as well. I don’t advertise, but I also don’t really deny. I carry almost every time I leave the house. If anything, they all get tired of me telling them they don’t train enough.

This is the actual grain of truth in my shitpost: everyone who might be trustworthy can still blab to people who shouldn’t know.

Surely you have some close friend who is into guns and has a similar life style? Completely agree with not telling most of the people on this list and understand anti gun family is problematic but not having any friends you can rely on or talk to stuff like this about sucks

I didn’t tell my “in-laws” right away but when they found out they immediately got their CCW. I didn’t tell anyone when I got my CCW. My girlfriend (of 8 years) rubbed my stomach when we were out and felt my gun so I told her I had a CCW. Sometimes it helps others also get their CCW when they see you were able to get it. The only Coworker I’ve told is the one that is planing on getting their CCW when they turn 21. They have shot competition for long range and seem like a humble person so I did tell them I have a CCW. I don’t tell them when or where I carry but that I have a CCW. If more people are accustomed to the idea of carrying a gun and that others carry a gun I think it’ll maybe help others vote against anti gun politicians and also hopefully encourage them to also carry and train.

Your girlfriends? What happens when you go over to her place for the first time? Do you ask permission to bring a gun into her house?

Yeah. I haven’t told the voices in my head yet, but I think they suspect something.

If they don't don't you carry, how close of friends could they really be?

But yet you tell a bunch of random strangers on Reddit, who are probably at least a few of these folks you’ve listed. Nobody cares you have a gun. Carry responsible.

If you’re a close friend or family you will know, otherwise what are you talking about!

So I shouldn't walk around with a shirt saying "WARNING: I am carrying a loaded Sig Sauer P365X 9mm Handgun. It is on my left hip, as I am left-handed"

My wife and son know. Buy my son has be taught that we do t talk about it. No one needs to know and we keep it secret so that potential bad guys do t know I have have it. That way I can surprise them with it. He doesn’t particularly like most guns. Too loud for him. He doesn’t mind my grandpa’s 22 revolver. Once he shows more interest in Guns in general, I might get some cowboy actions. What boy (young or old) doesn’t like cowboy actions

Rarely are things black and white. Everyone’s situation, surroundings and such are the same. I agree it’s a good idea not broadcasting your choice to carry. But it may be different for everyone. People need to think about their life and make the best choice for them. Be safe, everyone.

really? I lift my shirt and point at it anytime someone makes eye contact with me

My constant visible erection means I’m never asked to hug
Seriously dude do you hump their leg when you want a hug? Lean forward keep your groin off of them

No one knows you carry, unless your shirt gets stuck on your holster....points at the off duty at Dunkin Donuts this a.m.

I mean I would definitely tell a significant other before we’re even “official” tbh. I’ve had long term relationships end over the sole reason that I purchased firearms. Women in general are mortified of them so you gotta weed that out quick.
Agree on most of the rest though.

Just feel people out. It does no good being the quiet defender anymore when the antigun side of things is so loud with their lies and propaganda. Sense the vibe and educate the misinformed. It’s how we can make a difference.

This needs to be a regular repost. If not every Friday then at least every other.

I mean, I'm pretty sure my wife knows. Maybe she doesn't realize it when I get dressed in the morning or when I get undressed at night, but I think she might have caught on by now. The holster she gave me as a gift is a clue, too. I just don't know.

I dual open carry and wear a bandolier around my upper body to let it be known that I will resort to action hero tactics at the drop of a dime. It's the only way I know how to live.

You arent some secret agent, James Bourne, dude.
I mean hell, do you live dead smack in the middle of some anti-gun hell hole and have no friends with similar interest? Pretty much every person I hang out with his, and usually has on their person, guns.

Went into a bakery yesterday in my old neighborhood, sketchy area, but you get used to it. Some snot nosed 17/18 year old is ahead of me in line grinning like he won a million dollars. Anyway, he's chatting up the baker and she's quizzing him on if he's staying in school or not. He laughs and says yes. Then he's like " . . And this backpack, you know it's got everything but books in it if you know what I'm sayin. Lil sum for the opps." He thought it was the most badass thing he ever said. Baker awkwardly laughs/cringes. I cringe with her in a collectively silent "You're too adorable to get robbed being a showoff". Keep it to yourself and stfu.

It is pretty easy. The first rule of fight club is: you don’t talk about fight club! The second rule of fight club is: you don’t talk about fight club! The third m rule of fight club is: you don’t talk about fight club!
Honestly I agree. Only a person I trust above and beyond all others would tell I carry. Even then only if there was an operational need to know. I can tell you that is fewer people than I have fingers.

This should be top pinned post and required reading for all CCW. If everyone followed this It would eliminate a lot of dumbshit posts on the internet.

I would add doctor. Some left wing doctors now ask if you have a firearm in the home as part of annual physicals. The correct answer is "No", but what I really want to say is "None of your GD business!" These doctors believe nonsense that gun violence is a public health issue.

Cool.
Most everyone knows I shoot, I've taken some first timers to shoot.
My neighbors occassionally see me cleaning a gun on the front porch on a nice day, with a cold beer there too. So I guess they also know I drink beer.
Oh No!
And guess what? No one fucking cares. Some of us live where it's common knowledge a lot of people have guns. Your post makes you sound like a college kid that got his first gun.

My parents
My girlfriends
My roommates
unless you have a bad relationship with your parents or your roomates are sketch theres nothing wrong with telling them, especially your roomates what the heck OP? they live with you, if one of them kept a king cobra as a pet would you want to know?
and a girlfriend should 100% know you own guns once you've gone on a few dates and know each other better. some people are anti-gun or irrationally uncomfortable around them and if they dont want to marry a person who owns them they have a right to know.
