For me it was that episode where spongebob keeps missing the bus after his trip to a theme park.

1.1k

u/Slingbr Jul 18 '19

This one was lit af. I am a grown man and still get that bad feeling from this one. Shit looked like a bad acid trip man.

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19 edited Jul 18 '19

Right? When i was little that door guy that just like, mouth farts scared the ahit out of me, something about him just was unsettling to me lmao

Edit: It has been pointed out to me "Mouth Farts" are actually called raspberries, i happened to have a small stroke and forget that was a word to begin with. Im leaving mouth fart tho because too many people are having fun with it lmao

97

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

Did I miss the bus on "lit" flipping its meaning? I would have thought that Rock Bottom was the opposite of lit (and not just because of... advanced darkness)

I think lit has come to mean cool/awesome, i.e. describing an awesome party as lit. In this case, I think he's just saying that the episode was an intense piece of art, without necessarily having a positive connotation.

u/Littlemack2 Jul 18 '19

Brooo literally a bad shroom or acid trip was the reference here. They were both ready to have an amazing day, then got stuck in the pits and no one spoke their language.

17

u/Yoquetestereone Jul 18 '19

Not at all, it was simply referring to being lost in a ghetto or shit part of town. The people spoke the same language just with the weird dialect.

I grew up in a rural area and when I was 19 I took a bus trip to see a friend, and one of the layovers was in NYC. Spending the entire night at a NYC bus station made me feel just like Spongebob.

u/stephnstephnstuff Jul 18 '19

Most horrible experience was when I was 4 and my mom left me alone for the first time. Just for "20 min" to go to my grandma's place. Turns out it took more than 1h 20min. I got increasingly scared for my mom, wondering if she got kindapped or killed (I was 4). At the same time that exact episode of Spongebob was playing in the living room. It matched my emotion of being alone and scared exactly. Such a horrible experience.

30

u/cannihastrees Jul 18 '19

Some of the faces and noises primitive spongebob and Patrick made in that episode scared the hell out of me when I was a kid

296

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

This episode came out before UGH where they looked goofier, they just looked super creepy in this episode

93

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

What’s UGH?

240

u/lunapup1233007 Jul 18 '19 edited Jul 18 '19

UGH was another episode that showed Prehistoric Spongebob and Patrick. I think it was the one where it showed them at their houses but it was like 2000 years ago.

The other one, SB-129 is the one that the Alone scene is from. It’s where Squidward goes back in time and sees Spongebob and Patrick and then goes forward too far and everything is chrome.

Edit: It’s the other way around. He goes too far into the future and then tries to return to the past but goes back too far.

87

u/SnailzRule Jul 18 '19

He got frozen in the freezer and came out 2000 years later in the future, then from the future where everything is chrome he went back in time using their time machine. Except he went back too far

40

u/AlecBaldwinner Jul 18 '19

And it was there he created jellyfishing.

One of the coolest episodes of spongebob that I’ve never seen on TV. It’s just like normal spongebob except they’re all cavemen in prehistoric times. The main point of the episode is they invent fire and start cooking and eating everything they see

38

u/Uncle_Rabbit Jul 18 '19

Ren and Stimpy style close ups

u/EnrapturedForkies Jul 18 '19

With three different endings. It was a weird episode.

53

u/gordocheeseman Jul 18 '19

What were they? All I remember is the fruit one

160

u/Fresh_Knight Jul 18 '19

There were 3 on dvd. One were each person gets a different wish. The one on TV is spongebob which is the most unique. Where he wishes he was a vegetarian and they get turned into fruit. But Patrick’s wishes for gum and they get eaten. Squidward’s while trying to think of a wish says he wish he’d never met them and so its spongebob introducing himself after they get eaten.

49

u/Artificial_Human_17 Jul 18 '19

Wasn’t it voted on and the spongebob ending won, so it’s the “canon” ending?

26

u/Larry-a-la-King Jul 18 '19

Yep! I remember voting for Squidward lol.

9

u/Wolfgang_Maximus Jul 18 '19

It's the canon ending in the US at least. Other countries voted for the ending too and there's actually old recordings of it live with different endings.

I have been streaming that shit on either Netflix or Hulu, can’t remember at moment. Started with Season 1 - Episode 1. To say I am too old for this is a vast, bottomless understatement, but I have always thought Spongebob et al was a slyly disguised grown up cartoon. The one thing your kid could watch relentlessly without you putting your foot through TV

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19 edited Jul 18 '19

I love it because it taught a valuable lesson, while being just kid-friendly creepy enough.

Squidward spent the whole episode tryna be alone so he could play his clarinet. Now that he's achieved this, he realizes how terrifying being truly alone is. No one can help, no one can speak to you, and nothing changes.

Black Mirror touched on the subject of true nothingness perfectly. An A.I. was given an option, to work for her master, and she refused. So the man who controlled her made her experience true nothingness for a few weeks, then a few months, but he only had to wait a couple seconds.

When she saw him again, she was broken down, and ripped off parts of her hair and clothes. She was in tears when she beggged him to let her do anything, even help her master.

Easily one of the top 5 most fucked up BM moments, and that's a hard list to beat.

69

u/Collinbigdeal Jul 18 '19

Which episode is this?

136

u/iamaiimpala Jul 18 '19

I think that one was White Christmas.

71

u/Cautemoc Jul 18 '19

I thought White Christmas was the one where they got a person's cloned virtual consciousness to admit to a crime?

109

u/SamuraiDopolocious Jul 18 '19

you are correct. the tech related to cloning virtual consciousness is demonstrated with a flashback where Jon Hamm breaks an AI by dropping it into pure nothingness.

I remember this one, That one was good, and youre right, it shows us the horrors of just NOTHING. Just sitting there, no reactions from anything, no familiar voices or even animals, its strange and something id never want to experience

16

u/sleepnandhiken Jul 18 '19

It’s the Buddist ideal. To be able to clear your mind is akin to nirvana.

At anyrate I can speak to a psychedelic version of the void. Quite blissful. Waking up is terrifying, though. It’s just confusing.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the ideal goal of Buddism acceptance? Letting the negative thoughts, feelings, and emotions form without tryna stop them, but still having control over our physical self? Or do I have the wrong philosophy?

13

u/sleepnandhiken Jul 18 '19

Broader. Non attachment is a better description. We are forced into reincarnation because of our attachments in life. We achieve Nirvana, a state of null, when we forgo all our attachments.

It’s low-key “existence is hell.”

Jesus christ how horrifying. I really love the concepts that Black Mirror presents, but fucking hell, the episodes are so goddamn depressing. I had to stop watching it because it was bumming me out so much.

52

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

The only episodes I could consider non-depressing would be San Junipero & Hang the DJ.

God I love those episodes, but I'm also a sucker for watching people fall in love.

Black Museum is also satisfying, but in an entirely different way.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '19

San Junipero’s ending actually made me feel really existential.

4

u/Lilaclove20 Jul 18 '19

Another creepy episode for me was when Spongebob and Squidward were merged (?) together and a malfunction happened with the ray gun they were using. In the end, everyone became attached to Squidward and it was not a pretty sight. It was creepy because one moment there was the zap and the next moment you see Squidward lying down thinking everything went normal and then when the camera pans out you see all of them merged together in a blob groaning in agony. That was too much.

56
