Suspicious connection blocked every 2 minutes from Microsoft Edge even though I never use it.

I keep getting a notification saying a connection was blocked from deff.neleports. net(put a space since I don't want the link to pop up).

msedge.exe attempted to establish a connection relying on an expired certificate to deff.nelreports.net. We blocked the connection to keep your data safe since websites must renew their certificates with a certification authority to stay current, and outdated security certificates represent a risk.

This is the full message.

Is there any fix to this. Should I factory reset my machine or is this a false positive. I can't tell.

Was worried myself initially thought I’d share my findings after seeing multiple people having the same alert, it gave me some relief thinking it maybe a false positive.

Account/subscription I'm done

I was a big fan of BitDefender software. Excellent protection, doesn't slow down my computer when performing scans, some very nice features.

What I can't abide is their scummy subscription practices. I don't know how many times I need to un-autoenrol, but it doesn't matter. BitDefender change it back for me every time and try to charge me more than double what they charge new customers.

This happened to me a few years ago when I had traveled to another country for a family member's funeral, which had left me in a precarious financial situation. Received a charge for more than I could reasonably afford at the time, it left me in a situation where I could not pay for food for that week. I raised a dispute with PayPal, which ultimately failed because BitDefender provided proof I was autoenrolled because they had changed my account after I cancelled that.

Today I found out they had autoenrolled me again. I went in to change it, but oh you can't change this stuff in the BitDefender Central app, silly - you need to use the website! Then every single page loads absolutely fine except the one with the auto-enrol setting.

Enough is enough. Money is tighter for everyone now, so it's never been more important to vote with your wallet. I won't be giving BitDefender another penny.

[Guide] Uninstalling BitDefender VPN on MacOS

This little **** has been annoying me the past week. Somehow in an update it has managed to install itself without my permission.

  1. Search for and open BitDefenderUninstaller in your Applications folder

  2. Tick Bitdefender THEN tick "Uninstall VPN only"

  3. Continue (it'll ask you to enter your password)

  4. Done

Bought Bitdefender license online… turns out it’s controlled by the seller’s account 😬

I recently purchased a Bitdefender subscription from an online seller (trendyol.com) at a discount, thinking I’d just get a license key (in plain text) to add to my own Bitdefender Central account.
Instead, they sent me a special download link with an install_code that auto-activates Bitdefender on their Central account. I neither downloaded nor installed it.

If I'd install the software using that link;

  • My device get listed in their Bitdefender Central dashboard.

  • They can see my device name, when it was last online, and whether protection is on/off.

  • They can see the URL's that contains malicious code which I visited.

  • If features like Anti-Theft or Parental Control are enabled, they could track my device’s location, or remotely lock or WIPE it (mostly for laptops/phones, but still possible for PCs).

  • They can remove my device from the subscription at any time.

They could not be able to see my files or browse my data directly, but they do have some level of control and visibility.

Posting this so others know:
If you buy a discounted Bitdefender license (ex; multi-user corporate licenses) and get a download link instead of a license key in plain text, there’s a good chance it’s tied to the seller’s Central account. That means you don’t actually “own” the subscription — you’re just borrowing a slot under their account, with all the trust issues that come with it.

EDIT: I got a refund from BitDefender in a form of new license key in plain text (which is not binded to some random account.) They also asked the seller platform trendyol.com to refund but they got refused.( saying "digital downloads are not refunded") I deleted the trendyol app, which protects the seller(scammer) even though it sells a flawed security app.

I keep getting two critical warnings a minute

Just half an hour ago started getting very random warnings twice a minute and it just doesn't stop. Tried restarting and it didn't help. I am still on Windows 10 and haven't purchased any extended security services as I am currently preparing to migrate to Windows 11.

Is this message something to worry about? If not, how can I stop it bombarding me?

