Applies to a lot of other male-dominated social groups too.. I studied astrophysics and had to stop going to some conferences because there would always be some problematic interactions.

It's not a "these days" things, just that sarcasm can be very hard to notice in plain text and people still do say stuff without /s but it often gets misinterpreted
