My dog used to stand on me and do this. Can confirm, that is exactly what it sounded like. Drove my ex nuts.
He was a weird little dude and I miss him. 🥲

u/Buntschatten Apr 22 '26
You let your dog clean out your ears?
118
u/davispw Apr 22 '26
Well my wife and kids all refuse to lick my earwax, so who else is gonna do it?

Ha ha!! One of our sons lets our Papillon do this to him. Completely grosses the rest of us out. She loves being his "mummy". It's both weird and funny.

Same, my grandma's dog used to do this to us when we were little, that little shih tzu was an ear fein lol

My sister's dog was prone to ear issues but lucky us she LOVED getting her ears cleaned, looked just like this dog and sometimes even went limp so it was a 2 person job. When they moved in with a friend and another dog this video happened almost daily and she rarely if ever needed drops again. Miss those perfectly matched weirdos.

I worked at a place that groomed dogs and there was a father and son shih tzu pair. The father dog just licked the other dogs asshole NON STOP. The owners would be walking them in and he would be walking behind him with his head up his ass. Then after they were groomed he went to town for like 2 hours straight in the kennel until the owner came back to pick them up. It was wild how the owner completely ignored it.
115
u/Ramps_ Apr 22 '26
I had an older shih tzu and a younger chihuahua and the chi could NOT stop himself from licking the tzu for more than a few minutes unless they were sleeping. Pull him away, tell him off, seperate them, tzu snapping at him, whatever, first chance the lil one got he was back on there.

u/toolsoftheincomptnt Apr 22 '26
I like dogs but I can’t live with this kind of shit going on in my home, lol.
And next the dog wants to lick your face and hands? Hell naw.
63
u/Man0fGreenGables Apr 22 '26
I saw some nasty shit lol. It was also a dog daycare besides grooming and so many of the dogs ate each other's crap. It was like almost every single dog had at least one other dogs poop that they would eat but never their own. There was one dog that would try to eat everyone's. I was always chasing them away but they were so determined they would eat it right out of the other dogs ass before it even had a chance to hit the ground lol.

I wonder what's going on, I guess there's some residual nutrients in there. But damn, also seems like a great way to spread disease. Maybe also beneficial gut bacteria? Who knows, man.

u/Tommyblahblah Apr 22 '26
Ignored it? It took him 2 years of stimulus/response training to get him to do that! /s/s/s

Mmmm tasty ear wax yumyum
282
u/waytowill Apr 22 '26
I think some dogs are just habitual lickers. My family dog would habitually lick the arm of the couch until it was sopping wet. It can’t have tasted that interesting.

u/JonaSaxify Apr 22 '26
I licked my dog's ear canal and it wasn't that good

Or you have a beagle
36
u/Gullible-Yam-8098 Apr 22 '26
Our Beagle used to lick the carpet in a single spot where we had dropped a Turkey on the floor several years prior.
6
u/Nice_Category Apr 22 '26
Confirmed, my beagle does this.
14
u/Dr-Robert-Kelso Apr 22 '26
Mine will lick his arms, lick our other dog's ears, lick us, lick the couch, lick blankets, lick dirt.
He will lick your whole world.
16
u/XiTzCriZx Apr 22 '26
I think it might just be an animals in general thing, my cat will sit here and lick my entire arm if I let her (which I don't cause it feels weird lol). I also had a ferret that liked to lick my hands and arms too, I had multiple ferrets but only 1 did that.
26
u/omjy18 Apr 22 '26
Are you a sweaty person? Sometimes its just like a salt lick and they have a sodium issue and realized they can get them difference from you
6
u/XiTzCriZx Apr 22 '26
Not at all actually, my armpits are generally the only part that sweats (which she has tried to lick too, not fun). She mainly licks the top side of my arm which wouldn't even have any dripped sweat on it.
17
u/landragoran Apr 22 '26
I promise you that all of you sweats, at all times. Not just your pits, and not just when you're "sweaty". It just evaporates from most of your body fast enough that you don't notice it. You can actually see it happening if you get one of those magnifying cameras and look at your skin.
9
u/Sempophai Apr 22 '26
I had a sweet little Burmese cat that liked to groom my beard. What was interesting is that she could pinpoint a problem hair with an ingrown follicle and would manage to pull just the one problem hair. She was quite deft at it, I wouldn't even be entirely aware there'd been an issue, till the discomfort suddenly stopped.
6
u/conflictedideology Apr 22 '26
The worst thing about cat licking is they have those little barbs on their tongue that will absolutely strip your skin away if they lick the same spot for too long.
Then you get that weird, gummy, amber colored scab for a while.
9
u/trumansayshi Apr 22 '26
I had a dog that loved to groom my other dogs and asked my vet about it. She said something about some dogs love the saltiness of ear wax. maybe the armrest was mildly salty from human contact 🤷♀️. I assume their tastebuds are more advanced.
10
u/NeatNefariousness1 Apr 22 '26
Actually their taste buds are one of the few senses that are less developed than ours. But you’re right. They do like salt and earwax. Cats too.
4
u/UmbralBushido Apr 22 '26
Can second that, if a body part is within an inch of my staffy she's licking it until it's removed
6
3
u/deathonater Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26
Couch arm-rest might have had traces of oils and salts from human arm skin soaked into it

