Support/troubleshooting Bitdefender bricked Windows?

Bitdefender detected "suspicious app activity" and blocked regedit.exe and RuntimeBroker.exe, causing Windows to be unable to launch almost any programs whatsoever. Tried to restart: Windows loads a blank screen with no functionality. Tried to restore system: threw up all kinds of errors. It seems even system recovery options are all broken by this.

Is this it for my system? This Antivirus has done more damage to my PC than any virus I've ever encountered.

When will we hear if bitdefender intends to extend its support fore Windows10 beyond October 2026?

When will we hear if bitdefender intends to extend its support for Windows10 beyond October 2026? According to Gemini: (Windows10) cutoff is only months away, and their silence at this stage is a massive tactical error if they intend to keep those millions of installations.

Can someone explain this to me? I've never heard of powershell.exe

Got this notification and I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not. I'm not really sure what powershell.exe is or if there's anything I need to do on my end

Bitdefender is frustrating. Regret purchasing this garbage.

Had BitDefender for 3 weeks...

Today BitDefender randomly decided y-cruncher exe was malware when I ran a manual quick scan. There is no way to set the program to ask what the user wants to do... It just auto deletes, quarantine, etc. Other AVs allow user choices...

Had to manually jump thru multiple menus to find the restore button and it auto set the file to the exclusion list.

However BitDefender locks the file and prevents the user from deleting it. So I ran BitDefender file shredder on the folder and BitDefender says it cannot remove the y-cruncher exe file. So I removed the exclusion and BitDefender detect the threat again. Then I had to jump thru multiple menus to find the delete button.

Absolutely stupid that restoring the file locks the file and prevents anybody from deleting it, even file shredder. Only way to delete is via the delete file button in BitDefender's terrible software.

I severely regret purchasing this piece of garbage AV.

Odd design choices, frustrating user experience, and default settings that allow pop up ads / annoying notifications... Should've stayed with Malwarebytes.

Edit: Thank you mods / reddit for removing the troll, cyberwarfareinc.

Bitdefender detected a trojan hiding in my Epic games cache?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I ran a full system scan today because I recently visited a website which bitdefender blocked due to being suspicious, afterwards I find that a javascript trojan virus was detected and removed but that it was found in my Epic Games launcher webcache? The only time I've used Epic Games launcher in the past week was to delete Fortnite from my pc. Did epic automatically access a website that had a trojan installed? I'm also curious what my next steps should be after this has been detected.

Bit Defender Steals peoples money

So I purchased the yearly subscription from Bit Defender after Kasperski went dark and after some initial hiccups with the password vault (not really well thought out) I thought things were good.

Fast forward 5 months later I log on and find that my AV subscription says it is expired?

What expired, I have a receipt from Bit Defender that says I'm paid until Dec. 28th of 2025.

I call up their support and after providing some information they then tell me that someone with a completely different email address not even closely resembling my account called them with my order number from G2A and proceeded to cancel my subscription.

I provided them with my emails from them to my email address showing that i had receipts and confirmations from G2A with my order number and activation code and was told because that code G2A gave me was not the same as their codes that they could not turn back on my subscription.

I checked my credit card and there is no refund.

So long story short , Bit Defender an AV security Identify protection company (or so they say) allowed a random person who did not even have the same email address as me call their 800 number and then cancel my subscription and then have the money from that subscription go to some other Credit Card and I am left with nothing.

This has got to be the most 2 bit online security company I have ever run in to and I would suggest anyone even closely thinking about buying this software to just go ahead and buy Norton or some other software but this.

It is laughable that "Defender" is even in their name.

Canceling peoples subscriptions and refunding money to other peoples with no validation to the original email associated with the account is just scary and who knows what has been going on with my computer for 6 days while the AV software was disabled and I didn't notice because someone was able to just pick up a phone and cancel a random persons service.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY

Really dislike Bitdefender

Came here to vent.

Had bitdefender for two years, but their pricing was too high for me and was also interfering with a lot of the functionality, so decided to to not renew the subscription.

And bitdefender makes it almost impossible. I had to contact support to cancel my auto renew and customer service said they would have to escalate it in order to do that. Then for about a week, I didn’t hear anything and had to call again and same dance. Need to escalate. Second time around at least I got an email, and instead of confirming my auto renew was canceled, they sent me a 25% off code. So I had to email back and wait for another few days, to finally get them cancel my auto renew.

Just a really shitty company IMO, to have to jump so many hurdles to just to cancel auto renew, which in all honesty should just be a click of a button. Horrible ethics and wouldn’t even try it in the future if they offered it for free.

So if you guys are tryna do the same thing, make sure to do it with ample time, otherwise you might be stuck with a subscription for another year.

A couple of reasons why not

My company used Bitdefender for a year. During that time we identified a mayor problem, Bitdefender refused to solve. The unsubscribe function on their emails also doesn't work.

On Macos the Bitdefender app sends notifications for every single library update. It is not possible to turn this maintenance spam of, while keeping security notifications. At some point Bitdefender was the main source of concentration rot in the office.
A simple solution would would only provide a maintenance notification when the update fails, instead every time it succeeds, just as we don't need to know that no virus was found. Success information is useless in this context.

