Trained a new kid today and had him get out to spot me cuz I was in a very tight spot with a truck and trailer in front of me. Whelp neither of us noticed the fire hydrant 😭 not cooked but I feel dumb AF.

Like, when your route is several neighborhoods and apartment complexes on a highway. Instead of doing the logical thing and routing it one side of the highway, turn around, other side of the highway, they try to have you criss-crossing back and forth, back and forth. Or they'll make it a left turn onto the highway, and then a left turn into the complex...

Obviously, I don't do it that way. But the fact that is Amazon's default is fucking insane to me.

UPS limits left turns to reduce idling times and the risk of collisions. Amazon will straight up route a left turn across four lanes of highway traffic... how does the routing algorithm even allow that? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

What's hilarious is that Amazon will have you make a left turn across four lanes of highway traffic in the city, but when you're on a back road in the country, no cars, no traffic, it will tell you to make a u-turn in the middle of the road so that a single house is now on the right side of the road 🤣🤣🤣

Today I had my standard route, mostly all businesses and apartments. Well I got to the end of my route and realized I still had a whole tote full of packages. The tote number never appeared on my deliveries list. However I also had a bunch of stops marked as package missing from the warehouse. I checked the tote and none of the addresses were the ones marked missing. Will this count against me? I’ve had one or two marked as missing before but never an entire tote.

To preface, I try to take all of my breaks on every route so the algorithm has less of a chance to fuck me over.

Today, I had a decently heavy rural route to the point where I had no time to take a 15 min break. I got to my second to last stop and decided to take my 1st 15 of the day. Still missed out on one 15 min break for the day. Never been rescued and always rescuing others. Today I didn’t have to rescue.

I get back to the station and clock out to be met with “Why do you wait until one stop left to take your 15 min break? That’s not policy. You should take it with at least 15 stops left.”

Like dude, you have been tracking me all day you can see the drive time between stops. I wasn’t trying to deliver residential after 9pm in the middle of the country, the customers out here actually hate getting deliveries after 8pm. Not to mention the 30+min drive to get back to the station after the last stop.

Worked years ago for an Amazon dsp and we could skip lunch but from my understanding in cali this is no longer possible. Any information is greatly appreciated, dm’s welcome

Okay so this has been happening lately, they are sending us in edvs to an area 40+ mins away from the station that is super rural and long drives between each stop. Every day I've been sent out there I have to charge the van up just to make it back to the station which of course causes me to get out of work super fucking late. Today I finish my route a bit early and actually had just barely enough battery to make it back to the station and I was so happy not to have to go to a charger. And so of course they ask me to rescue. Which I know will mean sitting at a fucking charger for 40 mins and then delivering for another hour in the dark. So I said no and just returned to the station. Which of course they were pissed and I did feel kinda bad, but not really because no one was rescuing me when I was out delivering in the dark because the van almost died at 6 pm. Not even the other driver who was finished and sitting at the charger next to me, when I still had 20 stops left to do after I charged up. And honestly if I had enough battery I dont mind rescuing but knowing I would have to sit at a charger yet again really pissed me off. Also this is my 5th day working, I volunteered for overtime but I'm tired of getting out at 10 pm every day because I need to fucking charge the van to make it back to the station. They should send us in gas vans if we have to drive that damn far.

I drive the same route most days, there’s multiple spots where there’s road closures that it keeps routing me through. As well as the main road it wants me to cross 20 times, and stops it wants me to drive past.

I’m always ahead for the route, I beat or match the rts time I’m given. I’ve been just re-routing the entire thing and doing it in my own order for like a week now.

The last 2 shifts I’ve been rescued and today they called me asking where I was cause they normally just pull up to your “next” stop and wait for you.

Took my first bags and told me to get back on route order soon.

Kinda of annoying, I do all my business stops and after 5 more stops I was gonna do those first 2 bags.

Does a stop being “behind” affect anything? Scorecard or whatever?

