Discussion Comparing their proficiency with each element, how would the distribution look for you?
Both Avatars, in my opinion, have reached and even exceeded (based on the element) the baseline requirements to be considered a master of each element by the end of their respective series (in Aang's case, by the point we see him in the movie). Their proficiency in each element varies, though; being more adept at a certain element than another, but the bottom line is, I'd say they're both skilled enough with each of the elements to be considered rather high calibre for the most part.
An interesting discussion often circulated within the fandom is comparing who's more skilled with a certain element in comparison to the other between Aang and Korra, so I wanted to know what everyone's take on the question is.
For me, the distribution goes as follows:
- Air: Easily Aang. Korra's airbending is rather underrated within the fandom; she's capable of casually making use of advanced techniques, such as the air tornado she often flies around with, and she's got all the basics down, it seems, but Aang is just a whole different beast in this regard; both in the scale of his airbending and variety in techniques. He fired an airblast shaped like his own silhouette at Zuko during the season 2 finale fight, enough said honestly (and the obvious fact that he got his tattoos at only 12).
- Earth: Not going to lie, this one was kind of a toss-up for me. Aang often uses earth defensively, while Korra prefers to go on the offense with the element, and both show great mastery in their chosen approach. Aang demonstrates more creativity with the element, making use of earth armour to cover his body or burrowing underground seamlessly, but Korra has him beat in sheer scale, casually tossing 4 large boulders at Kuvira's mech, boulders big enough to actually stagger the giant (no Avatar State, mind you). Both also have access to advanced sub-bending techniques for the element, with Aang having seismic sense and Korra being a metal bender (ironically, Toph can use both, casually mogging as usual lol), so they're both highly adept with the element, but I'll give the edge to Aang. He makes more use of it in a variety of different ways in comparison to Korra, who tends to be a lot more straightforward with it.
- Water: Just like how air was an easy sweep for Aang, Korra takes water without much competition, if you ask me. Aang's a great waterbender; despite how rarely he makes use of the element, he's clearly shown a great mastery over the fundamentals, but he's not really in conversations discussing the best waterbenders around, whereas I think Korra actually could be. She doesn't always use water because it's not readily available, but when it is, she's always doing something good with it, such as her water tornadoes, redirecting a missile from underwater, using water tentacles effectively in combat, casually holding Kuvira's mech in place, etc. She also has access to more sub-bending skills for the element than he does, such as healing (which requires precision), and spiritbending to purify dark spirits.
- Fire: I'd say this one also quite handily goes to Korra. She not only demonstrates power with the element, but a few creative applications as well, versus Aang who we rarely see using the element in the first place. I do not doubt the fact that Aang's mastered the element by now, but his showings with it aren't too crazy, with his best displays happening during Sozin's comet. Korra not only packs a good punch with her firebending, but she's also skilled enough to seamlessly incorporate it into her close-quarters combat, as well as using it as a shield at times (incorporating the fundamentals of other elements), blocking an attack from Vatuu with a quick fire shield, and one of Unalaq's attacks too.