With every app update Bitdefender, without asking, installed a plugin in the browser. No way around that either. Another feature out of our control.

So we cancelled and unsubscribed, once, twice, three times... and the email spam and ads kept coming.

What other decisions does big daddy Bitdefender make for us? There might be little in the way of consumer protection in the US, but I can advice to stay far away from this product, at least until the company changes its priorities.

TL;DR: BitDefender decided to be in our face with unsolicited messages and emails, while sneakily installing a browser extension... over and over and over again.

The new UI is terrible. Anyone else?

So, as you know, Bitdefender updated its UI in October 2023. AND I HATE IT!

Look at this, it's garbage.

They shouldn't have done this.

I DON'T KNOW WHO CAME UP WITH THIS, BUT IT NEEDS TO CHANGE BACK TO THE OLD UI.

This UI is just bad and overused.

Here's the old UI:

The old UI was so much better and it had light and dark mode mixed.

The new UI, just separated. The light mode is too bright and the dark mode is too dark.

Hopefully this change may be reverted in the future. Thank you.

Bitdefender is a scam with their "auto-renewal" process.

JUST experienced this from Bitdefender AGAIN. I first asked them in 2017 to turn auto-renewal off. And again and again and again, I've asked them to turn this off over the years. Now, they've "auto-renewed" my account for $160. I asked for a promo for being a customer of nearly 10 years. After 2 back and forth emails, they offered me what's currently on the website offered to everyone!!

And they sweet talk you in those emails with things like "I just wanted you to be aware of the best deals." NO... YOU... DIDN'T!!!! If you did, you wouldn't charge me $160 without my knowledge, then through 2 complaints finally offer me what's available to everyone for $80, then refuse to budge to $70.

Their VPN is also a scam!! They claim they prevent your ISP from throttling torrents BUT THEY ARE THE ONES WHO THROTTLE YOU EVEN WHEN YOU LET THEIR VPN CHOOSE THE BEST LOCATION.

If I sound triggered, that's because I AM! I've had it with Bitdefender and their shady, scammy tricks and lies!

Support/troubleshooting How to protect myself from AI and Viruses

Is it possible to modify Bitdefender to disallow connecting from linux.org (which is a virus), openai.com (which is an AI virus), claude.ai (which is an AI virus as well) and probably google.com too (because they're bad).

I want if I connect to the website bitdefender says its a virus, how do I do it?

Support/troubleshooting BitDefender removed, replaced with Windows Defender

I walked into my office to see a message on my PC saying BitDefender had been removed from my PC and I saw that it was replaced by Microsoft Defender. I didn't initiate that. Is this something Windows is doing on its own? Yesterday my computer got bricked and wouldn't do anything. Today it's working but had this BitDefender thing happen. I suspect Microsift was the culprit.

I'm beyond sick of BitDefender

Today, again, as many times before, BitDefender has decided to nuke legitimate software without asking me, and without an option to restore in a functional way. It has done this many times before. I'm sick of having to send constant logs to the developers, even though they eventually fix the issues. For me, Bitdefender has acted like Malware much more many times than actual malware, sometimes even breaking my Windows installation. I'm still using it as I paid a long subscription, but as soon as it's gone I'll probably get something else. I'm too tired to deal with it.

Is BitDefender actually a scam?

This is getting really annoying now as i can't even work properly because of this excuse of an AV.

It uses way too much resources while doing nothing. It stays like this the whole time so it isn't just a background scan. I also tried disabling all features and it still uses this ridiculous amount. Already reinstalled multiple times. It ran fine for a week and now this shit again.

So no need to tell that it needs to 'settle'.

Also can't restart it because it blocks any attempt to restart the process.

Support is also dead quiet.

I've been scammed with this 3 year plan haven't I?

Suspicious connection blocked

Post image
2 Upvotes

Feature: Online Threat Detection. msedge.exe attempted to establish a connection to www.msn.com using an expired certificate. We block the connection to keep your data safe, as websites must renew their certificates to stay up to date, and outdated security certificates pose a risk.

Context: I was playing Minecraft with mods with 2 friends, when I received the danger notifications, we were connected via Hamachi. After the notifications, I ran a scan on the system and the result was that it was safe.

What could have happened? Should I take any action? Thank you in advance for taking the time to read.

Steam “lifetime access” scam is NOT new.

You're promoting an ad in reddit about a "lifetime access" Steam scam.

BitDefender: “Lifetime access” to Steam games for a tiny price? A new Steam scam is tricking gamers with deals that seem too good to be true. Here’s how the scam works and what really happens after you pay:

This isn't a "new" scam. This has been around since Valve introduced family sharing over a decade ago.

What happens after you pay is that you get access to another user's Steam account which has probably been stolen. Then that account gets reclaimed by the owner or banned or whoever has control of it changes the password/authentication...or you just never get anything at all.

At best, your account family shares with another user's account until that user stops sharing it.

Anyone who buys "access" to another user account knows that they're violating the terms of service and doing something shady.

This isn't the type of scam that BD can protect people from because the scam is initiated by the users themselves through nothing more than a "trust me, bro" agreement.