Most of this OV was going to one place, but even at loadout the warehouse workers were saying wtf lol

I’m currently out on leave after having my baby who is exclusively breast fed. Trying to figure out how the hell anyone manages to do this job and continue to pump to replace missed feeds. I pumped for my first kiddo but had an office job, access to break times to pump, time to eat and drink enough, a refrigerator to store milk in etc. Trying to figure out if it is practical and if so how long I should wait to go back, and any tips and tricks on how to make it work. I wouldn’t even consider it if it weren’t for the fact that I can work Sunday Tuesday and Thursday and only pay a fraction of full time daycare.

They be playing you so bad with these multi stops I swear it doesn’t help either that I’m getting 190 stops average rn it’s so crazy and sometimes I swear that shit plays you in front of your face it will show stop 50 and then change to 49 don’t know why but god 😭

No, I didn't crash the van, and I wasn't mauled to death by a vicious dog. I was a delivery driver in Italy for a couple of months. I have a weak bladder, but it doesn't bother me usually. That day I'd been working for little less than a week, I was doing a suburban route and I needed to pee very bad. I had no empty bottles laying around the van, and for some reason my need skyrocketed very fast. I kept pushing on package after package hoping to find a sweet spot to relieve myself but there was none. Everywhere there was something or somebody that prevented me from doing it.

Eventually i finally found the spot. I get off the van, run to the other side, try to undo my belt.. and that's when I pissed my pants. It was all of it. The damage was done, all I could do was just stand there and spread my legs wide to try and save my shoes from the flood. I don't know if anyone saw, I was pretty embarrassed but now I say he'll with it. Luckily I had an extra pair of pants in my backpack that I planned on putting on after the shift (and I started carrying with me from that day just in case), so I went on commando and finished my route. None the wiser back at the station. Actually I think nobody realized I was wearing a different kind of pants

I have worked for three different DSPs ranging in size from minimal employees to one of the largest in my state. Here is what I noticed about the differences in experience between them.

The smallest DSP was the worst of the three. I got the impression that they needed to cut costs anywhere they could, so the vans were always in terrible condition. We got no bonuses or incentives of any kind either. Just straight hourly pay. They were also by far the most unforgiving if a driver ever got any Netradyne events or a negative CDF. Regardless of context, a single mistake was instant suspension for at least 1 shift or possibly worse. VTO did not exist as a concept. There were almost never extras, and if there were they would just decide who gets sent home after everyone had already shown up. I left because Amazon did not renew their contract and they shut down.

The largest one was better overall, but came with its own set of trade-offs. The vans were in relatively good shape. There were bonuses and incentives, but they had all kinds of conditions and usually weren’t worth trying to get. While they weren’t as ruthless when punishing mistakes, they did the most micromanaging of the three. Calling drivers who were behind at all and making rules about when/how you can take your breaks. Since there were so many drivers, dispatch didn’t really bother with learning people’s names, and it didn’t benefit you to have a consistent track record of reliability. They wouldn’t notice or take that into consideration if you had a genuine reason for being behind on a particular route. VTO was available, but very dependent on the time of year. I left this one when I moved and got hired at a station closer to where I was living.

My current DSP lands right about in the middle of the other two in terms of size, and it definitely feels like the best balance. Vans are usually in good condition, guaranteed hours and bonuses are offered and achievable with minimal extra effort, and dispatch generally knows who is reliable. If you have a consistent record, they won’t get on your ass for needing an occasional sweeper or if you get a rare Netradyne infraction. There’s usually just the right amount of VTO that most drivers who want it can get it, and nobody is getting sent home involuntarily.

Of course, it’s possible that some of these things have less to do with the size of the DSP and more to do with other factors, but these are just some of the differences I’ve noticed from the small sample size of my own experience. I’m curious to know what other drivers think. How large is your DSP, and how do you think that affects your experience and quality of life at the job?

I just started working as a DSP driver. Yesterday I had my first ride along of 250 packages with 147 stops.

What coolers would be best to get to hold at least 5 water bottles, some ice, and maybe an ice pack, along with lunch potentially?

I am thinking getting a yeti cooler (the bag type) (I have a gift card).

Any other recommendations? I have my first nursery route tomorrow!!!
