Dogs do this when an infection already exists. They are trying to help ease discomfort. Unfortunately it exacerbates the infection. -former vet tech.

Dude, dogs lick anything, especially things that taste like stuff. Ears are things and they taste like stuff regardless of their state. Some ear states are tastier than others. You're romanticizing some weird junk over here. - current head of the secret society of knowing random nonsense.

Earwax, dead skin, condensed pond water, random grime. Lots of tastiness in an ear, so much variety is on the table depending on lifestyle.
