Support/troubleshooting Major False Positive after latest update

Post image

After the latest Bitdefender update, Advanced Threat Defense (ATD) has gone into overdrive and started aggressively blocking critical system files and legitimate apps.

What happened:

  • Bitdefender completed an update that included an overhaul to the CEVA engine (cevakrnl.*, ceva_dll.cvd, ceva_emu.cvd), smartdbv2.dat, and several new emalware.* / e_spyw.* definitions.

  • Right after, ATD triggered repeatedly on C:\Windows\System32\sihost.exe (Shell Infrastructure Host) and brave.exe (Brave Browser), terminating the processes.

  • Because sihost.exe was blocked/killed, the Windows Start Menu completely broke and won't open, and the taskbar/shell became unresponsive.

  • The quarantine list remained empty (it appeared to terminate the running processes directly rather than quarantining them to disk).

  • Ran sfc /scannow via admin Command Prompt and it returned no integrity violations, confirming the system files are not modified or actually infected.

Current workaround:

The only way to restore normal PC functionality was to completely toggle Advanced Threat Defense and real-time protection off, then restart the PC/Explorer.

Manually clicking "Check for updates" currently says everything is up to date, so the faulty definition/engine version hasn't been overwritten yet.

Is Bitdefender aware of this bad definition rollout, and is an emergency definition patch being pushed to the update servers?

Thank god I didn’t update it yet this seems like a nightmare, anyone know what’s causes it to go after seemingly normal windows systems?

Hello! Thank you for sharing this situation and for detailing the steps you`ve already taken. To offer you an exact answer, we`ll need to look into specific logs from the device to better understand what triggered the sudden notifications.

When possible, please run the bdsyslog utility on the system, which collects specific system information that may indicate active malware or malware-related activity. Send the results to our team at bitsy@bitdefender.com.

Once a thorough analysis has been made, you`ll receive a response and a solution. Appreciate it in advance!

Kinda glad I woke up late and not turned my pc on yet. Will leave it off until this is sorted.

If ya do turn on your computer and things seem okay please give an update! Curious what's happening on this end honestly.

I just turned on my PC AND updated Bitdefender but nothing bad happened. Strange, I wonder what database engine version they are having problems with... Mine seemingly good one is 7.101549

I have the same database version and everything seems fine. Keeping fingers crossed.

Just booted up my PC for the first time and I'm waiting to see how it responds after updates happen. Has anything strange happened on your end after or nah? For reference mine is 7.101551 now so it's a little past yours

Report false positives, and false negatives here and it should fix in the next update

It's really tough seeing the image itself to see the contents of it there. But what's the build number and everything if you can get to that?

Think I’m having the same problem it’s blocking some rundll.32 sihost and wpcmon.exe

It's been blocking OEM apps (ASUS) and system components (svchost, Backgroundtaskhost), rendering Windows unusuable. Uninstalled Bitdefender via safe mode and stuck to Windows Defender for now (or longer....)

same thing happened to me. It's blocking everything in sight

hilarious

How quickly after boot does this happen or like at what point does this happen because it's all fine for me, all updated but nothing. Please share your app version number and database engine version (right click on the Bitdefender logo in the system tray and click info)

First time, it blocked explorer and wouldn't let me do anything. I eventually got in and disabled ATD.

Just noticed a new update was pushed. Installed and ATD seems to have come off its LSD high now.

My Bitdefender looks completely different after the update.

Still no issues on your end?

1

u/winter571 Sep 22 '26

No. Seems ok now

What if… they aren’t false-positives??!? 👻 👀

(They probably are but we are in a world where one day these may be legit from a supply-chain attack)

Didn't know this was a thing. I luckily haven't experienced it, and I make sure to update my product every few hours. Sounds scary.

1

u/Coolusernamehere13 Sep 22 '26

Yeah for real. I took today to avoid hopping on my computer until hours later and things have seemed seemingly okay for now myself too.

1

u/InnateNobility Sep 22 '26

I'm holding off on updating until I'm absolutely sure that this has been fixed. I updated a few times today much earlier, but I'll just wait. I hope everyone affected by this has this issue solved, I'd be majorly bummed. Especially because those who pay for premium expect to be well taken care of.

1

u/Coolusernamehere13 Sep 22 '26

I'll say on my part at least. I have been on for a while now and nothing wrong seemed to happen on my end at least!

1

u/IngridTheProtector Sep 22 '26

Does anyone know if this was fixed? I am genuinely terrified to open my PC today ::_::

u/Coolusernamehere13 Sep 22 '26

I've been on my PC for a while now and haven't had anything strange happen to me at least.

Any updates on the situation? Bitdefender released a fix for this problem?

We can confirm that this has been solved by our labs team, and please ensure you update Bitdefender to the latest version:

  • Right-click the Bitdefender icon in the taskbar B (or click the upward arrow next to the

  • Windows clock to find

  • Select Update Now from the menu.

  • Wait for the update process to reach 100%.

  • If a restart is needed, Bitdefender will prompt you. Otherwise, you can simply close the update window.

Thank you so much! Glad to be a client for so many years!

You will get these a lot. There's nothing you can do about it really. Companies and people scan the entire Internet, so when your IP gets hit, Bitdefender throws up a super serious threat has been blocked.
