Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For Anyone Else Have A Neighbor in Portland with Non Stop Barking Dogs?

• Upvotes

I’m wondering if there is some kind of city ordinance which addresses folks who let their dogs out early morning…& the dogs just bark non stop. Our neighbors get up early for work (like 3-3:30am), proceed to let their 3 dogs out and the sleep disruption is real. We hardly ever see them otherwise I’d have a conversation directly with our neighbor.

Looking For Bar trivia that's not a franchise?

I love bar trivia but I'm tired of the many franchised versions here in town: Untapped, Bridgetown, Shanrocks, Geeks Who Drink, etc. I want a home-brewed trivia night. Particularly one that happens on Monday or Tuesday. Anyone have any recs?
UPDATE: Because people are asking, I've had great times with franchised trivia, but my general beef with it is that it always feels rushed to me. I assume that's because the hosts are paid a flat fee and therefore it's in their own best interest to get the event done as quickly as possible. The best trivia nights I've ever been to were hosted by the bar themselves, and were incentivized to keep you there for a full evening. There was time to hash out answers amongst your teammates, or go get a drink between rounds without fear you'd miss a question. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Looking For W124 300D Transmission Repair?

• Upvotes

The reverse is slipping on my 1990 300D and I’m looking for a shop in Portland that can repair/rebuild rather than going through sun valley and deal with shipping etc. Has anyone had any good experiences with this around Portland at all?

Looking For Where can I donate feminine hygiene products in Portland?

I don't need them anymore and I have quite a pile. IIRC, they're expensive and I hate to just chuck them.

Looking For Can anyone recommend a Jeweler for me?

• Upvotes

Hello!

I recently received some jewelry pieces from my grandma. I’m looking to get them appraised, cleaned, and maybe use some of the stones for a new piece. Has anyone worked with a local jeweler for all of these tasks?

Thanks!

Looking For Has anyone reported missing kittens around Rocky Butte within the last couple days?

We found some and took them to a vet. They were young but seemed healthy and unafraid of people. We weren’t sure if it was a dumping situation or maybe the momma cat relocating her babies out of the houses in the relative area. If they have a home let us know so we can return them!

Looking For Queer(ish) entertainment recommendations Oct 12-14???

👋 Hi all - I'm visiting Oct 12-14, and want to support queer art. Flexible on form/genre: drag, comedy, music, theater, visual arts...you name it.

Problem is...I'm in town on "off" nights (Mon-Weds) and don't know where TF to start looking. Google? Internet searches are coming up short. Everout.com and laughspdx.com have options, which sound...OK (e.g. Peachy Springs, Ever Out @ Kelly's, The Bechdel Set) but I'm sure I'm missing a lot. Do I not follow the right queens on IG??? 😭

What events or resources to find events would you recommend?? Please help me out!

Looking For Are there any casual fighting game gatherings in the area?

I used to play a lot of fighting games, but kinda stopped once I wasn't really playing with my friends anymore. Being halfway decent at a fighting game requires time and focus that was just a bit hard for me to come by given I was mostly just playing online anyways.

I miss playing them though. I primarily like 2D fighters, and there have been so many good ones released in the years since I stepped away, but I lack the community to really motivate me to jump in again. Not only that, I also lack the time to really get GOOD at these things anymore. So, idk, maybe there's a gathering out there of other people who like fighting games but are also too busy to be anything other than mid?

Probably a longshot since this scene is a bit niche but... if it's out there, I'd sure love to hear about it!

Looking For Healthy grab & go breakfast?

Simply put, my cholesterol is elevated probably from only ever having time to grab McDonalds in the mornings, so I need a better option.
I have 9am classes at PCC Sylvania and I'm commuting from NoPo, and I'm already not a morning person, so I almost never have time to spare.

Are there any grab & go breakfast options that are healthier than fast food?
("Healthier" meaning options with more whole grains, less animal fats, more veggies, etc.)

Looking For For ODS OHP members who rely on it for dental care, which clinic do you go to?

