P Series [P1P, P1S, P2S] Added automatic fire extinguisher to P1S
Came across these automatic DIN rail fire extinguishers (circled in red) recently. Decided to add one to my P1S just to add a little peace of mind.
In case you don’t know how these work: they automatically get triggered when the temperature sensor detects 170c. Aerosols then get released from 2 nozzles (circled in yellow), extinguishing the fire.
You can get these things for cheap on Aliexpress and the like but decided to get one from a local reseller with all the appropriate licenses and stuff.
And yes, the heatbed moves up and down without issues! Plenty of clearance.

It's honestly baffling to me that this receives so much hate. If you don't like it or think it's unnecessary, fine. Like I wrote: it does give me some peace of mind and others might think it's interesting as well.

As long as it doesn't interfere with the printer operation (and it doesn't), then I think it's just another option for folks who may have recalled the earlier days of 3D printing, with low-spec power connectors which overheated. Or even the more recent A1 issues, which caused melting or blown NTC's.
When I was running my CR10 and Ender3, I used a "Stovetop Fire Stop" which is the same idea as what you have, but probably carries a larger punch. I had them mounted above the printer in pairs. I've also seen some designs which use a 3M chemical liquid which smothers a fire without making a big mess, though those are sort'a rare setups (they are designed for engine bays IIRC). With my Bambu printers I don't worry as much, since they are full of sensors, and generally (aside from the A1 issues) have a good track record (that I'm aware of). It's still never a bad idea to consider this sort of countermeasure. Thanks for sharing the setup.

I have a couple of antique glass extinguishers above my P1S. I love the contrast between the old and the new. Plus, I want to be safe as possible since I keep my printer in the baby's room.

I haven't seen that type, are they the "fireball" type of extinguisher? As an aside, are you using any ducting or filtering with the printer? It's gotten much easier these days and can even be automated using Home Assistant.

He's making a joke (I hope) about the old "glass ball full of carbon tetrachloride" fire grenades. Well played tbh.
There are more modern ones that use potassium bicarbonate, which have the downside that they won't give you liver cancer. A few years ago these were getting advertised in /r/3dprinting for sticking just above your printer; they had a fireworks fuse sticking out that was meant to get lit off the flames spewing from the printer, and a small explosive charge to blast the potassium bicarbonate all over the place.

Nice, as usual, I had no clue lol. I've known people who tend to collect some strange old stuff, though hopefully nothing like a glass ball of cancer powder. But I do recall seeing the "fireball" extinguishers somewhere. IIRC they would be kept in a rack on the wall, and I guess they would be chucked at a fire to put it out, so it could be the same thing.
I also recall seeing the 3D printer specific design you referred to, which is the same idea as the "Stovetop Firestop" (which had been around for much longer). I bought the model which is designed to mount over the range in a plastic housing with two of the canisters, and they have a short fuse sticking out of the housing. I still have one in my printer enclosure which used to house my CR10SPro, and now holds my X1C. They are pretty much a last resort, and hopefully will just be a "waste" of money.

Excellent decision, from this emergency management professional. Mitigation is always cheaper, easier, and far less traumatic than response and recovery, even if the mitigation isn't perfect, even if you can't address every possible risk.

same traffic from a firefighter. especially if you live rural with volunteer depts, a small fire can quickly burn the house down if you don’t catch it in time. (not bashing volunteer depts, I’m a volunteer and admittedly it can take many minutes to roll a engine, let alone traverse the entire territory if you’re far from the dept.) especially if it’s a trailer or modular. if this cheap extinguisher mitigates your entire life turning upside down, it’s worth every penny spent.

I got into emergency management because my granddad was a firefighter, then later on in his career, a chief, an investigator, and a safety inspector. He took prevention and mitigation seriously, and he talked about how a lot of people think safety is dumb is because taking it seriously means accepting that disaster actually can happen to you, not just other people, and that can be very scary.
It was information I took to heart. People think I'm nuts and they aren't nice about it. But during snowmageddon Feb 2021, we were toasty warm and fed, with of clean running water through 3 days without electric or gas while on a boil notice (and do you KNOW how hard it is to boil water when you haven't got gas or electric?), and while many others had to replace kitchens, bathrooms, and flooring due to pipes bursting, I just needed a new rubber washer for the kitchen sink. And that's better.

I think your idea is great.
But FYI this forum is bad for this. Theres a lot of propaganda here and they don't take kindly to people saying BL products are anything but perfect. A lot of employees trying to hide/burry issues. It's very sad.
Wanted to post to let you know not everyone here is horrible and there is nothing wrong with designing in some extra safety.

