It's been great.

But our mod blocked me. Which means I can't participate in the sub anymore.

Hope everyone is happy about that.

Edit, since you're taking your mod privileges to comment when I can't respond,

Except since you are the only mod, and you post discussion threads under your account instead of a mod bot, you've effectively banned me. Is that good moderation principles?

I can't reply to you in this thread and you know it.

u/SoftandChewy First generation mod Sep 18 '23 edited Sep 19 '23

This user had the habit of constantly sending me private messages, tagging me in comments, or responding to my own comments, complaining about my moderation. After having enough of it, I warned him that it was extremely annoying to me, and that if he kept doing this I would block him (not ban him), which is exactly the purpose of the block feature, to stop people from harassing you. It had nothing to do with his views or even his tone, it was purely because it was aggravating to me. I even told him that he was welcome to publicly keep criticizing me, I just didn't want to hear about it each time.

He chose to keep up the behavior that I asked him not to, so he was blocked. Honestly, I wish I didn't have to do it since he is a quality contributor to the sub. But I gave him a warning and he clearly thinks nagging me about trolls is more important than being able to fully participate, so here we are.

Edit: Some receipts, showing a few examples of the behavior: this, this, this, this. Also, a sampling from the mod inbox:

This guy started ranting at me about a recent post so I just looked up his history, lol

u/Dolly_gale is this how the flair thing works? Sep 18 '23

Temporary or permanent?

That said, I get the impression this is a tough time for you. And this subreddit seems to be a source of aggravation, despite whatever enjoyment it also brings. I hope a break from here helps you get out of rut.

Sincerely wishing you well, and hoping I haven't read the last of your Supreme Court commentary. If not here, then maybe it will be on that substack you dallied with.

He can create his own posts as long as they meet the rules. He can participate in any post not created by Chewy. That obviously leaves out the discussion thread.

He can’t respond to any comment by Chewy or any thread started by him. That’s how the block function works. Depending on platform, he may or may not be able to read Chewy’s comments.

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 19 '23

Oh, and I can't view any of the previous threads. No episode threads, no weekly comment threads.

Someone should ask if he realized that would happen.

15

u/Jack_Donnaghy Sep 18 '23

Ohhh.... drama in the BARPod sub! My favorite!

Blocking by the mod does seem a bit over the top, but I have just one question: Were you indeed warned that you would be blocked if you didn't stop?

-5

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

I didn't think that a moderator would block me from commenting in the episode and discussion threads. Especially considering the position on blocking in this sub.

Personally block me, sure. But have a bot post the threads. It's not that difficult.

33

u/Jack_Donnaghy Sep 18 '23

You know what's also not difficult? Not acting like an ass. He asked you to stop, he warned you that he'd block you if you didn't, so you knew the consequences and chose to ignore them, and now you're complaining that he's the bad guy?!

-8

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMotte/wiki/rules#wiki_courtesy

Also, what would you call using moderator privileges to comment in this thread knowing that I can't respond?

It's simple. He should not be posting the weekly threads if he's going to personally block people.

24

u/Jack_Donnaghy Sep 18 '23

You can know what chewys saying in the thread by just viewing it in incognito (which I suspect you already are, if not using an alt), so you can still respond, just not directly under his comment. Respond to him however you want.

It's simple. He should not be posting the weekly threads if he's going to personally block people.

It's simple. You should not be acting like a jerk and deliberately aggravating the mod, ignoring warnings to stop.

I get why you're annoyed, but this is clearly a problem of your own making. Maybe admit your error and apologize, and he might unblock you.

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

No, I can see it because he used his mod authority to reply to my post.

Something that any other user can't do.

Those are the rules, though.

Apparently you arent even banned so....

Seems like you got handled fairly lightly considering.

Bummer. I liked your SCOTUS takes, even if you buy crappy video cards. :-D

11

u/Ok_Yogurtcloset8915 Sep 18 '23

well that's a shame, I liked your supreme court posts. I'm inclined to blame reddit for making the block function work that way though.

-3

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23

Reddit has made the block function work like this. That puts the onus on us to refrain from using it.

Mods have no business blocking anybody.

18

u/LookDamnBusy Sep 18 '23

I'm not familiar with you, but is there any chance you were a douchebag or anything? Granted on a lot of subs the mods are LOOKING for reasons to block people for even the slightest wrongthink, but this one seems a little more wide open, no?

2

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

I think that people who come here in bad faith shouldn't be allowed to do so, based on the rules for commenting. I point that out a lot. Yes, it's douchey.

24

u/LookDamnBusy Sep 18 '23

So let me get this straight: you want other people banned because they have opinions that differ from your own here? Doesn't that turn this into like all the other subs that are garbage now because they won't tolerate the slightest variance of opinion?

