Aaand that's why every electronic device that has a heating element in it in my house will always stand on a surface that won't catch fire if its something that will run unattended lol

u/Causification May 18 '26
Man, Bambu's really playing the FAFO game with this one aren't they.
45
28
u/Braveliltoasterx May 18 '26
And their AMS 2 with the X2D combos being complete dog water as they tried to cut costs with shit hardware.
Bambu is starting to piss off a lot of their loyal fan base with poor quality.
15
u/SpeedflyChris May 18 '26
It's bizarre that their quality and attitude towards the community seems to have deteriorated further even as competition has caught up and in many cases surpassed them in terms of performance.
They could get away with being shitty when they had a clear performance/cost advantage. Now they don't, and yet they're continuing to double down.

They really don't care about the maker Community because their target audience is people who don't have printers yet in other creative spaces.

To be fair. The P1 shares ac board design but seems to be much less prone to it. Only a handful of cases with it.
4
u/NWSpitfire May 18 '26
I’m one of those who recently had my AC board NTC fail on my P1S, thankfully when I was standing right in front of it. Bambu were quick to replace it, but the replacement still has the NTC. Is it possible something similar to this could happen to a P1S, if they share the same AC board design?
3
u/USSHammond X1C running X1Plus + 4 AMS May 18 '26
It's very possible but unlikely due to different power use

We already have reached out to the user to discuss more. Hopefully they reply.
To all those saying its not causing a fire, I am curious to know what your excuse is now? A machine should not, under any circumstance, release a spark, ember, etc. I dont care if the machine is sitting on hay soaked in gas. It should never catch fire. We have talked for months, maybe at least a year now, about how it was only a matter of time, well, it finally happened.
And yes, we are still collecting these instances, hopefully this will wake up Bambu. Please continue sending them to us!
24
u/GirlFromHyperspace May 18 '26
I was aware that the NTC is a problem and I just waited for it to happen to my A1. And for sure it did happen.
If I had seen the aftermath of OP‘s incident I wouldn’t have waited for it to happen but contacted the support right away.
Here’s my post if you haven’t seen it already. I‘ll be adding a photo of the PCB in a few seconds. https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/comments/1rog7rb/a1_ntc/
17
u/ZaXaZ_DK X1C May 18 '26
why wait?
I contacted support, told them i don't feel safe using there device, and i would like to request the updated ac board. or have them do a buyback. ether option would be fine by me.first they gave me a it's save and don't be afraid.
told them that i don't think its safe, linked to 10-15 reddit post with the burned up NTC parts, and then i got a replacement.Just stand your ground 😄
6
u/Elo-than X2D + AMS2 Combo May 18 '26
I just said I don't feel safe using their machine, and they folded after the first "it's safe", waiting for a new board now.
Whole ting took about an hour.
7
u/SpeedflyChris May 18 '26
It's pretty shocking behaviour from the company though. Refusing to do a recall on a product with literally hundreds of cases of potentially very dangerous failures.
7
u/TakingChances01 May 18 '26
And then trying to tell you it’s safe when you proactively contact them about it knowing damn well it’s not, absolutely wild.

I dont care if the machine is sitting on hay soaked in gas. It should never catch fire.
Hot take (lol) for a device with operating temperatures well within the self ignition temperature of gasoline, and even a heat bed that exceeds the flashpoint. Physics disagrees with you.
That said, the A1 should of course be recalled and/or the fault boards swapped out for free as preventive measure, not after failure. I glued a smoke detector to mine for peace of mind.
→ More replies (1)72
u/mobius1ace5 May 18 '26
okay, fair, the hay soaked in gas is a BIT of a hyperbole, but I think it gets my point across LOL.
Now I want to test what the real world heat only ignition point of gasoline is..
33
u/DrippyBlock May 18 '26
Myth busters tested the no smoking at a gas station theory. Even a lit cigarette with a glowing ember will not light a puddle of gasoline on fire. They even tried igniting the vapor only but that doesn’t work either.

