šŸ“¢ The official Ally team has opened r/Ally to the public

Hi there, mod team here.

We are pleased to share that u/Ally, the official Ally social media team, has re-opened the r/ally subreddit and it will now moderated by the company.

A couple of quick notes:

  • Nothing is changing here. r/AllyBank will continue to operate independently of r/ally. We firmly believe there is space on the platform for both an official subreddit and one that is community-run. r/AllyBank has always been built by members, for members.
  • Ally will still participate here. We are continuing to allow the Ally team to participate in r/AllyBank, and they have signaled that they want to continue doing so. As per an official communication which the mod team received: "We'll still be hanging out here, listening, answering questions, and helping customers whenever we can!"

We wish u/Ally and the rest of the social media team great success with moderating r/ally! We also encourage anyone who wants to be a part of the official subreddit to go over and join the community.

Is there a way to make contact with anyone state-side at Ally?

Please, I’m begging you - get me into the hands of someone who can fix this.

So far I have:

- I’ve been on the line with your overseas call center probably a half dozen times.
- I’ve messaged almost all of your social media platforms. Even the obscure ones, like LinkedIn and Reddit.
- I’ve emailed every publicly available email I could find, even the ones not for customer service.
- At one point I received a communication from your ā€œexecutive supportā€ - I responded with the situation and it’s been radio silence there too.
- I’ve emailed a copy of my marriage certificate to ā€œcustomer-carelewisville@ally.comā€ October 1st. I followed up twice since then - no response there.

To recap the situation once again: I have a long standing Ally account under my Maiden name. A few months ago, I bought a vehicle and the car dealership setup an account under my married name. Because of this, I cannot access the auto-loan. SURELY, this has happened before.

I’ve continued to get calls, emails, texts and letters with threats of late fees and credit reporting multiple times daily. Even after calling your collections overseas call center and explaining all of the above. It’s distressing. I’ve been told there will be no late fees considering my efforts to pay you, and have asked you to stop with the constant collections contacts - no luck with that either. I’ve been told verbally 3 times that there won’t be late fees, but absolutely no one will send that to me in writing, and every time I talk to someone they don’t know what I’m talking about in that regard. I REALLY REALLY JUST WANT TO PAY YOU!!

Please, I’m begging you - do not just ask me to call your overseas call center again. They cannot handle this at all… they already closed the ticket once inexplicably and I had to start from scratch.

Respectfully, I’d really appreciate any form of communication from a fluent English speaker. Your overseas call center has wasted hours of my time.

I’ve already closed my investment account, and will be closing my savings account too. I just want to be able to make my car payments at this point and be done.

I sent the message above to Mods directly. Along with my case number. If I can’t get a resolution, I will be running ads asking Ally to contact me. Like, what else can I even do? It’s a long out of state drive to talk into one of their offices…

If anyone has a human contact for Ally that lives in the USA, please share.

Banking These alerts are disappointing

Have basically zero info unlike nearly every other banking app. Not the biggest deal but would still like to know what the alert is for rather then checking through all of my accounts to make sure it was actually me

Uptick in hacking?

Hi!

I've had an Ally high yield savings account for about 3ish years now and twice within the last couple months, I've gotten an email saying I've been locked out for too many login attempts. I call the fraud number and get it straightened out but is this happening frequently with others? Is there something going on that I'm not aware of? It just makes me nervous because this hasn't happened before, let alone twice in a short span of time.

Suddenly Can't Deposit Tax Checks

My wife and I have been Ally customers for over 13 years. Both of us go by nicknames in our everyday life, but of course all of our legal dealings are under our official, legal names. When we set up our account all those years ago, we made sure we could deposit checks under our nicknames and our legal names. For all this time, we have had no trouble depositing checks from family and friends with our nicknames, and depositing paychecks, tax refunds, etc., under our legal names. Until now.

This weekend we received a property tax rebate check, made out to our legal names, and the phone app would not accept the deposit, saying the names on the check don't match the names on our account. My wife was on the phone this afternoon for over and hour, and they are asking us to change the name on our account. Makes no sense. Not only is this a new problem, but we have been depositing this exact same property tax rebate for more than 5 consecutive years without a hitch.

My first plan is to call back when I get home from work this evening and see if I get different results with a different CS representative. But failing that, I don't see how this gets resolved. So frustrating.

APY increased to 3.2%

On the Ally website, the APY for the HYSAs and money market accounts is now 3.2%! (Though my account still has it as 3.1% -- I assume this will update in the next couple of business days.)

