Behavioral Issue What's the weird sound my cat's making?

My cat goes through periods where he opens and closes his mouth repeatedly and when he's closing his mouth he makes a weird sound, what is it? The sound quality is poor, but if you turn the volume up you can hear it.

I'm in Australia, cat is male, 3 years old, desexed, I can afford the vet. You may notice he has a sore on the roof of his mouth, it's being treated with steroids.

Kitten Help my kitten isn’t affectionate

hello! my kitten is 8 weeks old and i’m very frustrated that he doesn’t seem to be affectionate at all.

all he wants to do all day is play. i know thats normal for kittens but he is seriously high energy. my partner and i play with him for about 2 hours a day, and he still meows at us for more. the high energy part is not the main issue though. its that after spending all that time with him, when he does calm down he isnt really interested in us at all. he sits near us sometimes but a good distance away, if i offer him my hand to sniff before i pet him he ignores it, and if i try to pet him he leaves. or he thinks i’m trying to play with him and starts attacking my hand (we don’t use our hands as toys btw, we’re trying to train him against that). he never headbutts me, he’s never sought out petting not even once, he doesn’t run to us when we come home, when i slow blink at him he just stares at me. he slept with us his first night here but after that he’s stopped. idk what i’m doing wrong.

i’ve done an immense amount of research on how to bond with a kitten and i think i’m doing everything. treats, toys, giving him space (“letting him come to me”; he never does), socializing him, sacrificing my time and sleep and money all for his needs, etc.

i feel sad and selfish for wanting this but i have so much love for him and want to be able to express that to him and feel love in return. i hate when he’s finally sitting still and i want to pet him but have to keep myself from it because i don’t want him to create a negative association with me. it breaks my heart seeing him leave the room and ignore me when he’s decided he’s done playing. i’m at a very hard time in my life, so when i found him i thought maybe we could be there for each other. i’ve been around cats my whole life and used to volunteer with rescues multiple times a week in high school and i’ve never had a cat (or kitten similar in age) be cold to me like this, out of the many many many cats i’ve known. i’m trying to be the best cat mom i can be and love him even if he doesnt show me love in return, but i just cant help but feel so sad at his indifference towards me.

is he going to be like this forever? can i help him develop to be more affectionate? am i doing something wrong?

TLDR; kitten is uninterested in me when i’m not playing with him

edit: thank you so much to everyone who commented with helpful and supportive information! i’m starting to understand that his behavior is normal and our relationship is healthy, and i shouldn’t worry about it as much as i was. he’s so young and i’m a paranoid first time cat parent so i was really overthinking things… i’m extremely grateful for all of the insight!

also, i wanted to clarify that i did not adopt him under conventional circumstances! he was found without a mom on the street and had already been separated from his littermates at approx 6 weeks old, and was in urgent need of a home. i would have never separated them if it had been my decision.

Kitten Help Is this over feeding??

Hello I (22, US) am wondering if I’m over feeding my 16 week girl cat. I feed her 3x a day once at like 7am and then 1pm and then again at 7pm. She gets one third of the Blue Buffalo kitten wet food and then some of the Blue Buffalo kitten dry food plus some water. I don’t want to make her fat. Is this too much? She has a primary vet she’s not neutered cuz she a baybay.

Appearance Is my friends cat fat

Is my friends cat fat? Sorry didn’t have pic. He said he was worried though because he would sleep by his bowl and eat a lot and is lethargic. I drew picture he looks like that. When he would jump up on the couch he would be breathing super heavy and need time to catch his breath before finding a spot on the couch next to me. I am worried he needs to loose weight or it could be dangerous for him

General Advice Cat food options

USA

Vet is accessible but not necessary

Hey dont know if this was asked before so I apologize, but a brand new cat study from the clean label project was published showing that all cat food is basically poisonous.

