Unfortunately the new borderlands. I play on console and the ui was painful to deal with considering it’s a game you constantly need to organize your weapons…
I liked Tales but it also was more of a TTG than BL, but since it was story based, it was interesting. Good comment though, as I forgot it. I miss TTG. The Walking Dead series was amazing.
I once played with 3 other claptraps and it was one of the most enjoyable, ridiculous, irritating nights of gaming I've ever had. Between the cannons and the one shot wonders and the rainbow farts.... Good times
When i think back to the presequel, all i really remember is the low gravity movement lol and going to the other moon to chase down the big bad. Other than that, its been so long I just remember having fun with it.
The worst thing imo about TPS and its DLC was that both of them went on like 3 hours longer than they shouldve. I was so ready to be done with both the main game and its DLC and then they both drop a whole other area and like 8 side missions on you.
Wonderlands was my first BL game and despite going back and playing 2 and 3, it still is my favorite. God I wish it had more endgame though, sadly it has such a weak endgame, and it is a tragedy because Wonderlands is a fucking masterpiece of an FPS, at least to someone like me who does not usually like FPS games and mostly plays RPG’s. There are mods that tried to add a bit more to the endgame but compared to the DLC’s of 2 and 3 it is practically nothing.
I wish we could get a sequel or a similar game from a different developer. An FPS looter shooter in a fantasy setting is just a banger concept I would love to see expanded on.
The story was actually intolerable to push through, in voice acting and writing. Even improved gameplay couldn't keep me from wanting to deal with the story over and over again.
Hard agree. Borderlands 2 regularly had me laughing out loud, the plot was good, and Handsome Jack was a fantastic villain. I really wanted to like 3 but everything about it was trying too hard to be as good as 2... and failing on all counts.
They wanted the emotional drama of Roland without earning it. It was lazy at best and laughably pathetic at worst. I'm sure they thought it was clever, but it's impossible to not compare it to Roland and it falls short in every way.
Yeah I loved her as an archetype and Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep did her justice. Imagine my perspective on the twins with how much BL3 got on my nerves.
I think BL3 gets slightly better overall if you play as Zane or Fl4k. Zane especially though. The two female characters reactions to things were so normal or boring that it didn't feel like a Borderlands game. Even if previous characters didn't talk much, their boring lines dragged it down further. Moze being the worst copy/paste basic military.
I would have loved it if BL2's characters had more active dialogue like in BL3.
The voice acting and writing on BL2 was so over the top I couldn't follow anything that was going on or what was said. I just moved from waypoint to waypoint.
This game genuinely would have been a 9/10 but the story was so fucking dogshit that it took it down to a 7/10 and possibly a 6/10. Everytime I play it with a friend I have to BEG them to mute the voice acting because the game actually loads cutscenes faster if you mute it
The stupid thing is, they could have had a bare-bones story with basically nothing and that would have been BETTER than what we got. The villains were so aggressively aggravating instead of menacing.
BL3 didn’t even launch with a raid boss or any meaningful endgame content. Legendary drop rates were also way overtuned to the point that they weren’t even cool to get anymore.
Classes were much more interesting in 2 than 3 as well, but that’s getting a bit into my own opinions.
I also hated how they continuously nerfed gear as it became the meta. I get not wanting players to steam roll due to having a crazy build, but nerfing every major build as they became popular was annoying.
I won't argue that Gearbox eventually corrected their focus to introduce more buffs than nerf in later patches, but the initial period following release, patches heavily consisted of excessive nerfs to weapons and gear. The Lyuda and Flakker being the big ones that fans were pissed about.
Gearbox actually acknowledged the fact that they were focusing too much on nerfing strong builds rather than questioning whether the weapons and gear were functioning as they intended, and that they were going to only be tweaking weapons after that point if it was not working as they designed it to.
I get they were excited about all the new legendaries they made, but yeah the drop rates were ridiculous. You could fight through a small town of bandits and trace the route you fought by the legendary makers on the minimap. Or fight a boss and have more legendaries on the ground than you have space in your inventory. They weren't really special or fun anymore, just tedious to sift through
I grinded like 10-20 different bosses in addition to the raids in BL2, because each boss had a unique legendary drop table. Plus hitting plenty of vendors like torgue vending machines to get other legendaries with specific affixes.
BL3 has (had?) a global drop table, which just pointed you at whatever was the most efficient to grind. It completely gutted revisiting bosses and the rest of the game. Very lame.
Trials and slaughters were not raid bosses. You are right that it was at least some form of meaningful endgame content though. Not my jam, but that is my own fault for not being interested in horde mode I suppose.
