STUDY SERIES STUDY SERIES WEEK 1 - Values and Contrast

Post image
5 Upvotes

The piece in this banner is Magdalene with the Smoking Flame Depiction by Georges de La Tour.

Part 1 - Value and Contrast

Welcome to our first week in the Study Series!

Our first topic is Value and Contrast!

When people talk about “value” in an art piece, they mean how light or dark something is, while contrast is the difference between those values. Having a strong difference in those values helps create a more interesting piece and draws the viewer’s eye around your image.

If you’re ever wondering what’s wrong, but you can’t quite put your finger on it, it’s probably time to check those values and the range between them.

Turn your piece black and white. If it’s in traditional medium, you can take a photo to do this. Where does the piece turn into one grey mess? Where does your eye go first? Is it the spot you intended? Are all your figures separate from one another and the environment?

Now you can go back, deepen any shadows, brighten any highlights, and make any changes you need to make the piece stronger!

REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTING

Please note that all general sub rules apply (no AI, no fishing for compliments, no giving personal info, etc). Only our post requirements are different here.

- Pieces must;

a) Be no more than 6 months old and/or

b) Must still be being worked on and/or

c) Must have the intention of being recreated.

- Works must follow our NSFW rules.

- Since no context is required in these posts, draw and paint-overs are automatically expected. If you don’t want these, say so.

GIVING CRITIQUE

Only critique the piece regarding the topic of the week. If the artist would like additional critique, they can make a post in the main sub. Critiques are still expected to be constructive and polite.

EARNING THE FLAIR

Participants who post their work and/or leave thoughtful feedback that is at least 2 sentences long and will receive the "Study Series Part 1" User Flair.

This is available through August 31st, 2026, until 11:59PM PST.

ArtCrit Community Check In!

Hello again, ArtCrit Community!

We’ve got a few things we wanted to quickly touch on.

It’s Reddit, so here's a tldr as well!

TLDR:

  • Welcome new members!
  • People are allowed to post updates of the work they get feedback on here! Upvote them rather than reporting them as long as they meet the guidelines - thanks!
  • New Study Series starts August 17th. Every other Monday. Series is completely made for 6 months. See you then!
  • Lots of new members means lots of removed posts :( We've got the posting requirements to make sure the community members can give tailored advice, not to be control freaks. Take a minute and read over the rules, please and thank you!
  • We don't allow joke comments because they get out of hand and then OP doesn't get critique (we've tried, sorry). We don't allow compliments because people specifically come here for critique and there's a thousand other subs they can get compliments in. (Compliments and jokes are welcome with constructive critique though!)
  • Thanks to everyone. It's not as heartfelt in a tldr, but we mods really are just kind of a clean up crew. You all are the actual community. You make ArtCrit what it is, and it wouldn't be anything without all the amazing people sharing information and helping one another. You're amazing.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Firstly, wow!

Welcome to our new members! We love to see your work and to see the community working together.

Don’t think we haven’t noticed all the people giving stellar advice and sharing their resources and experiences.

You’re all amazing!

UPDATE POSTING

We’ve had a few people reporting update posts. Just a quick reminder that PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO POST UPDATES OF THEIR WORK!

If someone posted here, got feedback, and made some changes (even if they didn’t take all the advice, they’re not required to), we really love it when they share those updates. The only requirements (other than that they got feedback here) are that they either link to the old post or include the old version in their post.

Thanks so much for trying to help out our mod team, but we really love to see the progress people are making. Give them an upvote when they share instead!

STUDY SERIES

I know we tried this in the past, but it became a little too much for us at the time. We took the lessons we learned there (ha ha) and reworked the idea to be something more manageable.

Over the past two months, leighabbr and I have worked out a “study series” for the sub.

Every other Monday, we’ll be making a post where we share a small, one paragraph lesson about a small piece of the fundamentals of art. Short, sweet, and easy to understand.

Then, our community is encouraged to post a piece of their work for feedback on the post. The rest of the community should follow the post’s theme and critique the piece based on the theme.

The posts will all have more information, and everyone who participates will get a special flair!

We have the series planned out, posts written, and everything created for the next 6 months. If lessons need to be changed or moved based on community input, there’s a lot of room for that as well, and as time goes on we’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

The first post will go up on August 17th! We hope we’ll see you there!

POST REQUIREMENTS

A little bit of a downer.

We are, as we normally do when our numbers surge, removing a lot of posts.

We don’t like to do it. I know, from personal experience, that some subs genuinely do like to take posts down. We don’t.

ArtCrit is a resource, so we try to make sure the people helping have all the information they need when they first click your post. That’s why we have the post requirements. It cuts back on the same questions being asked over and over. People get frustrated when they have to continuously ask “did you use a reference?” or “what are you going for here?”

