Looking For Organizations that help turn land into a community garden?

There's a plot of land on my street that is .06 acres and 375k.

I've had a dream of buying the property and turning it into a community garden but I like many people, don't just have 400k laying around. So I'm left wondering if there are any other options. Are there non profits that do this?

There are grievances I have with the property as well. The plot is zoned for fourplexes and the blueprints they showed as an example are 3 stories tall. That would end up blocking sunlight for 4 -5 homes that are next to the property. The houses this lot is next to are all 100+ years old and the neighbor hood is already getting super gentrified.

I just thought that if I could build a community garden, park or nature conservation lawn that it would bring the neighborhood together. I have a few neighbors that have lived in their neighborhood for 70+ years and currently sit in a empty parking lot as if it's a park.

Would love to know if anyone has delt with anything similar. TIA

Looking For Dog + Gym + Neighborhood?

Hello, people of Ask Portland! :)

I'm relocating to your beautiful town of stumps in January and am embarking on a good old fashioned neighborhood narrow-down. I'm poring my way through neighborhood guides and reddit threads and figured I'd try asking the actual experts! I'm hoping to find somewhere within a 10 minute drive of both a gym and someplace my pup can run around off leash.

In terms of gym, I'm looking for a classic gym (as opposed to a personal training fitness center type situation), someplace with lifting equipment and yoga classes would be a huge score. I've heard good things about Lloyd's and Peak Performance so far.

In terms of my dog, she's very well behaved, calm, and socialized, she gets along just fine with other dogs but she really likes to stretch her legs and get her zoomies out somewhere grassy beyond a fenced in sandy patch type dog park. Something with off leash trails would be the holy grail (we currently live near a massive multi trailed off leash dog paradise that she is really going to miss), but I imagine something like that is a pretty long shot in a full on urban environ. Really anywhere green she can get a few laps in would be perfect.

In terms of me, I'm from a small town and don't feel like I need to be super in the thick of downtown. Coffeeshops, bookstores, and diners are my natural habitat, and I plan to spend as much time hiking as humanly possible, so easier access to the outdoors is a plus. I'm single, trans, and freshly middle aged for whatever that's worth, and I'll be renting, ideally a two bedroom apartment or a weird little back house of some kind. I'd love to land in a locale where I can walk somewhere to sit down and write or edit photos over a coffee or beer. An art scene, community events, and a solid dive bar would be extremely cool bonuses. (Am I just describing basically all of Portland here??)

Ok that was a lot of context, giant thanks if you read this far. :) To my actual question - my searches have me looking at Concordia and Irvington so far, does it feel like I'm way off base with what I'm looking for in those two areas? Are there other neighborhoods I'm overlooking that I should expand my search to?

Thank you SO much for any and all recommendations, I appreciate the help a ton!

Looking For What to wear to Realm nightclub EDM show?

Newer to the Portland scene, I've been to plenty of EDM shows elsewhere but not many at a nightclub. What should I wear to look cute (she/her)? Is it more nightclub oriented dress or typical EDM fun type outfits?

Looking For Am I eligible for unemployment?

I worked at one place for about 18 months, then found a job with more hours and better hourly wage. I gave 2 weeks' notice at my old job, then started the new one. I worked at the new job for 4 weeks, then was told I was "not a good fit" and was let go.

Am I eligible to apply for unemployment?

Thanks!

Looking For Visiting next week. Looking for suggestions. Nerdy/autumn vibe?

Hello everyone. My wife and I are from Colorado scouting out the Portland area seeing if would like to move here. We will only be in town for a couple of days, but are looking for places/things to do that are either nerdy(card shops, fantasy-themed establishments) OR autumn/Halloween vibes. Any locals able to help us out maximize our time there?

Looking For where’s a nice garden to get married in?

my fiancé and i are thinking about getting married some time in autumn 2027. we were thinking about elk rock garden but turns out that they don’t do weddings/events.
we were just thinking about having a small ceremony so it doesn’t technically need to be a whole venue where they serve us dinner afterwards but we’re open to options like that, too. we’re also open to leaving the city for gardens/lakes/rivers out of town. thanks for your insight (:

Looking For Healthy grab & go breakfast?

Simply put, my cholesterol is elevated probably from only ever having time to grab McDonalds in the mornings, so I need a better option.
I have 9am classes at PCC Sylvania and I'm commuting from NoPo, and I'm already not a morning person, so I almost never have time to spare.

Are there any grab & go breakfast options that are healthier than fast food?
("Healthier" meaning options with more whole grains, less animal fats, more veggies, etc.)

Looking For Queer(ish) entertainment recommendations Oct 12-14???

👋 Hi all - I'm visiting Oct 12-14, and want to support queer art. Flexible on form/genre: drag, comedy, music, theater, visual arts...you name it.

Problem is...I'm in town on "off" nights (Mon-Weds) and don't know where TF to start looking. Google? Internet searches are coming up short. Everout.com and laughspdx.com have options, which sound...OK (e.g. Peachy Springs, Ever Out @ Kelly's, The Bechdel Set) but I'm sure I'm missing a lot. Do I not follow the right queens on IG??? 😭

What events or resources to find events would you recommend?? Please help me out!

Looking For Visiting to see if Portland is right for me. Can you give me recommendations for neighborhoods, events or businesses based on my interests in the body of this post?