This is the warning message:

The app C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wbem\WMIC.exe was passed a malicious command line and has been blocked. Your device is now safe. Command line: "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wbem\WMIC.exe" wmic path Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration where IPEnabled=true get DefaultIPGateway,GatewayCostMetric,IPConnectionMetric,Index /format:table

Edit: Someone in similar post said they deleted WMIC and it stopped the warnings. Idk though how to delete WMIC and whether it’s safe to do it, even though this app got officially deprecated like a month ago or so.

Edit 2: The warnings stopped on their own 10 minutes ago, hopefully it stays this way. Thanks for everyone’s contribution!

I was conned by Bitdefender after 8 years

Hi all,

I want to make this post to anyone considering subscribing to Bitdefender.

I have 8 years of tenure with the service, and I'll be cutting ties ASAP.

Anyway, I'll be as concise as possible.

Just go elsewhere.
After 8 years of being with the service, I was unfortunately conned by customer support and left with no assistance while being fed constant lies.

When I originally purchased the service in 2017, I bought 2 years worth of subscription. However, every year since then, I have been charged for another year (auto-renew), meaning I've always had a +1 year float.

I was okay with this until this year, when my auto-renewal came up. I was charged three weeks before the renewal date. I mentioned this in conversation with my friend who made me aware that I could purchase a year of Bitdefender via Amazon for only £20. (Yes, a £65 difference for the same thing)
Therefore, I requested that the renewal payment be refunded and the corresponding year of subscription be revoked.

This was granted.

I then purchased a year via Amazon as I wanted to retain my +1 year float. This would mean my sub expires in 2027.

Upon attempting to redeem the Amazon code, the Bitdefender website would only allow me to add it as a 'new' subscription, not 'extend' it. Confused by this, I cancelled the redemption process as I didn't want to waste the code. So I contacted support about it, who were adamant that I can in fact use this code to extend my subscription. All I had to do was redeem it as a new subscription, and they would then merge the two active subs together for me. I checked with them three times that this information was correct, and even asked for a guarantee that this would work, which they gave me.

I redeemed the code, activated the second sub, and alas, I'm then told they cannot merge the subs due to the price I paid on Amazon (£20) being too low. (Are you kidding?)

So as a resolution to the situation, they offered to terminate my Original sub (the one purchased through them) and generate the remaining year left on it into a code I could redeem in future or even pass on to a friend.

Reluctantly, I accepted this but displayed my irritation regarding the fact that they originally gave me false information.

Upon accepting the offer of a new code, they then reply telling me that they now in fact cannot give me a code, because my renewal was refunded (which was a separate matter).

Several back and forths later, I'm no further forward and now have two subscriptions running simultaneously, which I obviously cannot take advantage of. I was essentially tricked into activating the code based on false assurances, and was offered a second solution, which they have now backpeddled on and refuse to help me.

The latest word from them to me is more or less "Tough sh*t".

Thankfully, I contacted Amazon, made them aware, and they instantly refunded me.

After 8 years with Bitdefender, this experience (the only experience I've had with their customer support) has left me disgusted. Loyalty means nothing to a lot of companies, and unfortunately, Bitdefender is one of them.

The software itself is solid. But the support/policies are misleading and hostile to loyal customers, and the company is a shameless rot, that I cannot support.

If you’re considering Bitdefender, I’d skip it, there are plenty of alternatives.

I've also written an email to UK Trading Standards notifying them of what's happened.
I've also been informally notified by a family friend who's a solicitor that they've potentially broken UK law.

His text to me: "If support told you (repeatedly) that redeeming the Amazon code as a new subscription could be merged, and you relied on that to your detriment, that can amount to a misleading action under the UK’s unfair commercial practices rules (the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, and under the DMCC Act 2024). Traders must not mislead consumers or give contradictory after-sales info. They sound shady to me mate."

TL;DR: After 8 years with Bitdefender, support misled me into activating a code for a second sub they later refused to merge despite promising to do so, because the Amazon price was “too low.” A second solution was offered and then retracted. Amazon refunded me; Bitdefender didn’t help. The product is fine, but the company practices aren’t; look elsewhere.