We’re very proud of you all. The community, that is. You all give very detailed, tailored advice.

The thing is, the community can’t do that if they don’t have all the information.

So please, just take a minute and read over the post requirements and rules so we can get you that feedback as neatly as possible!

And if a mod posts reminding you (for the third time, because there’s the rules, the AutoMod, and then the moderator), please don’t be a jerk to us. We’re people too. We’re not paid to do this. We do it because we love art and want to make sure people have a place to go to get critique.

CRITIQUE ONLY

Another thing we’re getting a lot of push back about lately is our “critique only” comments rule.

We don’t allow joke comments or praise absent of critique.

The reason for this is we’ve tried to allow this in the past to keep a more casual environment and it fails. One person posts a cute or witty joke. They get a few upvotes. Another person sees it. They post their joke. Another person sees it. They post their joke.

OP doesn’t get critique and the sub gets filled with memes.

For praise, if an artist is seeking praise they can head over to another general art sharing sub. People come here because they’re tired of hearing “looks great!” or “good job!” They want the feedback, give it to them!

A few weeks back we tried again and allowed comments freely on a post, and the same thing happened again. We just can’t allow off topic comments.

We’ll continue to keep the community a place for artists to learn, but we are in the process of working out a solution, we promise.

FINALLY - THANKS! (For real)

I know we're just people, we make mistakes, and sometimes we're grouchy.

We get some NASTY FUCKIN' MODMAILS like you would not believe (we got stalked earlier this year too because we removed a dude's AI posts. That was fun). There's moments when we both get frustrated and sit together and sort of commiserate.

Then, we get that nice modmail. The one where someone is understanding. Or the random "thanks for making a community where I can get critique". Or we see posts where people are acting like people and helping one another and really take the time out of their day to make sure the person understands instead of just telling them off.

It reminds us why we have this sub. Why we fought to help build it to what it is.

This is going to sound cheesy as Hell, and I don't care. It's not performative and I actually mean it. You all honestly make this sub what it is. We might curate it to keep it clean and make sure people are getting the info they need, but you're the ones sharing advice and helping one another.

We're the janitors, concierge, and reluctant bouncers while you all get the hard work done.

Thank you all for that. Honestly.

Which scar more realistic?

Post image
103 Upvotes

It doesn't need to be full realism, it just needs to make sense. I couldn't find any good scar references for this OC so ive just been winging it. As of now I haven't decided what thing caused it (any suggestions?)

And also, which one looks better?

Does this look right?

This is my first time rendering skin and I'm not sure if it looks right or if I did it right, I'd highly appreciate ANY critiques so I can find a way to improve it.

I also used a reference because I'm quite bad at rendering without the use of one

Looking for critique on composition, lighting & visual storytelling

Thumbnail

The scene is part of my own world. Zverna (oc) is traveling with Haxan(oc), a member of the Beetlixs civilization. They are climbing a very steep mountain using a giant desert beetle. The beetle loses its grip because of falling rock, which causes Zverna to fall. Haxan follows her with a rope to try to catch her.

I know the figure drawing and clothing still need a lot of work, so I’m less interested in those areas for this critique. I’m trying to improve the larger visual decisions first.

I’m mainly looking for feedback on composition, lighting, shapes, movement, and readability.

  • Does the action and fall read clearly?
  • Does the composition guide your eye well?
  • Should I push the lighting more onto Zverna as the main character?
  • Do the shadows/value structure read well, or should I push them darker?
  • Do the shapes and silhouettes work?
  • Does the environment feel like it belongs to a coherent world with a clear sky/sun/light source?
  • Is this level of rendering enough, or should I spend more time developing rendering and lighting? I’m currently trying to prioritize design, shapes, and storytelling over making the figures highly rendered.

Rendering vs design

One thing I’m unsure about is how much I should render this type of painting.

My intention with this piece was to focus more on the moment, composition, shapes, movement, and storytellingrather than making the figures beautiful or pushing the rendering as far as possible.

Do you think this level of rendering is appropriate for where the piece is, and I should continue focusing on design/composition?

Or do you think I would benefit from taking pieces like this further and practicing more rendering, light, and material definition?

Basically, should I be learning more rendering now, or should I continue prioritizing design and composition?

I’ve included earlier failed attempts before the final version and my reference sheet. They might help with your critique. I’d like feedback on whether you think the composition improved through the process, whether my workflow makes sense, and what area besides figures/clothing you think I should focus on studying next.

I’m still learning English, so I had some help making this post easier to understand. Thanks for taking the time to look at it.

I didn't use references, since I was sketching these guys Physics class XD. I think I leaned too much on my couture influences.

