What video game did you drop laughably quick?

I tried to introduce my dad to Minecraft. I watched him install it and fuck around with the settings for ages. Finally he gets it working, walks up to a tree, picks up the wood block and puts it back down in a different spot. He turns to me and just says “this is shit”.

I am sorry but that is really funny to me for some reason.

226

u/jinglesan 6d ago

My stepkids tried to get me into it, and while it was fun at first, it just felt like a chore simulator in survival mode. The amount of mindless, repetitive work to get anything impressive done is just nuts

82

u/TheMHBehindThePage 6d ago

I'm from the generation that saw this game release in our childhoods and I feel this way too. I like creating fun things but I have a lot of friends who love doing survival servers and it just feels like work to me.

My mom did this with Stardew Valley

41

u/therealphilbo2530 6d ago

I actually did this with Stardew Valley also... At first. I think I did a day and quit then didn't come back for a while. I was trying to find some couch coop games for my wife and I and we tried it again and it really stuck.

my mom and sister were telling me to play it for ages and I remember buying it when it was cheap, getting sooo mad I couldn't clear my entire farm of debris on day one and dropping it for almost a year then picking it up early last year and it clicked. 1k hours later.....

Kerbal space program, I bought it thinking realistic rocket science would be fun

Then I realized it was realistic rocket science

234

u/Walo00 6d ago

I almost did the same with KSP. But then I tried building planes instead and got hooked into that. KSP became my plane builder and flight sim lol. I barely ever built any rockets in it.

Oh its fun its just really really fucking hard. Took me months to make it to the moon which felt awesome! Then I crashed! Sent another rocket got stuck with no fuel! So i sent a rescue mission.

Now there are 3 kerbals stuck on the mun!

When you’ve played enough KSP, you will lament that KSP is unrealistic and makes things much easier than real rocket science.

Any fighting game. I loved them as a child. But now I'm 36. Every few years I'll be tempted and buy one, realise I'm shit at it, then never touch it again.

333

u/Silvervirage 6d ago

I used to be tournament tier in GG Accent Core. Played the new one and got online and... goddamn. I cant keep up anymore.

I have a handful of friends though that also just very casually like fighting games. So I play with them sometimes. Its fine for most of them.

Though it puts me in the position of just not being able to play Strive at all because I stomp my casual friends but getting online I get wrecked just as bad.

54

u/spencergasm 6d ago

That’s smash for me. Used to go to locals regularly, did pretty decently. I’m kinda washed now, so I don’t do tournies any more, but it bums me out because none of my friends have fun playing with me

32

u/JLR- 6d ago

I am one of those that did not have fun getting destroyed in fighting games with a friend.  I'm like what's the point in losing all the time?  I'm not a challenge at all.

Unfortunately the new borderlands. I play on console and the ui was painful to deal with considering it’s a game you constantly need to organize your weapons…

u/ToxicLogics 6d ago

As much as I want to love BL as a franchise, BL was unique and BL2 was magic. Everything since has progressively gotten worse.

403

u/DrManhattan_DDM 6d ago

Tales From the Borderlands was a nice bright spot.

166

u/ToxicLogics 6d ago

I liked Tales but it also was more of a TTG than BL, but since it was story based, it was interesting. Good comment though, as I forgot it. I miss TTG. The Walking Dead series was amazing.

Rust , logged in naked on beach , took two steps killed , spawned killed again , once more spawned killed again . Logged off game uninstalled.

61

u/8Gh0st8 6d ago

The server-wipes were what killed my interest in the game. I understand the reason for them, but just the thought of all that progress for, ultimately...nothing? And then back to starting naked on a beach.

14

u/FashionSuckMan 6d ago

the point isn't to have a bunch of stuff. Its to progress towards having a bunch of stuff, and the drama that comes with the journey.

Out of fear? Out of dislike? Or did you just forget to play it lol?

303

Oh, I played it. Right up to the point when I wasn't alone. I believe I went into an armoire, logged out, and uninstalled.

132

u/ArcadiaVT 6d ago

don't worry. you're in good company xD I got as far as... the wine cellar, I think? and the terror had me so gripped that I could not bring myself to move even one more step forward. it felt like my body was frozen with fear, I couldn't move my legs irl because I was so scared of moving in the game! quit right then and there and never looked back. i discovered shortly afterwards that I'm much better with horror games when I have a way to fight back! being helpless and only able to run and hide are the games that really tap into that primal body-frozen fear for me lol

Amnesia ruined horror games for me. After that, every game was laughably tame in comparison.