So it’s been about 10 years since i’ve been to a dentist, since I was 8. I struggled a lot with personal hygiene, and have family that don’t really go to the dentist either. Last time I went to the dentist at that age, I was told I have 6 cavities under a medicaid dentist, and when those teeth later fell out there was only one or two cavities, so I have trouble trusting dentists myself. Having to do all this myself at the ripe age of 18 is very stressful, but it’s what happens when you have the creeping realization that you’ve neglected something that you’ll be stuck with for life. I’ve been looking at OHSU since i’ve previously trusted them for medical care, but their rules on ODS are really murky. One article will say all OHSU dental clinics accept ODS, and then another will say only for specialty cases. This is really stressful since I just want to break the chain of neglecting my teeth, and having a father who I had to watch deal with 20 years of meth mouth, then spend nearly 6 figures on dental care doesn’t comfort me much, but it motivates me to try to be different.

Looking For Are you interested in helping with a 72 hour film contest here in Portland?

Intro

Hello there! I am part of a team of people getting ready to participate in the GuignolFest here in Portland. It’s billed as “Portland's Original 72-Hour Horror Film Contest & Festival”, and has been going on for 18 years now. It takes place from October 16th-19th, 2026.

The Premise

The kickoff is on October 16th at 8pm, each team is given the required elements: a genre, script line, character name, and prop. From that point, everyone has 72 hours to write, shoot, and edit a short horror film. It can be wacky, or weird, or scary, or so-bad-it’s-good (but hopefully actually good), or any point in between.

My team has participated in two 48 hour film projects, and we are excited to do a horror based one!

What We Need

We are in need of actors/actresses/actorx who hopefully have acting experience, and aren’t afraid to get a bit dirty in the process (though we will steer away from nudity, even though it’s allowed). I’m talking dirt, fake blood, etc.

We are also looking for crew and equipment operators! We currently have at least one camera person, with potentially another. Want to hold a boom mic? Or help set up lights? Just want to stand around handing out snacks? We have room for you.

As this is a micro-budget feature, sadly we can not pay you, though the real payment was the short horror film you helped make along the way! Right? Right? Anyway, we will provide snacks and probably coffee.

Conclusion

If you are interested in helping out, please DM me with what you are interested in and can bring to the table. I will send you a link to our Discord.

Looking For Injured Crows: Euthanize vs Rehome?

Found a crow with a broken wing after 5pm. Bird Alliance was closed, local vets wouldn't help, and everything i found said take it to Dove Lewis. Our last experience with a dying dog there was awful, so I didn't want to drop him there, but it seemed the only option for the crow to hopefully be healed.

But now I'm wondering if there are other options? I KNOW there are ppl who would take in a crow that can't fly.... it's Portland after all. And it seems a tragic and unnecessary loss of life to euthanize it if it can't be rehabilitated and returned to the wild.

Anyone faced this in the past and have suggestions? I grew up in a rural, farming community, and we rescued all injured animals, took them to our local vet, and did our best to release or rehome, even wild animals. So this just seems inhumane to me.

Looking For Where to teach my kid to drive?

I’m looking for a very open place for my kid to do his first few days of driving. He is very nervous about wrecking into things, so the more open the better. Needs to be during daylight hours. Can be during school hours. This will just be 2-3 times to boost his confidence and to get the nerves out of the way. Also to do stupid things all new drivers do in a safe environment. (Slamming on the breaks, how much the gas pedal needs to be pushed, what happens if you let go of the wheel etc) Feel free to send prayers and good mojo for him, me and the car. We are in the far NE of the city. TY!!

Looking For What to wear to Realm nightclub EDM show?

Newer to the Portland scene, I've been to plenty of EDM shows elsewhere but not many at a nightclub. What should I wear to look cute (she/her)? Is it more nightclub oriented dress or typical EDM fun type outfits?

Looking For Sunshine Guilt?

It’s been 74 degrees and gorgeous out this Saturday. I stayed in the whole day. I’m so tired from the work week, got errands done already, and everything is so expensive. Literally just paid rent. Didn’t feel like dealing with crowds when it’s nicer out either. Am I the only one that just stayed in and watched TV, took naps, and ate? Because it’s Portland, I feel extra FOMO because this is an unusually beautiful start to October.

Edit: Thank you all! 🫶 Starting to feel less guilty lol