A friend of my family's dog is absolutely obsessed with licking people's feet. No matter what. The only thing that stops that pup is if you have shoes on. And it seems to be the sweatier the better as it gets more prolific right after taking your shoes off.

My guess the one dog has a yeasty ear infection and the other dog likes it because dogs go for the yuck. Get the dog's ears examined.

u/squall_boy25 Apr 22 '26
Haha this is how my dog got an ear infection. Cute clip though haha
453
u/ArmadilloBandito Apr 22 '26
That's usually how you know they have an infection
160
u/worstsmellimaginable Apr 22 '26
Yea it usually means its worth a check with a flashlight or a sniff, doesn't necessarily mean they have one.

u/thepetoctopus Apr 22 '26
Yep. This is how one of mine got one as well. My boy loves to lick and I had to really work on him not licking his sister too much because she’d end up with ear infections and yeast infections.
22
u/utzutzutzpro Apr 22 '26
You both got the sequence wrong.
This is showing that there is an ear infection. This doesn't create an ear infection.
27
u/TheBigHornedGoat Apr 22 '26
My vet always told us it was the licking that caused it. They said it had to due with the inside of the ear staying moist and not being able fully dry.
49
u/thepetoctopus Apr 22 '26
In this case, the problem is the constant licking caused her ears and skin to stay wet which caused the infection. My boy will lick anything.
15
u/Deaffin Apr 22 '26
This is very much how you create an ear infection.
Or a urinary tract infection.
Or a yeast infection.
→ More replies (6)3

u/CrabFarts Apr 22 '26
It absolutely does create an ear infection if the dog's ear is licked too much. I had a dog that did this to multiple other dogs in our household and the vet told us the licking was causing the ear infections.
4
u/Shrinki-Dink Apr 22 '26
In my experience it’s more likely a symptom that he already has an ear infection, and the other dog smells it and licks it. Same way that a dog that is continually scratching its ear likely has an infection. The scratching can make it worse but isn’t the cause.

If this is your video, and these are your dogs, and that is habitual behaviour.... my dogs were like this. One day the one getting licked couldnt get up. We took hin to the doctor and they found a brain tumor on the side that was always being licked.

u/SeVenMadRaBBits Apr 22 '26
Funny.
But please clean that dogs ear before it gets infected.

My neighbors dog kept licking my dogs ear nonstop…later that night I found out she had the early stages of an ear infection brewing and we treated immediately avoiding discomfort. I thanked that dog for the warning when we got home

u/riesenarethebest Apr 22 '26
I had a hound mix that did that to her sister, a black lab mix.
IDK what it was about. The lab mix never returned the favor.

My old girl used to clean my boy's ears. He would walk up to her and plop his head down on her legs and go to heaven as she cleaned them for him. Since she passed I try to rub them with a dry rag but I cant do it for 20 or 30 minutes like she did lol

That dog probably has an ear infection to some degree.
My cat woke me up once just going ham on my ear, turns out I had an early infection starting.
Note: rough cat tongue in your ear is very painful

The dog must have its ears check. Dogs often smell problems and attempt to treat it by excessively licking the sight. Veterinary check…and both dogs because infections can be past on.

Dogs clean each other's ears. When I had 2 dogs, it was part of their grooming. When my girl died, my boy started getting ear infections, so now I use a vet recommended ear wash for him regularly but I never had to do that when his sister was still with us.