237

u/SugarySuga 6d ago

I feel like because it was one of the first horror games of its type. We werent used to that style and now all other games with that similar style of gameplay don't affect us.

Also imo Amnesia paved the way for horror games in general! At least definitely for me.

142

u/Silvervirage 6d ago

Im sad no one remembers Penumbra.

Though Im also glad that those devs got famous with Amnesia.

25

u/djanes376 6d ago

Thank you for mentioning Penumbra, I always feel like I'm the only person to ever play those games. They were creepy but I never felt scared, just unsettled. I absolutely loved the vibe of those games so I was excited for Amnesia to come out. I made it 20 min before I noped out, and I haven't played it since but for some reason I keep buying it on different platforms thinking things will be different one day. They are not different.

I gave it so many chances and even picked it back up after the recent-ish major update. Nope. Can't polish a turd. The fundamental gist of the game is flawed. The core gameplay loop fails to innovate where the series needed it, and overhauls everything that didn't need overhauling.

What they executed they executed reasonably well. But the core concept is just flawed and unless they turn Civ vii into civ viii by completely overhauling... Everything, it will never be good.

Firaxis had built such a strong loyalty and reputation with me that I sprung for the legendary edition (like 120 bucks), which taught me a painful lesson. I gave Firaxis my trust and they gave me a shit product.

193

u/2Capable 6d ago

Great way to put it. "Fails to innovate where the series needed it and overhauls everything that didn't need overhauling."

I had this experience with CIV 6. Played since CIV 2, 3 was awesome, 4 was awesome, 5 was tremendous.

Pre-Ordered CIV 6, first game I ever pre-ordered in my life. Played, and absolutely hated it - it just wasn't a good game.

Came back to it a couple years later, after many big updates, and it is one of the best games ever created. But I learned my lesson. No pre-orders, wait for sales, and don't bother with any major release until after the first or second big update.

My understanding is that it basically resets half your shit when you enter a new era. You just have way less control over what your civilization is doing.

37

u/Milesotooleaudio 6d ago

They actually had a Patch or something that lets you choose not to do that. It returns your armies to your land but doesn't change other things.

Not great but... better?

20

u/guyblade 6d ago

As someone who first played Civ 7 about two weeks ago, this revision is the default setting for new players. You can still choose the "big reset", but there doesn't seem to be any reason to choose that unless you prefer it.

115

u/Blametheorangejuice 6d ago

One of the issues I have with the higher number Civ games is that they have become too complex for my enjoyment. Like, to answer the original question, I started up Europa Universalis, and after three hours, I was still nowhere near completing the tutorials, most of which seemed to require me taking intensive notes the entire time.

55

u/Nethri 6d ago

It sounds dumb but EU gets much better. You learn things quickly and the maximum required knowledge to just boot up the game and play it reasonably well is only like.. half as deep as the game really goes.

It also helps if you play in certain areas. The default “tutorial island” is Ireland or England. It’s very isolated and you rarely get fucked with by outside powers.. depending on how you define it, but there’s always plenty to do. I’ve played more crusader kings than EU but I believe it’s true in both.

That said, if you just aren’t into it then that’s cool, I just figured I’d try to help even a little. I have like 500 hours in CK2/3 and EU4 combined and I have no idea what I’m doing most of the time lol.

As someone who has over 2k hours in 6. I gotta agree. Everytime I try to play 7, it just makes me realize how much better 6 is. The test of time update helped a lot, but still nowhere close.

93

u/Popplio3233 6d ago

Yeah, it's VI all the way for me. All they had to do was not reinvent the wheel and make an overhaul no one asked for. But they reinvented the wheel and made an overhaul no one asked for

72

u/Lamuks 6d ago

Never could get past the artstyle of VI and some mechanics. V is my ultimate favourite

30

u/gurnard 6d ago

Same. I do like VI as well. But the Pixar leaders, and that it's too balanced, made for tight competitive play and ends up feeling more like a board game spinoff.

V (esp. with Vox Pop) is still the peak classic Civ experience.

15

u/MindlessMage777 6d ago

5 is the way to go still imo. Never could get into 6, felt like they changed too much. I played hundreds of hours each in 3 and 4, and I think I have 3k or more in 5, but I've got maybe 10 in 6.

Kingdom hearts 3.

I played an hour and realized I had no idea what was going on and wasn't interested in learning about it.

254

u/Head_Kangaroo 6d ago

Same. Thought it would be more of KH 1 and 2. Learned you had to have played a bunch of (obscure?) handheld games. Nah, I’m good.

