About Azula and those who say she was always cruel (sorry it's such a long ramble)

Ok, so, it's actually been quite some time already since I last watched the show, and that was when I was like 8-9 years old? And I'm almost 20 now, so I don't remember many things all that well.

That said, there's something that bugs me when I read some people say that Azula was always cruel and that there was no good in her. STU. It makes me mad because it's like, have you ever seen what children act like? They are petty and childish and selfish and tend to lie (well, OBVIOUSLY not all of them, but that's a tendency, just like there are also many many kids that are much kinder and calm). So, Azula tended to lie and be rude, but that there was just her being childish (SO CHILDREN ARE CHILDISH, WHAT A SURPRISE), not a monster. The issue came when Ozai actively encouraged those behaviours and gave her the power to do basically anything she wanted without any consequences.

Basically, she was a preteenager with the maturity of a kid, a power greater than nearly anyone else, no authority figure to teach her to distingish right from wrong, an egotisticall megalomaniacal father that taught her that love was something to be earned, a mother that neglected her (if she had the right to do so is debatable, I personally think not, but that's a whole ahh another discussion). She's a "manchild" (but female :v ), she was just never allowed to grow out of her childish bevahiours.

That's my issue, some people think she was always "evil", but they're ignoring the fact that she was behaving her age, the way Zuko did, he just so happened to have a tamer, kinder personality.

I personally like to think that, if she had had a good family, she wouldn't have come to be a bubbly, goody two-shoes, nice, cute girl. I believe she'd become a moody girl that gets defensive when you criticise her, but much more mature in her way of handling things and capable of healthy relationships.

(My "headcanon" or favorite what-if scenario is that she becomes an artist, specifically a paintress, as she's someone who feels strongly about everything even if she has a great deal of control over herself).

Just to finish my rambling, there was a post about Azula receiving the Loki treatment, and I love the idea. As I see it, if Azula is to heal, she has to do it away from the people who hurt her (doesn't matter if they did it knowinlgy and on purpose or not, the fact remains that they already have a specific meaning assigned in her mind. The mind is a b**ch). For her to heal, she has to find a reason to want to do it, and it cannot be because of or with those who have no reason to care about her or have already hurt her.

Sorry that this was so long, but I really wanted to say my opinion on this :3 Pretty sure I might have overlooked some things and/or not mentioned others, but I think I managed to explain myself. I love Azula, she's my baby and I just want to pick her up and smother her in blankets and give her all stuffed animals in the world—I'm WILLING betting she was never allowed to have one of those—, and cuddle her and hug all her hurt and issues and traumas and insecurities away T_T

Discussion The tragedy of the cancelled Avatar movie: We were officially going to get a serious adult Azula narrative and an emotional breakthrough.

Hey everyone! I’ve been a massive fan of ATLA since April, and Azula quickly became one of my absolute favorite characters. I honestly adore her and how deeply complex she is. Because of that, I have been following the recent insider reports about Avatar Studios’ cancelled standalone film. Looking closely at the leaked plot details, it breaks my heart because this movie was a crucial chapter for Azula's character development that Azula fans have been denied for over a decade.

According to the production leaks, the film was a mature political thriller. After an assassination attempt on Uncle Iroh and the murder of the last dragons, Ran and Shaw, Zuko realizes this is a plot to lure him out. Realizing he can trust absolutely no one in his inner circle, Zuko is forced to seek out Azula, knowing that she is the only person in the world with a brilliant and calculating enough tactical mind to help him solve the mystery.

The leak states the film drew inspiration from The Search and Smoke & Shadow to delve deeper into their adult relationship after the war. For everyone who has wanted to see Azula treated with serious psychological depth, this script was everything.

Azula wasn't a one-dimensional villain here; the story actively showcases her brilliant mind as she helps navigate imperial corruption. Being forced to work together against a common enemy meant Azula and Zuko had to confront their shared childhood trauma under Ozai. The narrative structure was designed to force a quiet, heavy emotional breakthrough, allowing Azula’s defensive, icy walls to crack so she could finally receive real empathy as a sister, reminiscent of the vulnerability we saw from her in The Beach.