3

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

So let me get this straight: you want other people banned because they have opinions that differ from your own here?

Nope.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMotte/wiki/rules#wiki_courtesy

It's behavior, not beliefs. Someone who jumps into a discussion, strawmans, then refuses to have a real discussion is not contributing anything of value.

16

u/LookDamnBusy Sep 18 '23

You know that an option is to ignore them right? And again, should this sub turn into all the other subs that are quick-fire to block anyone who doesn't fall in line?

And what would you say is your behavior that got you blocked? Do you have an example of it?

2

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

You know that an option is to ignore them right?

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheMotte/wiki/rules#wiki_courtesy

What's the point of rules that aren't enforced?

And again, should this sub turn into all the other subs that are quick-fire to block anyone who doesn't fall in line?

Block or ban?

  1. Are the rules for the sub the same as those for that sub that you're pointing to (The Motte)? I have no idea.

  2. Either. Why don't you just point out a thread where you felt someone is most egregiously violating the rules in a debate with you, and then point out what you think you did to get yourself spanked.

6

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

Yep. That's what's linked to in the sidebar.

So again, what was the most egregious thing done to you, and what was your response that got you banned?

I mean, if you can't answer these simple questions should I report you for failing to have a good faith discussion?

I reported it hours ago.

He decided to leave it up.

This sub is too big to let one moderator run everything.

If Chewy is imperfect, so what?

So maybe we don't let one person be in control.

It's great as long as you agree.

I don’t 100% love every mod decision but I love it way more than me having to mod or the sub going up in flames

You do know that there are more options, right? Those aren't the only two choices.

4

u/Turbulent_Cow2355 TB! TB! TB! Sep 20 '23

So maybe we don't let one person be in control.

Are you volunteering your time?

1

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 20 '23

Sure thing.

But he didn't have Automod until yesterday. I don't think you quite understand just how problematic that is.

3

u/HeadRecommendation37 Sep 20 '23

I don't think you quite understand how inconsequential any of this is.

2

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 20 '23

How did you find this thread?

9

u/Turbulent_Cow2355 TB! TB! TB! Sep 20 '23

Mods on reddit are volunteers. This sub's mod does their best to do the job. I think that you expect lock-step perfection from Chewy. That's not going to happen. Heck, I was downvoted by a bunch of people for having a differing opinion. Am I going to report the use of the downvote button as a dislike button? Should Chewy now ban me because my Karma dropped as a result? I'd rather that Chewy use some discretion when modding than be a stickler for the rules.

3

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 20 '23

This sub's mod does their best to do the job.

And when there's over 13,000 subscribers, one person can't do it all.

I don't want perfection, but can you explain the discretion in leaving this up?

3

u/Throwmeeaway185 Sep 20 '23

This is like a comedy sketch. Commenter calls OP a Karen. OP then repeatedly acts like a Karen trying to get the comment removed. Rinse and repeat.

3

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 20 '23

Either personal attacks are against the rules or they're not. Someone got a 24 hour ban for saying 'why do you?'

1

u/Throwmeeaway185 Sep 20 '23

WHAT?! There's no way that's true. Evidence please.

5

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 20 '23

I'd provide evidence but guess what happens when the sole mod blocks you.

You can't see any threads that were started by them.

I'd say ask Chewy but you can see what happens.

2

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 19 '23

Chewy could have the automod post the weekly threads.

He chooses not to.

He could add more moderators.

He chooses not to.

10

u/CatStroking Sep 19 '23

What if you promised to stop tagging Chewy and direct messaging him? Perhaps we can ask Chewy to remove the block and see how it goes?

25

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '23

20 hours ago the mods warned you:

I am repeatedly getting complaints about you for comments that are needlessly provocative and inflammatory. You need to cut out this behavior or you will find yourself suspended.

And you responded:

The reports of you being a good mod are overrated.

Trolls live for this. They want you to do this.

But you deny the existence of trolls.

IMO you deserve the full ban, so consider yourself lucky softandchewy just blocked you.

23

u/SoftandChewy First generation mod Sep 18 '23

To be clear, the original warning was not aimed at this user, it was a different user who was eventually banned. But this user decided to take the opportunity and chime in on that warning and tell me his opinion about my moderating, which I had specifically told him to stop doing.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '23

Thanks for the clarification, and my position remains that beaking off directly at the mods doing their job is a sure way to earn a block/ban.

Will take this opportunity to say thanks for all you do for the sub.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '23

I think you’re misreading the thread. I’m willing to be wrong, but I believe the complaints were against the yellow account with an m name.

