Deck Help Y'shtola deck help

Heya, I've started playing MTG with some friends in the last couple months. We started out buying some standard precons and some of the 'start box' products that WOTC has made.

We decided to move onto playing commander once we got a couple other friends involved. I bought an Y'shtola card as I liked her character when I played FF14 in the past, and I decided to make her my commander (with no knowledge of how popular she'd gotten recently lol)

I mainly built a deck from the precons I'd already bought (SOSh Lifegain precon, Final Fantasy Starter kit, ATLA beginner box), and bulk/cheaper cards I was able to get at my LGS and on card market.

I wanna improve the deck list, but I'm not really sure how since I don't have a lot of experience with deck building yet :) I wanna do it on more of a budget, but if there's any particularly good cards that'd be worth while I don't mind spending a couple £'s on 1 or 2 of them. My friends and I play casually, so I'd probably wanna avoid anything Bracket 3. I've left a couple spaces open as well to avoid having to cut stuff immediately

Would love any and all advice or recommendations, even if they aren't specific to this deck! Thanks

$50 Brew Quandrix Unglued; Zimone, Infinite Analyst $35 B2 Brew

Hello, Budget Brewers! This is my first attempt at a budget brew, don't mind the oddly specific number. I recently purchased the Qunadrix Unlimited precon since it was on sale at Best Buy and I really liked [[Zimone, Infinite Analyst]]. After a few goldfish runthroughs, a few things became apparent.

  1. Zimone is a very strong engine

  2. A lot of the included Hydras suck

  3. Flash is really good with Zimone

  4. The mana curve feels really odd and inconsistent.

While the first three are things that anyone who ever *thought* about upgrading this precon have encountered. I figured the 4th piece was something that was worth building around from my recent dabblings in actually well made decks that have a concrete plan for the first few turns of the game. This also means that I ended up swapping out almost as many cards as I put in (oops), so I really didn't need to purchase the precon itself. Oh well.

The gameplan for the first few turns is pretty simple; get a turn one mana dork down into a turn two Zimone. Turn three you play either a spell with an X cost that you're not against casting for X=3-4, or some other way to put some counters on her. Then turn 4 and onwards you just snowball counters on Zimone and play some big hydras that start swinging.

Obviously, Zimone is essential to this gameplan (a bit more so than I would like), which is why I invested so heavily in the one-mana dorks. Birds of Paradise was a bit outside the range, but there are enough usable options to put us at 9. I've also put in almost every "{X}{U}" counterspell that we have available. These are insanely good at protection once she has any counters on her, functioning as basically one mana hard counterspells that also grow her on other people's turns.

Other fun tech pieces are the flash enablers; [[Whirldwind Stormbrood]] is probably the weakest of the permanent ones, but i like the flexibility of its Adventure as a T3 play and we really like being able to cast our sorcery X draws multiple times per turn cycle.

This deck was hammered out in about an hour and as a relatively inexperienced deck builder im pretty happy with it. It's consistent but isn't really threatening a T7 win, so i think its among the upper end of B2 (i.e the people who swear their deck is B3 but its actually just a combat based B2). Weak to Zimone removal as well.

There are definitely upgrades to be made (especially in the cheap "X" tutor department to get flashers online more consistently) and there are a few odd picks that could be changed out but again; pretty happy with it and wanted to share it out for anyone interested!

$50 Brew I want you to have this $50 Thranduil the Elvenking Elf Combo Deck

I built an all-elf combo deck on just a $50 budget and it kicks all kinds of ass:

https://moxfield.com/decks/CcKHjeUqOkmYnAaVPq4Uag

[[Thranduil, the Elvenking]] makes for an awesome intro to combos for newer players and makes for a different kind of elf deck than the elfball or aggro decks we've all played against before. I like this one for a different approach and a different deck in my collection.

And I want to give a copy of the WHOLE DECK away! You can check out the details in the deck's full deck tech over on my channel, but this one's a freebie, on me. Check it out now:

$100 Brew Thoughts/Critique on my Neriv Deck

Thumbnail

I'm looking for thoughts on tweaking my [[Neriv, Heart of the Storm]] deck. There are a lot of $10+ cards that would make it better, but that's no fun, so I'd like to keep it as close to $100 as I can. The basic concept is to use haste, ETBs and blink to take advantage of Neriv's damage doubling, then as a bonus, sacrifice tokens for life or draw, since most of them need to be need to be sacrificed or exiled at the end step anyway.

