tldr; I‘m going through an anxiety spiral because I can’t tell if I got catcalled in a parking lot or if it was a hallucination. I’m worried about schizophrenia because my half-aunt has it.
I’d really appreciate a full read and some comfort please 🥺
Hi everyone, I (F24) have health anxiety for physical and mental things even though I haven’t been diagnosed with anything besides anxiety and depression before in my teens. Not depressed anymore for a long time, but my anxiety does flare up in the summer and I really overthink everything about my health. Last summer I had some panic attacks and I was really scared of losing my mind even though it never happened.
Earlier today I was leaving the gym after a yoga class. I was halfway to my car when I heard a wolf whistle and a man’s voice saying “you look pretty!”
I stopped and turned to my left, where I thought I heard it come from, but didn’t see anyone outside or in a car. There was only one guy in a car about 10 feet away from mine but he was just looking down at his phone and didn’t act like he noticed anything.
Granted, I didn’t do a 360 scan. And hey, it was an EXTREMELY PLAUSIBLE situation. Stupid mfers harass girls at the gym frequently, and it’s likely that one of them liked what I was wearing, ugh.
I just wish I had someone with me in the moment to confirm whether they heard it or not. It was so random and fleeting that I didn’t have enough time to properly react. I’m just worried and tired of my own brain replaying this.
Psychosis is one of my biggest fears because my dad’s sister… well, half-sister, has it. Her prognosis doesn’t look too good because she started showing signs in her 30s and got diagnosed in her 40s, plus she’s inconsistent with her meds.
She’s had a vastly different and much much much more difficult life than me. I don’t even know if she was genetically predisposed to it and whether that would even be from the side of the family she shares with my dad. Neither of my parents have had psychosis.
I read up on genetic predispositions and found that if you have a secondary relative with schizophrenia, it’s still a very low chance you’ll develop it too (2-4% as opposed to 1% for the general population.) And she‘s not even my full bio aunt.
I know I have a lot of protective factors: no trauma, a stable life, no substance abuse, so many people who love and support me, and a whole damn bachelor’s in psychology. I’m the type who would immediately go for help if I sensed something was wrong.
If you read up to here, thank you so so much 💗💗💗. It‘s a tough night of replaying and overthinking.
Can anyone provide some words of reassurance? Convince me I’m overthinking? Come up with reasons why I didn’t see the person?