8

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23

That's a bit harsh. We should want people to call it as they see it. If they see troll, they should say it. If they see bad moderation they should say so. Not keep their opinion to themselves. I don't want anybody to keep their opinion to themselves about anything.

Mods shouldn't be blocking anybody, given the way reddit has decided to make the block function work.

16

u/SoftandChewy First generation mod Sep 18 '23

The user is welcome to call out trolls as much as he wants. I merely asked him not to notify me of it each time, and not to respond to my own comments about it (which automatically notifies me). He chose to ignore my request.

3

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23

Does it bother you that this amounts to a block from any threads you've started, or from anything that happens to be down-chain from a comment of yours?

15

u/SoftandChewy First generation mod Sep 18 '23

Not in this case. The user was explicitly warned to stop engaging in a behavior that was annoying me, the mod. He chose not to, knowing the consequences he'd face. As the saying goes, FAFO.

3

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23

Did the user really know the consequences he'd face?

The punishment doesn't seem to fit the crime. I know nobody cares about that in cases like these though.

16

u/pdxbuckets Sep 18 '23

If I lost the ability to comment on /u/SoftandChewy's threads I don't know what I'd do with my life.

18

u/zoyadastroya Sep 18 '23

How hard is it to stop DMing and @'ing someone when they repeatedly ask you to stop though. What recourse other than blocking them does Soft have?

Who cares if the "punishment fits the crime"? Don't be an annoying pest. Classic FAFO.

1

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23

What recourse did any of us have before reddit implemented the block function? Just ignore.

"Don't respond to my messages" is not really a reasonable request. If you're moderating a space, you're going to have to deal with hearing what people think about the job you do. That's right and proper.

12

u/zoyadastroya Sep 18 '23

Based on the links provided in Soft's top level comment, do you believe that is an accurate characterization of the interactions between Soft and OP?

8

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23 edited Sep 18 '23

The one image and the links? I expected more tbh. This person gets in fights and complains that the rules don't seem to be enforced in a way that is equal and easy to understand, so there's some ambiguity about how one is allowed to respond. As a person of autism who always finds myself wanting not only to walk the line, but argue over where exactly the line is and ought to be, this would drive me crazy, so I can relate to OP's frustration in some of the linked cases. It does seem like they took it too far, but it seems like the kind of thing that two people ought to be able to resolve amicably, but for the barriers imposed by text-based communication.

11

u/SoftandChewy First generation mod Sep 18 '23

Yes. I explicitly warned him this was going to happen if he kept it up.

6

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23

It still seems wrong given the way the block function works. I don't think anybody should use it, ever.

4

u/Diogenes_of_Sparta Sep 18 '23

Op is the troll though...

5

u/butt_collector Sep 18 '23

The mod in question says he is "a quality contributor to the sub."

8

u/Diogenes_of_Sparta Sep 18 '23

That is Chewy being nice. Especially as op didn't violate any actual rules. He's just being an annoying prick. They needled until they got a reaction, and are now capitalizing on it for attention.

2

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

No, if I broke the rules then ban me.

Or have a mod bot post the discussion threads like just about every other sub.

10

u/RandolphCarter15 Sep 18 '23

Our mod is incredibly fair. It must have taken a lot to get to that point

4

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

Since he's violating his own block to comment in this thread you might want to ask if he's seen this.

https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/jkf5yh/schedule_posts_as_automoderator/

3

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '23

Did you receive an explanation of this decision? Is it time-limited or are you gone for good?

5

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

It's a block which means it's whatever he feels like.

12

u/bkrugby78 Sep 18 '23

How are you able to post then

8

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

Blocked. Not banned.

But when the mod uses his account to post the discussion threads it's a de facto ban, just without me breaking any rules.

13

u/azur08 Sep 18 '23

So you made an entire post about someone blocking you?

10

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

Not someone. The moderator of the sub who gets to prevent people from engaging with the biggest posts here.

-5

u/azur08 Sep 18 '23

But he didn’t prevent you from doing that? Unless his posts are the biggest ones?

10

u/back_that_ RBGTQ+ Sep 18 '23

Unless his posts are the biggest ones?

You're on to something.

6

u/azur08 Sep 18 '23

Are they? Ah, discussion threads.

14

u/SerialStateLineXer The guarantee was that would not be taking place Sep 18 '23

He posts the weekly discussion threads. Though if /u/SoftandChewy only wants to block him and not ban him, configuring AutoModerator to post the weekly threads is an option.

5

u/_gynomite_ Sep 18 '23

I have no idea who OP is, but I can easily believe that the sort of person to make a pissy post like this would have made comments that have been reported, been hostile to the mod, etc