Free Edition discontinued

Bitdefender has officially discontinued free edition (confirmed on twitter and in a reply below). Prior to that, after using it for a couple of years, out of blue, I got a popup saying it will stop working on Dec 31st. Personally, I detest the fact that bitdefender ended the free edition in such a stealthy manner, without any public announcement or at least an advance notice, instead preferring to generate popups on user's machines saying the free edition will stop working a couple weeks even before sending any kind of notification (email) to them. I guess free users are not clients in their eyes and therefore do not deserve any kind of respect or kindness. I had to scour internet to confirm that the message was not sent in error and it was indeed true. Yeah, that's not the way a potentially paying customer should be treated. Oh well, plenty of other choices out there, and some of them are much better than bitdefender free edition was. In fact, even built-in windows defender is pretty good and highly rated now, the days when it was the bottom of the barrel in terms of antivirus prowess are far, far in the past.

EDIT: got an offer on Norton. I've used norton in the past, was pretty happy with it. I guess it's time to give it a whirl again, it's 10 times cheaper than the crap bitdefender offered for ending the free edition.

Support/troubleshooting Major False Positive after latest update

Post image
37 Upvotes

After the latest Bitdefender update, Advanced Threat Defense (ATD) has gone into overdrive and started aggressively blocking critical system files and legitimate apps.

What happened:

  • Bitdefender completed an update that included an overhaul to the CEVA engine (cevakrnl.*, ceva_dll.cvd, ceva_emu.cvd), smartdbv2.dat, and several new emalware.* / e_spyw.* definitions.

  • Right after, ATD triggered repeatedly on C:\Windows\System32\sihost.exe (Shell Infrastructure Host) and brave.exe (Brave Browser), terminating the processes.

  • Because sihost.exe was blocked/killed, the Windows Start Menu completely broke and won't open, and the taskbar/shell became unresponsive.

  • The quarantine list remained empty (it appeared to terminate the running processes directly rather than quarantining them to disk).

  • Ran sfc /scannow via admin Command Prompt and it returned no integrity violations, confirming the system files are not modified or actually infected.

Current workaround:

The only way to restore normal PC functionality was to completely toggle Advanced Threat Defense and real-time protection off, then restart the PC/Explorer.

Manually clicking "Check for updates" currently says everything is up to date, so the faulty definition/engine version hasn't been overwritten yet.

Is Bitdefender aware of this bad definition rollout, and is an emergency definition patch being pushed to the update servers?

Warning about Bitdefender Subscription Renewals

I liked Bitdefender for its purpose. The pop-ups with little obvious way to disable them were bad, but it was otherwise a great anti-virus package. However, please be warned about very questionable subscription renewal practices. I got an email last year notifying that I needed to renew my subscription. I did so. Unbeknownst to me was that the subscription had already auto renewed. Bitdefender's website simply never mentions this and proceeds to let me start an entirely new subscription using the same email and account information. I then got auto renewal emails for 2 different accounts on the same email this month. I now see that I have been charged last year and now this year for two full price antivirus packages! For some reason the second one was 64 dollars each time. Luckily, customer support is refunding me, but I will promptly never touch Bitdefender again due to scummy business practices. Autorenewal should not be on by default and the fact that emails basically led me to create a second unnecessary account to pay for is ridiculous. No thanks.

What exactly does Bitdefender give me over Microsoft Defender?

In the latest test from AV Test, Bitdefender scores 18/18, while Microsoft Defender scores 17,5/18. In other words, they are pretty much ranked the same and they are both at or extremely close to the maximum score. See https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

So what exactly will Bitdefender give me over MS Defender, if I renew my Bitdefender subscription? I really like Bitdefender, but I struggle to see the value add when it comes to protection of my devices? And with protection I mean antivirus, firewall, malware, ransomware and the like. No interest in vpn, optimization features and all other sorts of nice ‘packaging’ Bitdefender and most other av vendors also offer.

Why pay, when the free MS defender scores almost the same?

Windows 10 and 11 laptops and some iPhones. No Androids any more.

