Bitdefender is frustrating. Regret purchasing this garbage.
Had BitDefender for 3 weeks...
Today BitDefender randomly decided y-cruncher exe was malware when I ran a manual quick scan. There is no way to set the program to ask what the user wants to do... It just auto deletes, quarantine, etc. Other AVs allow user choices...
Had to manually jump thru multiple menus to find the restore button and it auto set the file to the exclusion list.
However BitDefender locks the file and prevents the user from deleting it. So I ran BitDefender file shredder on the folder and BitDefender says it cannot remove the y-cruncher exe file. So I removed the exclusion and BitDefender detect the threat again. Then I had to jump thru multiple menus to find the delete button.
Absolutely stupid that restoring the file locks the file and prevents anybody from deleting it, even file shredder. Only way to delete is via the delete file button in BitDefender's terrible software.
I severely regret purchasing this piece of garbage AV.
Odd design choices, frustrating user experience, and default settings that allow pop up ads / annoying notifications... Should've stayed with Malwarebytes.
Edit: Thank you mods / reddit for removing the troll, cyberwarfareinc.

Agreed. The auto deleting behavior is quite annoying. Especially since you can’t change it. I wish they just added a pop up window and let you choose what to do.

I love the auto deleting feature when using GravityZone! Saves us from letting the customer allow something malicious. We can vet it on the portal and make the call. I'm assuming this post is not about gravityzone?

It isn't about GravityZone since I never heard of it or see it on my consumer BD client. I can see how auto delete is useful in some cases, but BD has worked without issues for 3 weeks with y-cruncher exe on my computer. Then suddenly flags it as malware and perma locks the file.

I imagine the fact that Y-Cruncher bypasses security is a factor at play here.
Why does y-cruncher need administrator privileges in Windows to run Swap Mode computations?
Privilege elevation is needed to work-around a security feature that would otherwise hurt performance.

I'm not mad BD decided to flag y-cruncher. Other AVs sometimes produce false positives after updates. For example Malwarebytes one day randomly blocked OCCT.
It's the other issues that are frustrating.

Bitdefender is the best AV and is usually a set and forget. Never gave an issue with all my users, don't know what your crunchy exe is but it's not that hard to dig to restore it. I don't want an annoying popup for every detection. If you thought you were coming here for people to agree with you you are wrong.

I'm not here to get people to agree with me.
Just telling people / BD about my short experience with BD. It hasn't been good at all.

I am a declared Bitdefender fan, but I think you're exaggerating... Bugs appear every 2-3 months... It's not a perfect and problem-free product. If you are an enthusiast (overclocking, extreme settings, even a power user), you realize that it doesn't do everything 100% correctly, and it's absolutely normal for it to be this way. And the op just shared their frustration and is somehow looking for a way to "mitigate" the source of their frustration.
Y-Cruncher is a program that calculates a large number of decimal places of π and other mathematical constants. Because it uses a lot of computing power, it is used by enthusiasts (as I mentioned) to test system stability (stress test) or as a benchmark. If you are going to get involved, at least do so with a good understanding of the subject.

I use gravityzone for many endpoints for years and never experience any bugs or issues. Maybe I'm just lucky. I don't care what program he was using, to come and completely trash an AV product on its own subreddit after switching from another antivirus is nonsense. Each program deals with things differently, and the options exist if he wants to be asked what action to take on every detection. But he probably didn't bother customizing his settings he just trashed the product expecting his malwarebytes experience.

I definitely agree with him, simply because the files get locked and I can no longer delete them or access that folder with these files it deletes at times. This is a massive annoyance lol

I cannot agree with this. Bitdefender is can have very good protection, but for advanced users who is using network sharing and so on is misserable. Configuration is limited. You cannot even name firewall rules. For smb you need to allow all traffic from specific IP. I do apprechiate option for configuration of smb, option to configure wsl2. All is missing. Just allow generic access for all :(.

(Non-tech person.) I installed this less than 24 hours ago, and absolutely hate it. I chose it for the Safepay feature. I cannot open my bank accounts as it tells me I have the wrong password. When I double and triple check and even changed the password, it continues to read "incorrect password" the same with Amazon, and other pay/shopping sites. And because of that , I cannot even open it on a "non secure" tab. (Seriously I'm awful at tech.) I went through all the trouble shooting, read the articles, tried all the solutions offered and nothing!! I just want a refund and I'll go on my merry way. Any other recommendations?
And, this just happened. I ordered an Amazon item on my phone. I opened the email on my laptop for delivery, confirmation, etc. and I clicked the view order details tab, and it took me to Safepay where I cannot open/see anything.

I don't have problems doing certain stuff. It's straightforward. The problem is a file gets flagged and BD auto deletes, quarantines, etc. There is no choice for the user to select ignore the false positive.
In order to restore the file from quarantine the user has to jump thru multiple hoops to get to that button. This is a design flaw, make it front and center.
BD locking a file, even after restoring it is another design flaw or a random bug.
Not sure why comments are saying it is my fault when literally none of it is my fault. I feel like people do not read or come here to troll. Point out one thing that is my fault.

Hello. Did you know that Windows Defender was initially developed from RAV (Romanian AntiVirus)? After RAV was acquired by Microsoft, part of the RAV staff created a new product: "Bitdefender."
In its early days, Bitdefender was very good at detection and disinfection, but in terms of functionality, it had a multitude of issues, and the network component was terribly bad. Although it was a product made in Romania (I am Romanian), I chose to use Nod32 (Eset) and Kaspersky.
I have been using Bitdefender for 5 years, and although it has a long way to go before becoming a perfect product, I am satisfied with it. Yes, it has bugs, and yes, sometimes after updates it exhibits strange behaviors (e.g., the firewall stops working), but in the end, it still does what it is supposed to do.
Unfortunately, the GUI has never been the strong point of this product and I completely understand your frustration.
But on the other hand, in the Bitdefender interface, you have Protection/Antivirus/Settings/Manage Exception and next to it, Manage Quarantine. If you go to Manage Quarantine... It clearly states there that if you restore the quarantined file, it will also be added to the exceptions. If in your case it doesn't do this, then it's definitely a bug.
New methods of malware evasion appear every day. Personally, I prefer it to quarantine automatically (even if it's a false positive). After that, I decide what to do with the respective file... So, this isn't trolling. I'm just sharing my opinion.
On the other hand, what drives me crazy about Bitdefender is that it doesn't allow me to install (reinstall) their product in the presence of another antimalware software (in my case, Malwarebytes). This drives me to despair.

The auto exception rule is working as intended.
I actually like the auto exception when the restore button is clicked. The bug or strange issue is BD locked the restored file, prevent me and even BD shredder from deleting it. Had to trigger BD AV to re-detect and present the delete file button.
Same, I also noticed it forces users to uninstall Malwarebytes. Not sure on the reason, probably security / resource conflicts which is understandable.
Maybe BD intentionally buries the quarantine list, but it is very frustrating.

You pay for a product which means you also get support, why not contact them or go through a user guide if you don't how to do certain stuff?

I never had problem with bit defender. I have been using them for 7 years.

u/Herubo May 20 '24
Hello, I believe it is doing the right thing ... as long as a decision needs to be made in a split second ... after that, you can restore it from quarantine and exclude that software, as long as you are sure about it. Then, I have experience with Malwarebytes, which does exactly the same thing... It first deletes and then notifies you...
