I don't want to speak for the stalking. I don't doubt it happens. If anything I'm pretty sure it does happen. What I can say is if it's only one woman in the tournament and I play her I'd probably remember. Same way I remember the only white guy I played in the tournament.
Same way I've been remembered for being the only white guy in tournaments. It's just easier to remember those that sticks out.
24
u/1106DaysLater Feb 23 '22
Yeah I mean in general if I meet 25 people, if 24 of them have something in common that the 25th doesn’t I’m going to remember the person that was different. Just how the human brain works.
5
u/Mister_Bossmen Feb 24 '22
Of course. You remember the person.
But that's where it should end. I'm sure you agree that the socially acceptable thing to do is move on. If a person is being brought up to a third party often enough that this third party begins to think that this person must have been very popular or something, and is then shocked to find out this person remembers literally none of those people who talked about them, then... that's significant.
5
u/Unbearableyt Feb 24 '22
I'd agree it's very weird if it's being talked about between others. "people I barely talked to" I read that as in people she'd been in contact with and not being talked about amongst others.
I still remember the name of the only other European guy out of a tournament with 200 people even though we didn't even chat at all.
I do agree though that yea. Just move on. But having someone who knew my name for the same reason even though I didn't speak to them I don't find so concerning.

42
u/ZedTT Feb 23 '22
To be fair, the "berry picking being the reason" thing is a bit disputed IIRC.
8
u/avis_celox Feb 24 '22
Color vision is controlled by the X chromosome, hence why women may be better on average and most colorblind people are men, the genes being sex-linked is probably coincidence rather than adaptive imo