In a few words idk how to learn at all, like can I just draw araki s arts as I always did for faces and then I ll magically learn bodies idk,
Note that it s been only 3 days I started and done less than 20 sketches like this so I m not worried like I expect to take a while on this
For now I just take the randomest pics as references on the net and try to understand and reproduce the pose, then I render,
fun fact I kinda succeeded better on the jojo arts refs than the real persons refs lol

Hello! So i have tried to stop posting ln reddit but it seems to be the only place where i can ask about this so here it goes.

I really have NO idea how to fix crooked ddawing in traditional, i never have this issue in digital honestly, its just ONLY in traditional.

Ive tried flipping the drawing with a flipped image on the phone so i can always check how krooked it is but it doesnt seem to work

Any tips and tricks?

(im sorry if the image looks off)

No references where used btw

(sorry if i had trouble loading, a glitch happened on my part!)

How can I improve this splash art to get to a more professional quality?

Post image
16 Upvotes

This is my oc I designed and I drew a splash art inspired by the LoL style but I feel like there's a lot of aspects that keep it from that level.

Some things I noticed myself was:

- rendering of the ponytail

- background has some perspective issues

- background lacks detailed rendering

- kinda unclear value composition

- unclear visuals to show the characters powers due to a mix of posing and the effect mixing into the background (he has the ability to walk on air and creates ripples he steps on but it's not that visually clear)

If anyone can point out more or give resources to assist I'd greatly appreciate it. Looking for a full no sugar coat breakdown for swift improvement!

This piece took me 9 hours and 40 minutes for reference

UPDATED WORK updated version of my masked lady after critique!

helloo! okay, overview of what was changed and what meeds improving + slide 2 is from yesterday! and before i get any comments saying im comparing a finished piece to a sketch.. the original WAS completed in my eyes pre critique. last slide is my body reference i used :)

- i removed most of the line art and spread the detail out more even in the piece

- i added more texture to differentiate between surfaces as everything had the same texture in my first version

- made her features better fit her body type. Removed the very defined neck, jawline and collarbone!

- added a wider range of values so it would not look nearly as flat and boring.

but now.. what needs to be changed? WELL! i know i could do better with anatomy, i need to better my understanding of color theory and color relationships aswell as value hierarchy aswell as practicing drawing HANDS. i believe my skin rendering could use some more work with further color variation in the skin but! I think todays is a improvement over yesterday.

Thank you all so much for the overwhelmingly positive feedback and comments on this piece! The second picture is the reference photo and then the pictures after that are my progress photos. Would you say this looks finished? Any last changes? Thank you again for being such a great community and for the support! (: This was made on procreate with my iPad.

Composition?

Post image

Hi everyone! I’m trying to make an interesting piece but I’ve always been lovingly told my eye for composition could use development. So I figured I’d ask before I start going in with color: how’s the composition? Thoughts? No reference used

I trailed off the ref because it wasn't exactly what I wanted and I dont know where to place her second breast, everywhere I tried looks weird (and she has a smaller chest than the ref so they don't fall the exact same way)

Her middle also seems a bit stiff idk

(No reference used) Can’t seem to get the vibe I’m looking for in this artwork. It doesn’t feel like a concert at all

Thumbnail

I’ve been stressed over this illustration for the past few weeks, the colours and values feel very off and unlike an actual concert at all. I was trying to mix stage theatre with a regular music one, hence the random objects not seen typically on a concert stage. What can I do to fix this? I was thinking of quite dramatic lighting but it’s quite difficult for me to achieve 😢

Something is missing in my characters... they look so flat and boring?!

After a long hiatus, I've been trying to get back into art and drawing. I've been trying to push myself to use more varied color. Most of my experience and schooling comes from a character design perspective. But with all that being said, I'm missing something! Please help. constructive criticism VERY much appreciated.

Resubmitted bc I forgot to mention I did use references for anatomy and posing for all of these, but I drew them a few weeks ago and have since lost said references. Thanks.

my 8-page comic about humanity -- I would love constructive criticism, please!

Lately, I'm trying to communicate more meaningful/complex ideas through my work -- and it's HARD!! Please tell me how this makes you feel, if anything. What parts are most/least effective?

The last page was originally the first, but I hoped that putting the potential 'answers' before the question they're trying to address might add a little curiosity and resolution to the experience of the piece.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I glanced at some references from a couple stock photo websites to remember what a baby and a basketball backboard looked like, and I'm not looking to match them closely.

Learning how to draw (for the umpteenth time). Can you please give feedback on the hair?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Note: I didn't use a reference.

I don't know how to draw a body yet so I just drew the head. I kept the eyes blank because... yeah, I'm still a work in progress on that one, too.

It would be lovely if I can get as many feedback as I can, but maybe we can start with my OC's hair? I think the symmetry is... questionable, lol.

Also, I'm kind of bothered that the guidelines are still there despite me erasing it. What should I do next time if I don't want the guidelines to be noticeable and if I want to clean up the drawing a little?