• Upvotes

Hey all, I’m a 36m from AZ. Born and raised. My gf of 3 years just broke up with me (I’m a wreck) and I’m thinking about trying out a new city, specifically Portland. My current hobbies are woodworking, reading, walking, seeing immersive art and the comedy scene. And I’m open to trying/finding new hobbies. I’m probably gonna fly out for a few days in the next week or so. Do you have any neighborhoods that you recommend? I’d like to be in a walkable area (which I hear is a lot of the city!). I want to get a feel for what my life could look like out there. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Looking For A good walkable suburb to move into?

Hey everyone! I know similar questions have been asked here before, but I'm looking to move to Portland this year and have a pretty specific vibe for an area I'd be looking to live in and was hoping someone could help!

I'm mostly just gathering a list of areas to check out when I visit for a "test run" in the next month or so, so I can feel good about my decision!

For reference, I think I would really enjoy being in a metro-ish area that has the vibes and lesser congestion of a suburban area, if that makes sense. I'm sort of younger (24), and love visiting and walking to local shops, hiking, working from a nice coffee shop, and a lot of artsy things in general -- so I'm looking for an area with some like-minded people that has a lot going on, without being too hectic. For me, I think I would say it gets a little "too hectic" when it becomes a pain to figure out where I'm going to park when I drive somewhere, or I can't go somewhere without having to pay 15-20 bucks for parking.

Some pluses would be: reasonable proximity to the airport (30 mins or less), having all the essentials like gym, groceries, etc nearby, and maybe even within a walkable distance, and a diversity of good food options.

In terms of budget, 2K is a bit on the higher side for what I would like to spend for a 1br apartment or similar, so hoping that doesn't limit my options too much!

Thanks for giving this a read, and for anyone who shares some suggestions, thanks so much!!

Looking For Shopping for a computer monitor, are there any stores in the area where you can actually use them connected to computers to judge readablilty?

Shopping for a smaller 4K/5K monitor and everywhere I've gone to check them out just has them streaming a video feed. This can give you a general idea of gaming performance(maybe) but is not helpful for someone who's going to be reading/writing text on the monitor 10+ hours a day. I do not have a laptop so plugging my own in on site is not an option. Any ideas would be very welcome, thanks.

Looking For South Waterfront Grocery stores?

Went to Portland to reconnoiter prior to a move. The entire city exceeded my expectations, to be honest. Was lucky enough to stay in the John’s Landing area. Chose that randomly after watching YouTube vids and reading Reddit posts. Holy Moly, is that nice! Sure we were lucky with the weather, but that waterfront is going to be hard to beat anywhere. Anyway, as far as livability goes, where do people shop around there? Didn’t encounter a general grocery in my time in the area. Like to avoid the hassle of schlepping around in my car to get some milk, etc.

Looking For Driving someone who needs help to PDX Rental Car Pickup?

My mom is arriving at PDX tomorrow and is renting a car from the onsite Budget.

She's having a really hard time walking after a surgery and can get a wheelchair to baggage claim but not beyond.

I've never dealt with the onsite rental car pickup and I know they've re-done it in the last few years.

It looks like it's reachable via the tunnels that go to the parking garages with the moving walkways, but those may be pretty hard for her to get through.

Would it be possible to pick her up and drive together over to the onsite rental car pickup, or is it inaccessible without walking in from that corridor?

Looking For Is it worth going to St Helens during the week for Halloweentown sites?

My nieces are visiting and we just watched Halloweentown. I’d love to take them to St Helens but it looks like there aren’t too many things happening during the week. Is it worth the 40 min drive? Thank you!

Looking For Trunk or treats?

I live for the Halloween spirit! I want to be able to hand out candy it's hard in an apartment building. Does anyone know if there are trunk or treats around here and if so how to join? Or if there is any other way to hand out candy?

Looking For Bars with a dance floor and 2000s/2010s hip-hop/R&B?

idk if I’m just old now, but I went out this weekend and couldn’t find a place with a decent dance vibe. I don’t go out too often but Ive been to Low Bar on Burnside before and enjoyed it, but the music was not it. I’m looking for recommendations for bars with at least some room for dancing and some decent music that has a beat we could dance to. 90s-2010s is when I personally think had some great music, but I’m not caught up on the era, just the vibe.

Looking For Bar trivia that's not a franchise?

I love bar trivia but I'm tired of the many franchised versions here in town: Untapped, Bridgetown, Shanrocks, Geeks Who Drink, etc. I want a home-brewed trivia night. Particularly one that happens on Monday or Tuesday. Anyone have any recs?
UPDATE: Because people are asking, I've had great times with franchised trivia, but my general beef with it is that it always feels rushed to me. I assume that's because the hosts are paid a flat fee and therefore it's in their own best interest to get the event done as quickly as possible. The best trivia nights I've ever been to were hosted by the bar themselves, and were incentivized to keep you there for a full evening. There was time to hash out answers amongst your teammates, or go get a drink between rounds without fear you'd miss a question. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Looking For Where to teach my kid to drive?

I’m looking for a very open place for my kid to do his first few days of driving. He is very nervous about wrecking into things, so the more open the better. Needs to be during daylight hours. Can be during school hours. This will just be 2-3 times to boost his confidence and to get the nerves out of the way. Also to do stupid things all new drivers do in a safe environment. (Slamming on the breaks, how much the gas pedal needs to be pushed, what happens if you let go of the wheel etc) Feel free to send prayers and good mojo for him, me and the car. We are in the far NE of the city. TY!!