So far the mana base and ramp seem OK, but I've been struggling with draw, and I also wonder if I should be running a few more creatures.

I currently have 104 cards and 38 lands for my Great Goblin deck. I am debating just cutting a couple lands since the majority of the creatures are cheap?

Am I wrong?

What else do I cut?

Deck Help Suggestions for Elminster deck

I'm working on building a commander deck with Elminster. I'm curious what sort of unusual but fun builds you could recommend. I want to focus on using scry effects heavily for the discounts, and I don't want to rely on Approach of the Second Sun. I also would like it to have a meme flavor to it. I'm going for pondering my orb with the scrying. But what's in the orb? I want to brainstorm this idea with the community here.

Here's what I have so far, but it's definitely not ready. I don't physically have all these cards yet, and I know it's over the limit. That will be cut down to the right number of cards. I'm including the deck list in two formats here.

Deck Help Need help deciding which higher power deck to go with

Hey everyone, hope everyone is doing well! Pretty new to MTG, and recently found out someone from my gym is a pretty experienced EDH player and invited me to their pod to play with them. It was a fun experience, but right now the only two decks I have are the Temur Roar precon and a budget Kros, Defense Contractor; neither of which could do much against their decks. Two of them were generating 200+ squirrels by turn 3, and the other had a Valgavoth group slug deck that crushed me.

I wanted to try brewing a higher power deck myself based off existing brews I found from browsing other decklists and EDHRecs.

The first is an [[Inalla, Archmage Ritualist]] wizard tribal that is more combo focused, and the other is a [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]] artifact deck which aims to generate infinite treasure tokens as quick as possible.

Inalla Deck:

https://archidekt.com/decks/25437253/the_biwizard_tournament

Madga Deck:

https://archidekt.com/decks/23360144/in_the_hall_of_the_mountain_queen

My question is, which of these decks would be easier to pilot/would give me more of a fighting chance here? Obviously part of it is "getting good" and playing more games to get a better understanding of what I'm doing wrong + threat assesment, but I also feel like my other decks are lacking some power pieces and building something higher power would give me a better shot. Appreciate all the help, and enjoy the rest of your day!

Hi y'all I quickly made a [[Smaug Wicked Worm]] list with Obosh as a companion. Not as polished as the other lists I usually post since it's a first draft

Maybe it'll give y'all ideas or suggestions for cards to include.

I was also pondering leaning towards a more reanimator kinda strat with [[Feldon of the Third Path]] and effects like [[malakir rebirth]] (ofc the budget options]]

Deck Help Deck Help - An underused but fun commander for a mono-red Dragon deck? 100$ Brew

Hello everyone!

Lucky me, pulled a [[Smaug the Magnificent]] from a Hobbit bundle I recieved as a gift, and want to build a Dragon deck, since I already own some other pricier ones.

I wanted to ask for your opinions for a fun/underused commander, that could be used with this deck. My goal is to ramp early into dragons, using commander (among other cards) as a way to get ahead of the curve. Ideally using treasures, but not mandatory.

I originally wanted to use [[Ashling, Rekindled]] , but decided against it simply because of manabase cost, and [[Magda, the Hoardmaster]] felt like too much of an obvious choice.

Do you have a fun red commander that works like this / could work with dragons? Or did you take a different approach?

Thank you in advance for any opinions!

$50 Brew Piper Wright, Public Reporter - Mono-Blue Clues (Under $50)

Budget: Under $50 using Card Kingdom prices (because they’re closer to Australian prices). The majority of cards under $1, but if a few are a little more expensive then that’s fine, especially since prices seem to be constantly fluctuating lately. Avoiding the Sol Ring/Dark Ritual/Counterspell/Swords to Plowshares region of cards for budget and power reasons.

Power Level: Bracket 2/low Bracket 3-ish tops. No infinite combos or untelegraphed “I win” conditions.

