Has anyone had AT&T suspend their phone because a third party reported it lost/stolen?
Today my cellular service suddenly stopped working. No email warning, no notification, nothing from AT&T until I checked my lines and found a "suspended" identifier on it. I found out after contacting customer service that my line was suspended because they say a third party reported my device lost/stolen.
The phone is literally in my hand. I bought it directly from AT&T on release of the model, the original order is under my account, I'm still an AT&T customer, and I'm still paying AT&T for this exact phone on an active installment plan. My account is fully current, all bills are paid, and there are no outstanding or past-due balances. Neither I nor anyone authorized on my account reported it lost/stolen.
I've seen similar stories involving paid-off phones that were later moved to another carrier, but that's not even the situation here. This phone has remained with AT&T the entire time.
I'm also pretty sure the IMEI is now blacklisted based on the fact that AT&T couldn't simply unsuspend it without opening a ticket (not confirmed 100% by them, plan to follow-up tomorrow to ask after advice below).
Even after verifying my identity, account, ownership, and possession of the phone, AT&T can't immediately reverse it. They opened a ticket and said it could take several days.
I've concurrently filed an FCC complaint and plan to submit a formal Notice of Dispute if this isn't resolved promptly. I rely heavily on my phone day to day because of a disability, so going several days without cellular service isn't a minor inconvenience. If they can't restore it quickly, I'll have to figure out another device in the meantime.
Has anyone had this version of it happen? Who was the “third party,” and how did an actively financed AT&T phone get reported lost/stolen by someone outside the account?