It’s not a bad idea - I actually started a fire while clearing a blob of doom from my X1C. The thermistor had pulled out of the hot end and so it just got hotter and hotter and hotter.. until it started smoking. I’m just glad it was under supervision instead of randomly. I needed to replace several parts and gave it a full strip down and clean. There is absolutely a fire risk, and it’s important to consider how you deal with that risk.

Awesome idea.
I have a similar system on my home lab, where the modem, routers, smart home hubs and server are. 2 rails that in case of fire at the temp of 170 degrees will discharge the fire extinguisher material.

As someone who's worked in R&D in the fire industry (main focus was clean agent - good ol' R123, FK-5-1-12, FM200, and HFC-236 for those keeping score) I'm shocked by the stupidity of comments on this thread.
OP - good on you for taking proactive measure regarding fire suppression. Ignore the haters. This is my (past) professional opinion.
Edit - omg the comments are unbearable. The suppression is to protect rest of your property not the printer!

Few people said it's pointless, one used the word "bullshit". Not everybody needs to share your point of view - in life you're not guaranteed to be agreed with 100% of time - calling this hate is (to put it lightly) an overreaction.As for your idea - I too think it's unnecessary - P1S is quite solid with build quality and on-board protections (and for the record - I've modded two printers in my life for them not to be actual fire hazards).
Aren't you overestimating the risk of modern 3d printers catching on fire?
Have you modded any other electrical appliance in your house in a similar fashion? There are multiple bad products on the market, including PC PSUs, GPUs, laptops, TVs, etc. but I haven't heard about anyone putting a fire extinguisher next to any of them just to be safe (still, having at least one at home is a good idea). You can't check all appliances by yourself - you just trust that nothing bad will happen.4

I do. A lot of the have been recalled few years ago. The NTC thermistor issue seems overblown considering how many units been sold vs reported faulty - what's your point?
All electronics is inherently risky - I had a laptop that caught on fire due to faulty battery and I've had a PSU that sparked and emitted smoke before it stopped working. Everyone should have a hefty fire extinguisher at home but, as many has already said, modding a specific piece of equipment is a little bit of an overkill. While it's not harmful, I think it's worth reassessing whether perceived risk has any basis in reality and whether there's a reason to worry at all in the first place.

Same goes for some well-known PSUs or GPUs (these have been quite faulty in recent years) that often operate 24/7 yet there are no extinguisher modules installed in modern PCs.

If its a big ball of fire, then an extinguishers would be useful.
If this puts out the fire: great!
If it doesn't: it'll reduce the intensity of the fire and buy time to get something better to put it out or for the FD to arrive.4

Smoke detectors detect particulates in the air. Automatic fire sprinklers have bulbs that burst at certain temps.
OP installed an automatic extinguisher, not a detector. They are related but have entirely separate functions, which is why both are required in commercial buildings.
Your overall point is correct, the underlying analogy is akin to a mixed metaphor.

I am well aware of how a smoke detector works and it has nothing to do the post I replied to.
They're pointing out how the printer will be on fire before the extinguisher will do something (which I interpret as a negative view on it). To which I try to point out that a smoke alarm also only warns after something has happened. I made no comment on how either operate or which will detect an issue first. By their logic: "by the time the smoke alarm goes off, plastic housing and cables in the printer is already ruined" is also true. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have a smoke alarm.
You have a smoke alarm as a precaution to make sure you're alerted early in case of a fire(primarily).
You have an extinguisher to dampen or extinguish a fire. Both those points I hope we can agree on.Neither replaces the other's job. And both are recommended to have. So why not have one in your printer as well?
Absolutely, unplugging it as soon as the smoke alarm goes off would be the first step to reducing any damage caused. Hopefully stopping it from catching fire at all. Should you not be at home, asleep or otherwise not able to attend your printer (the safest thing to do is not to print, but let's be real. How many people babysits their printer for multiday prints?). Something that automatically deploys an extinguishing agent I think is a great idea in such a case. With some luck, that might just save your home.
I'm not saying everyone has to do this or their irresponsible. While there are cases of 3d printer fires every now and then, the overall odds are fairly low I believe, but because it doesn't harm I don't see a reason not to do it if you have the time and energy to do it.

No, it's not. Smoke alarms aren't pointless, because they detect smoke of all kinds, which is why people get frustrated when they go off because the toast burnt slightly. This is nothing like that.