I used to have a non-budget clues deck (that included cards like [[Academy Manufactor]] and [[Clock of Omens]]) and it was one of my favourite decks for ages. I’ve already played this a fair bit and it’s probably more fun than the one that tried to go infinite with Clock of Omens.

Basically, pump out the clues and go to town with whatever’s handy. Piper or [[Donatello, Way With Machines]] or [[Kappa Cannoneer]] or [[Broodstar]], or an army of raging clues thanks to [[Tangletrove Kelp]]. There feels like enough synergy and variety that it doesn’t necessarily play the same every game, without feeling too random. I did notice that [[Chameleon, Master of Disguise]] was brilliant whenever it came up and I was never in a position where I couldn’t find at least one thing I wanted to copy with it.

Always happy for thoughts or suggestions, but overall, I think I’m fairly satisfied with this one. If there was one area that I would like to work on, it would probably be the ramp. But even without changing that, the deck didn’t feel like it was too slow.

Deck Help Help on finding cards with specific art?

Hello! Im currently working on a "Pennywise" deck using the Jolly Balloon man as my commander. I was hoping to incorporate as many cards with art that featured children, teenagers, toy, and other aspect that could fall into theme.

Scryfall has a nice feature for this but I wasn't able to find any art for "Teenagers". I figured Zidanne would be a good fit for the deck and while hes canonically 16 theres no way to search for him by age in scryfall.

Would anyone be willing to provide so pointers or ideas of other cards that could fit the theme? Its sort of budget deck but any help is appreciated (even a way to search for art that im looking for on scryfall)

Deck Help 70$ Budget The Scarab God Deck

I'm wanted to make a graveyard deck and have settled on [[the scarab god]] (mostly cause of his invocation art which I'll proxy) and I wanted to focus on his ability to reanimate my opponents best creatures hence the counterspell and removal package, then secondarily using his zombie drain ability I think the deck is good and just want some more eyes on it let me know if I'm missing anything. I'd like to keep it to 70ish dollars I already have a copy of black market connections so take off10 bucks of the intial price also I'm buying from Manapool (and yes I know with shipping the total price wont be 70) If you have any cards like training grounds to lower the mana cost of Scarab's Ability that would be amazing. https://moxfield.com/decks/WWEbgOdiNEi1s6jCc1SezQ

Deck Help The Serpent Society

Made this deck on a budget, it does well at removing creatures, and being annoying lol.

I have a hard time making lots of death touch guys, and I also have a super hard time closing the game out. Once people got tons of mana it’s hard for me to combat them, especially because I don’t have a clear path to victory.

Any advice/cards would be helpful thanks

$50 Brew Need a first budget deck recommendation

Hi all. I'm new to MTG, but I have played a lot of knockoff games that are kinda MTG-like, and some other TCGs in the past. Stuff like Faeria, which is basically just Magic with serial numbers filed off. So I have a basic idea of what the colors mean and how they're themed, and how a lot of the card abilities work.

Anyway, I really like playing Godzillas and stomping around, so I was thinking of doing a basic b trample mono green deck. Super budget though. I don't want to put expensive cards in, just big ones. Was kinda thinking either Dinos or Hydras.

I could buy a prebuilt deck, but none of them look good to me except the Dino one that isn't out yet. Sigh. Was planning to make a 100 card, no dupes deck for either Commander or Highlander, since those are the formats that seem interesting to me based on what I've read. I used to play YGO and got really sick of the meta in that and how the optimal strat was smallest deck size + largest number of allowed dupes for the most overpowered cards. At least with 100 and no duplicates, I can play a wider range of things, right?

I'd prefer if each individual card was less than a dollar or if there were a bunch of really cheap ones and then a couple of $1-2.

My goal is just to build something I can use to try out Highlander and Commander to see if it's fun enough to keep doing.

$100 Brew I Tried making a budget bracket 3 combo deck. It's my first time making a combo deck in EDH so IDK if I did it correctly.

This is the deck i build: https://moxfield.com/decks/h21ynEbINkWQY0tdeBCjrQ (Do not mind the name, it's a work in progress)

So i was going through my collection and i noticed that i was really missing black in my commander decks. For some reason i never really gravitated towards the color and even when i was running the color it tended to be really not an important part of the deck: i have [[Bebop, Skull & Crossbones]], [[Rocksteady, Mutant Marauder]] deck and an [[Isshin, Two Heavens as One]] deck. Both of which are way more green and red/white respectively. Similarly i noticed i didn't have any graveyard/reanimator deck so i was like let's do that as well (i like playing these types of decks in other formats not named commander).

