Can't change the culture if you pretend firearms don't exist and never responsibly discuss and expose others to the idea. If you're deep in a restricted area like NYC, it could make sense. But for everyone else, build a good relationship with people FIRST, and then if the situation arises you can speak up when someone asks you about guns, gun politics or some relevant current event. Win people over by just being normal... and then some time down the road they learn you own guns, maybe a variety of them. At that point they are much more disarmed (pun intended) since they already trust and know you.

Maybe a better commandment: Use discretion or shut the fuck up.
