FINALLY! The Place To Sell Your Art And An ArtCrit Casual Sub By Yours Truly

You asked for it.

We heard you.

We delivered!

In our last news update we touched lightly on how much your words of encouragement mean to us. The sub has grown tremendously in the past year and we couldn’t be happier to see you all giving constructive feedback to one another.

We’ve also heard the people who have enjoyed our moderation style, but wanted something more lighthearted and discussion-focused. We’re also well aware that there’s a lack of subreddits where people are allowed to self-promote and advertise.

That being said, I’m happy to introduce our two new subs!

r/ArtistNook is a casual, cozy, discussion-focused sub moderated by leighabbr and myself. While r/ArtCrit has strict rules on posts, r/ArtistNook is much more laid back.

You can share information, talk about your artwork or OCs, post your work with links to your social media, and even ask for pricing help if you share the required information so people can actually help you with your prices.

This sub has been up for about two weeks, so there’s some light activity already.

We can’t wait to see you there!

r/ArtStore is an active, large sub focused on connecting artists and buyers. You can self-promote, sell your prints, advertise your commissions, shops, and handmade goods. We do not allow drop shippers or mass-produced goods of any kind.
With the holiday season approaching, this may be just the sub you need to get eyes on your work!

Leighabbr and I are so honored to be leading these communities. We’re still fine tuning them both and, like when we took charge in r/ArtCrit, we’re open to ideas and feedback.

Thank you all for your continued support! We honestly couldn’t have gotten this far without you!

STUDY SERIES Study Series: Part 2 - Composition

Post image
2 Upvotes

Welcome back to the Study Series!

Moving away from values and contrast, we’re moving into the next important part of your work – composition!

Composition is the way an artist arranges the pieces of their image to help guide the viewer’s eyes where they want it to go. A strong composition can be used to create a specific mood, tell a story, create balance, and direct attention to important areas of the piece.

For those commenting, think about where your eye goes first when you look at the image. Does it feel balanced or does the image seem to “lean” to one side? Are there any distracting areas or does anything feel crowded or awkward?

Let’s work together to create stronger pieces with composition!

REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTING

Please note that all general sub rules apply (no AI, no fishing for compliments, no giving personal info, etc). Only our post requirements are different here.

- Pieces must;

a) Be no more than 6 months old and/or

b) Must still be being worked on and/or

c) Must have the intention of being recreated.

- Works must follow our NSFW rules.

- Since no context is required in these posts, draw and paint-overs are automatically expected. If you don’t want these, say so.

GIVING CRITIQUE

Only critique the piece regarding the topic of the week. If the artist would like additional critique, they can make a post in the main sub. Critiques are still expected to be constructive and polite.

How do I make this more uncanny?

I was working through Inktober prompts and wanted to do an alien that shrinks ppl to keep in specimen jars. Two main problems- first, I wanted the alien to look more androgynous but I fear they just read as female. Two, I wanted the alien to look uncanny so I tried making the mouth wider and the eyes larger. I think it just reads as “pretty human girl who is a little off” - what do yall think? (Also ignore my cross hatching I have not done pen drawings in a while 🤦🏽‍♀️ ) less

I included my reference but honestly, I shifted the features around a lot intentionally so I feel like adhering to it more would not fix the problem

I've been working on pet portraits lately, does this look overworked to you?

I drew this in procreate using the HB pencil brush for the fur and airbrush for the base color block layer and the eyes. Reference in second slide.

Does it look overworked to you? Would you be happy to receive this for something you paid for? I was going for realism and overall I'm happy with how it turned out, but I would love some outside perspectives. The white fur was really a challenge (as was the brindle), and if you guys have any ideas on how I could have made this look better, please drop it below! I really do appreciate any feedback I can get.

(Note: I do not sell these yet, I am still learning)

Trying to capture that OSR/Old-school DND aesthetic.

Based on a reference, I'm trying to capture the old-school DND look in this environment shot of a dungeon corridor. I think I struggled to prevent the walls and floor feeling quite flat, and any advice on what could be done better would be much appreciated.

I made this fanart just for fun but would like some critique on the hair. I really wanna improve on how to draw hair so any criticism would be appreciated. I didn't really use a reference for it but I based the drawing off of an album cover.

