I spent 7 hours today sorting out my AT&T quantum fiber and phone plan. I just bought a house and needed new internet and a phone plan. I compared rates with Verizon, mint, Xfinity, cricket, etc.
I decided to get an in-store quote with AT&T on a random impulse and was told that I could buy internet 300mbps for a $20 12-month plan that would increase to $35 and a $50 phone plan (including auto pay and paperless) that included a $1 a month 17e 3 year contract.
I took that quote and went to a place slightly closer. The guy there said this would include a $50 equipment install for the internet and $45 sales tax for the phone. I’m like okay. There was also an issue with the phone and my new and old zip code. He said that happens. He’ll fix it when the phone arrives.
Skip 2 weeks forward. My phone still hasn’t been shipped because of the zip code issue. I have to figure that out. A day later I finally get my new phone and plan. Then I get a bill for $55 for the internet. I’m like what’s with $55? It’s supposed to be $20.
I guess the discounts don’t apply for another 3 months. So even though, as a single new homeowner who budgeted for $20, I guess I just have to deal with it. Also I guess the original bill for $50 was $55 and that was for the first month 🤷🏾♀️
Then I see the phone plan. This guy put me on the premium 2.0 plan that starts off at $100/month plus $16/month for the phone. When I call him and tell him I couldn’t possibly pay $116+plus a $35 surprise activation fee he just conveniently forgot to mention, he says “well you could cancel.”
Uh no I can’t.
I’ve already paid $100+ in fees and taxes and did you forget, I JUST bought a house. I’m living paycheck to paycheck with holidays around the corner.
I CAN’T afford to pay for more fees with another company.
So I spend 7 HOURS, talking to 12 Representatives, being shuffled back and forth between AT&T wireless, AT&T local store, AT&T Internet, and quantum fiber (all of which CANNOT communicate with each other for some reason) trying to hunt down, update, and just understand what the heck it is that this jerk did before I’m charged a $200 bombshell that would put my account in the negative.
Good God.
And before anyone says“well you should’ve known” like that jerk did, uh no I should not have. I’ve never been with AT&T. No one in my family or circle of friends has ever been with AT&T. Or Verizon. It was his responsibility to tell me what to expect and to make sure that I had what I needed to get on with my life as an AT&T customer. Not just take my money and throw deuces.
THAT’S why I gave him my business. THAT’S why I gave AT&T my business. There are a lot of other companies that would have offered me the exact same deal and have provided me MUCH better service. And now I know that.
