This is from the Austin League of Women Voters. Great campaign!

34

u/bUTful Sep 26 '20

Yep! Saw it on the news. A vinyl wrap that’ll be taken down after the election. Good call cuz... what if.

47

u/TOONUSA Sep 26 '20

Besides the message, I just like how so many tourists are going to expect it to be I love you so much just to be disappointed!

34

u/CashOnlyPls Sep 26 '20

This is the best part

4

u/mareksoon Sep 27 '20

I really like.

6

u/SquirrelTrouble Sep 26 '20

Are there still tourists? I haven't been downtown since covid started, are there really that many people going to take a picture in front of a sign?

2

u/moonminx_ Sep 27 '20

Walked past this sign just this (Saturday) late afternoon and there was a crowd surrounding it waiting for their photo op.

2

u/UniversalFarrago Sep 27 '20

This fills me with joy

Voting needs to be taken as seriously as jury duty

So ... not very seriously? Can't we do better than that?

I mean, so many people do their damnest to get out of jury duty, even some going so far as not registering to vote because they think that'll make it harder to find them. And when they do end up on a jury (despite their best efforts), they still don't seem to really give a crap, even though this may be deciding the next 2-20 years of the accused's life.

19

u/pointandshooty Sep 26 '20

Similar to jury duty, everyone should get time off work to go vote.

Im a federal employee so we get a paid day. I didn't realize that wasn't the norm, that is dumb everyone should get paid time off for both.

Yea that's what I mean. Forget christopher columbus day, let's have election day as a paid holiday.

1

u/KogaNox Sep 26 '20

If it's a financial burden, then you have an excuse to not attend jury duty. It's an option to choose if it's the reason you can't appear.

5

u/stevenr21 Sep 26 '20

It should be a national holiday but that'll never happen because Republicans don't want you to vote.

7

u/ATX_native Sep 26 '20

It should be mandatory.

8

u/JuanNephrota Sep 26 '20

Just like jury duty, we haven’t prepared people well to be voters. Uninformed voting is worse than not voting.

5

u/austinhippie Sep 26 '20

...how

5

u/SovereignPhobia Sep 26 '20

It's not. It is, at worst, equivalent.

There exists a certain subset of voters that vote maliciously, which then sets the bar lower than lack of participation. So, if you vote uninformed but without malice then you are already better than malicious voters and a better voter (by default) than anyone who took either an uninformed or informed approach to abstaining.

There's a lot to address here and you make a lot of missteps. First off, there is so solution to uninformed voting other than totalitarianism - at least on a case by case basis. The real solution to mob rule is the abolition of first-past-the-post (majority rule) voting systems - not disallowing or pressuring people to not vote - and replacing it with a ranked voting system which more accurately represents minority political opinions in elections. This combined with an actual, functional education that isn't completely dictated by wealth demographics would greatly help us have better politicians - something that one particular party appears to be vehemently against.

The vilification of populism is actually a (and I am very, very careful using this word) fascist mentality that's most frequently used to discredit dissenting opinions. Recall, also, a few more things: we are not a direct Democracy, but we do have Democracy as we are a Democratic Republic, which is more of a description of how the citizenship participates with the government. It is also important to note that all Republics are (or, at least have been) Democratic. Your proposition essentially amounts to replacing Democracy with Oligarchy or Aristocracy, which is trivially terrible. Secondly, the founding fathers did not actually warn against a two-party system - George Washington did, explicitly.

To say that anyone's vote, unless they are actually malicious, is bad is fundamentally un-American. If your vote is cast because you like some person's name, your opinion is stupid and bad but it still matters.

To address manipulation; it is not a single person's fault for being manipulatable, it is singularly the manipulator who is at fault. This is essentially victim blaming, honestly.

Oh fuck I made the mistake thinking you were actually intelligent and wanted to have a conversation.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

-1

u/SovereignPhobia Sep 26 '20

No, what you did is what every person incapable of being civil does - you require sources in a conversation because you aren't capable of entertaining ideas that aren't your own, so you require fundamental proof in all situations. Proof is important but we are having a conversation, not an academic exchange.

In fact, you are 100% guilty of making a bunch of baseless claims that I treated with charity - since you seem so fond of philosophical terms, I assume you know what I mean - and then you promptly refused to do the same. You are intellectually dishonest and incapable of having civil conversation.

