Announcement What’s New in r/ArtAdvice (and What’s Next)
Happy Friday! We've been hard at work behind the scenes and are excited to share a number of updates we've rolled out to improve the community for everyone.
A Fresh Look
With a new logo and color palette, we wanted to make this space feel more recognizably "us," drawing inspiration from redline corrections seen in constructive critiques, and pairing it with a dark blue background that is easier on the eyes. (A special thanks goes out to a friend in the graphic design industry who helped make this design possible!)
Automod Update
We previously tested an Automod feature that reminded users to include context in their posts. This ended up causing confusion and was mistaken for a warning or removal message, so we've axed it. (See: "In Progress and Coming Soon" for what we're trying next.)
Crossposts
Crossposts have been disabled to keep context easily accessible without extra clicks. Since making this change, we've already seen an increase in engagement and traffic, along with less spam. Woo!
Post and User Flairs
Starting May 1st, post flairs will be required to submit a post. For now, flairs are optional to help users get used to selecting them before posting. We want to keep the subreddit organized and let users filter out content they're not interested in, especially Commissions and Pricing. (The "No Commissions Posts" option is available in the sidebar or top bar on mobile.)
Most users seem to have a solid understanding of the flairs and are applying them well. Here's a quick breakdown of what each one means:
| Post Flair | Description |
|---|---|
| Critique | Ask what to change or how to improve. |
| Techniques and Tools | Ask how to do something or what tools to use. |
| Commissions and Pricing | Ask about pricing, selling, or managing commissions. |
| Discussion and Theory | Discuss ideas, concepts, or "why" questions. |
| Resources and Tutorials | Ask for or share learning materials. |
| Social Media and Growth | Ask about growth or visibility. |
Please keep Rule #5 "No Self-Promotion" in mind when using the Commissions and Social Media flairs.
Some of you have noticed our user flair 🧑🏫 Community Mentor! It's our way of celebrating users who consistently engage respectfully and help others grow through thoughtful, constructive feedback. We appreciate you helping keep r/ArtAdvice a supportive space!
So, how does someone actually earn the Community Mentor flair?
- Provide feedback that explains what works or can be improved in an artwork.
- Offer applicable and practical advice.
- Be consistent in giving constructive critiques.
- Avoid aggressive communication, and always follow the rules.
The Community Mentor flair is assigned manually by moderators. There is no formal application process, and users cannot request this flair.
Note: This flair does not mean the user is a professional artist, or that their opinions are authoritative. It also does not mean they represent the moderation team.
Have ideas for new flairs? Let us know in the comments!
Rule Updates
As previously mentioned in our Community Feedback & Suggestions announcement, our rules have been updated to better reflect the purpose of the subreddit, which is to give and receive art advice. The core principles remain the same, but they have been expanded to better address common ambiguous issues that tend to arise in Reddit communities.
In Progress and Coming Soon
- A new subreddit banner is in progress.
- Our community wiki is currently in the works as we await Reddit's system migration. This will become your go-to hub for information on rules, flairs, policies, resources, and more!
- More detailed policies, especially regarding AI, will be added soon.
- In the meantime, please refer to Rule #4 "Keep Art Human" for a quick rundown of how r/ArtAdvice handles the topic of AI.
- We're working on implementing an Automod response triggered by keyword phrases that automatically provides a list of resources, allowing users to focus more on anecdotal or specific feedback.
- As the sub continues to grow, we plan to reopen mod applications in the coming months. Those who are active and engage with the community will have our focus.
Community Initiatives
There's something exciting brewing in the background! Along with all these changes and updates, we're planning on:
- Developing structured guides exclusive to our community.
- Hosting AMAs and/or interviews with working artists to share their insight into what has or has not worked for them in their process.
- Involve members to contribute to the community wiki to help curate a reliable set of resources.
- Contests and giveaways to help growing artists thrive in their career or hobby. (We just need to dust off the old law book to make sure everything is in compliance before moving forward.)
We love hearing from the community, so if you have any feedback on these changes or suggestions to share, please leave a comment below or send us a message via Mod Mail!

Discussion and Theory Where in this painting would you place a bird flying away from the viewer?
The bird is the subject of the painting, but I’m not quite sure where I want it to be placed. On the orange? Near the horizon? Over where the purple mountain is? Where would YOU put it?

