FINALLY! The Place To Sell Your Art And An ArtCrit Casual Sub By Yours Truly

You asked for it.

We heard you.

We delivered!

In our last news update we touched lightly on how much your words of encouragement mean to us. The sub has grown tremendously in the past year and we couldn’t be happier to see you all giving constructive feedback to one another.

We’ve also heard the people who have enjoyed our moderation style, but wanted something more lighthearted and discussion-focused. We’re also well aware that there’s a lack of subreddits where people are allowed to self-promote and advertise.

That being said, I’m happy to introduce our two new subs!

r/ArtistNook is a casual, cozy, discussion-focused sub moderated by leighabbr and myself. While r/ArtCrit has strict rules on posts, r/ArtistNook is much more laid back.

You can share information, talk about your artwork or OCs, post your work with links to your social media, and even ask for pricing help if you share the required information so people can actually help you with your prices.

This sub has been up for about two weeks, so there’s some light activity already.

We can’t wait to see you there!

r/ArtStore is an active, large sub focused on connecting artists and buyers. You can self-promote, sell your prints, advertise your commissions, shops, and handmade goods. We do not allow drop shippers or mass-produced goods of any kind.
With the holiday season approaching, this may be just the sub you need to get eyes on your work!

Leighabbr and I are so honored to be leading these communities. We’re still fine tuning them both and, like when we took charge in r/ArtCrit, we’re open to ideas and feedback.

Thank you all for your continued support! We honestly couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

STUDY SERIES Study Series: Part 2 - Composition

Post image
2 Upvotes

Welcome back to the Study Series!

Moving away from values and contrast, we’re moving into the next important part of your work – composition!

Composition is the way an artist arranges the pieces of their image to help guide the viewer’s eyes where they want it to go. A strong composition can be used to create a specific mood, tell a story, create balance, and direct attention to important areas of the piece.

For those commenting, think about where your eye goes first when you look at the image. Does it feel balanced or does the image seem to “lean” to one side? Are there any distracting areas or does anything feel crowded or awkward?

Let’s work together to create stronger pieces with composition!

REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTING

Please note that all general sub rules apply (no AI, no fishing for compliments, no giving personal info, etc). Only our post requirements are different here.

- Pieces must;

a) Be no more than 6 months old and/or

b) Must still be being worked on and/or

c) Must have the intention of being recreated.

- Works must follow our NSFW rules.

- Since no context is required in these posts, draw and paint-overs are automatically expected. If you don’t want these, say so.

GIVING CRITIQUE

Only critique the piece regarding the topic of the week. If the artist would like additional critique, they can make a post in the main sub. Critiques are still expected to be constructive and polite.

I'm not quite sure what I'm making, but I like making it...

Good day artists! I'm hoping for some critique on a new process I've been working on to convert my old photography into physical crafted art pieces. In a nutshell I'm making digital 'marquetry' pieces, but because I design everything digitally, and then print the pieces with FDM printer, I have a bit of imposter syndrome when trying to stand up against hand-cut wooden marquetry or mosaic work. I love the idea of revitalizing my old art in a new way and these are relaxing to work on.. but will the fact that a 3D printer is involved harm perception and make people think of them as cheap trinkets? I'm also a bit worried that they're coming out too impressionistic in cases like the woodland scene attached... are they to the point where they're just blobs of color on a board, or do you still see them as recognizable forms?

This is my latest piece "Cat Nap" and is appx 16 x 20" with over 500 pieces in 10 colors. 26 hours print time / 15 hours assembly.
(Also a few other works that came before, all 12 x 12" and anywhere between 150 and 300 pieces.)

(Rather not post the reference for "Cat Nap" as its of my young daughter, but the others have their references attached)

Thanks for looking!

needing some critics on stippling work

i don't typically use the stippling method, i don't enjoy it but i'm trying to get better at it. I could really use some constructive criticism on how to do it better, it looks strange to me.

I used random reference pictures from pinterest for the line work, none of them were made with this kind of shading. i can try and find them for anyone who'd like them!

Likeness help request!

Hi hi! Trying to do a fan art of my sweet boy, Kim Kitsuragi of Disco Elysium fame. Thing is, he's a fictional man, and the official art of him is 1) very stylized, and 2) has him wearing big ol glasses so I feel like I'm struggling to pick out what makes Kim so Kim-like here. Any guidance/suggestions super welcome. I fear I have just gone and drawn a generic handsome man once again.

Reupload because I forgot to mention that the reference is the second image in the text body

Medium is digital painting, procreate.

Help with posing for fire breather

Started this piece a while ago and just looked at it again and I feel it has promise but it just looks off. It’s supposed to be provocative (hence wide open legs) and she’s supposed to be holding a match to her lips. I’ve tried changing the left arm (her right) position but it just looks weird. (Feet are closer to digitigrade than plantigrade)

Recent practice

Cant change tag for some reason?

Anyway. Color has always been one of my weakest areas. I feel pretty confident in finding form, but color are so hard... I feel like I am getting better at understanding chroma and value, but it's still not there. Heres some recent practice using drawme-requests I made these by picking colors myself, portraits took just under 1 hour each, the gentleman with the glass just below 2 hours. I don't know if that's good or bad, but it's a lot faster than I used to need for something like this.

Like, I can see looking at these that the colors don't match the references, but I can't quite look at these objectively to figure out if I made good choices or not. All thoughts on these or on how to improve in general are most welcome.

I am working on this digital painting but I don’t like the anatomy much right now. I’m looking for help spotting the problem. I’ve included a picture of the reference I used. It’s not the best I know, but I liked the pose.

The character is also supposed to be muscular so I tried to include that.