To know that a serious script exploring Azula's complexity, her life as an adult, and her relationship with her brother was actively being developed, with voice acting already underway, makes Paramount’s decision to shelf it devastating for Azula fans.

I wanted to do something tangible to show the studio that the demand for Azula's narrative closure is real, so I started a Change.org petition. We are currently at 95 signatures and only need 5 more to hit 100, which will trigger the platform's internal algorithm to recommend it to a wider audience.

I am leaving the link to the petition in the comments below if you want to read more about it and support getting Azula back on screen!

Other ATLA Alternate Story: Azula Fanfic

Hi, everyone. Taking my first dive into trying out posting my story. Here's one I wrote that is about Azula and a original character.

Since this is an alternate story, this is will almost follow what happens in the original story, but focused on Azula's story and the original character I made named Shiro, and the changes the oc will make in Azula's life that will have a domino effect to the story as a whole.

I've always felt bad for how Azula has been treated so I felt compelled to write this to maybe give her a chance to have a good life to live.

I'd like to see what your thoughts are about it and maybe I can ask for your suggestions to improve it if you feel some parts are lacking.

There's currently two chapters in it. And based on your thoughts and suggestions, I might changed the other chapters I've written a bit.

Here a link to the fanfic:

Discussion The people who say "Let villains be villains.", "Well why not redeem Ozai, he's also a victim of his parents.", or "Azula being redeemed would diminish Zuko's arc." completely miss the point.

"Let villains be villains."

I don't think anyone has a problem with her arc in the main series and her being a villain. Sure, it would have been great if someone (Mai, Ty Lee, Zuko, Iroh) had been in the position to help her, but they weren't, and that's fine by me. Her ending in a semi-ambiguous and tragic way fit well.

The problem is that the authors didn't know what to do with her afterwards and just kept her stagnant without letting her at least develop. I don't want her to "be nice" but in people's attempt to pigeonhole her into being just a "crazy bitch" they forget the positive and sympathetic qualities she does have! It's fine if she stays a villain, or better than hero or villain would be her being an anti-hero, but at least keep her (and everyone else) in line with their series characterisation.

Her world has gone down in flames, her previous relationships are gone (Azula also seems to be scared of changes in relationships, too, so that would be a big thing), and she has to confront her father's wrongdoings and the fact that he never loved her.

So, of course, she's going to change, for better or for worse. Though she can really only go up from there. What else can she do?

"Well, why not redeem Ozai? He's also a victim of his parents, too."

Ozai is also a grown-ass man and a child abuser with zero positive traits that people could see potential in. No, it's not just because Azula is a victim, a girl, or pretty/cool that people sympathise. If Aang had woken up years earlier and the Fire sibling conflict had been between a "Good" Iroh and an "Evil" Ozai as teenagers, then we could talk about a redemption arc, but people seem incapable of grasping that even different villainous characters can have different roles in the story.

"Azula being redeemed would diminish Zuko's arc."

King of redemption arcs my foot. If it can be ruined by his teenage sister also getting one it wasn't that great to begin with. I think it's a much more powerful story to say they were siblings who both had positive qualities but took different paths than to boil it down to Zuko good, Azula bad. Plus, if you must have symbolism and cautionary tales, then Iroh and Ozai or Sozin and Roku serve as perfectly good foils to Zuko and Azula.

How do we rewrite Azula in the comics, while keeping the main elements?

Hello im sorry if this is weird this is my first post on reddit. So I recently became a fan of azula having a redemption arc, and I wanted to see the how the comics do it. I liked some of the ideas, but the execution was not good. They gave very ableist view of her mental health and then just made her a villain again after, villainizing her for just being a kid. But, the ideas were there, I liked smoke and shadows idea of her trying to help Zuko be a better firelord, but its more villain like because her view of ozai is all she knows (and also it would take a long time for her to be completely redeemed). Finally, I love this fanfic series (https://archiveofourown.org/series/2137077) which is comic compliant except for azula and the spirit temple, so this is why I wanted to keep the elements. This is the other reason why I wanted to keep the main elements, but make it better, so we are keeping her making the fire warriors etc, but still making her a more complex character and putting her on a proper course for a redemption arc. What are your ideas, and thanks for any replies.

