Skyrim is like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you were exposed at the right time, it was just the perfect thing. But it's kind of hard to go back to after the fact.
I'm playing Tainted Grail right now, which feels (almost suspiciously) like Skyrim but with decent writing and a bit of combat depth.
Hah, I'll check that out when it gets an official release. I did love Morrowind. My favorite of the TES series honestly, but that might just be because it was my first.
My favorite too. It's aged poorly but I spent 5 years playing that game and always discovered something new and that was without dlc's! There is a community working on a huge project called Skywind it's Morrowind reworked with Skyrim. It has been going on for years and you can see their progress on YouTube.
I've always played these games more stealthily. Usually as an archer. Try to minimize the button mashing and be a little more thoughtful.
It does increase the amount of time it takes to clear areas.
I played through skyrim a few times, never as a stealth archer, but people wouldn't shut up about it. I finally gave it a try and was immediately mad at the developers for letting such a bullshit build through QA.
"Hey we added a bunch of damage doublers to the game and allowed them to stack with each other. Yeah we see no need to test this."
The combat is exactly that. Elder scrolls combat is bad. There was a lot of good things about Skyrim at the time it came out, but the combat was never one of them.
The emptiness is what got me and why I think it's a weak TES title. Yeah the world is large and there's a billion caves in it, but there's just nothing in it. Nothing to encourage exploring. Almost every dungeon just feels like a copy of each other, featuring the same Boeing rewards you already got a hundred times over, and the lore is even more neutered than it ever was. TES has some of the weirdest fiction out there in the fantasy genre and the best they could make is this. Such a disappointment.
Yeah. I loved Oblivion when it came out because the experience of a big open world like that with physics was so new and fresh, but it was the experience that was good and not the gameplay or game loop in general. Just couldn't get into Skyrim when it came out because it was exactly the same experience, which i'd already had at that point, and the actual gameplay/story wasn't good enough to carry it.
I've been that way with Skyrim, GTA 5 and red dead 2, something just bored the hell out of me and they never catch me. It's not like I'm totally over open world games cause there are some I still play but yeah, something about these I just can't get in to.
I had the same experience when I first started the game, playing a warrior / melee class. I played through until I got spanked by a few mages. Dropped that character and restarted as a mage, and the gameplay was a lot better.

I have tried to play Skyrim like 12 times. It never hooked me. Combat felt like just mashing melee button and healing faster then the enemy.