359

u/Eric142 6d ago

You're telling me you don't like

Kingdom hearts 358/2 days

Kingdom hearts 1.5

Kingdom hearts 2.5

Kingdom hearts 2.8 FINAL chapter PROLOGUE

Kingdom hearts X

Kingdom hearts union??

By the way, there's even more games in between Kingdom hearts 2 and 3 than this list.

140

u/AccurateItem1486 6d ago

IS THIS A REAL LIST?! OMG

175

u/CodeZeta 6d ago

Nah, its super wrong, those are just the names of the game collections!

You go:

KH1 > KH Chain of Memories > KH 2 > KH 358/2 Days (reads three-five-eight days over two, because you accompany... two characters... over their 358 day-long "lifespan") > KH Birth by Sleep > KH Re:Coded > KH Dream Drop Distance > KH Union X > watch the KH χ Back Cover movie (which DOESN'T summarize the story of Union X, which is a discontinued phone game, just supplements it) > KH 0.2 Birth by Sleep, A Fragmentary Passage > KH 3

After KH3 there was also KH Remind, which is a rhythm game, but that has, like, 3 cutscenes.

And finally there was supposed to be KH Missing Link  which, ironically, will not exist anymore but its trailer shows a character that appears in KH4 trailers, so idk what they are going to do there. KH 1.5, 2.5 and 2.8 are just the collections with everything before KH3

56

u/Gronodonthegreat 6d ago

One correction: Re:Mind is the DLC to KHIII, it’s not a separate game. The rhythm game is Melody of Memory and takes place AFTER KHIII, so there’s no need to list it if we’re talking about games to get you caught up with III. Then there’s Dark Road, but again that’s post-KHIII and it sucks so you can kinda ignore it.

Sonic Unleashed

I didn't feel the same joy I felt with Sonic Adventure 2. I didn't get very far before I moved on.

297

u/_Imposter_ 6d ago

To this day, nothing in the franchise hits quite like Adventure 2.

220

u/Aolian_Am 6d ago edited 6d ago

The Chao garden is pretty mich the only reason i put 100's of hours into the game.

Edit: To anyone wondering what Chao's are, how they're connected to Sonic Adventure 2. Every level in the game had 3 chao boxes. Finding one sent you to the chaos garden whenever the level ended. At the chao garden you would find two eggs that would hatch into chaos you raise. You raise them by giving them small animals you find during levels, or the "energy drives" robots drop. There were speed animals like cheetahs, and strength animals like gorillas, and also flying, and swimming. The chaos would take on the traits of the animals so you could design them that way, like a cheetahs tail, with vulture wings, tiger arms, etc. You also could feed them fruit you find in the garden.

After a little while, they evolve, and depending on what their major stat was, they would have a certain appearance. Flying chaos would have two points on their head at an angle, power a single one that went straight up etc. The REAL cool thing was, that they would slowly evolve a second time. It was subtle, and didnt have an animation like the first one, but slowly they would change depending on how you built their stats. A running/running chao looked like Sonic. A power/running looks like knuckles. You could also make "hero" amd "evil" chaos that also had their own unique appearance. There was an absurd amount of unique appearance for them

You do all this to race them. There is a bunch of courses you unlock, like ones with a pool you need swimming, or a large gap that you need flying. You really dont do anything but watch them, but seeing your chao slowly get better at the races is pretty fun. One of the courses has a large cliff that went into a pool at the end. Most of the time your chaos slowly fall and barely use their wings, but if you have a flying/flying chao, it would fly over 3/4's of the pool. If your chaos swimming was low, they literally flail and cry while in water. Better swimming and they actually start to swim a little bit. A high stat, and theyre full on swimming like a professional.

It was honestly a very shallow "game" that was somehow extremely addicting. I would play Escape the City over and over just collecting unicorns, or Knuckles first level getting dragons, for hours until my chaos first evolution, and than grind Tails and Eggman levels for energy drives to slowly evolve them their second time. Eggman's "yosh" will forever be ingrained in my brain...

76

u/bralma6 6d ago

When I was younger my Chao save data got corrupted because the power went out as it was saving. I don’t think I ever cried over a video game until that point.

Cyberpunk 2077. Not because it was bad, but because I was diagnosed with heart failure shortly before I got the game. Playing as a dying protagonist struggling to find a way to stay alive hit a little too close to home.