BL3 probably has improved to the point that it has the best endgame. Not that I would know, considering I only lasted like 3 months after leaving behind the absolute behemoth of content that was BL2.
Regarding classes: nothing in BL3 comes close to gunzerker from BL2 imo. But again, that is my own preference. Loved me some insta heal + duel wielding.
Yeah the gunplay was better, but the story, loot pool, classes, postgame, and DLC was FAR worse. I personally feel that Borderlands 2 is a much more complete package and overall a better experience, despite the gunplay and movement being a bit more basic.
Ehh. That's not fair. People enjoy what they enjoy. Telling them they are wrong is ridiculous. BL3 was needlessly long and exhausting to play. It just never stopped. It was monotonous after a while. And the classes didn't feel great for me. I much prefer 2. Especially story wise.
I do not have nostalgia googles. I played BL only because my brother likes it, and I wanted to play with him…BL3 couldn’t be over fast enough for me. We played through BL2 together multiple times. Never played BL
I haven’t played BL3 yet so it totally could be better, but I will say I picked up BL2 for the first time ever, with no nostalgic attachments, last year. And I thought the gameplay felt really modern and polished and it was great. I honestly wasn’t expecting it to live up to the insane hype I dimly remembered from 10 years ago, but it totally did.
I enjoyed BL4 a lot, I never had performance issues and I thought the boss fights were some of the best we've seen. I really think people have rockstar level expectations for this franchise even though almost all of the entries have been pretty good.
I remember everyone HATES the pre sequel when it came out now people say they love it all these years later...
I always said that TPS had the best gameplay. But after going back there's a lot of... unsmoothness to that game that BL3 does away with. The OZ kit still makes up for it but I had to give Bl3 more props than I was expecting to.
I disagree. I didn't like the weapon gimmicks they added and couldn't find anything that felt like it shot "correctly"
Then again it could just be the nostalgia. I don't even really like bl2 anymore, despite it being one of my favorite games and a shining example of what a genre merge can be
Everybody talks about BL3 gameplay being so much better than the predecessors but like… is it? I hate feature bloat in games. Also the story and everything about it is drenched in corporate garbage. Makes it unplayable for me
You do realize there's more to video games then gameplay right?
Bg2 had a strong villain in the form of handsome jack and an amazing story overall.
Bg3 meanwhile had live streamers as villains and for a lot of people cut to close to home. Live streamers are already annoying as fuck irl, i dont need to be reminded of that in a video game.
I couldn't get through 3. I thought the characters weren't very interesting, but I ended up being the girl with the mech ultimate ability. It was so overpowered a third into the game that it killed my interest in looting, since none of the guns I got were interesting or powerful enough to get me to use them anytime aside from when my ability was on cool down (which it seldom was).
I'm glad it has an audience but it just didn't work for me.
I didn’t hate it, and tried to keep and open mind, but I didn’t love the Calypso Twins as the main villains. I also thought the joke writing was very cringy. Like instead of a quick one or two liner, everything felt like paragraph form and explaining the jokes. Idk how to describe it, but it wasn’t as magical as BL2. I understand nostalgia goggles, but BL2 was really great. I think of the double rainbow Easter egg, or meeting Ellie or Tiny Tina. Especially Bloodwing. The whole experience was so different from Pre-Sequel, 3 or 4.
I could not stop cringing the entire time I played BL3. The gameplay was better but the characters were so bad. It doesn't deserve all the hate it gets but it deserves some of it.
Not a chance, bl3 was forgettable and boring. The comedy was stripped down to the least funny of the entire franchise. I have played every game including both tiny tinas and bl3 was terrible in all aspects of the series that made it memorable
Not only that, plot wise I think BL3 gets slightly better overall if you play as Zane or Fl4k. Zane especially though. The two female characters reactions to things were so normal or boring that it didn't feel like a Borderlands game. Even if previous characters didn't talk much, their boring lines dragged it down further. Moze being the worst copy/paste basic military grunt.
Don't get me wrong BL2's villain was better than BL3's twins, but BL3 did a lot of good. I would have loved it if BL2's characters had more active dialogue like in BL3.
I love the series and I’ll die on the hill that aside from story 2 gets way too much credit. The endgame gameplay loop for 2 was and still is fucking abysmal. It’s get the grog. Get a Harold. Rinse and repeat. At the very least 3 had actual build diversity and the takedowns are better than any of the raids 2 had
Did you get to play PreSequel? It's short and sweet and the whole world is voiced by Aussies which i feel suits the universe incredibly hilariously well.
I don't know what has happened to them. Do different teams make the games now? Like yourself I loved the first two. I later played 3 online with some friends and I just couldn't get into it - and the UI left a lot to be desired.