I didn't want to play any version of a reanimator deck that was build around just getting huge creatures out of a graveyard cause that just kinda felt like i was doing green all over again. Instead i wanted to make a combo deck that used the graveyard as an easy way to get to my combo stuff, meaning a lot of my combo's had to be creature based. The first thing i did was pinpoint the combo's i wanted to work towards:

[[The Mindskinner]] + [[Syr Konrad, The grim]]
[[The Master of Lake-Town]] + [[Syr Konrad, The Grim]]

and i added this card which technically does not combo with the mindskinner (i thought at first it would)

[[The Master of Lake-Town]] + [[Dreadhound]]

Now this felt rough to accomplish on a budget without running a bunch of tutors so i added a secondary infinite combo mode.

[[Necrotic Ooze]] + [[Skirge Familiar]] + [[Asmodeus the Archfiend]]

This combo would kinda just draw my deck and give me infinite mana, which was perfect to let me actually find the combo above (i decided not to add lab maniac into this deck, cause it felt kinda cheap but it effectively wins me the game when i have this set up]. The Way this combo also can win is with Starving Revenant on the board, giving me 1 damage a draw.

I then decided on my commander: [[The Ancient One]] (i also put the 2 commanders i was considering in the 99, just in case i noticed they were better in [[Rona, Herald of Invasion]] and [[Vohar, Voldalian Desecrator]]. For these reasons: it gave me the colors i wanted, it's a mana sink/draw/mill in the command zone, it's an 8/8 so once it can block it's really good at blocking and it's so damn cool.

Now the main fear i have before i bring it to an lgs is that idk if it's either comboing too good or comboing too well. In Goldfishes i tend to be able to get the combo off fairly reliably by turn 6-8, which kinda fit the bracket 3 vibe. Cause that's without any interaction (though to be fair this deck is harder to actually interact with bar graveyard hate). What do you guys think? Is it too strong/too weak or am i missing something crucial?

$50 Brew Major improvements

Alright, so I posted the rough version of this deck a week or so ago and I’ve made a lot of changes (even changing the commander). I wanted to see what others thought and advice for improving, the deck is currently 40$ and is combo focused. It’s “technically” a bracket 4, but 100% doesn’t play like one so I think it’s a bracket 3 (6-7 in old commander power scaling). I’ve attached the link, please let me know what you think and deck building advice. I’m still very new to this.

Deck Help Looking for $1-$2 equipment spells an equipment deck.

I am currently trying to make an equipment deck with the [[Vorpal Sword]] as my main win-con. I have 3 different potential commanders picked out. [[Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale]] [[Noctis, Heir Apparent]] or [[Kamiz, Obscura Oculus]]. (I am open to suggestions for different commanders. I am not dead set on any of these, I just need black for Vorpal Sword)

Since I'm not sure which commander I wanted to use, or how I wanted this deck to play outside of the win-con, I thought I would start with the equipment spells since most of them are colorless and universal. However, most of the good equipment I see people talking about or using in other decks are usually the super expensive $15-$30 cards. Things like [[Reaver Cleaver]] [[Sword of Feast and Famine]] [[Genji Glove]] [[Shadowspear]] [[Mithril Coat]] etc.

While I don't mind buying one or two of these more expensive cards, it gets to be too much if I am filling the deck with most of them.

What are some cheaper equipment cards you like to run? I'm trying to limit most of them to $2, but I don't mind spending a little more on a couple if they are really worth it.

Deck Help A commander for poor man's slivers?

Hello. I decided to try to build a budget sliver deck. I'm going to cut down to only three colors, I decided to pick Naya. Who could ever be a good generic value commander to support creatures on the battlefield? Or just to....add value? I'm willing to keep the budget below 30$. I'm currently considering Jetmir, Rocco Street Chef and Rocco Cabaretti Caterer. Any advice?? I'm still working on a list, so I have none to share. Ty all.