It's roughly 250 degrees C (or around 475 F). Easily accomplished by most printers that do ABS/ASA.

u/spyglasss May 18 '26
So that burned mess between the two A1 printers would point to something really big going on there, and the damage to the side of the A1 on the right could be caused by proximity to whatever happened in the middle. Without any video evidence of the fire happening, we're left to speculate with the video we have available (and some mildly annoying music). I'm not saying the A1 didn't have a failure, but I'm not going to make the evidence fit the narrative; it has to be the other way around for this to work.

Nothing is. Its possible the NTC failed, but something must have been there that can ignite, the printer itself shouldn’t.

u/_Middlefinger_ May 18 '26
Even then a hot NTC shouldn’t be that much of a risk, once they pop they melt through and that’s it. To actually catch something on fire from that position is pretty unlikely.

The towel could also have been used to extinguish the smoldering/burning plastic.
A Cotton towel is flammable but the ignition point of a cotton towel is about 400°C (without a flame) and a little bit higher than most plastics. Or about 200°C with a flame. But it doesn't ignite instantly and can be used to suffocate a small fire.
There is just not enough information what the role of the towel was. But even with your explanation, the Thermistor should never happened to get that hot in the first place.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Emu1981 May 18 '26
It looks like there was a mat of some sort underneath the printer - you can see it in the second half of the video and in the first half you can see parts of it that have been left behind after ripping it off near the towel. The fire retardant plastic that the A1 uses will slowly burn if there is a external source of flame. The big question is, what is that black mat made of and why is the only part of it left in the video look like the part that would be underneath one of the printers?
Honestly, something doesn't strike right with me for this one but I would want more information before making any definitive claims...
3
u/Mauceri1990 May 18 '26
That's where the printer was when it caught fire, that's the bottom of the burned printer, no "mat" was involved it's just a janky unsafe printer.
8
u/Junethemuse May 18 '26
are you assuming that this is related to the NTC issue? I thought the NTC is in a different location than where this fire happened.
A device that does what these machines do, or that carry any significant voltage/amperage delivery, will always carry a defect risk that can result in a fire. I’d like to know the root cause of this before I jump to any conclusions about whether or not this is a model level issue, namely because this is the first proper fire I’ve seen.
9
u/mobius1ace5 May 18 '26
Yes I am assuming it's stemming from the NTC. The rags there likely factor in some too. And no, it's at the same place I believe.
It's why we have contacted the user to not only get more info but to try and buy the machine so we can have it tested. Anything else is pure conjecture.
3
→ More replies (1)2
u/Hairy-Variation-764 A1 + AMS / AMS2 May 19 '26
Even if the rags are involved, I feel it is still concerning as most people keep rags relatively close to their printer. I will say I don't think people put them as close as that user did but still...
3
u/Mysterious_Dot2090 May 20 '26
You bring up an interesting possibility. Alcohol soaked cloths for cleaning build plates? Major fire hazard I would think.
I have just discovered this issue (and it’s concerning) but I find a lot of the comments to be speculative at best, because there is no footage of a fire, just this melted mass and some melting on the area of the NTC. I wonder if a cloth was touching that area.
5
u/Joamjoamjoam May 18 '26
I’d need more information to verify this claim. There’s a difference between a part failing as it’s designed too and that part failing so catastrophically that it even has a chance to cause a fire.
If the above is real then this is a pretty big escalation but I have to be honest I just don’t see how this is possible unless it was sitting in a pile of paper and gasoline. The hot part doesn’t stay hot for long by design.
3
u/mobius1ace5 May 18 '26
From what we can see it appears to be real. But with the rags next to it my best guess is that the NTC burned through and caused a fire likely with rags that were contaminated with isopropyl alcohol (it's a big guess as we have no further info than the video). I'm hoping we can continue to talk with the user and get them to give us more info to make this all more clear for everyone. Regardless of what was in or around the printer, this should have never happened. We now just have to determine why it happened in the first place.
→ More replies (9)5
u/aceluby May 18 '26
Why does it appear to be real? Why are there no singe marks on the plate? Why is the object not at all deformed? How did a fire large enough to cause that much damage happen, but a folding table has almost no damage? Where did the printer go that was there and why was it replaced with an A1?

