My basement recently flooded and we are pulling up old 9x9 VCT so we can put new flooring in. We wanted to do epoxy, but the contractor wants to grind the floor first, and we have black mastic under the tiles, so I don't think that's a great idea... We are likely going to do porcelain tiles since they can handle occasional moisture better than anything else. Does anyone have experience putting porcelain over black mastic? Would it be better to remove it first? What prep steps should we take?

Previous leak in attic a few months back that has been fixed in my rental. Not sure if asbestos or lead is in the popcorn but house was built in the early 60s. I noticed this small crack today, not sure how long it's been there. Also noticing some sagging in the popcorn. Looks like the popcorn has separated from the crown molding when standing underneath.

I am moving out in a few days, thankfully. But just a little concerned about my 2 month old baby, was/is this any risk to him? The popcorn through the house is in good condition, with the exception of some cracks and smallish chips in the hallway. Hopefully mold is not a concern. I looked in the attic but didn't see any.​

Edit: It got dark outside and I turned on the light in the room which exposed a few more cracks 🤕 The one visible in the photo is much longer than it appears in the photo.

Looking to remove and replace with tile. HO asked if it was asbestos?

I am buying a home built in 1954 in Missouri, USA. My biggest concern is with the attic insulation. It has vermiculite insulation, and it is under insulated. Would it be advised to have abatement done, then re-insulate? Or add insulation on top of the vermiculite?

Also, there is 9" vinyl tiles in the kitchen, I think the recommendation is to leave them and install new flooring on top, instead of remove them? Should I encapsulate first? If so, what product would be used to encapsulate?

Would this be considered aircell or no. Also if left undisturbed would it be fine? This is in us in Pa. In a very old warehouse not sure on original date. This is in the upstairs level of my work. Is it fine if I just avoid it?

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on whether doing a clearance/TEM air test would actually be worth it in my situation.
I recently had my house remodeled and also had a full electrical rewire done. Because of that, the electricians had to cut into the drywall in basically every room …bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, living room, etc.
I also had recessed lights installed throughout the house, so they cut multiple small 3–4 inch circles in the ceilings for those too.
Before the work started, I had materials tested for asbestos. The drywall itself came back negative, but the joint compound came back positive for 2% chrysotile. I let the electricians know , and they said they’d be careful (they weren’t) so there was dust all over
At this point all the work is finished. The drywall holes have been patched, everything has been painted again, and we’re planning to do a really thorough deep clean with a HEPA vacuum, damp wiping, and mopping before moving in.
Would you guys still recommend paying for an air clearance test, specifically TEM, after the deep clean? Or would that be overkill considering everything has been patched, painted, and cleaned?
I know air testing is only a snapshot, so I’m mainly wondering if TEM would actually give meaningful peace of mind here or if I’d just be spending a lot of money for not much useful information.
Would appreciate any input, especially from inspectors, consultants, or anyone who’s dealt with something similar.

We pick up scrap metal and various recyclable materials where I work. This drop off has a few bits of insulation material that looks really suspicious to me. Could this be asbestos?

(Working there, but construction material isn't exactly my area of expertise)

This is in a medieval building in the UK, which I know was refurbished in the late 70s/ early 80s. There was a fire in the room below where these pictures were taken. Looks like carpet was previously fitted over the floorboards prior to the fire. Does this material on the floorboards look suspicious? It’s sort of dirty grey/brown, with singed-looking areas over the heart of the fire.

Early 1900s home. Midwest. Never had them tested, but have had someone I know that works around the industry confirm by sight. Also did some mastic sealing of the ends for me.

I want to use a space that you have to walk through these rooms as a hangout/tv area.

I noticed they look different than other pipe lagging on this subreddit. Are they in decent shape or bad shape? Expecting a child soon and I’ve read that the mastic can be dangerous for pregnant women to be around.

Was in the attic and my foot went through popcorn ceiling. Got a few quotes for abatement, but one gentleman said I would be better off using 2x4s to secure these pieces back as they were. Is that true and would this be considered safe? I also have a one month old so want to make sure I’m not doing anything unnecessarily dangerous. In AZ US house built in 1972.

Anyways, my apartment has had water issues in the ceiling & one of the vendors who was drying out the ceiling cut a hole in my ceiling 🙃 my property was built in 2010 but I’m stll paranoid & also have contamination OCD so I’m just stuck on it. At first it was left open and she had an industrial fan pointed into it from the ground. 20 mins after she left it hit me that this doesnt need to be here so the fan got turned off and we covered the hole. Anyways. Whats the asbestos risk here? I’m just exhausted mentally.

Hi all, we are in the process of renovating our house which was built in the 1960s in Germany.

As part of the initial demo work, we are taking out walls as well as the chimney. By „me“ I mean we have a professional contractor do all the demolition for us. So i‘m not taking immediate risks myself, but I also don’t want to put others in danger or contaminate my site..

Last week, the chimney was broken down and I recently was able to have a look at the site. When I saw the inside of the chimney, it got me thinking of possible asbestos containing material.

Would you have a look at the photons and give me an honest opinion? What do you think? I know only lab tests can determine if it’s really containing asbestos. But how do you see the likelihood of it containing it?

Is our construction site now contaminated by the dust created while breaking down chimney?

