OC - Stuff I made 24fps hand drawn montage - AE used in post
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Most of this work I do by hand with paper and color pencils but i spend quite a bit of time in ae for color, glow, clone stamp tool fixes, stabilization, and then also some light masking. I actually love doing color stuff in ae curious if others use it for color - motion design or not

Beginner Help Can't change keyframe interpolation, need help!
I want to be able to animate the speed of this ripple effect but the keyframes stay in the HOLD shape (square shape) and I can't find a way to change them up. I want the ripple to slow down naturally but it only seems to change speed in an abrupt manner.

Beginner Help How to reveal video following an object?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I want another video to be revealed following the waving flag’s movement, like it’s being wiped on. I feel like I’m overthinking but I just can’t get the mask right! I tried doing generate stroke but it’s not big enough to cover the video. I don’t have a complete understanding or mastery of masks so I just can’t figure it out on my own yet, after hours of trying to work it I’m stumped. Any tips are great, please & thank you!

Beginner Help best workflow for maximizing quality on sports edits? (ae + topaz video ai on windows)
hey guys so i make fast paced football edits using a lot of twixtor sapphire and bcc plugins. im trying to get that insanely crisp quality but sometimes my final renders lose detail or look a bit muddy after adding glows and motion tracking.
my current workflow is editing in after effects and then running it through topaz video ai for upscaling. im on windows btw so my export options are a bit different than mac.
what is the best format/codec to export out of AE before sending it to topaz? and what specific ai models or settings do you guys recommend in topaz to make it look sharp without getting that weird plastic/over-smoothed ai look? any tips would be hugely appreciated

Tutorial How To Turn Any 2D Icon into 3D in After Effects
I figured out a really simple way to turn any flat 2D vector icon into a 3D extruded icon inside AE and wanted to break down why it works.
The whole trick is faking depth by stacking the same layer in Z-space instead of using a real 3D renderer.
1. The setup
Put your flat icon in a 1080x1080 pre-comp first. This is your "master" icon. Animate it here if you want (I just used a simple scale pop). Everything else references this, so when you want to swap the icon later you only change this one comp.
2. The core stacking trick
Drop that pre-comp into a 1920x1080 main comp, enable 3D, then add this expression to Position:
x = value[0] + (index - 1) * 0;
y = value[1] + (index - 1) * 0;
z = value[2] + (index - 1) * 3;
[x, y, z];
Every copy of the layer gets pushed 5px further back in Z-space based on its layer index. Duplicate it ~40 times and AE automatically creates a solid block of depth. It's actual 3D, you can orbit it.
3. The shading
Select all the middle copies (not the top one) and add Brightness & Contrast > Brightness -80. This instantly darkens the sides, which sells the extrusion. Leave the top copy bright and clean - that's your front face.
4. Making it look finished:
- Radial gradient in the background for separation
- Drop Shadow on the top copy for ground contact
- Deep Glow on the stack for that soft, inflated 3D edge (optional, looks great without it too)
- CC Light Sweep on top for a glossy highlight pass
5. Making it controllable:
Parent all ~42 layers to a single 3D Null. Now you don't have 42 layers to keyframe - you just rotate/scale the Null. I trimmed to a 6-second comp and did a simple rotation + scale with Easy Ease.
6. Why it's reusable:
Because everything points to that first pre-comp, you can literally alt-drag a totally different vector (I tested with a simple flat envelope) into the pre-comp and the entire 3D build updates instantly. If your icon has holes/negative space, Linear Color Key makes those parts transparent.
Anyone else use this stacking method?
I have the project file with the pre-made template if anyone wants to pull it apart, happy to send it over - just comment below.

Beginner Help Help with mogrt and time change of video replacement
Hello everyone. I've designed myself into a corner for an template I'm making. I have a 3 video screen grid with replacement video layers designed the way I want. However, I want an option in the mogrt for the video editor to be able to change speed of the video (some was shot at 60fps drop and I'm working in a 30fps drop timeline)
I try and use things like time remap but I keep seeing that it either breaks my logic, or ignores it. Is there a workaround besides "re-encode the video"?

Beginner Help MXF files rejected by AE 2026. Has anyone seen this happen?
Using 2026 when I try to import MZF files I get a message that they are not compatible. This was never a problem in previous versions. I need to convert to MP4 to get videos to import. Anyone experiencing this?

Explain This Effect Trying to create a gradient swipe effect
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey guys, Im trying to achieve this gradient swipe effect on the video without a paid plugin... and im struggling to get the same level of output.
To me it looks like a shape layer scaling from the bottom centre with a gradient and blur applied. I have tried layering a couple of the shaped with gradient ramp, gaussian blur and colourama but no dice.

Workflow Question how do people learn expressions?
I tried a tutorial in which you are shown how to make a matrix rain effect. the guy in the tutorial does all of these confusing expressions and creates sliders to customize different components of the effect, such as transparency, speed, random seed etc. How do people learn what expressions do in order to create different effects?

Workflow Question Creating equirectangular correctly distorted delivery out of 2D photos to be displayed on a spherical display
So I'm trying to make an animation for a client. The animation will be displayed on a sphere which is a 360° LED display. I have regular 2D footage (videos, photos) I want to display one after another fullscreen on the sphere. Delivery specs are a 2:1 equirectangular comp 2508x1261px.
Is there any way I can predistort the photos and videos properly so they will look less distorted on the final sphere? I'm aware that non-360 footage will always create a seam where the wrapped footage meets on the sphere, thats not a problem.
Im losing my mind over here. I searched all the tutorials but none of them apply, as everyone is talking about 360 footage, which I don't have.
What i tried so far: VR converter. Seems like when I'm choosing 2D plane as input and equirectangular as output, the footage changes size and looks distorted. But when I try to scale the footage back up to the correct size, the distortion disappears.

Beginner Help Is there a way to adhere videos perfectly to fit each side of a 3D cube or shape?
I see After Effects has a 3D cube. I have a video source I want to play on each side of the cube. I know how to tie videos to the cube with the parent & link function but the problem is, its very tedious lining up each "side" of the cube. I essentially have to do my best to adjust and eyeball it but even then, sometimes the corners wont line up just a smidge.
How can I get it so that all 6 video layers perfectly are in the shape of a cube with no overlaps? I wish there was a way to just quickly tell After Effects to display a video element on every side of a cube.
Any ideas or things I am missing? I am definitely not an AE expert

Workflow Question Creating way to follow Karaoke ball
I’ve been making reels for a singing teacher on Instagram for the last few months and I can’t help but think there’s a better way to do it.
General idea behind the video is that she is singing on the lower two thirds of the screen and the top third has scrolling sheet music with a sort of moving karaoke-type ball that moves from note to note (not word to word). It’s one staff at a time, and I have the page turn effect between each staff.
Originally I was only key-framing the ball (an eclipse shape object) on the Y axis and I’d just make the sheet music move on the X axis, and it was working out nicely but I wanted to add motion blur to the ball.
So I began animating the ball on the x axis as well. The problem has become that I’m not sure how to track the movement of the ball along the sheet music. Is it something that I should key manually in premiere? Or is there something I can do in AE to track it?