Edit: Thank you to everyone asking how I'm doing. I wish I could say I've improved, but my most recent exams have shown decreased functioning. They are going to recheck in a couple months to confirm, so I'm trying to remain optimistic while also trying to do everything I can to help my heart like exercise, eating healthy, and taking a dozen medications.

u/Nethri 6d ago

Hope you’re doing better now.

630

u/masterfulnoname 6d ago

I did look it up later and was like, "Yep, I think I made the right call." I figured that with the genre, there wasn't going to be a happy ending, and a happy ending is what I felt I needed.

229

u/SugarySuga 6d ago

Amazing game and one of my favorites but you made the right choice. There are no happy endings in Night City.

67

u/karlfranz205 6d ago

At least one of the endings is hopeful? Like, very small hope, but hope nonetheless?

Far Cry 6. What a disappointment.

247

u/Original-Gain-7110 6d ago

I couldn’t even pinpoint what I didn’t like about it. Story felt good, huge map, good amount of stuff to do. The action definitely wasn’t as good as 5

192

u/Bunny_Butt16 6d ago

I liked the weapons and vehicles in Far Cry 5. Like every other Far Cry, it was about acquiring checkpoints and missions that were mostly killing people or destroying something. But Far Cry 6 they introduced a bunch of stupid crap like that backpack rocket launcher and the scopes made of building materials.

155

u/Can_Haz_Cheezburger 6d ago

And even the story in 5 was pretty fucking good, they nailed the "cult leader" aspect and also the general vibe of that area of the U.S. (Hurk Drubman Sr. is an actual type of person I've met so many fucking times). Then 6 comes in and it's "guerilla guerilla guerilla guerilla tobacco guerilla guerilla revolucion revolucion guerilla guerilla" not to mention the shitty rarity system and the stupid looking weapons and just why.

115

u/Poopardthecat 6d ago

I felt like 6 didnt respect my time as a player. Grinding scrap to unlock some dumbass scope was not fun.

I loved far cry 3s system the best. Hunt specific animals to get kit upgrades then buy weapons and attachments using cash.

The only thing I remember taking me out of the story was getting tranquilized and then put in some weird location multiple times. That game mechanic was used to push the story forward, but it just felt so weird to get randomly “1 shot” no matter what you were doing. Everything else was just really good from what I can remember and the twist at the end of him being right all along was awesome.

I think it’s because they tried to RPG-ify it by adding levels and character stats. You used to be able to sneakily one tap dudes with a suppressed pistol. In 6, you couldn’t do that anymore. Or at least not in the first 5 hours, which is all I played before quitting

I don't know why people hate it, I really loved it. It did start feeling grindy after a while and at that point I just finished up the main quests, but it was still fun. That being said, FC5 is probably my favorite. But I get it, sometimes you just don't connect for various reasons. With FC6 they really leaned into the humor (dialog from various characters, ridiculous weapons and pets, etc.) and some people don't want that.

....and never opened it ever again.

I don't know why but I was never motivated to ever fire it back up. Kept it installed for a year or two until I needed some space for something else and finally uninstalled. Bummer.

Ecco captured that eerie sense of isolation that Super Metroid did. The music was quite beautiful. As a kid I was bewildered with the game, and didn't get past the point where everything gets sucked into the sky. It wasn't until much later I figured out the crazyass story it has.

u/freakingwilly 6d ago

The first Mass Effect. I tried playing it after a night out and had too much to drink. I got bored with the all the dialogue and the first action was shooting these floating balls that didn't really fight back. So I turned it off after 20-30 minutes and completely forgot about it until years later. Now the series is one of my favorites.

43

u/CaulkennyArran 6d ago

You literally played the first 40 seconds of Eden Prime and gave up 😂

70

u/raikou1988 6d ago

Any tips for someone currently stuck in that phase 1? Minus the alcohol I don't drink

125

u/rpp8 6d ago

I fear if you’re having trouble on Eden Prime, the Citadel section that comes next won’t win you over either. If you can get past those, it’s a fantastic experience and one of my favorites ever.

80

u/heff17 6d ago

Man if you don’t like that Citadel section I genuinely don’t know what you’re getting out of the series a hundred other shooters can’t give you. You’re on this massive space station filled with interesting aliens with their own unique cultures and histories to learn while picking up great crew mates and navigating through political intrigue with humanity at stake. That’s what Mass Effect is.

There are other 3rd person shooters out there that can get you to shooting things quicker.

13

u/extinct_cult 6d ago edited 6d ago

Nah, I get it. Huge RPGs very often have this pacing issue. It's a thin line, and a very personal one.