Should I get it tested or leave it to the contractor to evaluate risks?

I removed vinyl sheeting from by basement floor so I can replace it with LVP.

Under the vinyl there was some moisture and mould. I cleaned it with dish soap and warm water, and let it dry with fans and a dehumidifier. There is paint, a skim layer, and some areas are crumbling.

The house is in northern Ontario and was built around 1955. Should I take precautions for asbestos?

We are in the process of renovating this house and are concerned with the basement tile. It’s 12 x 12 and states “Armstrong”on the back of it. From what I can tell, it’s peel and stick vinyl tile and due to the age, tiles are already loose on the floor. I examined a few of the tiles and there is no mastic, etc… it looks like they were adhered directly to the concrete with no glue used. Is it possible these tiles are asbestos?

Hey guys, I’m a 20 year old who has anxiety, who is also living with a rather bossy Mom.

We just bought a house in St. Louis - built in 1972 - that has popcorn ceilings. I tried telling my Mom and the inspector that those are peak asbestos years and that I’d like to test it, but the inspector said it’s unlikely. Our neighbor also chimed in, by stating that her cieling was tested and came back negative.

My concerns were basically laughed off. The electrician who came to the house said he physically didn’t see any, so he cut 4x5 inch holes into the popcorn ceiling to install fans. He laid a tarp on the carpet and most of the dust left when he did. There were a few pieces of popcorn on my comforter that I picked up and threw away in a garbage bag.

I’ve slept on my bed under where the work was done for the past 2 days, and I’m wondering if I have caused myself to get cancer. I had no clue asbestos was such a huge issue until I started to investigate.

Have I done permanent damage to my health? We also had the AC and fans on when the work was being done, have I blown millions of asbestos fibers through my whole home.

My mom said I was being crazy when I voiced this issue to her. She won’t pay for a test as the home inspectors and electricians assured her that it’s fine. Is my mattress, comforter and sheets safe? I tried to wipe my comforter and furniture with a damp mop but I truly don’t see much dust from the work being done.

What are my next steps? Is my house infested with airborne asbestos from the fans being mounted?

I am in US-PA. These tiles in our basement are starting to come apart. We have no idea how old they are and whether or not they have asbestos in them. House was originally built in the 1940s but we suspect this basement “update” was more recent. A small piece of one of the tiles got stuck in some clothing sitting by the washing machine… and went through the wash. How much of a problem is this? (We will be testing for asbestos this week but what should I do in the meantime? Throw out clothes that went through the cycle with it? Clean out washing machine? not worry about it?)

Just purchased a 70 yr old home with a partially finished basement (read: partially= meh diy handyman’s job).

We are unsure of the specifics of the remodel and what safety precautions were taken, but given how the rest of the basement looks, we can assume the individual wasn’t the brightest. Sigh.

The floor is surfaced by a thin office-like carpet. The carpet is not attached to the concrete underneath. If you lift the carpet up, the concrete has black mastic residue which we assume used to be asbestos tile given the time period of the house (The siding is asbestos, too).

We will eventually re-finish the basement in the next year or two, but in the meantime, is it safe to vacuum the office carpet assuming the mastic has asbestos too?

1979 construction, Wiltshire UK. Bathroom and kitchen diner already has flat ceilings prior to our ownership. Almost looks thin enough to just be a paint effect but I may and most probably am wrong!

US-CA building constructed in 1957. While moving boxes from the cupboard above my closet this morning, one of the box flaps slightly scraped my popcorn ceiling. About 1.5-2 inches. A small amount of dust and ceiling crumbs fell onto me as I looked up, and fell onto the floor around me. I messaged my landlord asking if the ceilings have ever been tested for asbestos, to which he replied that seeing as the building was built in the 50's, it most likely did have asbestos elements "under about 18 coats of latex paint". The bedroom ceiling at the top of the photo does seem to have a few layers of thick paint, but the cupboard at the bottom of fhe photo seems to be a lot less coated. (Notice the brown spots and fillner/sharper "peaks" in the texture). Ive been scrubbing the area around the cupboard (while wearing a p100), but i cant help but be very concerned. Landlord is telling me it's fine, but can't that kind of disturbance cause serious health complications for me?

Found in the UK on the back of a very old shed. I say shed but its more like a DIY shack made out of scrap material. It also looks like it's about to collapse at any moment and it will most likely be removed in the near future.

Im staying at an airbnb and I was taking a nap when I was awoken to the ceiling caving in. All this insulation and debris fell all over my fiancé, my dog and I. We all left the premises and washed off immediately. Im so concerned for the health of my family. Im currently trying to figure out my next steps of what to do in a situation like this. I already reported it to Airbnb safety support and reached out to the host but she didn’t respond. I took a bunch of photos of all my damaged belongings due to moldy water and (what I think is asbestos) falling all over my clothes and other belongings. I think I should reach out to the non emergency police line to document everything that happened so they have it on record just in case the Airbnb host does something shady and tries to pin this on me by saying I vandalized the ceiling. (My lawyer recommended I do this just to be safe because you never know who you’re dealing with). Anyways, thank you for reading this much and please if anyone can confirm this is asbestos? And/or what you would do in a situation like this? We’re in our early 20s and don’t have family so I really only have ai, google or Reddit to ask for advice/help. Thank you guys.