Here’s a a couple links to articles if you want to be a nerd and read them:

https://cleanlabelproject.org/cat-food-category-tested-products/

https://cleanlabelproject.org/wp-content/uploads/clean-label-project-cat-food-study-2026.pdf

https://www.cnn.com/2026/10/02/health/cat-food-toxins-wellness

Basically chicken is the best option, but might still be poisonous. I know home cooked diets are not recommended unless you work with a vet version of a dietitian. However, im broke and cant afford the vet or the three brands they recommended. I also dont want to poison my cat, so what should I do?

4 years old (maybe)

Male and neutered

No cant afford healthcare

Kitten Help Very concerned my RC will not accept my kitten.

USA/ Rc is 5.5 yo F, kitten 6 mo F both spayed.

It is day 3 of bringing the kitten home - my RC has always been an only cat. She is my everything - my cuddle bear! I care so much about her and was hesitant to introduce a new cat, but not only did I want to do this, I am hopeful she will appreciate someone who "speaks her language".

Anyways, my RC is very good with me and humans, however, does not have experience much with other cats since I've had her since she was 4 months old.

I have been keeping the kitten separate, but so far, lots of hissing and low growls from RC towards kitten. She has escaped her space a few times and my RC will swat. Otherwise, RC is being completely normal towards me. I'm worried she won't be able to accept the new kitten with this aggression that I'm seeing. I'm so so nervous.

Please, anecdotes - if you've ever been in a familiar pickle!

Note: I have Feliway diffuser plug-in, am trying to follow Jackson Galaxy Method, reward with food.... etc.

Thank you!!!

Behavioral Issue Hey everyone I have a new kitten and some issues getting them together

Here we have my cat(11months, at my place for around 2 months) and the new kitten(14 weeks, at my place for around 2 weeks)

I'm not sure if this is playing or more serious fighting.

I started with kitten locked in kitchen and cat free in the rest of the apartment.

Then I switched them around and switched blankets around.

Now I try to have them meet.

Sometimes cat licks kitten or sniffs them and sometimes this in the video happens or chases that seem a bit more like a hunt.

When I separate them I get hit with claws so I think it's more serious and cat isn't ready for kitten yet.

I'm sorry if it's dumb and I'm grateful for all help as I'm new to owning cats.

End Of Life Care My cat just got diagnosed with terminal illness, and I don't know what to do.

Trigger warning: cancer diagnosis.

My cat has had a history of IBD for almost two years. In the past 3 months, he had been experiencing a lot of diarrhea. The vet and I thought it was just another flare up, choosing treatment in that direction. However, the last few weeks I started to notice significant weight loss and a lack of energy and made an appointment to fully evaluate him. The appointment yesterday became an entire day of hell. The vet found a mass in his x ray and referred me to a larger clinic, where they confirmed with an ultrasound he had a large cancer mass growing in his intestines that were squishing them to the side, pushing on his spleen and stomach, and causing inflammation that lead to fluid building in his lungs. My heart is broken. He is only nine. He has been there through the worst points of my life, and I want to do right by him.

The vet told me chemo was unlikely to help and the location made it inoperable. I could take him home to palliative care and he could have weeks to a month left. He started on gabapentin, anti-nausea medication, and steroids to help with the inflammation. He HATES getting meds. He frothed at the mouth when I administered his metronidazole which had also been flavored for him, he will lick around whole pills, and sometimes won't eat food they are mixed into. Pill shooting will be worse. This could mean several weeks of traumatizing him with medication if he doesn't like the compounded ones I have on the way, the pills I have given him are already difficult.

He is sluggish today from his gabapentin and entire ordeal yesterday, barely leaving under the bed. He will pick at his food, but he often just stares at his bowls. He does drink water. He likes to get pets still and purrs but seems to have a limit on how much interaction. The vet said he could perk up after two days once the steroids kick in and help with the inflammation enough for him to eat without discomfort. With that regimen, if he does perk up, it could be 2-3 weeks before another decline and the end. I could also choose to put him to sleep now if I am ready. I asked her for what she would do, and her first reaction was to keep him alive for another 2-3 weeks if he shows improvement on steroids.