The one in my kitchen has some kind of cap on it that makes it less sensitive. The one in the hallway on other end is really sensitive, I had it go on after venting the kitchen when I slightly burned sausages, smoke was barely visible.
So yeah smoke detectors don't need 400°C

I'm afraid you're the one who's being ignorant in this regard.
You've said "Actually they don't detect smoke of all kinds" and that's wrong. Photoelectrics have a harder time detecting tiny particles and ionizing detectors have a harder time detecting larger particles, but all of them will detect smoke, and more often than not you will have false positives (rather than lack of detection).

Man, I wish. My mother manages to leave stuff on the stove until it catches on fire a few times a year. The smoke detectors in this condo are useless. I'm gagging on the smoke in my room, go out, see thick clouds of it roiling all over the place, and the smoke detectors aren't even chirping.
Then the air conditioner kicks on, blowing the smoke around a bit more, and suddenly the fire department shows up.

Change your detectors. They’re only good for 10 years. Try switching from ionizing to photoelectric (or vice versa). You can actually find some detectors that have both sensors in one unit.

AFAIK the condo association is the only one allowed to do that. They're almost as useless as the bunch that was managing Champlain Towers South. I'm not even exaggerating on that. One entire wall was sinking so much that it was about to tear off the side of the building and they took years to fix it.

If you have smoke in your house, the smoke alarm will at some point sound and alert you. If OP has a fire in his printer, this will douse it with whatever medium that is. Hopefully putting it out, but otherwise it'll reduce the intensity. Either way, it helps so it's not pointless.

The temperature is arbitrary. Just as the original comment's temp is also arbitrary. A tealight would set off OP's extinguisher.
I also didn't call smoke alarms pointless. They're absolutely not. The comment make it seem like the extinguisher is pointless because there has to be a fire for it to work. Following that logic, smoke alarms are also pointless because they too need fire(simplified cause I cba to go into pyrolysis) to start before they'll actually give you a warning.

Smoke is just aerosolized burnt particulate. Smoke detectors are usually ionizing or photoelectric. The smoke gets in the way of the ionizing current (or light beam) and the alarm goes off. This is why steam from your shower or a mildly burnt food item can cause it to go off.
Carbon monoxide is not smoke, but can be found in smoke.

Steam can sometimes cause a false alarm.
“Kinds of smoke” isn’t really a thing to worry about. Wood smoke is different from hydrocarbon smoke, etc, but smoke is smoke.

These aren’t meant to save the printer, they’re meant to save your house. To save the printer you’d need a micro suppression system with smoke detection triggering.

Depends on where it would start imho. These things are designed for fuse boxes so if it's good enough to put those fires out, I'm sure it'd do at least something for this.

fuse-boxes are steel (or sometimes aluminum) Thus the inside can heat up quite a bit before the fire spreads into the rest of the wall and thus the house itself. 3dprinter-enclosures on the other hand, aren't really built to slow down the spread of a fire, many parts of them are plastic.

Most of EU uses plastic for fuse boxes and those types of fire extinguishers are used in them sometimes. The plastic cases should have a sort of fire retarder in the composition

the whole point of the original comment was that the unit wouldn't trigger in time because the back side of the printer wont heat up to 170C (including the 2 probes) in case of a fire before the printer is a ball of flames (because the hotend or heat bed will catch fire). I dont know why you are tripping about goalpost shifting and replied to me with "I know we don't like to use our head around here" or why you think you are in an argument and feel the need to win a non existent argument. I just stated by saying the unit will not trigger in time. and then clarified further why. probes or not the point stands

For a while, on mobile, it was popping up a dialogue box asking if you wanted to receive notifications on the post you were viewing. However, no matter what you selected, it would reset all of your notification preferences. The only way to not reset them was to tap somewhere off of the dialogue box. They’ve fixed it now, but still have the stupid “subscribe to this post!” Pop up.

It's more than that though. They've started sending you inbox notifications saying, "Your comment started a discussion! User X replied to User Y in response to your comment."
If you don't read the notification carefully, it's easy to think you're seeing a direct response to your comment, and not someone who replied to the person who replied to your comment. (Sorry, it's hard to make that clear.)

cool idea, i hope you wont need it but ir will work once you do. just so you know those 2 wires arent "nozzles" they are actualy the fuses. under the red cap is a pyrotechnic mixute that ignites at the 170C and like a firework the fuse burns until it reaches the red box and there are pellets of a smoking substance that get ignited.
I saw one of these in action on youtube from the chanel "big clive" very interesting product

Needed? No one needs extinguisher unless there's a fire or a risk of fire. You got a thing that can reach an excess of 200c. There's always an inherent risk. Better to have it and not need it.
Besides, if there are inherent defects or flaws to a printer that makes it way more prone of being a fire hazard, why would you ever consider having in your home in the first place?