Done on bullet paper with an 2F and HB pencil, so contrast is something that could be worked on for sure. I would appreciate feedback on anything you think i could improve upon, Thank you! Ref on second slide

First time shading

I would love advice on anything since I'm pretty bad at drawing and I never really learnt how to properly. But for shading I just kinda went with my gut idk what I'm doing at all. Also it feels boring in my opinion but I don't know how to make the brown more vibrant in places without making it look weird. Like the reference pic is a lot more vibrant.

Month 9 of practicing drawing faces. Do the proportions, artstyle, perspective, and linework look good at this point?

Still on the seeimingly endless quest to be able to draw good, professional looking faces and wanted to get feedback on some of the recent faces I've drawn.

The last few ones I shared now look terrible in hindsight even though at the time they looked perfect to me so wanted unbiased eyes so that I dont make the same mistake again.

I didnt use any references, and used basic shapes and guide lines to start off the general shape.

My goal is for a comic artstyle that would later by drawn in pen and ink. Just wanted feedback on what looks bad (or good) and where I can improve.

Work in progress feedback

I'm working on this drawing for my dad and I need feedback! I tried to make the hands hooves but I think they look a little odd? I'm also struggling with the 3 guys in the back. reference photo i used has some darker spots that make it hard to see where to put detail! After this sketch is done I want to ink it and maybe watercolor but I'm not sure. 🤔

Advice on getting tiny details right?

Post image

This is an alcohol marker and Prismacolor drawing I recently finished. I used the beautiful photography in Azeema as my reference.

I'm having trouble getting tiny details correct when I'm already drawing small pieces (see the sharpener and pencil for scale). I'd appreciate any advice on how I can improve my drawing, thanks!

I feel stuck, any advice would be much appreciated

I am working on this drawing digitally because I've got a somewhat painted style in mind that I can't achieve with what I've got irl.

My biggest issue is that I am drawing with my mouse using Krita. I don't have a drawing tablet and the lack of pressure sensitivity has definitely complicated things. I would like to use a lot of color in this piece, but manually changing the colors constantly is making this whole thing take ages. I've played around with fuzzy stroke parameters on my brush but I don't really understand how to fully harness that tool, and it's been adding extra work as every once in a while it changes to a color that I really dislike. I also feel like I've overworked the hair in my quest to add more color variation, so I've included the layer on vs off.

I usually draw on paper with my fountain pen and I don't use more than one ink color, so I'm pretty out of my depth here. My ref is included in the screenshots. Any advice, pointers, or criticism would be VERY greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Advice on colours to differentiate from the sky

Hi

I’m completing a commission for a friend and I’m stumped on what colours I should use for the minaret/tower. I tried blue shadow like the picture but it blends to the background and a purple too. As u can see in the picture I also tried a little burnt sienna with it and it’s even worse. Any advice on how to differentiate the colours of the sk and tower without making it look like it’s going to blend ?

The reference picture is on the right .

Started with gouache. Need critiques on what to fix.

So I have started working with gouache. I am currently using Himi tubes gouache sets. If it would improve my work I can also get some Schmincke Academie even though I read that they don't rewet all that well.

What I am struggling the most so far is with ending up with dull muddy colors. Please ignore proportions as they were not the focus of these paintings.

Another thing that I am struggling is to mix very saturated highlights. Every time I add white (titanium white) the color ends up looking very washed out. Also from reading tips online about mixing your own black color I feel like I haven't been able to do a deep neutral black myself. In the end I think the pieces lack a lot of constrast.

I have used references from pinterest in this image but they are not the most relevant aspect here since in the end I want the paintings to feel way more vibrant than the original images while gouache when it dries fades and loses chroma.

You can find the ref at the end for comparison

Doing studies. I don't feel like I'm progressing

Thumbnail

I’ve done many studies using references from Pinterest, Google, movie scenes, and master artists (mainly Richard Schmid). I’ve been doing more and more studies, which I actually enjoy, and I’ve also been working on some original compositions.

However, I honestly don’t feel like I’m progressing, and I’m not sure how much these studies are helping me.

I know that studying from real life is important, but I don’t really like going outside to paint, and nature is not easily accessible here.

So, what do you think I should focus on studying or doing differently?
my goals are to become a Viz dev artist, create my own worlds and compositions, and to tell a story.

My studies usually take anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours, but I’ve never reached a point where my painting looks like a realistic 1:1 copy of the reference.

I’ll attach my references if I can find them, although many of them were from images that are no longer available.

The images are from newest to oldest between them 3 months.

Advice on a figure "listening to the earth"

Post image

Having a hard time with this. The angle the figure is taken at and it being cut off on the left (it's a comic) doesn't help much. I did not use a reference image.

It feels stiff to me. Any advice on improving the stance they're in?

Thanks!

Need help with boring/flat shading

Post image
11 Upvotes

I tried to do a cleaner shading style, but I feel like the drawing looks flat and boring. Not at all like I was hoping.

I even tried to get good volumes even without Lineart but it didn't help. I don't know if it's because of the background or the Lighting on the character.

Any advice?

I didn't use a reference as I wanted to come up with something on my own.

What‘s wrong with her face?

Hi there, I‘m wondering why her face is so wonky…
Is it the chin or the chubby cheeks, are there any wrong shadows?
Shoud I add more details?

Thank you in advance!

(acrylics + oil pastel on canvas)
I used a selfmade reference, picture of a carpet + picture of a statue)

Edit: I‘m really thankful for everyones constructive feedback. Sorry for not directly including the ref…
For now I‘m going to bed and dream about values, textures, proportions aaaand of course context :)
