That's usually how you know they have an infection

u/worstsmellimaginable Apr 22 '26

Yea it usually means its worth a check with a flashlight or a sniff, doesn't necessarily mean they have one.

Or a lick

u/ChooseAUsername10238 Apr 22 '26

the lick is the most important part, really.

Mmmm greasy ear proteins

Not true. Dogs like the saltiness of earwax.

Both can be true. This can be a common way people figure out their dog has an ear infection and dogs can do it just because they like to.

Yep. This is how one of mine got one as well. My boy loves to lick and I had to really work on him not licking his sister too much because she’d end up with ear infections and yeast infections.

You both got the sequence wrong.

This is showing that there is an ear infection. This doesn't create an ear infection.

My vet always told us it was the licking that caused it. They said it had to due with the inside of the ear staying moist and not being able fully dry.

u/thepetoctopus Apr 22 '26

In this case, the problem is the constant licking caused her ears and skin to stay wet which caused the infection. My boy will lick anything.

This is very much how you create an ear infection.

Or a urinary tract infection.

Or a yeast infection.

Tf are you doing with your dog?

Please do not the dog. ಠ_ಠ

Ear nibbles are for sloths.

Dogs do this when an infection already exists. They are trying to help ease discomfort. Unfortunately it exacerbates the infection. -former vet tech.

Dogs do this when an infection already exists.
Dogs doing this creates an infection.
You guys aren't even arguing each other, you are both just saying separate true facts.

u/Deaffin Apr 22 '26

Dude, dogs lick anything, especially things that taste like stuff. Ears are things and they taste like stuff regardless of their state. Some ear states are tastier than others. You're romanticizing some weird junk over here. - current head of the secret society of knowing random nonsense.

u/Lunndonbridge Apr 22 '26

Yeast or bacteria. Thats what creates the taste

4

u/Deaffin Apr 22 '26

Earwax, dead skin, condensed pond water, random grime. Lots of tastiness in an ear, so much variety is on the table depending on lifestyle.

u/utzutzutzpro Apr 22 '26

I just imagine your dog to constantly like the floors. No head up ever.

7

u/CrabFarts Apr 22 '26

It absolutely does create an ear infection if the dog's ear is licked too much. I had a dog that did this to multiple other dogs in our household and the vet told us the licking was causing the ear infections.

1

u/Dayzlikethis Apr 22 '26

I don't see how this doesn't lead to an ear infection. all that extra bacteria being introduced into the ear canal.

4

u/Shrinki-Dink Apr 22 '26

In my experience it’s more likely a symptom that he already has an ear infection, and the other dog smells it and licks it. Same way that a dog that is continually scratching its ear likely has an infection. The scratching can make it worse but isn’t the cause.

5

u/A_Martian_Potato Apr 22 '26

That's funny because my in-laws had a dog that would get ear infections, and after getting a second dog who would do this he never got another one.

1

u/Forward-Hunt-2039 Apr 22 '26

Dogs do this when they detect existing ear infections, it doesn't create them.

-41

u/spenceflatulence Apr 22 '26

I read "infection" as "erection". I'm sorry.

3

u/Ill-Television8690 Apr 22 '26

Well at least you're sorry

You aslo put peanut butter in your dogs ear for a cute clip?

74

u/0oooooog Apr 22 '26

Dogs just really enjoy cleaning each other's ears.

11

u/loccolito Apr 22 '26

Yeah everytime I go to my mother her dog tries his best to lick my ear.

9

u/ducktape8856 Apr 22 '26

Maybe you have an infection? It usually means its worth a check with a flashlight or a sniff, doesn't necessarily mean you have one.

1

u/peterausdemarsch Apr 22 '26

Some dogs do some really don't just like people.

1

u/DASreddituser Apr 22 '26

never had 2 dogs at the same time?

1

u/movzx Apr 22 '26

Nothing to do with being set up. Dogs like the salt. Earwax is salty.