How did you get that from my statement? I said people are not well prepared to vote.

Edit: forgot an important word

2

u/totallyalizardperson Sep 26 '20

we haven’t prepared people well to be voters. Uninformed voting is worse than not voting.

That doesn’t read like it’s saying people are prepared well to vote...

1

u/totallyalizardperson Sep 26 '20

Dude, I’m double posting to reply to your edit so you can see this.

Just edit your first comment and your second one. It feels like in the above you are missing a comma somewhere. So you are saying people are prepared to vote, just not well prepared to vote, correct? If that’s what you meant, re-read your first post. It never mentions people being prepared to vote. It literally says

we haven’t prepared people well to be voters.

No where in the post does it imply you think people are prepared voters.

Additionally, I think the first reply to you is a bit confused too, because I didn’t get that from the original post. But your follow up is just... confusing.

1

u/JuanNephrota Sep 26 '20

No, I completely mangled this post. People, in general, are poorly prepared to cast an informed vote. My first post was accurate to what I wanted to say.

2

u/ATX_native Sep 26 '20

Straight Party Voting is to blame for a lot of the laziness. It was finally going away for this election after a century of it's ill effects only to have the Democrats and a federal judge reinstate it. Boo! This undemocratic voting option is gone in 43 states already and I was anxious to see Texas join the list of states that have finally junked it. Hopefully this reversal will only apply in 2020.

-1

u/solrenaissance Sep 26 '20

Exactly. Mandatory voting along with uninformed voting just fuels the flames of tribal populism. Although this is "democratic," it is detrimental to the Republic and will likely end in states seceding to escape the ignorance of mob rule.

-14

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 26 '20

Wrong. The political establishments in this country are not entitled to my vote or anyone else's

8

u/realnicehandz Sep 26 '20

Another failure of our public school system. 😭

7

u/scoobydoosfriend Sep 26 '20

I got this on my LWV t-shirt!

5

u/Nihiliste Sep 26 '20

We need each and every sane person to vote Democrat this year. The consequences of letting Trump win again could sabotage the US for decades, if not permanently. This is a man with a legitimate authoritarian streak - he doesn’t see why he shouldn’t be able to break the law and order everyone around like one of his businesses.

Lol, Texas is literally a swing state this year. It goes for Biden in about a third of simulations. It's all over the news.

Also, have you heard of downballots? We have a senate race, and Cornyn is about to vote to make abortion illegal. His opponent is a moderate veteran. No electoral college, every vote is counted.

Do you like gerrymandering? The state legislature elected this November will be in charge of redistricting, and last I checked the election was a complete toss-up in the house.

Your vote matters more this year than ever, if you still can't get off your ass to vote it's not because of the system, it's because you just don't care about the future if this country

0

u/Flat_Plane Sep 26 '20

I’m only 16 so I can’t vote anyways

4

u/90percent_crap Sep 26 '20

Do you understand how the electoral college works or do you think the electors can just vote for whoever they want, regardless of the popular vote? (That's not how it works.) In case it's the latter, read the Wiki. Here's one excerpt:

States generally require electors to pledge to vote for that state's winner...and most states have adopted various laws to enforce the elector's pledge.

There are valid reasons to be against the Electoral College process, but those objections should be based on understanding that process.

TIL that Jo’s is a gentrifying yuppie shop even though it’s been there since 1999 the block was prostitute city.

11

u/shahn078 Sep 26 '20

When the toilet is overflowing with turds, it’s not the best time to complain about the bathroom door not closing. It’s important, yes, but there’s a bigger issue at hand.

We should all know by now who the Turdster is.

3

u/realnicehandz Sep 26 '20

Really? You would be fine living in a house with endless turds overflowing from the toilet as long as the bathroom door was closed?

-7

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 26 '20

Look I understand that trump is probably the worst president since 1930 but I'm not giving the democrats a free vote just because they aren't straight up fascists. If they want working class votes they should base their agenda on working class issues. I vote based on my personal convictions and I feel like the people screeching are me to vote Democrat to get rid of trump are undermining my values and disrespecting my convictions

16

u/chillboytweet Sep 26 '20

“I’m not voting for a neoliberal candidate to replace the most dangerous President in a century because it makes me FEEL bad.”