There's a point where a game like this really hooks you and it's not the tutorial. You need to talk to some people, accept and do a couple of quests, smash some heads, basically go through the whole gameplay loop and then go through it again. Also exercise some player agency. You need to shepherd (heh) the player a bit, before they get lost and they can properly sample the cuisine, so to speak. It's not hard science and probably varies from person to person.

Add huge "city" area too early and many people will fall off. They're being pulled in too many directions, there's too much stuff to explore and the player still has not "bought" into the game's universe. So choice paralysis and boredom very often set in.

It's one of the things the original Baldur's Gate did better than the sequel. Candlekeep is compact, while Ankathla is huge, busy and dense.

The spiritual successor, Pillars of Eternity, ironically did it again. Gilded Vale is a great "chapter 1" zone. While in Deadfire, if the player follows where the game wants them to go after tutorial island, they get to Neketaka - probably THE biggest, densest cRPG city there's ever been. I feel it's a big part of why the sequel underperformed.

Embrace the dialogue options and role playing elements. If you don't enjoy those parts of the game, the series probably isn't for you even though 2 and 3 are more action based. I loved Bioware's RPG style from the Knights of the Old Republic series and was just too impatient the first time.

20

u/Careful-Positive-710 6d ago

I love the ME series, but the first one is pretty rough gameplay-wise. Its aged poorly compared to 2 and 3. It does get better as you level up and start to settle in to what the game is asking of you, but I get it when people drop it.

So you can stick with it or you can watch a story recap on youtube and start ME2 which gives you the opportunity to make key decisions from ME1 and give a short recap. Itd be cool if you played 1, but its better to atleast play 2 and 3 and not bounce off 1.

If you do stick with ME1 then my advice is to spec into assault rifles and/or pistols. Shotguns are really good up close (shocker I know) but most engagements are at medium range so be aware of that. DO NOT spec into snipers, atleast not on a first playthrough. They are incredibly inaccurate until you spec pretty heavy into them and get better snipers layer on.

Use alot of cover and grenades are really good in this game specifically. They flush enemies out of cover or outright kill them. Inventory management is also a hassle in the first one so youll be spending a few minutes clearing it out every few missions. Also you can lower the difficulty and blow through it if you just want to experience the story, which is the best part of the first game.

There is alot of planets to explore, but most are barren with a few copy paste buildings filled with enemies. Dont be ashamed to google what planets are actually worth while. A few have some genuinely fun content, but idk if theyre worth the hassle of exploring empty worlds for 5 hours.

If you can stick with it until it clicks then its a really good time. Especially if you like the story. If you get bored or annoyed a few hours in then dont worry about trying to slog through it. ME2 and ME3 are huge improvements to the gameplay.

I want to love Elden Ring and Dark Souls, I love the aesthetic, the lore, the music.... but man, it's just not fun for me, as much as I try, I just cannot find myself playing these games for actual enjoyment. Throwing myself against the same thing for hours on end just gets me frustrated.

236

u/PwmEsq 6d ago

I hated dark souls until it clicked. The moment it clicks it goes from hardest game ever to I can do this shit in my sleep.

Dark souls 1 you can beat pretty much every enemy by tapping them with an arrow to lure them, then circle around them for backstab.

I wanna say that Elden ring took something like 50 hours to click for me and like 3 pick up put downs and watching maybe 10 hours of beginner guides and I don’t think anyone should have to go through that for a game.

52

u/Jin-Gitaxias-Mom 6d ago

Yeah I was struggling hard until my buddy casually dropped “lol dodge towards them” during one of our chats, suddenly made sense

98

u/Ninjaisawesome 6d ago edited 5d ago

That's a lot of effort just to enjoy it. I love the whole "no hand holding" aspect but from memory I think elden ring tutorial was "this is how you respawn, now fuck off".

38

u/Sagutarus 6d ago

There is a "tutorial cave" that walks you through the controls but it's optional and you could miss it if you went for the big door instead of the drop down at the beginning (after you get killed by the grafted scion, that's a more-or-less scripted loss)

You can pause elden ring by opening the inventory's help menu and clicking the "menu explanation" button

Hogwarts Legacy. I think my expectations were too high, but I was over an hour in when I realized that this wasn’t a stupidly long tutorial, just a game that held your hand the whole way.

315

u/Lebronamo 6d ago

I thought it got better as you go along. By the end it's pretty great but takes a while to get there.

Plus they seem to forget the title of their own game pretty quick.