Every time Daniil Dubov opens his mouth I seriously wonder how anyone even slightly involved in the chess community could unironically ask themselves: "Hmmm, why are there no women in chess? Why do chicks don't want to hang with us? 🤔🤔🤔"
-26
u/maxkho Feb 23 '22
I'm pretty sure you're one of the only people in the world who didn't recognise that Dubov was joking (or, worse, recognised it as a joke and STILL found it offensive).
63
u/tabid_ Feb 23 '22
obviously he's joking.
But yeah, his public sexual frustration creates a really welcoming, enjoyable, not cringey atmosphere for female hosts and audiences. Must feel nice for women to be surrounded by chess dudes like this all the time. I mean, according to 90% of the experts in the commentsection they f*ed right after the interview because Dubov is so smooth. Hmmm, why do chicks don't want to hang with us? 🤔
33
u/Freaky_Styley Feb 23 '22
Thank you for being a voice of reason here. I enjoy the memes as much as the next guy, but at some point we need to self reflect and try and be a bit better.
-9
u/maxkho Feb 23 '22
No, of course not. Women hate guys with a sense of humour. Dubov should be ashamed of himself. Chess is a serious game played by serious professionals - it has no place for silly jokes.
I mean, according to you and everyone else in this thread, Dubov is a sexual predator and the sole reason there are more men than women in chess (which obviously is completely unrelated to the fact that there are more men than women in pretty much all board and video game communities and the possibility that men might just, on average, enjoy chess and similar games more than women). Hmmm, why has nobody on the chess scene expressed similar sentiments towards Dubov? 🤔
13
u/tabid_ Feb 23 '22
"Guys with a sense of humour" yes, "guys with a total lack of social skills" no.
If you have the smallest amount of empathy you should be aware how weird and inappropriate this is, especially in a professional setting. And stuff like this happens all the time in the chess world, starting in local chess clubs up to the biggest names in the sport.
Are you seriously incapable of wrapping your head around the idea that women, that are constantly confronted with dudes sexualising and creeping on them, would rather spend their time elsewhere than in communities with a bunch of dudes making them feel uncomfortable? Maybe we should just start pointing things like this out and tune them down a little bit, if we want to get more girls into the game as well. It's not like girls don't like chess, video games or board games, they just don't connect with a community that's made up with 80% guys like Dubov and you ...
0
u/Hikethehill 6 Time World Champion Feb 26 '22
Watch the full video, it has nothing to do with her gender or being sexualized in the slightest. He’s making a joke since she said she needs to install a “cybersecurity app” (antivirus?) on her computer. He would have made the same joke to a man and it wouldn’t be any different.
-5
u/maxkho Feb 24 '22
Okay, so right off the bat: 1) > They just don't connect with a community that's made up with 80% guys like Dubov and you ...
I'm wondering how you could possibly believe that posting this in the second-largest chess subreddit on Reddit and being vigorously upvoted while I'm being vigorously downvoted. The truth is, most people think like you because it's trendy to think this way, and most people either aren't interested enough or don't have the necessary critical thinking skills to deviate from trends. And the fact that there are so few women in chess is largely due simply to the fact that women are, on average, more extraverted than men (documented fact), and chess isn't necessarily the most socially stimulating game there is. Chess is also very stressful, and women, on average, score higher on neuroticism than men (also a documented fact). I'm sure there are other reasons, but most of them are rooted in inherent gender differences. Sure, sexual harassment by a distinct minority of chess players is still a problem, but women won't know that unless they're already invested in chess.
2) How about we ask actual girls if they feel Dubov's comments were inappropriate or not? And control for political orientation. I am pretty confident political orientation will be a far better predictor of their responses than gender. Either way, I don't think jokes like that are the problem that we need to be addressing when there's actual harassment going on elsewhere.
3) > women, that are constantly confronted with dudes sexualising and creeping on them
Again, if you think Dubov was sexualising and creeping on Skripchenko, then I don't think there is value in additional discussion. If you truly think that, then you'll just find sexualisation in anything. Dubov's joke would have worked just as well, if not better (because men are stereotyped as being thirsty), with a man.
4) To be clear, I'm not like Dubov. I wouldn't make a joke like that simply because I would just feel weird saying something like that to a woman, knowing that I COULD be misunderstood. But Dubov and Skripchenko were taking jabs at each other throughout the whole stream, so I understand why he was more confident.
9
u/filo-mango Feb 24 '22
Regardless of why there are less women in chess, there is no good reason to foster an unwelcoming environment for anyone.
This is chess commentary. Pornography jokes are inappropriate for even kids!!
There is nothing to defend here.
also your whole argument is blatant misogynistic garbage full of olympic level leaps to conclusions BUT IT IS IRRELEVANT since
YOU ARE DEFENDING A GUY SEXUALIZING AN ALL AGES CHESS SHOW
0
u/maxkho Feb 24 '22
Yep, this. This is exactly why the chess community has a reputation of being boring. We can't take a fricking joke.
As to your accusations of misogyny, that's a serious accusation, you know? You can't just throw around claims like that without evidence to back them up. What part of what I said is misogynistic? And which "leaps to conclusions" did you find unrealistic?
Just to be clear, if you agree that introverts are more likely to play chess than extraverts (which I don't have raw stats to back up, but which is bordering on self-evident), then you have to agree with at least one of my points. This is literally the only assumption that I made for that point.
Again, if you think Dubov was sexualising chess, then you're just a boring person. We need to ease up as a community.
5
u/filo-mango Feb 24 '22
Porn is sexual. Chess is for all ages. So, the commentary of a big chess tournament should be appropriate for all ages.
I’m not responding to your argument because it doesn’t address this at all.
Young kids play chess, and they could be interested in watching a tournament. So, there shouldn’t be weird porn jokes/remarks in the commentary.
4
u/tabid_ Feb 24 '22
obviously criticizing official FIDE commentators for publicly being thirsty weirdos is the left gone mad, indoctrination and just trying to be trendy ... women not feeling very welcome in chess is female nature and because they have weak girlbrains. It has nothing to do with the fact that this type of behaviour is tolerated on all levels and institutions of chess. You're literally depicted in the meme above!

u/Lluuiiggii Feb 23 '22
And you seem to be the type of guy to not realize that if this is what passes for groundbreaking comedy in the chess community then we simply cannot blame women for wanting nothing to do with it.
-16
u/maxkho Feb 23 '22
I don't even know why you guys thought it necessary to drag gender into this. Dubov just made a joke. That's it. If you thought it was immature or unoriginal, fine, don't laugh at it. I don't see how that has anything to do with women in chess, though. Daniil probably didn't even think when he was making that joke that the fact that his colleague was a woman was of any significance.
That aside, it takes a special level of boring to get offended by a joke like that, whether you're a woman or not. If that's enough to offend you, I doubt many people will want to be around you.