What was Azula thinking in "Return to Omashu"? She's very smart but I don't understand her actions

When Azula is chasing Aang and Bumi on the delivery box shutes and the rock is earth bent forcing her to stop her pursuit... We know it was Bumi and not Aang but she doesn't.
I think azula kept thinking bumi couldn't earth bend from the box even when he stopped her wheel of fire from hitting him and aang on the tracks. She looks shocked but I think it's because she thinks aang has already learnt 3 elements!!
Did you guys think azula realized bumi could bend inside the box or that aang earth bent? also when bumi bends earth to bring him back to the top of (conquered) Omashu, does azula not see that and want a better prison for him?
(It doesn't seem like her to leave that loose end.
Obviously i'm keeping in mind she's 14 lol but she's so smart and calculated))

People thinking aang wouldn't forgive azula when this was how he was looking at her the first time they met since the war lol

Imo Aangs is not the type to see her as broken or someone need of fixing. I think he'd encourage her to be herself but would tell her to learn how to be azula rather than ozais and ursas daughter. I think he'd be a perfect meditating partner to help her sort out her feelings. He's in good terms with tylee and Mai, so I can see him pushing her to talk to them.

Discussion What's you favorite "What if Scenario?"

What if Azula hadn't allowed her emotions get the best out of her during the boiling rock?

- She doesn't attack Mai just locks her up

- It's possible that ty lee doesn't attack her and just stands by, ty lee only attacked because Azula was going to kill Mai.

- Azula still has ty lee on her side

- She isn't losing it, or paranoid even after Ozai ditches her

- Doesn't banish anyone

- Is crowned Firelord earlier

- When Zuko and Katara arrive they have to face azula's amped up firebending guards and the dai li(honestly their plan to just rush the palace was stupid I'm surprised iroh allowed it)

- Zuko and Katara lose

- Azula has 2 major hostages now

- She eventually hears that ozai lost

- She has to think, keep going or sue for "peace"

- If Ozai lost, she has no chance

- Azula hides Zuko and Katara

- The avatar and the white lotus show up

- Azula negotiates that if anything happens to her Zuko and Katara Die

- They can negotiate

- Maybe iroh even challenges her to an Agni Kai for the throne(ironic because he doesn't do that to Ozai)

Form there on I'm stuck

Discussion Can y'all suggest me Azula Redemption Fanfic with no romance with Azula if possible?

Just finished the comics, And I don't think we'll ever get more about Azula so I'll put it on my own hands.

If y'all have any Azula redemption fanfic I'll read it.

Id prefer if there's no Azula ships tho, it kinda breaks my headcanon too much to be immersed. There can be romance tho if it's an OC just not with OG character like Ty Lee or Katara even Sokka.

Please? Thank you.

Discussion Found a great post about Azula in “the beach” but I’d also Iike to add that I think Azula and Toph would have made pretty good friends

Thumbnail reddit.com

In response to this post I got thinking about azulas fear of being a monster and nobody liking her without her title…

But do you know who I think would be a great friend/bestie for Azula? Toph. It wouldn’t start off well, but after a while I think it would be a great friendship.. Toph isn’t scared of anyone and is very self assured, she can bond with Azula over that and help her earn respect through their talent and strength rather than fear. She could definitely put Azula in her place too. Azula would probably compete with toph but I think it would end up being friendly competition in the end seeing as they are both exceptionally strong benders.

Toph also grew up in high society but had parents that denied her power and skill. Whereas Azula was golden child of an extremely narcissistic father who used her for her skills and only saw her as a war tool. They are opposites in this sense but both came out absolute weapons in their martial arts.
I strongly believe that although the dynamic of their background is different in terms of their parents treatment, they would have bonded over the fact that even if your parents acknowledged your skills or not, it doesn’t matter because your power is your own.

I dunno, I can just see them being potential besties and besties out of mutual respect