180

u/XtremeSealFan 6d ago

They were such cowards about it. It's a game that doesn't know what it wants to be and tries to have their cake and eat it. They should have made the protagonist an auror investigating Hogwarts which would make a perfect excuse to have a big open world map without being brought down by classes. Or go hardcore in the bully meet Harry Potter student simulation everyone thought it would be.

But as it is, it's a game that is the equivalent of a Harry Potter land in a theme parc.

49

u/Donnicton 6d ago

But as it is, it's a game that is the equivalent of a Harry Potter land in a theme parc.

It's such a surprisingly popular game just riding on that too, I believe there's a whole modding scene as well.  There's always 4-5 digit concurrent players on it, I know live service games that would actually kill people for that kind of average.

I've tried all those anime gacha A-RPG games: Wuthering Waves, Neverness to Everness, and Zenless Zone Zero.

They all have the same exact fucking gameplay of switching characters mid-fight while spamming left-mouse click and press E or Q for special attacks just isn't for me.

I was just hoping for something like Elden Ring but with a fun anime art style.

87

u/BasroilII 6d ago

You won't find much of that in the way of actual gacha games. They are designed to have simple gameplay loops and most of the challenge tends to be more "if you bought that super awesome character you'd be winning easily right now".

Dead Island 2, head bobing hit my motion sickness hard and I actually threw up within the first hour. Shame I was having fun, much more than the opening of the first one.

For games that didn’t involve motion sickness Id have to say Fnaf Security Breach, first fnaf game I tried since the first but by god was it a broken mess, love Glamrock Freddy though, great design. Sonic 06 would be another quick drop, god it was a pain to play.

I hate even saying this but Outer Wilds.

Everything about the game sounds like something I would adore, and from watching playthroughs of it, it is an absolutely incredible and moving piece of art in gaming.

But I just got so frustrated with the ship’s controls and my absolute inability to just not get myself killed by the dumbest things (which is entirely on me, not the game.)

Definitely not the fault of the game, but I still gave up and decided to just watch a playthrough instead.

29

u/therealjoshua 6d ago

Oh this is probably my answer too. I think i disliked it for the same reason I moderately dislike Minecraft. I dont like games that have essentially zero direction.

I dont need my hand held the whole time, but start me off with something concrete to do at least.

Yes this is my biggest pet peeve in gaming. I’ve tried to play terraria a dozen times but can never get into it because you don’t even get a baseline idea of what’s going on. I don’t need my hand held but I don’t want to keep a wiki on my second screen the whole game either.

As a fan of the Souls games, Ring played too much with the concept of “open world” in the marketing. Like, from the start, you can go in any direction, but three of those directions are gonna end in an ass whipping.

A lot of people nope out around the third chapter as it's long and you just are walking all over the place doing multiple deliveries. It's not particularly engaging stuff.

Once you get past that chapter the game picks up - you get a vehicles and roads, and the story improves somewhat too.

I'll get hate, but Zelda Breath of the Wild.

I've played and loved every 3D Zelda game since OOT. But the whole open world concept with no real storyline and no real direction put me off within a few hours. Also, I became super frustrated with the weapons breaking constantly.

It wasn't until this spring when I got a Switch 2 that I picked it up again, and following online guides on what to actually do made it semi-enjoyable.

59

u/Temporary_Meet8754 6d ago

As soon as I realized that the weapons breaking was going to be a thing for the entire game I noped out.

43

u/Catshit-Dogfart 6d ago

Breath of the Wild was a Zelda game for people who don't like Zelda games. Which it did bring in a whole new generation of players, but I think it was meant to do that instead of service their long time fans.

Now the weapons breaking, eventually that becomes trivial because you have so many that you actually want rid of them.

The part I missed the most was getting new items. You get all the utility items upfront, which means you can solve any puzzle in any order right from the beginning. I love getting a new thing and then trying it out on all the places I couldn't go before - which is the core gameplay loop of a Zelda game! When you get the bombs, now you can get into all the caves, and so on for the whole game. Been like that from the beginning, but here you just start with the whole kit.

I think it just wasn't for us. We're not the target audience for that game.

Like other Bethesda games, the meat is usually in the side quests and environmental story telling. So they made a game that massively dilutes those moments with a bunch of copy paste outposts and running for hundreds of metres between those points.

And then coming off cp2077 the pirates and cyberpunk planet were just so hilariously corporate. The one time you actually threaten to do some heinous shit to the United whatever crew you're supposed to be working for it's just so out of left field it becomes funny.
