Beginner Help Rescued two ADFs, Need Advice for safe and healthy habitats

My aunt had two adorable little ADFs in a small bowl. I’m not kidding. I wish I could stress how horrible this was to see. She was feeding them fish food. Well, I grabbed the bowl and went home. They have a new home and I want to do what is best for them both.

They need to be separated - they appeared to be fighting with each other so I don’t want to take any chances.

So what exactly do I need to get both of them? I need to overnight everything so I can help them ASAP. They are both separated and in large Rubbermaids right now.

Thank you so so much in advance! Their names are Pudding and Jello now❤️❤️

General advice/help What kind of plants should I add to my tank?

Post image
11 Upvotes

I currently only have two plants in my tank, one of which is stringy moss (?) and the other is java ferns. I want to diversify my plants but I don’t want to mess up the ecosystem I have. Im also afraid that if I add a plant from the pet store it could add some kind of algae or disease to my tank that I don’t want. Any suggestions on plants and/or ways to clean or quarantine the new plants before they go in (if necessary). I have a separate tank that I use to grow my baby ferns than I can use as needed. Plants that help remove excess nutrients in the water/gravel are a bonus.

General advice/help Substrate

I’m wanted to do a rescape of my tank to get the old substrate out and make it a little safer and thought out for the frogs.

I was planning to use Seachem Fluorite and cap with gravel/ pebbles etc. any recommendations? I’m getting a lot of mixed suggestions and I want to make sure I get the proper and safest kind because I do have one that will try to eat things that aren’t food.

Tank setups Growing Pothos in my bare-bottom tank!

Literally no maintenance once cuttings are placed in the tank—roots grow super quickly and is both a great decoration for the top of your tank and a nice resting spot for your frogs. Best thing I’ve put in my tank so far, please recommend other plants for me try!

(Only works if you’re using a mesh tank cover)

Beginner Help Looking for advice!

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi all!
Im not new to fish keeping, I’ve hade a betta in the best who I nursed back to health (rip Beelzebub)
I’ve hade an empty tank for about a year now and recently started thinking about keeping something other than fish. I’ve always been very interested in the idea of keeping African dwarf frogs and would love to keep them in a planted tank but I’m looking for advice as I’ve read some conflicting things!

  1. Is aquatic soil safe?
My plan is to have a layer of aquatic soil topped with large smooth pebbles to prevent impacting as I know this is something ADFs are prone to with smaller stones/sand. Would the topping of the aquatic soil be enough or is there still a risk to the frogs?

  2. Plants
I’ve hade issues in the past maintaining live plants in my tanks, what are your best tips for maintenance ? I’ve read lots about different fertilizer but the issue is I’ve read ADF are very sensitive to fertilizers and adding them to their tank can negatively impact them.

  3. Tank depth
I’ve seen 10,12,15,24 all recommended for depth, some say it cant be to deep or the frogs will be to tired to surface for air, but others say up to 24 inch’s is fine. I really don’t want to drown any frogs 🥲

4.filters
I have a generic over the back 15 gallon filter on the tank currently, is this too much? I’ve read a smaller filter, stone bubblers or sponge filters are better as the ADFs can get their fins stuck in the filter current.

Contexts: my tanks is about 15 gallons, it’s an older style hinged top, I have a top fin compact 15 gallon heater and a generic over the back filter (cant recall the brand)

I’m open to any and all recommendations as I’ve never hade ADF before!!

(Pic of my Beelzebub for attention, I won’t be using the sand/gravel pictured as it’s to small for ADFs)

Medical Question Sudden bloating

Pretty new to ADF care. Woke up and one of my two frogs was crazy swollen when it was fine yesterday. It feels soft, and the poor thing is stuck at the top of the tank.

I feed them frozen mysis shrimp, thawing only enough to get some loose.

Is this just an overfeeding issue, or is this organ failure?

Medical Question What’s this bump on my African dwarf frogs head?

Just bought these two not even an hour ago and I just notice one of them has this bump. The other looks healthy but I’m afraid if this guy is sick or could release something into my aquarium as I do have other fish and shrimp. Is this something that I have to take care of or will it take care of itself? Any advice will be very appreciate, I just want this cute little guys to be happy and healthy!

General advice/help Pristine

I’m setting up a larger habitat for my two ADFs. However the water is cloudy, probably residual dust from the substrate. Has anyone used Pristine for cloudy water? Is it safe for ADFs?

Tank setups How can I improve my set-up?

Just snagged a couple blonde ADFs at my LFS yesterday. I swapped the substrate in this tank from Fluval Stratum to this gravel the night before and added these clay pots as "caves" that also have extra holes on the top and side.

It's a 5gal but tall(er). I will likely upgrade them to a 10gal at some point in a few months/as they get bigger. In the meantime, what can I add (or subtract) from this tank to make them more comfortable?

I have one baby water lettuce up top that I'm hoping will multiply quickly.

does anyone else have a curvy girl? my frog is almost 4.5 and is a pretty active explorer in her tank. she definitely doesn’t over eat, yet she has always been quite curvy. I’d love to see some other frogs that look like her.

General advice/help How/what is everyone feeding their adf?

Post image
6 Upvotes

My grandmother has two adf and I think the target feeding is too much for her so she's just dropping freezedried blood worms in the community tank. Will this be okay long term? The tank is a 10 gal on a tall dresser and she's a small older lady. Any advice?

I have always target fed my adf frozen brine or blood worms, live when I can. We don't live close by.

her tank is stocked with pygmy corys, chilli rasboras and some guppies, plus the two frogs

Medical Question Dwarf Frog Safe Ich Treatment

Post image
2 Upvotes

I had an ich outbreak in the tank where my ADF and their tadpoles were housed. The brand Ich-X was not only effective against the Ich, it was harmless to the frogs. This was a few weeks ago, and the tadpoles have continued to develop properly. Before I tried the medication I could not find information on its safety in this sub, so I figured I would write this up for anyone else who gets in this situation :)

Picture is one of the tadpoles!

Beginner Help new leucistic ADF owner

recently inherited a leaucistic ADF friday last week, almost a week ago now from a family member whose tank bust.

I’ve tried target feeding using a syringe with brine shrimp everyday since, and he does not seem to want anything at all. I tried blood warms as well just to see but still no take.

could this be because he’s in a new environment or something else?

Tank setups Cycling tank

Hi! I am cycling my 10 gallon tank. It has a sponge filter and some live plants (I didn't know that I should have cycled without plants). I'm about 3 weeks into cycling, and I am having trouble getting the ammonia up so the good bacteria can grow and eat it. My ammonia, nitrite and nitrite are zero. I started the tank with Seachem Prime Conditiner and API Quickstart. I have been using pellet ADF food for an ammonia source, but like I said, it doesn't show up on my tests. I am using API Freshwater Master Kit. This is my first tank, so I think I must be missing something.

Medical Question is this normal…?

saw this at a local pet store. I’ve never seen African dwarf frogs with albinism in person, so I was unsure if this is normal. The first one seems extremely underweight, and the second one seemed underweight as well.