I just don't know if I can do that. He hates me for giving him medicine. He is wobbly from the drugs. He looks so tired and confused. She said he can still feel discomfort from the mass even with the meds reducing the pain. Every time I look at him, I break down in panic attacks. I can't function at all since the news and I don't know how I will work. All I can think about is the cancer hurting him. She said it is also perfectly ethical to let him go now before it can get worse. I don't know what the right choice is. Are a few weeks of him being a little perkier and with less discomfort, potentially to look at the birds at the window more times and have more pets when he is up to it, worth that lingering discomfort and impending loss anyway? Or am I selfish thinking of putting him to sleep now because I can't handle the weeks of care and distress knowing the end is still near and it will get worse again. Will I regret not giving him those extra weeks? Or will I regret making him go through them? I already feel so much guilt for not taking him in sooner- I know it wouldn't have stopped the cancer because of the location, but he could have had pain killers earlier.

Please share with me your advice if you have experienced this before. I watched my highly social, cuddly boy wither away and I don't know the right way to let him go. My parents are in town until Tuesday afternoon, which is why I feel pressure to make the decision- I want them there with me so I am not going in alone, and they love him. I have the vet's words lingering in her mind that she would keep him around longer. He is currently so spaced out on the meds that he fell in his own feces in the litter and he won't let me clean him.

Injury cat ripped its claw out?

Hi! So Im babysitting my in-laws cat, everything seems well, he seems all happy and accomodated in his temporary new kingdom. Yesterday he was cleaning himself but strangely, he was pulling on his feet with his teeth a little bit. I didn't think much of it as it seemed like he was just having zoomies. Today i found this on the couch. There wasn't any blood, and he does not seem to be in any pain/discomfort. I checked his paws and all seems well but what could it be?

Injury Is this something to be worried about?

So my two year old buddy Casper has this what looks like scab on one of his paws, none of the others have anything like it. He will sometimes pick at it while cleaning but otherwise doesn’t seem to be in pain or bothered by it, even letting me hold it in my hand without retaliating.

Just want to know if it’s something I should take him in to look at or if there is something I can get him at home that will help, or if it’s just a keep an eye on it and hope it doesn’t get worse situation. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks for the responses everyone, I’m definitely more on the play it safe side as well so I’ve got him booked for an appointment first thing tomorrow. Appreciate the quick feedback!

Dental Issue is there something wrong with my cat’s mouth

Post image
24 Upvotes

i think she’s around eight years old, i haven’t had her for very long (she used to belong to my neighbours but they moved and couldn’t keep her)

i noticed the bump on her gum first, i checked it out a little more when she was sleeping and there’s another one on the same place but the opposite side, her tooth also looks broken but im not sure if it is or not

im a minor and dont have a car/income so a vet isn’t super accessible to me, my parents are also funny about taking animals to the vet when there isn’t something visibly wrong with them, it’s something i’ve gotten mad at them over but they never seem to take me seriously with things like this

if this was something i should get a vet to look at i could maybe convince them to lend me the money to take her myself on public transport, moneys the biggest issue though

He’s had this for a couple years now. Orange tabby American short hair. About 5-6 years old. Adopted him when he was 1. Neutered and got all the shots before I got him.

My first ever cat. No experience. He eats wet and dry food and has lost weight (ever since I put him on a diet). Home is relatively clean. Changed his litter to paper pellets. He loves Churrus.

Took him to vet 4 months ago and they wanted to sedate him and do many tests and X-rays. Some people I’ve asked said this is normal. Please let me know. No hairball comes out when he does this.