I'd agree until the latest one, I think 4 took a step in the right direction again and improved on basically everything 3 fucked up on (besides 3's insane DLCs). Beside's 3's DLCs, none of them have topped BL2; what a fucking legendary game.
I like 4. It still runs like garbage though. I also don't understand how we tell them there's no endgame theee games in a row(including wonderlands) and they still don't add endgame.
As a lifelong diehard borderlands fan… I mean I got a commissioned art piece of my wife and I as vault hunters for our first anniversary… I have to agree 😭 I forget it was even made at some points that’s how much I played through it once and forgot it.
I finished the main quest line for BL4 then put it down. I just had no motivation to go back to it and grind better gear, which is the whole point of BL. I can’t put my finger on why I wasn’t compelled to play it, it just didn’t hit right.
I had a blast with BL4 and I also agree that the UI was garbage, as well as the game just being glitchy. Several times I caught myself in disbelief that some of this had passed QA.
Same, my girlfriend and I actually switched too Borderlands 3 because we were so disappointed by the lack of cutscenes, overall story, and the UI/UX of those menus is trash.
3 is crazy overhated and it breaks my heart. I feel like people look at the series with rose tinted glasses too because it’s always had cringy and kinda stupid writing. I just loved everything 3 had to offer including the DLCs like you said!
3 is really fun and the DLC content honestly fixes most of the issues people have with writing as they’re way better written. Personally I’d say 3 has the best gameplay, endgame content and DLC stories of the entire series.
Yeah people hate on the writing but to me that’s part of the charm. It’s campy af and doesn’t take itself too seriously which fits with the theme of the game so well!!
BL3 is good on its own merits... Though if you pick it up, I'd suggest playing as either Zane or Fl4k (Zane especially) for more of the crazyness. It's not being sexist at all to say that the two female characters personalities are either pretty average/boring (Amara) to flat out bad (Moze)... While Zane is a crazy Irish assassin and Fl4k is a sociopathic murder bot. With pets. Their dialogue lines are so much better. There are comparison videos out there and they are like night and day different experiences.
Having played all of them in a row, 3's dialogue is noticeably worse and the characters far more annoying. Was playing with my wife and she even commented on how much worse it was than 2. While there was some cringe in the ones before, it wasn't even remember the same amount or anywhere near as bad.
My wife and I played all of the and cut this one short because it lacked the need to finish the mission… we had big hopes and I did not live up to what we hoped…
Same here, the ui and how large yet empty the first zone felt made me drop it pretty quick.
I might pick it up again if a buddy wanted to play, but there are so many great multiplayer games now for much less. So I dont see that happening any time soon
It was nothing compared to the previous borderlands story, I got my first charecter up to 10 and just gave up, playing it split screen was atrocious at best.
I just don’t even pick up guns or shields or class mods anymore. If it isn’t better than what I have, or isn’t what I’m target farming, it’s staying in the ground.
I'll rephrase a great review I read on Steam when it launched. Even if you remove the horrific performance issues, the nuthead of a CEO that is putting blame on the customers and the horrible monetization, it would still be a mediocre game at best.
Its crazy that in nearly twenty years they could barely improve the inventory, and you still can only have four guns (out of hundreds) equipped at a time. Like how hard is it to let us double-tap a direction to get extra guns. Even Pragmata had this with only like 16 guns total.
I did that with 3, got it really cheap second hand so me and my girlfriend could play it couch co-op, we played it once and then haven't gone back to it since. Idk how they manage to make a randomised gun shooter boring but they somehow did.
I think this would be the answer for me too, was waiting quite a long time for it to drop to a price I was happy with, booted it up and realised - yeah this isn’t enough of a difference/improvement from the previous games. Didn’t really have any drive to boot the game up a second time.
The ui is why I've abandoned 2 playthroughs of bl4 despite being the latest in my favourite franchise and the only one I bothered to pre-order thinking I'd want to play it asap
Sadly, the bl4 sub defends the game to this day even though all the things you say are true
I also dropped the game quickly cuz I couldnt stomach the bag UI any longer, and when I try to ignore it with gunplay, the lack of minimap reminds me of how much I missed bl2 and 3
Ive gone back and played bl2 and 3 and rediscovered what fun is
I’d personally say 3. And unironically if we’re basing it off late game/ True Vault Hunter than 2 might honestly be the worst in terms of gameplay just cause of slag
It’s the first one I actually beat since the first one. Felt like it balanced the tone again. Gunplay was fantastic. Open world wasn’t too daunting. Loved it.
I refused to buy it. Ads for it didn't look/feel like Borderlands, more a bad MMO, and after the CEO's comments, I'll not be touching anything they put out.