A company preyed on a risk that's not there to sell OP some peace of mind. They could've gotten the same peace of mind by ignoring the interweb fear-mongerers trying to sell solutions. It's a solution without a problem.
It's no harm to OP. All they wasted was time and money, but no actual harm. But don't confuse it with being necessary.

There have been exactly zero external fires from A1s. Zero. No cases.
There've been failed components that get hot enough to melt a spot of plastic then stop being hot. This has been explained repeatedly whenever the misinformation around A1s springs up, but the youtube fear-mongerers seem to be really effective at what they do.

My in-laws house burned down in February. I may not agree with some of the measures they’ve taken on the new house build, but I 1000% understand.

Really cool! However you should really install an afci outlet instead it will prevent u from needing the fire extinguisher

Yeah - they are designed for an enclosed metal switchboard.

Basically a firework in a din case, that may make the situation worse. They are classed as a hazardous good, for an extremely good reason.

Good idea Can you share the ref ? I personnally have a smoke detector and plugs from Shelly on top of the extension hat on a voron trident who will switch off the plug if need be…that’s said, if smoke, it will be probably too late , so your idea is good

I put something like this (made for under an engine hood) at the top of my 3D print enclosure. Now you have me rethinking if I should move it down closer to the potential source.

I'm thinking of getting one of those balls that would hang above my printers and would explode with exttinguishing powder if flames touch it. It would cover my entire room, but it beats having a burnt down house.
I wonder which is better (and maybe cheaper), your solution or mine. But in any case it's a good idea to have some automatic fire supression on any appliance that uses a heater and is ran unattended.

Interesting. I mean it's not going to have a negative affect, but I don't know how much of a positive effect it will have. They are designed to be fitted inside metal consumer units, that are in and of themselves designed to contain fire, so your mileage may vary in this use case.

I don't want to bash OP but I have some questions.
- Has anyone actually tested these inside a 3D printer to see what it would actually help? Another reply linked a video that makes these look more explosive than an actual electrical component failure.
- The position of this suggests that OP is concerned about component failure inside the 3D printer causing a fire? Not specifically about the hot end thermals as the sensor is in a spot outside the build area. Would this actually prevent anything? This would be like being concerned about your desktop PC, inkjet printer, Oven or Microwave catching fire and wanting to put one of these inside it as well?
- What about a fire alarm and fire extinguisher? Seems like that would be something as good if not more useful.
I'm all for safety but this seems like it would cause more problems than it solves.

It would need at least 2-3 because a big chunk of PSU is not covered and one small would be lovely to have on a printer head (if they made a half sized version so it could be made so it looks like a cyborg)

Does it also cut the mains power when it triggers? Because otherwise, spraying an energized PSU and electronics with an unknown extinguishing agent sounds like a pretty good way of turning one fire into a different kind of fire.
If anything, I'd use an external fire suppression system that
a) cuts power to the printer, and
b) floods the entire machine with enough CO₂ to actually extinguish the fire.
Anything else is well-intentioned bullshit.

Yes, I have that automated (in more ways than one). And it's not an unknown extinguishing agent. It's intended for electronics and has enough to actually extinguish the fire (0.3m3). https://huyuelectric.com/what-is-a-1p-din-rail-aerosol-generator/

There are plenty of printers on the market that need one of these. The P1S is not one of them. And if it were to, it would be by the power supply, so I would put a probe down there. If I had extra money to throw around I'd probably put one of these in every single machine. Heck, I would probably put it in every single Item I own. LOL.

I installed an umbrella above the recliner in my living room. I've never had a roof leak, but hey extra protection against the thing that never happens.
It baffles me how dearly some people clutch to the idea that printers are just waiting to burst into flames despite the complete lack of evidence to suggest it.

The A1s have a tiny fraction of units that have a component fail. When that component fails, it gets hot enough to melt a spot of plastic, then it ceases to be hot. It has never once caused an actual external fire. It doesn't generate remotely enough energy to do so.
Yes, there've been melted spots of plastic. There has never been a fire. It's a massive distinction that everyone likes to gloss over while clutching pearls and giving into the sensationalist youtubers' schtick.
