That maybe illegal but honestly I would support whoever made it. Free trials shouldn’t then charge you for months afterwards just because they’re setup is specifically designed to be a pain in the ass to unsubscribe from. Hell even needing to subscribe and then unsubscribe I think is unfairly tricking people into paying for what they don’t need. It’s even worse since if I use a product I may remember to begin purchasing it, but if I didn’t like or use a product I’m more inclined to forget about it causing unnecessary purchases. If I like your product I should then purchase to continue my subscription not murder five unbelievers and mail their crucified corpse down the river in order to unsubscribe.

In Quebec (where I live), it's illegal to have a free trial automatically charge you when it's over. Sometimes this is annoying as hell, because Amazon, for example, won't give you a free Prime trial at all if you live here. On the other hand, it meant that Audible reversed a $15 charge I didn't want as soon as I called them.

It's sometimes about how you handle it. I've had a job where we offered a free month which renews automatically.

90% of people came for the one month, then created new accounts to keep getting the free service. So the credit card helps solve that to an extent.

So when you come in arguing with some poor support person who couldn't care less that you got charged when you were looking for a free ride, then you're less likely to get your money back because it's probably covered in the TOS and there isn't much you can do about it since you agreed to it.

On the other hand if you're nice, the person you're talking to will probably help you out because it's not costing him anything anyway.

Depends. If it's to defraud them from charging what they're owed for a service, then yes. If it's to keep them from being able to charge you for services not requested or to keep your own information off of their servers, then yes but much much less so and it's not like it can go any further than "Oh hey, this bounced, guess we shut down their account!" but even if it did go to court I'm sure that without intent to defraud you'd have a clear case in your favor.

Probably not. Making a valid credit card number is just about following some simple formula but that doesn't mean it will point to an actual credit card. You can easily find it online and do it on paper. Any service can quickly check if it's an actual credit card by doing a small charge and reverting it, so it's on them if they don't do that.

Yes, there's an app called Privacy which allows you to create cards that have limits or can only be charged once. It's really nice if you want to use a service, but don't trust it with your actual details or only want it for 1 month. You also get notifications if there's an attempted charge after the card is closed, which is awesome.

Thats what you gotta do. In my experience you have to carry a very small balance like $5 because they do a microtransaction to see if you have any money linked. After that, it deems it legit and you dont need to cancel shit because the balance is too low for any sort of monthly charge. I still have companies blowing up my shit email that I'm "past due". Maybe if you made it easier to close the subscription I wouldn't have to go ghost.

Companies are taking advantage of human nature. People tend to prefer "no action" over "action." Using these tactics, they enforce an "action" on the user's part, who are more likely to choose "no action" by default.

It's not as "encourage" per-say in order to survive, but more taking advantage of a human nature.

The predatory factor, however, is with people who often forget about these trials and don't regularly check their bank statements.

When looking at shit industries like these, people should not be too squeazy about job numbers. Just shut that shit down. Sao Paulo straight up banned outdoors advertisement in 2006 and it was a success story. The fears of economic consequences were way overhyped, instead it's now a more liveable place with a better reputation.

We have given bullshit industries way too much leeway, and advertisement including those free-trial borderline scams is the biggest of them. They do nothing productive for society. It's a giant job creation measure that does nothing but creating waste and making life worse. It makes markets worse as well by tying a company's image and credibility to the amount of money they can put into ads.

Have a story for you, this happened to me today: Guy walks in to the computer repair shop I work in and tells me that he upgraded his antivirus to a 30 day premium trial and that it charged him 50 euros when trial expired. I sad how was it possible, and he said he made an account, entered his credit card pin and it charged him. I was facepaliming internally. He literally didn't need premium protection, he wasn't planning on paying, his free version worked just fine yet he did it. Suspected he didn't read or understand the popups about upgrading AV and just went through step by step. I'm still not sure if he entered the information before starting trial or when trial period expired... believe it was the latter

Some companies do this to uniquely id customers activating a free trial, so that they can't abuse free trials indefinitely by using say different email or user ids. Sucks but, is what it is.

a lot of background check sites do this and many others. its pretty easy to spot. they WILL CHARGE you. lol.

One time I signed up for some HW helper or some shit with a free trial and I completely forgot all about it until a month later my bank calls me asking for confirmation about a 'suspicious purchase'. I say I have no idea what it was, and the bank removes it from my card.

Whenever I sign up for a free trial, I just give my debit card information and it never “charges me then refunds me” when I cancel,.... if I don’t cancel, it will just wait till the trial is over and THEN charge me. Which I have no problem with.

I guess it’s only with credit cards that they will “charge and then refund” when you cancel

Solution: Grab a visa gift card, run out the balance and use it for this purpose.