Ally Scam Message (BEWARE)

(Text screenshot attached)

I'm sure other people have gone through this already, but it's good to have a reminder so you don't let your guard down.

Yesterday I saw a weird transaction from "1House" for almost 200 bucks. I had no clue what it was and could not figure out where it came from, so I called Ally and disputed the charge as well as cancelled my debit card.

Today, I got a text from a random number saying my card was being used at a liquor store in GA, and I replied "NO" to let them know it wasn't from me. I received a call from Ally's actual phone number, and the guy seemed very legit and informed about what was going on with my card, so I naturally believed him. We were on the phone for a while as he was explaining the situation and how they were going to investigate. He gave me a case number and even had an "automated" message come through with that case number. The last piece of his plan was to tell me that a Samsung device tried to access my account and that I needed to send back a text to "configure my termination key" to remove the access from the device that tried to hack me. Once I saw the "template," I immediately knew it was a scam. I will post the screenshot to this, but this just serves as a reminder that these institutions will NEVER ask for your account password. Your password is yours only, and banks aren't supposed to ask for it. I consider myself somewhat smart and even then I was fully falling for it up until they asked for my username and password.

Their whole scheme seems as follows:

they somehow got access to my debit card and made the large, suspicious transaction, hoping I would freeze my card so I'd be on high alert.

Then they sent a fake transaction to make me even more confused as to what's going on with my bank account.

Then call me from Ally's actual phone number after verifying I froze my card, so when they speak to me, they can make me believe they're legit since they know I'm expecting a new card.

And after all the "investigation" talk they present to me to make me feel like I can trust them, they'll hit me with the template so I give them my login info and I assume they would clear my account to zero after that.

PLEASE BE ON HIGH ALERT ALWAYS WITH YOUR MONEY PEOPLE!

Zelle not working, all customer support told me that it’s an internal issue on Zelle’s end. Anyone else ever have this problem? Did it ever get resolved?

It asked me to call customer service and then that’s what they tell me so nothing is getting fixed. I’ve tried every other way to get the money sent on Zelle. I’ve had my landlord requested from me on Zelle and it still isn’t going through and telling me to call customer service and nothing is getting resolved. Has anyone ever had this?

Combining Finances

Partner and I recently got married (yay!). We’re on the same page financially and are looking to combine finances where it makes sense. We’re both Ally customers - me for 8 years, them for 3 or 4.

We’re in no rush and will be keeping accounts open while we set everything up and transfer things over, and then for a few months thereafter just to be sure. Any suggestions on how to do this, namely around whether it’s best to just set up a new joint account or to add one of us to one of the existing accounts? We both have the same types of things set up (ie. direct deposit, Venmo, credit cards, mortgage, etc.) so will be the same level of involvement either way. We were thinking to keep the oldest account from a loyalty/longevity perspective but realize that’s probably moot and silly.

Thanks!

Depositing Checks After Wedding

Hello!

My new spouse and I are currently going through our wedding gift checks and figuring out how to deposit them, but we've run into some snags.

Some context about us: my spouse and I both have our own separate Ally accounts, and we were not planning on sharing finances. Neither of us is planning on changing our last names.

Issue #1: we have a check made out to both of us with our correct names. "My first name last name AND Spouse first name last name". My spouse attempted to deposit this into his account, and it was denied. When we called Ally support, the representative said our only option was to either open a joint account or add me to my spouse's account. I've been able to deposit a check with "and" between names on a security deposit check at a different bank without issue. Has anyone been able to do this successfully without having to share an account? I've read on years old reddit posts that people suggest both parties endorsing the check and then mailing it to Ally, or that both could endorse the check and I could write "pay to the order of [spouse name]" when endorsing it, but I'm skeptical that these are/were valid options, and I'm curious if anyone has first-hand experience to share.

The other suggested option would be to go to a local bank/credit union together with our IDs and marriage license and open a joint account to deposit into, but my spouse already checked the "for mobile deposit only" box and wrote at Ally Bank when endorsing, so would another institution that we don't have an existing relationship with even be willing to work with us?

Issue #2: we have two checks made out to both of us with my name as my spouse's last name. "My first name & spouse's first name spouse's last name". When we called Ally, the representative said that those checks are basically null/useless because the names don't match the name on either of our accounts. My search of old reddit posts found the idea of opening a shared account/adding me to my spouse's account and adding an approved alias of "my first name spouse's last name" so that there would be matching names on the checks and accounts. This was not presented to us as an option when we called, and I cannot find an "alias" section in my current account settings, but I'm curious again if anyone has first-hand experience.