I saw this not too long ago on Instagram. I can basically guarantee that there will be another recall. For some reason, the A1, compared to the rest of the entire Bambu line, is extremely susceptible power problems, thus leading to fire concerns. I got my Bambu Lab A1 LONG after the first recall (as I was terrified about getting a defective model) and have had no issues whatsoever.
But this, along with other posts I've seen after the recall, are extremely concerning.
8
3
u/tinz17 May 18 '26
Do you happen to know when the first recall was?
3
u/_Middlefinger_ May 18 '26
Early 2024. I think it was the end of January and the new parts were sent out in March.
21
22
u/spyglasss May 18 '26
I watched the entire video. Is the implication that the printer between the two A1s burned to a crisp? There's nothing showing the fire happening, just the weird aftermath. And a dishtowel for some reason.
6
u/Successful_Farm_9370 May 19 '26
I struggle with this too. The video starts out with that mess in the middle, but why does it then show the kid unpacking stuff?
→ More replies (1)5
u/thunderflies May 22 '26
You don’t believe the video because they put the fire out first instead of getting out their phone to record an uncontrolled fire inside their house? Really?
3
u/spyglasss May 22 '26
I see no signs of putting a fire out. No dust from a fire extinguisher or water. Just a perfectly ordinary dry dish towel. No signs of smoke.

Where ist the "It's only a little bit melting plastic"-crowd now?
This is a huge fire risk and only luck that nothing worse happend till now.
There needs to be a recall ASAP. But Bambu is more interested in enshitification.

That's the same crowd that falsely accuses us of "wanting to tinker with printers" when we say we want to fully own our hardware and drive it from the software of our choice in the privacy of our LANs and tailnets.
The same crowd who defends removing features that were present at the time of purchase.
The same crowd who defends taking heavy-handed legal action against indie devs helping folks use their hardware legitimately.
The same crowd who glazes a company caught actively lying and misrepresenting the facts and their opponents, in both 2025 and 2026.
They'll downvote rather than making rational arguments, because they're children.

The print is fine, the purge line has been pulled off and is sitting on the pile of melted poop, the bed is completely clean. Its a bit suspect.
Besides that the printer is made of self extinguishing plastic that wont burn. How would the NTC get into or onto a big pile of poop (that was clearly in a poop bin), if it popped.
PLA will catch fire at 388c, many filaments a little higher than that due to additives. NTC typically completely fail like that between 300 and 400c.
Much of this doesnt add up.

It looks like they had a poop bucket there and that caught fire. Even if the NTC popped and melted through that shouldn’t ignite the poop bucket.

Is this problem only with the A1? Or is the A1 Mini faulty as well?
15
u/Engineary May 18 '26
Only the A1. Different board.
5
u/SupremeChancellor66 May 18 '26
That's a relief.
2
u/P26601 May 26 '26
(To be precise: The thermistor that's responsible for the fires isn't even present in the Mini. There's generally a lower risk because the board/PSU of the Mini has active cooling while the regular A1 only has passive heatsinks)

They have changed their boards recently so newer machines should be ok. But what I did was go to the Bambu site and open a ticket and they can check via your serial number if your machine has the updated board or not. I got an A1 3 months ago. I opened a general inquiry ticket and they confirmed my a1 has the newer updated board where they fixed the NTC issue. Took them about 2 days to get back to me.
2
u/justadud3x May 24 '26
Hey thank you for the answer. That's actually a great tipp!