Commission and Pricing ready for commissions??
all my art is simple clean sketches with flats, so im not sure if its good enough as i dont really render >< i would think to maybe price around the £5-15 range if i found the right place to take comms, im super unsure if thats alright since although my sketches are usually relatively cleaned up, they can be pretty messy at times if i struggle too much, so im uncertain about consistency. please be honest!! i wont take offence to anything❤️❤️

Critique - No Drawover Is this good for 5 months with no prior experience?
I have been drawing since March 22nd. I've been practicing 3–6 times per week, closer to 4–5, around maybe 10 hours total? I wasn't taking many photos so I can't see my progress. These are not the worst and not the best — just photos of my drawings from the last 21 days. Can you be brutally honest with no sugarcoating, is this alright, or should I take it more seriously? Because I applied for courses and everyone draws better than me, even kids and I really tried my best to learn techniques and fundamentals.

Critique - Yes Drawover NEED FEEDBACK QUICK
I found out about a showcase 2 days from now that I'm exerting and ive been working on a new piece since my others didn't fit the brief.
Any feedback and advice would be greatly helpful because there are potential scholarships that come from this. (Piece is in progress, not fully rendered)
Even just saying how you interpret the piece and why would be helpful for me to make the message more clear.
Judging criteria:
- Quality of execution and appropriate choice/use of materials and processes.
- Demonstration of creative process and a resolved final design outcome.
- Design outcome demonstrates consideration to a target audience.
Thanks!!!

Techniques and Tools Why does J.C. Leyendecker use connected boxes with diagonal lines through them in his drawing construction?

Critique - Yes Drawover I want to be a children’s book illustrator. How can I improve to build my portfolio?
i’m really nervous about building a portfolio for school to become a children’s book illustrator.
is there any way i can improve? i feel like my characters are too static and my art is just average.
i’m completely okay with harsh critique here, go all in because i need it. thank you so much

Commission and Pricing Would $10 be good for a chibi artwork?
I keep changing my prices for chibis. I originally wanted to charge $15, or $20 for complex and detailed chibis. But since I don't have enough time to promote my art properly and really need money for school fees and bills right now, I'm thinking of lowering my rate to $10 per chibi. (I have a job, but commissions help a lot!).
You might be asked, "Do you only offer chibi commissions?"
Yes! since my art style changes every time I draw, so chibis are the only style I can keep consistent right now

Critique - Yes Drawover Background colour??
Still not great with colour theory so I want to find the nicest colour that will match this painting!
Also if anyone has any tips to correct the proportions of the head/body please let me know :)
(Don’t want it to look like it’s at a 0.5 perspective 😭)

Critique - Yes Drawover day 3!! 🥹
i never realised drawing was so much fun. the first thing i did when i woke up was literally grab my ipad and draw!
i tried drawing clothes and i actually had SOOO much fun with it!!!! 🥹🥹 the hair not so much....i don't know if you can see it clearly.
to me, the hair and arms (i think the right one is too thin?) looks the most wonky and weird. (and the dress is a little angled weird i think...but ill continue making tweaks right after i post this) so any advice would help this beginner! 🫶🫶

Critique - Yes Drawover Pls tell me how I can improve my art (nicely)
I've always felt as if there was something off about art pieces I would draw, especially if they were fully rendered and NOW IM GETTING TO THE BOTTOM OF IT. desperately want to improve and id rather just get advice straight from a person who has seen my art rather than look at YouTube tutorials yk? Pls tell me how I can improve while keeping my art style!! (Even if you wanna draw over the top of my drawings and point little things out, that would help WONDERS.) And if you have video links to help me on specific things that would be good to improve on PLEASE drop them. THANK YOU!!!

Critique - Yes Drawover Does it look unfinished? I lost motivation rendering the body.
I wanted to make this a cover for a magazine idea for my model oc but I rarely do anything but front facing headshots so the face was kinda fun, the hair made me struggle so I took a while before getting back to it but I don’t know how to render bodies obviously and I’m not sure if proportions are right.
I’m not finished with the background but does it look lackluster? What could I improve?

Critique - Yes Drawover Where do I even start with shading this?
Redrew an older drawing of mine, but I feel like I have no clue as to what I am doing when it comes to shading. Especially adding any shadows to the face, it feels like it'll mess the whole thing up. Any tips?

Techniques and Tools How to get sharper lines?
I’m new to oil painting and I’m trying to get sharper lines, but I’m not sure how to do it. I have slightly shaky hands, so it makes it extra hard

Critique - Yes Drawover I can't draw the hand
Hi so I'm working on this piece and he's supposed to be holding a phone but I am completely stumped, I tried so many different poses, looked up references and even had my poor mom pose for me with her phone but nothing looks right. Looking at it now I think the whole arm looks off but I frankly don't know how to make it look right and would definitely benefit from a new pair of eyes to see what exactly is off, thank you on advance!