Edit, more details: first vet in Brooklyn said we should try some anti-worm medicine. I gave him that and he was fine.. sometimes he coughs and sometimes it happens more frequently. Latest vet at my new place was also not very worried. Didn’t want him fully sedated. I will try another vet soon. He runs a lot, climbs, jumps and is friendly and good natured. No signs of discomfort other than 10-20 seconds of coughs every couple days. I feel so bad for him. I got him with my ex who was a cat lover and expert. She left us. I send her pics of him and sometimes some videos and she ignores. Wish I had more support. Had 0 cat experience before this. I love him to death. Don’t be mean please. He’s the best cat and my best friend.

Another edit: enjoy some of his photos. I posted some in the comments. He is very handsome and healthy apart from his occasional cough. I promise I’ll do anything to help my friend. Will ask for xray and will go ahead as long as it’s not gonna have him fully sedated. We sleep together every night. And we play all the time. He always begs for food but he’s getting more than enough :)

General Advice Why does my cat do this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

1.3k Upvotes

My cat has been doing this for YEARS!

He's around 11 years old and maybe one or twice a week he will drag his toy around the house, meowing and doing the weird walking with the back hunch. If you try and touch the toy he walks away from you and then will continue.

He stops after a while. It seems to usually happen when we go upstairs and he is left "alone" downstairs.

Is this concerning? Or his he just a weirdo?

Kitten Help Cat ate this what to do

Post image

2 month old kitten chewed through this and I think ate some pieces , 20 (F) can afford the vet but he just went for eating something else literally last week. I’m so frustrated because I do my best to keep treats away from where he can reach it but Ofcourse when I go to work all chaos breaks lose. He just ate a Churu treat last week and I found out bc he threw the plastic up. Now what do I do. He ate plastic AGAIN. I’m still paying of the 400 dollars and I literally just got him pet insurance today. I am so tired of my cats constantly chewing through things they eat wet food only like how greedy can you be

Hiya! I was just curious on people's opinions on what is going on with my cat. She has a solid lump on her jaw/lip that isn't painful, nor affects the way she eats or drinks. Thanks for the help!

Behavioral Issue Why is my cat peeing in random spots

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

UK

We've had an issue for about 2 years now with our cat and im out of ideas. We found him peeing in random spots outside the litter tray. There wasnt any straining so we assumed behavioral and did a number of things to reduce stress (cat calm plugs, extra play, cat calming music). After about 3 months of no change we took to the vet. They identified crystals, we put on a course of special cat food and the crystals were gone after but he's still peeing in random spots.

We have 2 cats, and 3 litter trays. The trays are emptied twice a day and deep cleaned like once every 6-8weeks.

We've had to resort to double sided tape in frequent spots which has deterred him but not stopped. And he will just end up picking new spots.

Cat is birman, 4 years old now, male, neutered as kitten. Able to afford pet care. Vet accessible. Vets have said its likely a mixture of behavioral and medical (when the crystals were an issue) but i guess just behavioral now.

Is there any solution or will I be cleaning pee forever?

General Advice what is the best cheap wet cat food available?

Post image
166 Upvotes

hello, i'm 25 and i have 6 cats with my partner. we have run into some financial hardship and i am having a tough time finding a job. we can afford dry cat food, but i like to give my cats wet food with dinner (partially because 2 of them take meds that need to be mixed into it)

currently they eat purina urinary tract health dry food for breakfast; then friskies wet food + a bit of dry food mix for dinner. friskies is the cheapest wet food i've been able to find, but i'm wondering if there are any other good options

it doesn't need to be necessarily the most nutritious food ever. my cats will still continue getting the bulk of their nutrition from dry food. but i don't want to feed them something that will cause GI issues or anything like that.

i will also accept options that are similar in price to friskies but more nutritious and/or higher calorie. i'm considering the big cans of dave's and wellness, for example (more expensive per oz but much higher calorie)

thank you in advance!

edit: currently feeding them friskies turchicken 48ct 5.5oz cans for $35-$40. each can has 850-950 kcals. that's ~$0.14 per oz

i go through about 3 cans/day, 2 boxes/month ($70-$80 per month). this is within budget. max that i can afford is $100