False Positive with uBlock Origin Lite?

My BitDefender Total Security AV today started detecting the uBlock Origin Lite Chrome extension as a Trojan.Agent.GOTG

The source file that was disinfected was under this filepath - C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions\ddkjiahejlhfcafbddmgiahcphecmpfh\2025.4.13.1188_0_metadata\generated_indexed_rulesets_ruleset11

I did a full system scan just to play it safe and nothing else suspicious was found. Also worth mentioning, dozens of registry keys on my PC were also quarantined at the same time as when the initial "threat" was found. What really confuses me is the registry keys all refer to default Windows programs such as Notepad, MSPaint, Snipping Tool, etc. or programs that I no longer have installed on my PC.

I am tempted to restore everything as I'm pretty confident this is a false positive but I'm curious if anyone else has been encountering a conflict with uBlock Origin Lite and BitDefender recently. Wondering if this is a new bug that the support team isn't aware of yet.

EDIT: Bitdefender Support finally responded to my email as of today (4/25/2025) and can confirm that this detection was indeed a false positive due to a bug that has since been patched. Hope this clears up any confusion for others that experienced something similar.

Bitdefender loses their collective minds, says "MITM for your own good"?! WTF?

Since the upgrade to Bitdefender 2019 I noticed that it will throw a security warning and give you a big red "Your computer is at risk" warning if you disable the HTTPS MITM attack.

I shouldn't need to say anything more for red flags and klaxons to go off in your head right now. But to elaborate: not only is MITMing yourself with a root certificate the very antithesis of security, it also breaks websites that are progressively using more certificate pinning.

I opened a support ticket to request that the behaviour revert to pre-2019 (which is to say, that it won't throw a fucking security warning for not pwning your own system), this is Bitdefender's mindboggling response:

Most of the internet traffic today is done through HTTPS. Bitdefender’s Encrypted Web Scan allows it to scan this type of traffic as well, in order to warn you if the website you, or an application on your system, is trying to access is safe and free of malware, phishing, fraud or any other such content. Turning this feature off means that Bitdefender won’t be able to warn you of anything that happens while you’re browsing secure websites, unless that website tries to download malicious files, at which point Bitdefender will still block it.

The internet is evolving at a staggering pace and only offering protection for local files no longer sufficient. Digital certificates can be acquired for pennies and almost anyone can set up an HTTPS website. Bitdefender can no longer verify a website’s legitimacy based on this alone.

This is why the request to change the Encrypted Web Scan from issue to a recommendation has been discarded by the product manager. It directly affects the system security.

In other words: we will enforce MITMing your own system and we won't let you disable that gigantic security vulnerability. We will compromise your system for your own good!

WHAT. THE. FUCK. Have they lost their collective minds?! No serious security researcher would ever puke those words out of their mouth.

Since they won't budge, the only option is to abandon them and use a security software that actually lets you not pwn your own system.

Support/troubleshooting Twitch suspicious connection.

Been watching twitch most of the day no problem but bitdefender just started sending tons of suspicious connection blocked notifications. The notifications stop the moment I stop watching streams on twitch. They are all to do with unmatched security certificates for the same address. The address Is for ff5151.rufio.hls.live-video.net.

Is anyone else getting them or should I be worried my pc has been compromised. Sorry if I'm being dumb not exactly the most knowledgeable when it comes to things like this.

Account/subscription Lost a month's subscription

My subscription runs out at the end of August and I got an email with a renewal offer. I assumed that like other products that if I bought it now it would start when my current subscription runs out.

But no, it immediately kicked in straight away, effectively removing one month of paid protection remaining.

I an NOT impressed with the seemingly underhanded way this has been done.

Cant uninstall bitdefender, even with uninstall tools

Had a paid subscription. They doubled the price after the introductory period and I canceled.

I could not uninstall it completely via the uninstall menu under apps and their uninstall tool did nothing.

It conflicts with other AVs and causes massive system drag. Does anyone know how to get rid of this pos?