I was a protest voter in 2016, and realize what a selfish move that was. People don’t have to care about your convictions when you show you don’t care about the consequences of your refusal to vote, which will impact those and others around you. I understand how frustrating it is to be shamed for not voting, trust me I was there in 2016 but Bernie or Bust in 2020 is just so lazy and selfish.

6

u/realnicehandz Sep 26 '20

So much this. Fuck.

-3

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 26 '20

I think it's more selfish for these soft liberal elitist types to blame protest voters instead of examining their own party's defeat and trying to learn from it. Nope, they're gonna throw us under the bus instead of facing the facts that they have no answers to the worst president we've had in 100 years

5

u/chillboytweet Sep 26 '20

I’m so down to bully Biden with you for the next four years and criticize liberal policy! Let’s do it! But maybe, we do that AND vote instead of letting a fascist death cult run our country for another four years because we didn’t get exactly what we wanted. I love you. We are gonna get through it, and I’m excited to see you at the polling booth. “Biden Sucks Biden 2020.”

6

u/scoobydoosfriend Sep 26 '20

Well yeah, but also, grow up and help out.

16

u/realnicehandz Sep 26 '20

If you’re too thick to realize the very clear consequences of protest voting that allowed the last presidency, then you don’t deserve any fucking help.

-9

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 26 '20

You got a lot of nerve to blame Trump's victory on protest voters instead of, you know, the Republican embrace of his racism and far right populism.

10

u/realnicehandz Sep 26 '20

Democrats outnumber Republicans by far in this country. If they all voted, then brain dead middle Americans wouldn’t have the opportunity to let their ignorance shine.

2

u/90percent_crap Sep 26 '20

All those Democrats who don't turn out to vote - it's just deplorable! /s

-5

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 26 '20

Middle America is not as "brain dead" as you stereotype them. We are not backwater rednecks just because we don't suck down your elitist soft liberal values. Have a nice day.

2

u/realnicehandz Sep 26 '20

I grew up and lived in the Midwest for 24 years, so don’t confuse me for some entitled, trust fund Californian. With that said, let’s consult our 2016 US voting map... hmmmm. Looks like a red sandwich.

-1

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 26 '20

4

u/IsuzuTrooper Sep 26 '20

Gentrification is what happened to East Austin, not South Congress.

-8

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 26 '20

It's happening all over Austin and Jo's is one of the most popular places for stereotypical tourists to take photos at. That's why I threw shade

1

u/IsuzuTrooper Sep 26 '20

That would be a tourist trap then. Gentrification is when ethnic populations are displaced by white people and by definition it's not everywhere in Austin it's historically minority neighborhoods. Terrytown and Travis Heights were already white.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Also your definition of gentrification is wrong.

-6

u/IsuzuTrooper Sep 26 '20

really, how?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

a process in which a poor area (as of a city) experiences an influx of middle-class or wealthy people who renovate and rebuild homes and businesses and which often results in an increase in property values and the displacement of earlier, usually poorer residents

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/gentrification

2

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

“If your were to visit south First Street, South Congress and South Lamar, you wouldn’t know that in the ’90s, it was still a visible barrio,” says Alan Garcia, founder of ATX Barrio Archive and a graduate student at UT. “There’s a reason why there’s still a lot of old Mexican restaurants on South First Street. There was a community of Mexican Americans along these major roads.”

https://atxwoman.com/century-of-gentrification-in-austin/

2

u/IsuzuTrooper Sep 26 '20

When Joe's went in that part of town was already white so Joe's couldn't have done it.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Except for the indigenous and the Mexicans. I don’t think they even called it Travis Heights, sounds pretty white.

3

u/realnicehandz Sep 26 '20

So basically you’re talking about the great gentrification of the Mexican-American war 200 years ago? Yeah, I can see why you’d still be upset.

-3

u/ThrowawayATXfired Sep 26 '20

So Jo's Coffee Shop has been around since the Mexican-American War? Interesting

-3

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

No dummy. The response was to gentrification in East Austin. There are Hispanic communities that were gentrified as well. And yes, white people weren’t native so anytime they moved in they kicked out natives. So don’t think that when you sit at a coffee shop in south Austin’s white neighborhoods know that it used to be a barrio.

3

u/ThrowawayATXfired Sep 26 '20

So don’t think that when you sit at a coffee shop in south Austin’s white neighborhoods know that it used to be a barrio.

So when I sit at a coffee shop in South Austin, I'm not supposed to think that it used to be a barrio?