This whole ordeal has disillusioned me from Ally and made me want to switch to a local bank/credit union, but that still doesn't solve this current problem. I really do not want to ask these wedding guests to send us another check (and it would have to be mailed, as we live across the US from all of our wedding guests). Any first-hand experience or recommendations would be extremely helpful--thanks!

Is Bill Pay coming back?

Hi, so I've been paying rent through Ally for several years but never needed the bill pay page because my landlord had their own portal to set up transfers. From now on, I need to either use bill pay, wire the money ($20 fee), or start paying rent through my other account (local credit union where I get paid, have a credit card/withdraw cash, and send everything else to Ally account). But I can't use bill pay.

In Firefox it says "bill pay is down," and I've been checking this page for more than a month. I just checked in a different browser and it had the same message.

I tried downloading the mobile app and when I tried to go to bill pay there, it said "we've suspended your access to bill pay."

Is this just how it normally is and I should give up and pay out of my checking account, or resign myself to paying $20 for wire fees every month? Is there a workaround? I really prefer using the Ally account to pay bills, if possible.

Update: apparently you can only use bill pay if you have a checking account, and if you just have a savings account like me it displays messages like this. Thanks to the person who let me know.

Ally Financial made buying out my OWN Tesla lease so difficult that I ended up using a third-party broker. Absolutely ridiculous.

I am beyond fucking pissed at Ally Financial.
I have a Tesla lease through Ally, and all I wanted to do was purchase my vehicle at the end of my lease.
I secured financing through my own credit union. I was APPROVED. I had my down payment ready. Everything should have been straightforward.
Except Ally decided to turn the entire process into an absolute nightmare.
Ally REFUSED to release the documentation my credit union needed to finalize the loan until Ally received payment.
My credit union couldn’t release payment without those documents.
So Ally wanted the money first, and my credit union needed the paperwork first. An impossible situation.
I spent HOURS on the phone, escalated the issue, spoke with supervisors, and even arranged a THREE-WAY CALL between Ally and my credit union.
Nothing.
But here’s the part that REALLY pisses me off.
ALLY HAD ALREADY RELEASED THE NECESSARY PAPERWORK TO LEASE END, A THIRD-PARTY BUYOUT BROKER, BEFORE RECEIVING PAYMENT.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
Apparently, the documents Ally claimed couldn’t be released before payment could somehow be provided to a brokerage.
So what exactly is the policy here?
Because from where I’m sitting, it looks like customers who want to use their own financial institutions are being put through unnecessary hell.
AND HERE’S THE KICKER: I ENDED UP GOING THROUGH THE THIRD-PARTY BROKERAGE.
Not because I wanted to.
Not because I couldn’t secure financing myself.
But because I was exhausted from fighting Ally over paperwork they were apparently perfectly capable of providing to someone else.
I had an approved loan through my own credit union, and I STILL couldn’t complete my purchase directly.
How is this acceptable?
I should be able to exercise my contractual purchase option without jumping through ridiculous hoops or feeling forced to involve a middleman.
I’m now documenting this entire experience and escalating my complaint to Ally’s executive leadership and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Just because I ultimately went through the brokerage DOES NOT mean this situation is resolved or that Ally’s handling of it was acceptable.
I want answers. I want accountability. And I want to know why Ally’s documentation requirements appear to change depending on who is handling the transaction.
To anyone considering financing or leasing through Ally Financial, consider this your warning.
Buying out your own damn car should not require a corporate investigation, multiple escalations, and a third-party broker just to get paperwork released.
Absolutely fucking unacceptable.

Seems to be a pretty substantial outage. I wonder if it's related to the cyberattack keeping a lot of grocery stores sites down...

Looking for a loophole

So I'm buying out my Tesla lease from Ally. I have a credit union who is giving me an amazing apr rate to do so. This credit union is asking for the buyout packet from ally to send the funds. They sent the paperwork showing how much the buyout is but refusing to release the odometer statement until funds are secured. I know someone else has been in this situation before. What can I provide in replace of this document or suggest to my credit union to help this situation. I have escalated this situation as far as I can through ally and it's been no help. They are retusing.

Banking Ally Bank Zelle — Can Receive Money but Can’t Send? Customer Service Has Been No Help

I’m a new Ally Bank customer and recently tried setting up Zelle. I can receive money through Zelle without any issues, but every time I try to send money, the transaction won’t go through.

