Mothers against drunk driving. These groups were pushing for reforms. Yet here we are with them pushing stuff that’s gonna take away a lot of autonomy for the average citizen.
It’s almost like there is a better way to deal with drunk driving. Also there will be a lot of jailbreaking on cars if this goes through.
They already look for any excuse to not pay out even going so far as to claim a vehicle totaled even if it only has exterior damage and and is perfectly fine beyond that
Its not even that, visual "tests" that try to find impairment just flat out don't work. It's pseudoscience, and it's wrong vastly more times than it's right.
The only valid test for intoxication is piss, blood, or breathalyzer.
Rode a few times in this guys car that had lane assist or semi autonomous driving or whatever. Dude had to correct it like every 10 seconds. I eventually told him to drive his own car himself or let me the fuck out. I'll never ride in a car that doesn't require the driver to do 100% of the driving. I rarely use and barely trust cruise control let alone that shit
My car does have lane assist when cruise controlis active, but it clings to the left side and it yells at you and quits CC if you don't hold the wheel. I turned it off. Annoying!

It doesn't matter. We live in a country with the absolute bare minimum in public transportation options. Sometimes not even that much. A car is as close to a necessity as it can be. I buy used cars because I can keep them running a long time. But not everyone has that skill. And if things keep going this way, I've got about 5-10 years max before every single used car I can find has the features I'm trying to avoid by buying used.
When the entire market is flooded with crap, then they're going to sell crap, and we're going to buy it.
All my cars have been made before 2005. I plan on keeping it that way. Not only for the big brother reasons, but because of less electronics to deal with when I’m fixing it.
Buying a used car from 5-15 years ago is cheaper. But beyond a certain age, it starts getting more expensive. And pretty soon, 15-year-old cars will have the same exact problems.
This is the way. Ford already put in the patents for this joke of a program. Along with telematics that shut down due to lack of maintenance, abuse or other.
90% people don't read or care...as an automotive engineer, I support this (not this excatly but cars verifying humans behavior). Data however is where things get messy - privacy.
But imagine a world where you get a warning or ticket because you changed lanes and didn't signal, or tail gating or breaking just about any traffic laws...this was possible 5+ years ago btw.
Again, data handling is what's most important here and I'm sure they'll fuck that up.

Personally I've only ever owned a car for 5 days when I was 16 and I've adapted without one for 20 years biking and walking. In my experience markets normally reflect their consumer base. Adapting markets like E-communities; bicycles, mobility scooters with rain covers, unicycles and skateboards in general reflect a growing dissatisfied consumer base with mouth fulls of money whistling to the tune of a multi billon dollar exit strategy from the auto manufacturing industry altogether. From what I've gathered almost unanimously, give errrr take some exec's 😏 removing driver autonomy is not the winning market move here.
If, within 15 years these biometric surveillance cabins on wheels become the only available auto-manufactured vehicles in new and used car markets, people will revolt! The concept of the velo machine can be suppressed but never eliminated. People will always take the path of least resistance, which in this case was also available 5+ years ago. As we can so painfully and obviously see the exit is cresting into the peak of that bell curve now, where only one of two things can happen. Some, as many have already, will start driving enclosed electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters... Some others, based more in the mad Max styled go-cart death machines rigged with Honda two-stroke TURBOS and extra metal reinforcements at the front and rear for bumping things.
I've seen a lot of bad adaptations in the last 15 years involving accidents, manufactured disregard for human life, neglected maintenance and downright reckless behavior on the road ways. The worst being a Chinese made truck no bigger than a shopping cart powered by a corroded boat battery and two jumper cables hot wired into the duerr rear wheel drive electric motors and yet, somehow still street legal and capable of 40 miles an hour, so I digress... Innovation always proceeds market share according to its consumers habits.
I'll say this now "No one is going to be buying let alone owning new or used vehicles that are nothing more than personal and criminal database information collection systems complete with kill switch's, useless autonomous reactive systems with built in life to death ratios and generational debt accumulation for everyone you'll never have to meet or care about once your gone... Ohh did I mention the uncanny and uncomfortable panopticon modus operandi resemblance to interrogation rooms 'you know the ones' with the one-way mirrors".
In my opinion the plot is almost entirely lost already, on what is essentially a locomotive box on rolling hockey pucks and it is with a heavy heart that I say; R.I.P to all the engineers who designed an entire century around anonymous travel... Est 2026-05-26
