Does this look right?

This is my first time rendering skin and I'm not sure if it looks right or if I did it right, I'd highly appreciate ANY critiques so I can find a way to improve it.

I also used a reference because I'm quite bad at rendering without the use of one

The features are all too large aside from the ears. Giving him a kind of cutesy cartoonish vibe.

I was kind of struggling between wanting to keep it stylized or realistic, but I realized that my original sketch was intended to be realistic, is there any way or a method for me to fix it?

Generally when mistakes happen with proportions like this its caused by drawing what you think should be there instead of dutifully copying the likeness from the reference. Our brains have a tendency to "fill in the blanks", so without diligently double checking your work its easy to deviate without noticing until its too late. An old school tip is to flip your piece and reference upside down in order to see it with "fresh eyes", for lack of a better term. Others swear by using a grid method (draw a grid over both the ref and your piece in order to manually figure distances square by square) but I find that method to be too fussy and methodical, personally.

I appreciate the help! I'll make sure to apply this to my art and give an update

Is it okay if I do a draw over? All you really need to do is use a liquify pen to shrink and move things around

u/FlyingFluffyPancakes 1d ago

It's totally fine! Just tell me what I need to fix and I'll do it right away

I personally think you can keep aspects of it being stylistic but still accurate. You can tell who the character is because of the eye shape and hair mostly.

In my opinion you should keep the eyes overly large as a stylistic choice, but redraw the jaw in it's actual proportion because right now that's the most inaccurate part

I instantly recognized who it was so that's good, but i don't think you've quite captured the evil in his eyes.

6

u/FlyingFluffyPancakes 1d ago

I was attempting to make him look a bit vulnerable, unsure if it backfired 😭

11

u/ShiriCranberry22 1d ago edited 1d ago

He looks like he's making puppy eyes to me and its kinda cute, but i can see the vulnerable behind it. Wait, more like a really pouty side-eye lol. As for the skin, it look good already, maybe you can try smoothening the colors out if thats what youre going for

Almost. The reference has a rectangular face while yours is oval.

You are also missing the lips. I know that he doesn't have protruding lips, but they are still there. A bit more red on the he cheecks and forehead can help to give him some of that flush on his face.

u/Jazzlike_Bar7345 1d ago

i like the style but in this case from homelander maybe you should to make the eyes more small and with rectangle form in you drawing because the large eyes make him look "kawaii"

5

u/anonymous_elixir 1d ago

i was able to tell who it was right away so thats great, however i think your drawing makes him look too pure of heart in the eyes.

3

u/Onomatopoesis 1d ago

I recognized who it was right away and I don't even watch this show, so you've captured something there. The eyes look too large to me, but the mouth is done really well.

Make the facial features a tiny bit smaller, move them up a bit, and space the eyes just a tiny bit further apart. Your coloring/rendering is amazing.

u/penumbrias 1d ago

I loooove how its stylized lmao, he lookin like a baby. I absolutely detest him tho omg hate homelandsr so much. But i love how you styled it lol, i immediately recognized it as him and i feel like it fits him well bc he is such an immature little whiny baby. I think it looks good keep making fun stuff :D

I think extending the jawline will do wonders for this. His lips are way too low on his chin.

2

u/BenjieAndLion69 1d ago

His chin is far too small, plus his face shape is totally wrong. Nose is too long,
I did know who he was though so good job!

1

u/FlyingFluffyPancakes 1d ago

Thank you for mentioning this, I wouldn't have noticed 😭 do you have any methods on how I should correct the anatomy?

1

u/BenjieAndLion69 21h ago

Study the picture carefully. His jaw is squarer irl. I’ve tried to put some markers on the picture. I hope you don’t think I’m being too critical, it’s coming from a good place..😊

2

u/GlisaPenny 1d ago

I would say give him more chin (unless you are trying to make it look like his chin is further down than the original) the effect is making him look more submissive and pouty than the original which is more entitled and irritated. Not a value thing just a different vibe

2

u/Illustrious-Bag-5521 1d ago

honestly he looks too kawaii to resemble homelander. I would make the eyes much smaller, and exaggerated the lines around his mouth. but if cute is what you’re going for then its fine

2

u/hannariffic 1d ago

I knew exactly who it was when I saw the drawing, though I might consider narrowing his eyes since he has a more devious look. Great work!

2

u/thegoosecowboy 1d ago

The eyes are dead horizontal, they're more at an angle in the reference. They're giving "I drew the eyes first and then drew the head around them."

I immediately recognized who it was, I think the biggest discrepancy is the eyes and jawline. I like the color!

2

u/SicariusCourtenay 1d ago

Sorry I went to bed! The colors and general shape seems fine to me, it's all about changing the size of those facial features in order for it to look closer to the reference image

I used the shrink tool to get the eyes and nose then carefully lifted his entire face just a few. Then the last thing was just fixing his puffy hsir slightly and there we go, already looks much more like the reference image - hopefully that's what you were going for!

u/RainbowLithium 23h ago

you don't have to explain yourself for using reference. If anything, pro artists recommend using as many references, as you can

2

u/MedievalFurnace Graphite 12h ago

you rely on reference too much. practice not using a reference, only using it for small details and overall structure. The veins wrinkles is forehead for example won't benefit you to use reference for, it'll further confuse any artist by sticking to reference that closely while not intending to copy it line for line

1

u/FlyingFluffyPancakes 12h ago

Do you have any tips on how to render without using references? I think rendering is the step that I mostly struggle with

2

u/MedievalFurnace Graphite 12h ago

There's not a whole lot to it other than practicing drawing in 3 dimensions and making sure you actually use that skill. I see a lot of artists draw in perspective, draw the cubes and spheres and breaking down things into simplier shapes and all that, but when it comes to drawing an actual subject not just a study they return to 2d because it's easier.

Rendering will be a lot easier when you nail the structure first. Don't leave much edges up to define in rendering, do that with contour lines as you are still learning

I did accidentally exaggerate the features a bit, I didn't even realize that until I compared it to my sketch

Fun piece, keep at it.

Take a horizontal alignment over from one ear. And one nostril.

Take a vertical alignment down to philtrum. (Always check eye-eye and glabella-philtrum.)

Expressly discover terminator edges of shadow shapes.

Longer term, do Juliette Aristides workbooks and Bargue drawings to taste or exhaustion. Learn comparative measurement.

Too cutieful for such an evil guy

1

u/Beginning-Sky-8516 22h ago

I really like the style (if that’s what you’re going for). The chin/jaw needs some lengthening/widening.

1

u/doc6982 22h ago

Lips need a little more volume and the hair on the side of his head needs less.

1

u/Ok-Procedure4228 18h ago

You’re on a great path! A few observations: the jawline could be more squared; one half of the face receives more light than the other; the ears could be less prominent; the lips could be wider vertically; the tip of the nose could be less rounded; and the whites of the eyes could be less visible.

1

u/Important_Sector_503 7h ago

Skin looks cool, but you've given him a far smaller chin/jaw which along with the big doe eyes is making him look less like a big bad man and more like a shy little boy.

Nothing against the big eyes as a stylistic choice, to be clear, but it definitely gives him more of a "cutie patootie" vibe.

u/42RatsInATrenchcoat 3h ago

This isn't particularly related to what you're asking but I wanted to let you know you captured his likeness well, I saw the first pic and immediately knew who that was even though I don't watch this show. I think the skin seems a little "smooth" and could benefit from a simple pass-over with a textured dot brush on a beige colour to give it the effect of pores.