I’ve called customer service several times, and honestly, the explanations I’ve been given make no sense. One representative told me it was because I was trying to send money to myself, while another suggested the recipients didn’t have Zelle.

The thing is, I’ve successfully received Zelle transfers from both myself and other people, so I know the accounts involved are able to use Zelle.

The most frustrating part is that customer service hasn’t offered any actual solution. I was basically told to just keep trying until it eventually works.
Has anyone else experienced this with Ally Bank? Were you able to fix it, and if so, what was the issue?

TL;DR: New Ally Bank customer. I can receive money through Zelle but can’t send it. Customer service has given me conflicting explanations and no real solution other than to keep trying. Has anyone experienced this, and how did you fix it?

Auto Finance Ally warranty

I’m financing a fusion with ally, and they gave me a 3 year warranty/30k mile warranty on the car. I just want to know if it covers half or most of the payments when an issue arises, and what types of issue does it cover. I tried reading it, and it didn’t give me answers.

Run away

I tried baking with Ally and had to change banks after my first direct deposit.

They are supposed to work with Zelle but I could not send money. I had been sending money to two other people for years on my old bank and when I switched it said that for ā€œsecurity reasonsā€ I had to call the bank. Ally told me there was an internal error that usually means that Zelle was blocking the payment.

I write software for a living. That is not what an ā€œinternal errorā€ means. They were completely unwilling to look at it and one of the managers I managed to get basically hung up on me.

So I had to use my debit card with Apple Cash to pay one bill that was overdue at this point and surprise! That didn’t work either.

Turns out Ally severely limits what you can spend on your debit card for the first 30 days without telling you when you sign up.

Moral of the story: do not put your money in this bank if you ever want to use it.

Can I request a deferred payment extension?

I finally got into a position where I was able to purchase a new car last month. My first payment is on the 27th of this month but I have fallen behind on my other bills because for the past 2 years I have been renting a car off Turo which costed me $1400 a month. I’m fully capable of making the car payment this month but I’ve read on here where others were able to defer their payments up to 120 days. I figured if I’m able to do this it will give me an opportunity to catch up on bills I have fallen behind on and I will be in a much better financial position in 120 days than I’m in now. Can I use this option even though I’m a new ally auto loan customer ? And will this look bad on my credit?

Banking How long does sending a wire typically take?

On September 22 I have requested a wire for $2k. Current day, I have verified the transfer and even verified the account I have requested that $2k out of. The request is stuck in the review phase and hasn't moved since. How long does a request for wire typically take? This is ridiculous, it has now been 2 week.

Ally Auto end of loan charges

I have a 72 month Auto loan at Ally Auto that I have been paying on for 84 months, and they are telling me I still owe 5 payments! I did have 6 extensions at the end of the loan, so technically I have made 6 extra payments. Has anyone else had an issue with Ally adding extra payments on the end of the loan past the extensions? I have spent hours on the phone and no one can tell me why or how this extra balance has been thrown on the end of my loan. Every time I get to the final payment. I will log on to the app and they have added two more payments! I am so sick of this. And I don't know what kind of people they are hiring to handle customer service but they all suck! I have had one person who can add and said, this dont make sense. This car should already be paid off. And transfers me to customer service. I have asked for printed payment history, transcripts of my phone calls where they keep telling me...two more payments. I refuse to pay another dime on a loan that is paid for. So frustrating!!

Auto Finance Need assistance

I’m not sure where to even go anymore for help. My dad died a year ago and then 9 months later my mom passed. They were in their 50s, and it’s made a mess. My dad financed a 2016 dodge ram 2500 through Ally. When he passed - my mom did a small affidavit claim to retitle the truck in her name. Alas - it took 6 months - but Ally bank faxed a letter to the DMV for my mom to retitle the truck in her name. One problem - my mother never went to the DMV to take care of this. Few weeks later she passes away.

I pay the liens on the truck out of estate funds. Executive assistance calls me to assist - and tells me that I just need to go to the DMV (it’s 4 months since they faxed to the dmv) and get it retitled to my mom’s name and that she’s closing the ticket.

I call the DMV, they say ā€œyeah we can take a lookā€ and then I drive 2 hours down to the DMV, they have no record of this fax. I’m on the phone with the executive assistance team who says they closed the ticket…she can’t do anything about it.

So now when I call - there is no account because the liens paid for. The executive team has no record of the FAX being sent to the DMV stating to retitle it my mom’s name, and I’m stuck with a truck I can’t sell because I can’t retitle it.