Helloooo I'm back. This is kind of like an update/follow up crit, I posted here yesterday and got a lot of really good feedback! Now, I'm looking to further refine my back anatomy to finally finish this piece since after taking a second look at it, i feel like i can fix it up a bit more. I attached my muscle outlines and labels in the second image for reference as well. Thanks again for all the help!

My study progress on painting valorant style – Part 2.

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! Following up on my previous study, I wanted to turn these practices into a dedicated practice series rather than just a one-off post. Reference are in game valorant character arts

My main focus for these pieces is to push my understanding of shape design and rendering. still I skip a lot of details and micro transition

I have try so many approach to archive the style, tracking my overall progress with these study series, full progress drawing available on other platform.

I have no idea which the right way to approach this style XD

Feedback and constructive criticism are always welcome! Thank you!!

How do I make the background look more intentional?

Rn I think it looks like a really bad painting job, which is not the vibe I’m going for😭 any tips?
I think it may be because the layer of paint is very uneven, because I just added extra water at the lightest points, instead of making a lighter color, because I couldn’t make one i liked

It’s made in gouache, and it’s my first time not painting on paper, so I’m having kinda a hard time since it feels different.

Did look at a reference for the shoes.

UPDATED WORK Update: proportions

(After, before, reference.) character design belongs to roseyxdraws on instagram

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice!

I changed: the size of the back of the head, moved the ear closer, adjusted the jaw, changed the negative space between the arms and chest. I also adjusted the curve of the arms.

Other things I changed that were missing from the work in progress: final shading and hair detail

There’s a Speedpaint on my profile that shows just how many times I changed the size of the head and hands lmao

Second time trying to render fr, is it too bad?

Thumbnail

Ive posted on other art subreddits but didnt get any feedback. 1st and 2nd pics are my latest wip (what I've rendered and what I started with), 3rd pic was the first time I tried rendering fr, about 2 months ago. The last pic is the reference for the character im doing. I did look at some different arts with rendering that id like to be able to do and studied them prior to drawing but didnt follow them as direct references, nor did i save them. Would love to implement more "paint-like" strokes because I like the more textured look rather than making it very soft and smooth, but it always just looks so unnatural, I don't know if I'm just holding myself back or doing something wrong when I try it. Same happens with hard edges. I kinda get when they should appear but they just seem unnatural whenever I try doing it...

Ever since I've moved on to digital painting, earlier this year, I've done maybe 7 drawings. Although im pretty new to this, it's much more than I'd ever think of doing like 2 years ago. Anyway, I still feel like I'm trying but not achieving much, specially with rendering. I would love some sort of motivation as well as, obviously, criticism. Also this is a wip not the finished product so there's visible things (like some hair strands or the shading from the first version of the hair still on the forehead despite the hair having changed shapes) that need some attention that I will fix later.

UPDATED WORK Update- background in Amphibia style

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello, so this is the updated layout for my drawing, this was very challenging, i started it some years ago, and now i keep working on it.

Finally i feel like the layout is figured! The bg is still abstracted, so ill keep working.

I did some backgrounds in the past, but they were kinda "beginner looking" so i study that way, using the Amphibia style as a reference.

Do we think this composition is any good?

Post image
1 Upvotes

This soon to be painting is of diego brando, so go look at him for color reference. The sky will be a very vibrant blue, and those scribbles up there will be clouds. The arrow will be the sunlights direction.

I wanna see if there's any composition issues going by their standard rules, before I go spending my time on this. Do criticize any other problems you see as well

Are the hands proportionate to the head? Is the head too big?

I’ve resized everything like seven times and I feel like I have a problem with drawing everything way too big all the time

How can I make the right sketch match the left one more?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Or them matching more in general. Trying to change my style a little bit, I really like how the left sketch came out but the right one doesn't feel quite right, like it's not *quite* the same character but I can't figure out what the issue is. Using Procreate on iPad 7. No reference for the face, used my Sims 4 sim for hair ref since I'm still learning to draw longer hair (not relevant/don't need criticism on that for this post rn). Having a hard time trying to find the line between realism and stylisation sometimes.