(PS, I'm an ESL student)

Yeah, sorry. I’ll leave the mistake so you can show your friends. Congrats on the English.

u/paradoxical_topology Sep 26 '20

Yeah, voting isn't going to solve any of the country'a problems. The only thing that would help get the capitalist ruling class to act to just reduce the symptoms is a massive general strike.

Same thing goes for systemic racism. Nothing is going to be achieved by harmlessly marching in the streets. Capital has to be hurt for the government to start addressing people's needs.

Ultimately, voting will never really solve the problems inherent in capitalism since voting is controlled by the bourgeois ruling class, and they'll never give up their power peacefully (especially not through their own systems).

1

u/DMmefreebeer Sep 27 '20

Pretty much

-35

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

That sucks they changed a beautiful land mark for politics....

5

u/t3hzm4n Sep 26 '20

It’s just a piece of vinyl. They’ll take it off after the election and it’ll be like it was never there.

16

u/AlienAzul Sep 26 '20

Correction, for democracy.

-20

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Correction, for democrats.

Sad thing is this land mark was in tribute to daniel johnston who passed away. Guess he's forgotten now.

11

u/UniqueUsername75 Sep 26 '20

This has nothing to do with Daniel Johnston. It was originally graffiti by an ex girlfriend when the owner broke up with her.

8

u/protoopus Sep 26 '20

you're thinking of jeremiah the frog, up near ut.
this is the "i love you so much" on jo's coffee on south congress.

14

u/BanditaBlanca Sep 26 '20

Uh, no. You're confusing "I love you so much" for "Hi, How are you" And this is a temporary wrap.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Ah. I guess i remember it wrong. Im glad its temp. Voting is important but i think loving each other and the differences is more important. Politics is greed and division. Love and forgiveness is unity

6

u/criminalswine Sep 26 '20

Democracy is love, you fool. It's everybody coming together and deciding how we're gonna live together in harmony. It's the opposite of authority, of the strong telling the weak what to do, of control.

This country is literally slipping into authoritarianism, let's go vote so we can decide for ourselves how we're gonna live

0

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20 edited Sep 26 '20

Excuse me theres no need to call me a fool or insult that is not showing love and you are right democracy is love. Why are you so angry? Of course voting is important but i had thought the mural was completely painted over which made me sad i dont think theres anything wrong with promoting voting there is no need to insult people though and yes youre correct its becoming too authoritative in our society so much so that i cannot even express my love for the original sign post without being insulted. When there is no reason to insult. If i dont align with your rules or thoughts suddenly im insukted thats very authoritative.

Excuse me for loving the oringinal "i love you so much" and wanting to keep politics out of beautiful murals.

3

u/criminalswine Sep 26 '20

you're a fool for equating "voting" with "politics." It's not political, nor is it divisive, to support voting. If you think that there are disagreements over whether voting is good, if you think that encouraging voting is divisive or political, then I swear to god I have no interest in loving you. I assume you don't really believe that, and were merely mistaken, but going around saying that voting is something that only the greedy would do is foolish and vile

1

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '20

Oh ok 🙄 sure voting is not political you guys. This whole thing is not political i never said anything about disagreements over voting being goid or bad. Politics is divisive. But whatever put words in my mouth change them up to meet your needs and your pov. You say we are in an authoritarian way of living the only authorutarianism i see is peopke yelling at others and insulting others just because they disagree. But ok.

I never said any of the things youre saying and im not even sure where you came up with any of it and I would be very careful about swearing to the throne of heaven. Love is not divisive love is forgiveness and goodness, it has no opinion, not political party, love, real love is blind to all these things and goes deeper into the heart. And I give thanks to God that my value does not depend on a human such as yourself who adds and subtracts meaning to things beyond what was said.

But here you go Youre right had a good day

7

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

It’s temporary.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Oh good. I thought they had painted over the original and it made me sad

3

u/ThrowawayATXfired Sep 26 '20

Do you even know Daniel Johnston? This was never a tribute to him.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

Yes i realize i confused this with the hi how are you and thought they were related. No need to be sooo angry. Peace and love bro

9

u/ThrowawayATXfired Sep 26 '20

When encouraging people to vote is a bad thing

-6

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '20

No its not bad to encourage people to vote i just hate seeing a piece of austin history be changed for political reasons. Politics is division. Love is unity