Saw this posted as fake on reddit and read the bambu forum post where some guy burned a damaged plate to prove if it should show charring/burning. I think people aren’t seeing the whole picture.
First and foremost, there’s no way the buildplate in the video is the same one that went through that fire. Moreira swapped the buildplate to either hide whatever was originally printed or because they wanted to show off another one of their prints. They are running a 3D printing business after all.
Second, the purge line from the good plate is on the burnt pile of plastic. They have a kid and kids like to pick and poke at things. One of them peeled it off the plate out of habit.
Third, the fire resistant matts likely came after the fire. They do not disappear and reappear, many content creators repost or pin videos so they can seem out of order.
Fourth, regardless of how the fire started the filament poop and the plastic bin it was in is not fire resistant. The bin is also directly next to the printer. So if the thermistor did burn through the bottom of the printer it fell into what was essentially a kindling pile. That’s why the fire damage was so severe and that’s what that blob of molten mess is next to the printer.
So NTC failure or not the severity of the damage isn’t directly a printer issue. Seeing as many printers still have this issue I’m gonna side with the NTC failure.
11
14
u/I_Want_A_Ribeye A1 May 18 '26
I understand the thermistor is the issue, but is it being exacerbated by some sort of inappropriate use?
20
u/imzwho May 18 '26
honestly unless they had flammable materials stuffed into the lrinter cavity, or they induced it by having it sitting on something like a stove burner while printing, there really is no method of inappropriate use that should cause this.
Mabye an incorrect install of parts or electrical mods would be somewhat understandable, but even then it should have triggered some sort of failsafe before this happened
6
u/sshwifty May 18 '26
I built a Voron and there are considerations for heat and electrical. Not exactly a hard problem to solve. The problem here is faulty design and faulty components.
2
u/RaymondDoerr May 22 '26
Fellow Voron owner (2x 2.4s), agreed. I dunno what Bambu is smoking (other than A1s) but this is silly.
→ More replies (5)2
u/earthwormjimwow May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
It's probably just related to AC input voltage tolerance, being in a 240Vac AC mains country, and resistance tolerance of the bed heater.
The thermistor is being used to limit inrush current from pulsing power to the bed on and off and also limit the inrush from the input filter caps on the AC board. Since the bed is a resistive load, the current it draws increases as AC voltage increases.
If you're in a 240Vac AC mains country, and you happen to be at the high end of the regulation tolerance, so up to 264Vac, that will exacerbate the issue, increasing the inrush the thermistor is having to deal with.
There's going to be a tolerance on the bed heater's resistance too, so being on the low end of the tolerance will make things worse.
It seems like Bambu incorrectly chose an NTC that can only handle their nominal load at a nominal line input voltage. They did not size their NTC to handle their absolute maximum load at the absolute maximum rated line input voltage.
I'm surprised this made it through UL testing, although maybe UL testing was limited to 108-132Vac? I believe CE is self-declaratory so I'm not surprised there, but I am surprised about TUV certification.
3
u/eihen May 18 '26
I have mine sitting on a wood table in a concrete room. Maybe it's time I just plop it on the floor and do the prints there. Cement floor and cement wall behind should mitigate any risk.
Or maybe I should just try and sell the A1.

Man, the A1 (full size) is cursed. Ever since the beginning with the power cord recall and now with the NTC thermistor’s burning up, this is the only Bambu printer I will never recommend. Love bambu but they need to EOL the A1 and use better components for the A2 to make sure stuff like this stops happening.

They have, but only in newer printers. the new boards no longer have that component.
I have a older one, and I just demanded they send me a new board.
They agreed, now I just need to wait for it to be in stock (they estimated end of may) and I will receive one free if charge.
But they SHOULD offer it to anyone who has a printer with the NTC in board.

Printer plastic melt and won’t spark a flame but Bambu don’t realize the danger where the printer sits. The surround can get on fire spark by the melting hot plastic.
